colorado has a legit offense and we held them scoreless in the 1st half. without some flukey turnovers by martinez, we win this game easily. heck, if our kicker doesn't get hurt (which almost never happens) we probably win this game. i definitely think we're missing some pieces to be a great team, but i still think we're a bowl team this year with a bright future.

I think its sad that some people think that if you debate issues about your team you are "whiny", a "troll" or you're "not a fan"... I guess the way I look at it is if a person doesn't care about the outcome or the way the team plays, then why the heck do they watch or even care..??

I'm not sure many of them are fans at all or that they were on the ship to begin with. All I've seen for the last day around here is a bunch of whiny a$$ petulant children that don't have 5% of the commitment that is required to even play on the team.....and a whole lotta newbie trolls. Lost a lot of respect for some longtime posters as well. Grown men who seem to think 18-21 yo kids owe them something. Sad.

Martinez started the game going 9 for 9. Frost didn't appear to fear the passing game in the first half when Martinez was hot and Martinez didn't really run much either which was my only gripe at the time. The D played really well in the first half too. Frost lost his nerve at the end of the first half and I'm not sure why. He hung the D out to dry which is bad, but moreso considering the altitude. Frost lost a little of my respect in the post game when he didn't point his thumb. How do you defeat a delayed blitz? You leave a back in the backfield to pick it up. I don't remember seeing that. I remember seeing Farniok double teaming d-lineman to his left while the blitzer ran past him on his right hand side a lot. Frost didn't give us a chance to win in overtime. The guy who started 9/9 isn't good enough to throw the ball in OT? Did he get injured? We still lack talent, no doubt. But Frost lacked nerve and that's disappointing.

I have faith that Scott Frost will right this ship. I was at the game yesterday, and it was heartbreaking, frustrating, and a let down. But we must all remember that we have a head coach who cares about this program. I have faith Frost is trying to rebuild this thing the right way. Callahan despised the Osborne legacy, Pelini was not mentally stable to handle the pressure, Riley did not care. I don't even need to get started with the Eichorst. I know we have a coach who bleeds for this program. Frost inherited a team that was not held accountable. It was embarrassing seeing the physical difference between the Huskers and teams like Michigan and Iowa. I believe the hype is part of why we all feel so bad and have lost perspective on where this program was the last few years. It is clear Martinez in not comfortable and the run game is an issue. This team is young, there is a lot of growing that needs to occur, from the players to the head coach, but I have faith that Scott Frost has the programs best interest at heart and will find a way to turn this around. Next week this team will respond in a big way. I expect to see a lot more zone read and designed runs for Martinez. Go Big Red NU 48 NIU 17

We lost it sucks, but remember how much we all wanted the season to start. Theres still plenty of good football to be had. We can still have fun this season, Frost is the man he will get it turned around. Lets try to keep our heads up husker nation.

So here's the thing: Chinander has succeeded in building a front seven designed to stop the run. We have big, strong linemen & linebackers. We are built to stop Wisconsin, Iowa, & Minnesota. If our run blocking improves by the time we play those games we will be contenders to win the West. If we had somehow won in overtime, would you feel like we were a better team than you do now? Probably shouldn't. Our defense got gassed in the thin air mainly because our offense started to sputter (partly due to bad play calling in the third quarter). This team has a good foundation to build on, and I still think our defense is greatly improved.

I admire your ability to drink the kool-aid, but this team won't be winning anything of substance this year. This team has both personnel and systemic issues that won't be solved overnight, or in a week, or in-season. This is going to take longer than any of us hoped.

Ya, I've got some ideas what you can do with that finger. FYI- #13 Utah was favored by 22 over NIU and then only beat them by 18, 35-17 at home. I can understand (to some degree) being disillusioned with a game result. But whining that were only favored by so much in an opening line is pretty f#ckin ridiculous. Tells me you just wanna piss and moan.

