  6. Re: Regulation. This one goes back to the Bush administration, but it's indicative of the mindset and the problem. The Clinton administration had just passed a new regulation on air conditioner efficiency standards, raising the minimum energy efficiency for what is generally the cheapest machine. The cheapest machines are typically purchased in bulk by builders and developers for use in multiple units, not surprisingly on the lower end of the housing spectrum. Immediately on taking office, the Bush administration starts rolling back every Clinton era regulation they can. Air Conditioner efficiency standards, too, because hey....pro-business! Oddly enough, the air conditioner industry wasn't really fighting this one. The #2 air conditioner manufacturer in the U.S. came out publicly to support the regulation as a necessary step for the industry. But the White House prevailed because regulation = bad, especially any last-second Bill Clinton regulation. That summer a heat wave hit Chicago, thousands of cheap, inefficient air-conditioners broke the grid, and hundreds of mostly poor people died. It was a situation the regulation was specifically designed to address. Deregulation did nothing to advance the industry it was supposedly protecting. It was petty and partisan and hurt people who never heard about either the regulation or deregulation because we rarely do.

  8. One thing that is worse than calling someone a racist is being a racist. You don't seem to take that very seriously, though. At least not when it comes to Donald Trump and his racist supporters (note: I am not calling all Trump supporters racists. I am referring to the supporters that are racists, which there are a lot of)

  12. True, we have had bad Presidents before. However, in my lifetime (which is on the longer end of the average poster here), we have never had a President who tries so hard to tear down our system of Democracy and plant seeds of doubt amongst his followers in the validity of our government through lies and deception.

  13. The fact that Trump always projects his feelings onto his enemies will be of great fascination to historians when they go through his tweets from this period and see how they actually reflect what's going on in his mind. Here, a kind person has translated the tweet already.

  14. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/false-executive-orders/ "First of all, the number of executive orders issued by President Obama is grossly exaggerated here. Through his first term (i.e., the first four years of his presidency), Barack Obama issued 147 executive orders, not 923. (Barack Obama signed a total of 275 executive orders during his two terms, averaging 35 a year; the lowest number signed since Grover Cleveland.)" FWIW....trump has issued 86 EOs so far in less than 2 years. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_executive_actions_by_Donald_Trump the biggest user of EOs? Franklin D. Roosevelt - 3,522

  16. OK, so we have the Trump threads with all of his shenanigans, and we have the Angry Violent Right thread talking about all the conflict in the country, and those are news and we should discuss them. But maybe we need a thread where we share stuff about this country coming together. Because I don't believe that we're truly that divided. I think we have far more in common, and far more good in us, than the headlines would let us believe. So here's a good start. Beto O'Rourke just lost a tough Senate campaign to Ted Cruz. They met at the airport yesterday.

  17. Another reason I won't judge him yet and I keep stating it over and over. It's quite possible Chinander will become a much better defensive coordinator. He hasn't even had half a team of his guys yet and he's been a coordinator for all of 2.8 seasons now. Also, the turnovers don't seem to be a random thing. Nebraska has gotten better and better at it throughout the season, and some of the fumbles were really good plays by the defender. IIRC we've had at least 3 fumbles in the past few games that were tackle, punch the ball out, and recover it. They weren't just unlucky fumbles by the opposing offense. One of our guys made a great play on each of them. I also don't think Lamar Jackson makes that interception in the end zone in the first half of the season. And the same thing happened at UCF. Turnovers are also a much bigger momentum swing than a 3 and out. They can demoralize a team.

  18. To add, outside of Mo, we are really lacking at LB. We don't have a true starting NT for a 3-4. No average + edge rusher etc.....A great O and sh!tty D don't have to go hand in hand......We can have an explosive up tempo O and a shut down D. Watching the games, many times our D has made mistakes in the execution of said scheme. ie missed tackle, over pursues, bite on fakes etc....The bright side is no denying we have improved as the season has progressed. We are recruiting talent and looking at the Juco route for contributors....Not to say I'm sold on Chin, but it's year one.......I like what Frost has done so far.

  19. Good lord people they dont even have the personnel to run their defense yet. They are recruiting their first full class right now. They have been starting two converted safeties at olb in a 3-4 Defense. They're not choosing to be bad at defense they just dont have the personnel. If they get the talent and body types they need to run a 3-4 its not like chin is going to instruct the defense to keep giving up points. I'm pretty sure if they consistently force turn overs and make tfls then the points and yards will go down as well. Its year 1 with below average talent learning a new defense just because there's an red N on the helmet doesn't mean they are automatically going to be good.

  21. Need players. I know this is a message board, but it’s really that simple. Need more explosive and fast athletes across the board. Defensive depth is also why special teams have been a struggle.

