  2. I think we can all stand to step back and calm down. Riley's tenure is likely coming to an end, and there's no reason to denigrate him on the way out.

  6. Diaco's version of the 3-4 makes me want to gouge my eyes out. How do you sell recruits on a scheme like this? Do kids really grow up dreaming of playing a prevent defense their entire college career?

  7. I agree with Nobody. I get that Nebraska hasn't been elite in a while, but some of you are acting like the Nebraska job is Wake Forest or Vanderbilt. Is Nebraska one of the 10 best jobs in college football? No. Is it a top 30 job? Absolutely, and maybe top 20. Nebraska doesn't have great in-state talent or weather. Do you know what it does have though? F$#%ing everything else. Money? Check. Facilities? Yeah. Tradition? You bet. Fans that show up, spend money and care about the program? Affirmative. Play in a major conference? Pretty sure. Play in the more winnable division of the conference? Obviously. A willingness to give coaches what they need to succeed? Yeah. Remember that most schools don't have all of those things, or even most of them. Nebraska just needs to hire a better coach. And if you think Nebraska can't get a good coach then you're just crazy. Minnesota got P.J. Fleck from Western Michigan after he was undefeated for most of the year. Sound familiar? Minnesota isn't a better job than Nebraska. Purdue hired Jeff Brohm from Western Kentucky after consecutive 10 plus win seasons. Purdue definitely isn't a better job than Nebraska. Syracuse got Dino Babers from Bowling Green. All hot-shot young coaches that left for a bigger school. All schools that are worse jobs than Nebraska. Bottom line: The thought that Frost is going to stay in UCF for a long time, or that Nebraska can't get Frost is stupid. Will Nebraska get Frost? Maybe, maybe not. But let's not act like UCF is a great job or that Frost is actually going to be a lifer there. As long as Nebraska is in the Big 10 and UCF is in the AAC, the Nebraska job is better.

  11. If by "Scott Frost's teams" you mean Oregon and University of Central Florida, nobody on Earth has compared their style of football to Nebraska Football. Have you actually "seen" them play? I actually love that style of offense, and will take the winning every day of the week, but Frost calls the kind of gameplan that loyal fans of vintage Osborne football consider far too multiple and clever to pull off around here. If you have chosen only one former player to represent Nebraska football, and will follow him to any other school, you're not a Nebraska Football fan.

  12. You can't be serious with the bolded. Pelini had 1 game of HC experience and zero offensive experience. Frost has been a successful OC, DC and now HC. Plus, the list of legendary coaches that he's played for or coached with is way more impressive than Pelini's pedigree.

  13. So someone not being very good at their job equals toxic and being despicable? I personally would equate what happened under Art Briles as despicable & toxic or what happened under Joe Paterno as despicable & toxic. A man representing a University with class while barely winning more games than he losses doesn’t make that guy despicable & toxic. It just makes him a bad Head Coach.

  17. Ozigbo, like a few other players many people knew should get PT, only got PT because of injuries. I was then barked at because "the coaches know more than you" argument. Also how we will never sub someone in if the starter is playing like complete dog turds. This coaching staff is laughable

  18. The way Riley and his staff have managed the roster the past 3 years is one of my biggest criticisms I have for them. They manage the roster like it's an Oregon State roster.

  19. I've grown somewhat numb to many of his totally unacceptable comments or tweets. But, this one has me pissed off and I just can't get it out of my mind. Here is a guy, who dodged the draft, proclaimed that he didn't respect a war hero that went through one hell of a lot more than this pathetic human could ever imagine for this country....because he got caught, has driven division between groups in America proclaiming that some people need to stand and respect our country and our military.....then, the piece of s#!t goes and actually claims HE is the only President (specifically naming Obama) that has called families of people killed in action. Why?? There is no other reason than for political reasons. Listening to his statements, there is absolutely no reason for him to make that statement other than political reasons. So....HE is trying to make political gain off of dead soldiers. I have friends who still proclaim that Obama was WAY more divisive than Trump. That just absolutely blows my mind. Were there things that happened under Obama that created division in the US along racial lines? Yes. But.....this crap is being done on purpose, for only one purpose....and that is to drive division between Americans. And...people think Mike Riley is disgusting and toxic because he doesn't win enough football games.

  20. Man, we’ve really gone from “build a support staff like Alabama” to “Billy Devaney has a useless role” just to make Riley a total devil, eh.

  21. The difference is that Nebraska wasn't "broken" when Riley was brought it. The talk out of the AD was that he was brought in to tweak things, and that we had the talent to win. Then 2015 happened, and "toxic" became a buzzword, and the rebuilding talk started. Maybe the kids just didn't buy in because what they were being taught sucked? I can't say that anything in the program has really improved other than appearances. Recruiting isn't substantially better (interest means nothing if you don't land them), and our players don't seem to be getting better, or are just flat out not playing well (Hello Lamar Jackson). Now, whoever takes over is getting a soft team with a daunting 2018 schedule, so they're getting a mulligan out of the gate, which should help things.

