OWH: Miles known for 'manic' enthusiasm

Here's another HuskerExtra article about Tim Miles: LINK

quote fr the article:

Miles, 45, was 71-88 in five seasons at Colorado State and led the Rams to a 20-12 record this season and at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament -- the school's first trip to the tournament since 2003. The Rams, with four Nebraska natives on their roster, lost to Murray State in the second round.
Miles went 16-47 in his first two seasons. His first team had seven of nine returning scholarship players either quit or transfer after Miles was hired. The Rams were 16-16 in 2009-10 and improved to 19-13 last season before this year's NCAA Tournament berth.
I hope people realize that we might get worse before we get better. I could see us winning a dozen games or so for the next two or three years. And having NU fans calling for the new guy's head. I'm just saying it might take Miles a few years to get NU basketball headed in the right direction. After all, we've pretty much sucked for about the last century.
I think if we see improvement every year people will be ok and understand a couple really bad years at the begining. He won't make us an NCAA team by next year. Either would any other coach for that matter, that is just unrealistic. I really liked his personality in the few videos I watched. I feal as though he may be that ambitious young coach that we have been waiting for. Here's to hoping :wasted
I hope you are right. But I am a bit skeptical. Look at this year. Doc's team was decimated by injuries, playing for the first time ever in perhaps the toughest conference in the nation. And yet we rode him out on a rail. Even though we've never really tasted success in basketball. Ever. Sometimes I think NU basketball fans are about like KU football fans.

Just for the record, I am probably the only person I know who didn't think we should fire Doc. I would rather have seen us hire a professional recruiter to bring in better talent. And keep Doc around for at least a couple of years. But that's just me.
I see what you're saying but six years was more than enough time to produce a winner.

Glad to see Moore got his scholly yanked...averaging 1.9 points and 0.5 rebounds, yikes...also looked into benny parker and shields...it appears that they will make a huge contribution right off the bat

Pretty harsh assessment on a kid that played in only 15 games and averaged a little over 7 minutes a game, ya think???

Doc could have played all the freshmen a TON more after not redshirting them.

Commish - I do not believe the criteria were announced until following the hiring of Tim Miles. That's why Scott Spineli was in the mix. If I'm right, it is unremarkable the "criteria" match Coach Miles. He may be a great hire in the long run (a long shot in my opinion) but the bottom line is we panicked and settled. Great candidates may not have been contacted. This hire was botched, and the developments of the last couple of days make that undeniable.

And these are???????

Danny Manning, Frank Martin, Larry Brown, Flip Saunders. We didn't take a shot at any of these guys despite rumors or confirmations that they are available. We acted too early.

Well, I for one, AM denying the hire was botched. (The timing of criteria is immaterial)

We have ZERO evidence of who, when, and/or why certain candidates were or were not contacted. What we DO have is speculation from fans, writers and assorted detritus that all claim some insider information.

Since I don't have any more evidence than anyone else, my take on it is no better or worse.

But we do have a preponderance of evidence of the type of man T.O. has exhibited and I chose (based on HIS accumulated credibility over multiple decades) to believe him. Since he was, you know, actually PART of it.

At the very least, the term "botched" would seem to be a little harsh, until we actually see how this plays out in a few years.

Until then, I guess we're just going to have to disagree.

Frank Martin is from Florida and always wanted to get back East. Why the hell would he take a step backwards and go to NU from KSU. The East Coast is his comfort zone.

The stability issues with Larry and Flip would not make them viable canidates. Either, Flip especially will be back in the NBA soon and jump ship in a heartbeat.

Manning, was a great player yes, but that alone wasn't gonna put butts in the seats. Feelers sent out early returned no interest. He has done good work with KU's big men recently, but this program needed a proven HC that has built a program, not sit in the Number 2 chair and sustain it.

I still can't get how so many people think that throwing out a ton of money would land any "big name" coach. These guys are not stupid and see that right now this job is a mess, and will be more of a challenge than most think. There were many coaches that said thank, but no thanks.

Paul - I appreciate your enthusiasm and your loyalty. But, it is time to call this coaching hire what it is: a long shot (one I hope hits). Frank Martin took a step back at South Carolina - I don't know why, but the speculation is he and the KSU did not get along. Regardless, South Carolina hasn't won an NCAA game since 1974. Your points about Danny Manning contradict. He wouldn't be a good fit or there wasn't interest on his part? I actually think he would have been a great fit and would have had interest. He's coached at a high major, coached NBA players, and has NBA connections. Coach Miles misses on all three.

As for the interest, Tulsa is not as good of a job as Nebraska. Any arguments to the contrary are makeweight to stem the erosion of enthusiasm before Coach Miles has a chance to coach (a noble, albiet futile, goal).

By the way, who cares if Larry Brown or Flip Saunders leaves? Why wouldn't we hire one of them and insist E. Strickland is on the bench to learn? Then, we have an actual chance to build the program, rather than replaying the same failed plan.

The bottom line is we need to stop making excuses for our program's failures; we will not fix our shortcomings until we acknowledge they exist.

The kids that Kentucky goes after are all possible 1 and doners. These aren't the kids we want, we want to build a solid program based on kids coming to Nebraska, having a great college experience and getting an education and graduating.

I actually disagree. I would take 5 one-and-done guys each year on our bball team in a heartbeat. Why? Because the elite bball players in the nation take that route and if there were ever a possibility of landing those types of guys, I would love to have them here.

So Crewe you don't think having Danny Manning as our coach wouldn't put butts in the seats? How many butts is the Miles hire going to get us? I'd rather take a shot on Manning who is sitting next to one of the best coaches in the country. What exactly is so impressive about miles? Rebuilding Div 2 schools is nice but not that impressive to me.

And having zero head coaching resumé is more impressive? By all accounts CSU and Tulsa are about equal programs, Nebraska comes in and hires a guy that has proven himself successful at the tier below Nebraska and you would prefer the unproven guy?

Of all the power(BCS) conferences I counted a total of 7 HCs were assistants before they got their current job. 6 of the 7 were promoted from within after their HC left for another job.

That means a total one one of Nebraska's relative peers went the route you would of preferred. Maybe it would of worked, but I am just saying hiring an assistant to a major college program is a rarity.

The vast vast majority are head coaches hired from lower programs.

Hey Husker fans, I'm not here to start a flame or anything. In fact I'm an NU fan considering all the beat downs you gave CU over the years and I love Lincoln. I just wanted to share a few things about Tim Miles. The guy can coach. You are getting a fun person who will produce if you give him time. The truth though is that he does not recruit well but he somehow gets 110 percent out of all his players every night. You guys obviously have a little bit higher standards so I hope you have patience because you will probably lose at first.

My only complaint is this: He will jump from you guys as soon as he turns your program around (which I firmly believe he will do). A few of you are hoping he will be at Nebraska for decades but he won't. So enjoy the awesome ride you have in front of you but don't fall in love with him because the grass is always greener with this guy no matter what he says and how he acts.

Good luck next year and go Rams!

Yeah, I would take Manning over Miles in a heartbeat. Roy Williams didn't have any experience when he got the job at Kansas. It's not like taking a chance on Manning would have destroyed the program. It can't go much lower.
