  1. You're like the +2 to my -2 on this. I think I generally agree with you that all lives matter. That we should NOT abort fetuses, especially as a convenience. But I'm a dude, as you are. And no matter what, it'll never truly be my decision to keep or abort a fetus. Where I think we differ (slightly) is that you more side with the fetus (baby) and I more side with the woman. But just barely. It's a close thing. If that's a baby, it's murder. If it's just a collection of cells, it's the woman's right to choose what happens to/in her body. Neither science nor religion tells us exactly what it is. And that's why it can't be a sole decision-maker. I will NEVER use abortion as a litmus test for voting ever again. It's a wedge issue, and the major political parties in this country use it as a tool to separate us. All things considered, abortion is just a tragedy. It's never an easy decision for like 99% of the people who go through it.

  2. AOC will run for president one day and win. Its because she fights for people like you every day. She fights for your children to make sure they have a habitable planet. She fought for my brother the other day when she ripped a drug CEO to shreds for the price of insulin. If you don't like people like her, that's on you. If you don't know much about her, then you should find out. This was yesterday. But it happens everyday with her.

  4. I just want to thank you all for being engaged and talking about this. Obviously you know I'm a gal, and this is a topic I feel strongly about. This last week or two has been disheartening and disgusting. It's lifted my spirit somewhat to see a mature discussion by (mostly) men - we need you all to be as upset about this as we are. You can see the level of respect or lack of that women are getting with this topic - with you speaking out with us we are more likely to make change. You all have mothers, and sisters, and wives and daughters and regardless of what they might decide to do if put into a situation where terminating a pregnancy was on the table, you should not want a bunch of men sitting in a room in AL or DC or wherever to limit the options they have. They know nothing about a woman's situation, health, health of the baby - anything. So I thank you - and I ask you to please, please continue to be engaged. It doesn't have to be a pro life or pro choice debate - this has gotten down to the right for a woman and her healthcare provider to be able to make the right decision for her and potentially an unborn child, with information that only they know.

  5. I'm pro life but there are a bunch of other things that I think should happen before Roe vs. Wade is ever overturned so we can lower the # of new moms there would be before they can't get an abortion. And I know these things won't happen, so therefore I'm against it getting overturned. Things that should happen first: Free birth control and less restrictions to getting it. I shouldn't have to go have my vagina poked and prodded every few years in order to go on the pill. Maybe I can be convinced that I'm wrong about the need but to me it seems unnecessary and it sucks. Better and more sex education - it's mind boggling that the GOP is so scared of it. It works. Improve help for kids in poverty, because that's what most of these kids are going to be. The GOP is also against this. Also, abortion should always be available when it's rape, the woman's life is in danger, and probably if there's a horrible health defect in the baby. And I know the government demographics are what they are but it's really annoying that so few women are involved in these decisions.

  7. We need to stop arguing over when life starts because it's silly. Science doesn't teach that life begins at conception because both the sperm and the egg were living cells before conception. There's no "life begins" in the process. As @Landlord pointed the real discussion should be about when "personhood begins". And even after the point that the fetus is a person, there's still the argument of the rights of the woman vs the rights of the fetus.

  8. Fine, then you shouldn't have a problem with the Trump investigation.

  9. Just to be clear here. These "dbags" as @Notre Dame Joe calls them, announced a month prior to the election that they were investigating Hillary and that won the election for Trump. I really wish someone would explain to me how/why, someone plotting against Trump, does something that helps him get elected?

  10. Honest question here... Why do so many people get so hellbent over the manner in which bad people get busted for doing bad things? I totally get how important due process is to our law enforcement system, but the whole “illegal FISA warrant” spiel is getting really old. Dozens of criminals have been indicted, prosecuted, put in jail, etc. because of Mueller's investigation. The country is now a safer place because of it. That should make everyone (regardless of political affiliation) happy, right? Imagine if Adam Lanza had been pulled over for speeding due to a faulty radar gun on his way to shoot up up Sandy Hook Elementary, and was then arrested because the officer saw a gun in his back seat. The country would now be a safer place because of it. That should make everyone (regardless of political affiliation) happy, right?

  16. The lesson remains that Trump won and Bernie Sanders came far closer than anyone imagined because they both ran as populists in a race where the prognosticators were wrong about virtually everything. Americans wanted change. Hillary Clinton was the exact opposite of that, but she had the more powerful machine, and between the fear of Trump and a genuine desire to elect the first female President, she mustered up a coalition of people willing to overlook a lot. What some would call "corporatist leanings" others might call entrenched entitlement. They're not that different. Hillary Clinton tried to pose as a midwestern every woman and champion of the common folk, but she came up as a corporate lawyer and ran with the Davos crowd as much as possible. She was always about political calculation, and seemed to think she deserved the Presidency. People saw through that. So however you found her unlikable, "corporatist" isn't the wrong word here.

I mean Im of the opinion that throwing someone who had a miscarriage in jail for 30 years and throwing 30 million people off health insurance is a little different than a livable wage, decriminalization of marijuana, saving the planet, universal healthcare, and affordable college but I guess thats just me.

  26. Also of note, it has Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan all firmly in the tourney. Five teams in the NCAA Baseball Tournament is good for a conference that supposedly sucks at baseball. Maybe we can be the team that goes to Omaha and changes people's minds about that. Or maybe we can find a way to lose to Dallas Baptist and Harvard. Who knows which team will show?

  31. Nobody is arguing that that is when life begins. The conversation is when personhood begins. Life isn't a good litmus test because we destroy life all the time in ways that are not destructive or bad or worth concern. Any time you scrub your skin you've technically destroyed a little bit of living tissue. Any time you eat....pretty much anything, some amount of life has been destroyed. Not sure exactly what type of consistency you're looking for. Bald Eagles are endangered, thus they need special protection. If you murder a pregnant woman you've ended the potential for life from the pregnancy without her consent; if she gets an abortion, that's a consensual decision. I do see it as a bit tricky and a hairy conversation and I don't necessarily have any answers, but consistency isn't the same thing as equity and I'm not sure how consistency plays out.

  37. @TGHusker Nebfanatic beat me to my own thoughts. The Declaration of Independence also endows us all with the right to liberty and the pursuit of happiness as well. Upon which we would be infringing for women if we declare the right to life to supersede the other two.