  24. Oh yeah, there will be a lot of disapointment if we bring in Frost. Mostly amongst the hardcore Riley fans when Frost proves beyond a shadow of a doubt how horrible of a coach Riley is.

  25. True. My definition of Nebraska football is Nebraska Football players playing football. Your definition is Scott Frost at UCF winning games by a large point margin with a style of football that doesn't even remotely resemble old school Nebraska Football.

  27. This game made no sense to me. Playing for the present? Building for the future? Even trying to win? I don't know. People wouldn't like it, but I could at least understand if they felt they couldn't win so they used the game to develop youth or implement new ideas. Didn't do that, though. People wouldn't like it, but I could at least understand if they felt they couldn't win so they tried to limit the damage by playing passive and killing clock. Didn't do that, though. There was certainly no gameplan for how to win. Other than the continued slight increase in screens and other quick passes we've seen recently, we did nothing new offensively. This was a pure case of trying to run the same stuff, no matter how ineffective it has been, and no matter who the opponent was. The offense got some chunk plays in the passing game to make stats look good, but sadly that was in garbage time.....which was the entire second half. But defensively, I don't know. I haven't watched the game again, which I normally would have done by now, but even live it was hard to tell what the hell the point was most of the time. Just a wasted game all around, and even in defeat you should get something out of a game.

  28. Anyone who is ready to accept that Nebraska could never be a championship level program again needs to gtfo and go cheer for Alabama or someone else. Nebraska has everything they need to win and now they have an administration that wants to win more than the fans. They get it. They understand that football is the key to EVERYTHING and that includes academics. Perlman did not think that way. Everything I hear about this AD search shows me HB and RG want it bad and are willing to do anything to get it. I wouldnt be surprised if the AD they hire shoots for the stars and doesnt even interview SF. But if they want SF he will be the next coach.