  22. I did my doctoral work at Florida State. I would never wish living in Tallahassee upon anyone. They don't call it "Talla-nasty" for nothing. Here's a quick pro's and con's list. Pro: 1. I could go for a run in shorts and a t-shirt any time of the year. It hit freezing a few times (everyone lost their s#!t by the way). 2. Campus had some interesting historical figures recognizing the Seminole tribe that gave the land to the state for the university 3. Southern Live Oak trees with Spanish moss. Driving down a narrow road with that as a canopy was really awesome 4. Wildlife was great. Very different for a Nebraska boy. 5. Great fishing 6. ...not sure what to put here Cons: 1. Humidity near 100% all year round 2. Year-round mosquitoes. Multiple species of mosquitoes that have their own peak breeding season throughout the year. 3. Humidity + mosquitoes in the summer. It was too damn hot that you wanted to sit outside but you had to move around outside or you were eaten alive by droves of mosquitoes. 4. The food was terrible. I have lived many places in the US, and it is easy to say that sans four restaurants (Osaka's, Decent Pizza, Aladdin's, and Whataburger), the food was crap. I remember driving through Missouri back to Nebraska and ate at a Burger King. I realized then that the crap they pass as beef in restaurants in Tallahassee was so terrible words can't describe. And, I am telling you I thought that burger was from heaven (a burger from BK). 5. No wind. The tall cypress and pine trees cut the coastal winds so the humid air just sat on you stagnant. 6. No palm trees...except at the airport (planted to trick tourists that they are in Florida not southern Georgia) 7. 3 hours+ to white sand beaches. Yes, you are 30 minutes from the coast in Tallahassee if you want to stand in the mud. Three hours to Jacksonville, Pensacola, or St. George's 8. When I first moved there, I was told "in Florida the further north you go the further south you are". The panhandle area is southern Georgia not the white sand beaches of Miami-Dade. And, you have a lot of thinly veiled racism. It's depressing to be around. 9. 3 bars a block apart for college students and they are disgusting. No other nightlife (well house parties and the like) 10. Small city, crappy traffic. Tallahassee is way smaller than Lincoln, but as the state capital with two major universities (FSU and FAMU) all downtown with only three main roads out of the downtown area to take you North, East, or Southwest, traffic sucked. I lived in DC, so no it was not that bad. But for a small city, traffic is way worse than it should be. City planning fail. 11. No zoos or interesting attractions. Really boring honestly. 12. Gun crime is really bad around the campus area. 13. You were living with c$%kroaches. Every place had them. No getting around it.

  28. A little quirk of mine is that I absolutely love watching people do something that they are really good at. And....it doesn't need to be something spectacular. I once sat in my booth at a trade show in amazement at the salesman next to me and his ability to sell to the public and garner people's attention. It truly was impressive. You have an absolute amazing ability to completely forget anything good that happened in the economy prior to January 2017. It really is an impressive trait of yours.

  29. My thoughts from last night: James Palmer is a bit streaky but that dude is such a competitor that when he sees the Husker start to slip he takes over. An amazing leader. Guys seem to be understanding their roles. We have legit scoring threats all over and so when one guy struggles it is fun to see others step up. Glynn was on fire early and want to see him stay consistent through a game. I was wrong on Nana. The dude had that big 3 and while he didnt play huge minutes, I think he is a legit option off the bench. He is athletic.. Kind of reminds me of Ray Gallegos a bit. Heiman is going to be special. It will take him a few years but he reminds me of a more athletic Brandon Ubel. He wont be that strong but I think he understands positioning and seems to want to go get a rebound. The refs were bad last night but I am super impressed with Miles and this team for not letting things unravel. When it went 44-42, I was worried but we had a big 3 and it seemed to fire them up. The crowd did a great job after the long break to check the clock to come back with a ton of noise. I think they turned that into a lot of energy. I am as excited for this team as I have ever been. Our bench is VERY light especially when Roby and Borchardt get into foul trouble but if we can work on that, I dont think it should be an issue.

  31. Correct. When he could have been a two-year thorn in their side and actually stood against corruption, obstruction of justice, etc. A timeline of Jeff Flake's integrity... Donald Trump wins the Election. What does spineless Jeff Flake do? He votes with Donald Trump 84% of the time. Did he leverage judicial nominations for legislation? No. He toed the party line... until he was 7 weeks from irrelevance. Excuse me if I don't applaud this charade.

  34. The spineless Jeff Flake trying to act like a hero now. Votes for Gorsuch to take Garland's seat. Votes for tax cuts for rich. Votes for Kavanaugh. Does nothing to impose Checks & Balances on Executive. Now, with 7 weeks before he is replaced and they don't even need his vote, he's finally using his leverage.

  36. It's not Trump that will be the undoing of American Democracy. He's a symptom of a much larger problem as I see it and American Democracy won't survive it unless we make it 100% a priority to elect people pledged to end it, hell it already feels a little sarcastic to call it a Democracy. The reason he gets away with unimaginable policies and lying and just in general being a lazy idiot is simple. Money, not his money, but the money being pumped into the parties and PACs by wealthy extremists and special interests. Trump helped whip people on the right into a frenzy, but that was happening before plenty by their actors spewing propaganda on their networks, but its PAC money and RNC money that tells these politicians (that are sans backbone until they decide not to run again) "hey, you better fall in line or we'll find and fund your primary opponents that will." That's the root of the problems on pretty much any level policy, from partisanship, to nobody able to stand up to their leadership. It's turned being an elected representative into a hostage to their leadership or they get the "how are you going to keep your glorified telemarketing job when we'll bury you in attack ads next cycle if you don't snap to."