  29. Something to consider are the details of Nebraska football since 2003. Around 2003 is when we started to see a descend in our program. Tom Osborne had ran his option offense for over 20 years. When he retired (1998), Solich continued the same offense through 2003. The reason Solich was fired was because everyone could see the recruit quality decreasing with each signing class he was there. In 2002 he finished with a 7-7 record. Something unheard of at Nebraska at that point in time. It was believed He was having trouble winning because recruiting the same quality of players that had come to play for Osborne failed. And it just wasn't the same perception and honor to come play for Solich. When Solich was coach from 98-03' he went 9-4, 12-1, 10-2, 11-2, 7-7, 10-3. The 7-7 season was proof of the recruiting classes dropping down in talent as fans we're starting to see some talent defenciences. The following year he did better but was canned by AD Peterson and Pelini (DC) took over for the bowl game (they won). Everyone at that time was asking for Pelini to be hired as the next HC, but Pearlman had brought in Peterson and Peterson had already been working on hiring his friend Bill Callahan. When Callahan came, he took the team 180 degrees. We had players who fit an option/run offense and a physical attacking defense. Callahan wanted finese/pocket passing/West Coast Pro set players. So he recruited to that. He recruited well to that because prior to Nebraska he had operated an offense that sat atop of the NFL. The Raiders had just played the Buccaneers in the Super Bowl and had showcased a great offense (they got beat badly due to sucky defense). People knew who Callahan was and Cali players wanted to play in an NFL offense for an NFL coach. But the transition from Option offense -> WC Pro sets was a complete 180 and required a totally different type of recruit. That, coupled with Callahan's lax coaching style, lack of discipline with players, and embarrassing defense, resulted in team cliques, popular players putting down young players, etc. Our championship, team, brotherhood culture quickly faded, but our recruiting sure did improve. (Callahan was brought in to be the anthesis of Solich. To take Nebraska into the future of football. We were told the option days were over, football was evolving). Callahan goes 5-6, 8-4, 9-5, 5-7... the defense struggles immensely. But Callahan pulls in a top 5 class and several other great recruiting classes, he just fails to develop the talent. AD Peterson is canned, Osborne is brought back to save the program and restore the black shirt defense. So Osborne hires the guy everyone wanted in place of Solich, the guy who just won a National Championship at LSU with one of the best defenses in college football. Bo Pelini gets hired to fix the defense. He keeps Shawn Watson to run the already productive Offense and we go on. Year 1 the defense improves immensely... guys already on the team who had been poor performers begin to emerge as NFL prospects...Suh, Amukamara, Hagg, O'Hanlon, Crick, etc. In a short amount of time we rise back to B12 champion contenders and play stride for stride with Texas. But the offense stalls out and by year 2, can't perform, can't even get first downs. Watson gets canned and Tim Beck is brought up to move from a Pro Style/Spread to a Spread. The offense becomes productive again and Nebraska begins to move from a Pocket Passer QB to recruiting dual threat QB's. We get Cody Green, Taylor Martinez, Tommy Armstrong. Pelini does well, wins at least 9 games each year he is there. But Osborne retires, Pearlman hires Eickhorst and we begin to see Pelini's firey field personality seep deep into his administrative life. Pelini's disrespect for Eickhorst and disapproval of his job at Nebraska coupled with the media's painted image of Pelini leads to a diminished, more unorganized focus on recruiting and a lashing out at fans and administration. As the recruiting suffers and Pelini's outbursts grow, Eickhorst chooses to let a coach with a .750 win percentage over 7 years go and he hires a person to be strong in the areas Pelini was weak. He wants a nice guy, who will restore media relations, fan credibility, and who will unite the team. He doesn't go after a proven winner. Mike Riley, a .500 coach with a personality that can win anyone's heart with kindness... is hired. And here we are today.... again, looking for someone to be strong in the areas a coach is weak. There's a few reasons I wanted to tell this story. I know most of you already know it. So it wasn't for education sake. It is to (a) bring attention to the systemic philosophy swing every 4-5 years since Solich's departure, and (b) to bring attention to the truth that Nebraska always looks for the next hire to be strong where the prior hire was weak, often neglecting to also find the strong characteristics the prior coach held that fans would like to see continue. This leaves us with a see saw effect of yo-yo from one valued charastic to the next. I've included examples below: (a) systematic philosophy Osborne -> Solich - Option offense/physical attacking defense continued with Solich in philosophy. Solich -> Callahan - moves to West Coast Pro set NFL offense/Off the ball assess and then attack cosgrove defense philosophy Callahan -> Pelini - moves to WC Pro Set which transitions to Dual Threat Spread/physical attacking defense Pelini -> Riley - moved back to Pro Set NFL offense/off the ball assess and attack Banker defense which transitions to a 3-4 disco assess and react defense *you see an offensive philosophy swing from one skill set of recruit (long lean/pro passer/220lbRB) and philosophy of offensive scheme to the opposite on offense (smaller jet sweep/slot WR/DT QB with run option/ smaller shifted RB) with each coaching change. And a similar situation with each defensive coaching change. (B) Strength/Weakness yo-yo From Osborne -> Solich - keep tradition, consistency, culture going. Solich fails to recruit well. From Solich -> Callahan - Callahan is brought in to fix recruiting and bring Nebraska into future of football because the option is "fading in college football". Callahan is brought in to be the opposite of Solich. From Callahan -> Pelini - Pelini is brought in to restore winning culture, tradition, physicality and defense. He is brought in to bring Nebraska back to what it was and to be the opposite of Callahan. Callahan was weak in defense...Pelini was strong. From Pelini -> Riley - Riley was brought in to restore public perception of Nebraska and improve Media/Fan relations. Pelini had been weak in brand relations and university perception. *with each hire, a weakness in the previous staff had been identified and the next hire is sought to be strong in these particular weak areas of previous HC, often neglecting to seek qualities to be able to continue what the previous staff did do well and establish continuity in the kind of player needed for the system.

  30. Apparently on Saturday after Drew Brown had to make a tackle on a kickoff he sprinted back to the sideline and started yelling at his teammates. He was mad cause the team did not care, they did not try and fight off their blocks and the kicker had to play DB when he didn't have to. Kudos to him for being a vocal leader, but man we need guys to not quit in games period.

  34. Yes, it is that easy. Hey Tyjon, we feel youre not ready yet and we dont really have a plan to get you the ball, so were going to redshirt you. Hes the coach, he makes the final decision, not the kid. And if not then use him. Bubble screens, jet sweeps, etc. Get him in space. Coaching is about putting your players in position to succeed. Having him run a fly route against a CB that is 3+ inches taller is not good coaching/play calling. Jamire Calvin seems to be doing just fine at WSU. Sorry to go off on tangent, this will be the last post about TL. Just want to see JM be utilized correctly if he comes here and I don't trust this staff to do it.

  37. I don't really get it. If you don't care to watch the Huskers, just their physical style of play and old Huskers who won championships, why don't you just hop on the Wisconsin band wagon? They have everything you want. It looks like Husker football, you have a Husker pulling the strings at AD (the coach in Camp Randall doesn't matter) Heck they even wear red and white. I know I know it's not scarlet and cream, but you don't seem to care much about that. You just want the team that wins with toughness right?

  38. Except a style of play does not Nebraska football make. There is tradituon and pride that can only be felt when you see the big red N. If you're so concerned with style of play then you should watch Wisconsin or Stanford. That looks more like old school Husker Football than what Frost is doing.

  42. Well, I'm expecting defections ... never wanted them however. I do think that if we get the right coach that some can be salvaged. Keeping certain position coaches can help as well. In any event, the MR experience is over and just like all failures ... there will be casualties all the way around and that's all normal. Just hope we get it correct this time so we don't have to continue the addiction cycle.