Just revisit 2018 Northwestern. Husker offense came out and scored 14 out the gates before cooling off and allowing Northwestern to make it a game. Huskers held the lead through the 4th quarter but have the ball to NW up 31-24, only needing to keep them out of the end zone. Unfortunately, the Wildcats scored with :12 left to the it 31-31 and force OT. In OT, Nebraska did nothing with the ball, Martinez had a costly mistake (INT). NW got it, kicked the GW FG, 34-31. Sound familiar?

Hoping to write out my (our?) Emotions. After settling down, what is the reality of what we witnessed today? After the first half, we had the gane put away. Colorado was down and out, all we had to do was come out and put one more score on the board and it was essentially over. After watching the beginning of the 3rd, i was worried. Where is the killer instinct? Why do we look like we are half asleep? We lost this game right here. This is on our coaches. I dont know what the halftime speech was, but we could have ended the game right here. Put them away. Instead we came out flat. What i observed, is that we were the better team. That is the positive news, we have the personnel to be good. We looked like a top 25 team tbh. So why did we lose to a very average Colorado team, and a bad defense? Coaching. I love Frost, and think he is the best guy for us, but coaching lost us this game. In summary, what we should be most dissapointed in is our lack of offense (specifically in the 3rd). We played scared, what happened to the no fear of failure preached by our coaches? Where is the 2AM running game? Where is the tight end passing game? The playcalling? These last 4 questions are where im upset. And they ALL come down to coaching. Give Frost and staff time, but make no mistake, our players didnt lose this game, it was our coaching, specifically our offensive play caller, specifically Frost. He is a great coach, but he is human, and this game showed us all that fact. Our defense DID NOT lose this game, it was our offense, and specifically the play calling, specifically Frost. Peace and love to our Huskers.

Exactly. I'd rather we lose throwing caution to the wind, than go into a shell like that 2nd half. I will say it again. After our loss to the Game c$%ks, Corey Raymond said look at them and look at us. That was 8 years ago. I watch a lot of college football and I am still "looking at them and looking at us".......

These kids were sperm when we our guys were dominant. Those ghosts don't exist for these kids. Only fans who long for the good ol' days remember them.

I like to talk football details after a game like this instead of just dumping out frustration on the team. There was a fair amount of improvement on offense from week 1, specifically: 1. The high snaps were greatly improved. 2. Jurgens blocked better. 3. Mills ran a little better. 4. Adrian didn't throw into double coverage as much. 5. Adrian's completion percentage was better. 6. Adrian threw for more yards. 7. We ran the ball better. 8. We had way more offensive yards. I am really frustrated with Walters & Frost for that third quarter, though. We'd have good first down plays where we'd get the ball outside for 5 yards. On that second down play, stop going empty backfield with five guys wide. Just stop doing that. You need a power run play there on 2nd where we try to smash through for 3 or 4 yards. Also: Adrian does not run that well out of an empty backfield. Stop doing that, also. He runs way better when he has a running back or tight end out front to block for him. Anyway, I like the fact that the offense got serious and fixed almost all of their major mistakes from week 1. That's really important, no matter how mad anyone is about blowing the 17 point lead. We have to have better interior power running in order to put games away; to me that's really the punchline in what happened yesterday.

Well this is my first post here on Huskerboard and hopefully it wont be my last. I have looked at this board for a few years and have enjoyed reading everything up until yesterday. It seems to me that people just want the instant gratification of having a winning season, blowing out opponents by 35 points by half time, and a team that will just dominate right out of the gate. Well safe to say that is not whats going on. It seems to me people have forgotten how long it took Osborne before he got his championship team together. It took 22 years with multiple 9-2, 9-3, 10-2 seasons to get his national champion team and titles that we all know so well and want back so badly myself included. The amount of fair weather fans I am seeing and the comments I have been reading about getting frost fired and replaced are not only making my blood boil but also upsets me. We all just need to calm down let the coaches do there thing. The people who just want the instant gratification should just take a step back and think about all the hard work that Tom Osborne put in. Now for the record I am 32 years old so I was a little guy when everything came together I never saw all the work that went in to get the national championships of the 90s. You know this is Nebraska we are hard working people, we all know what hard work is, and we all know if we work hard toward something that we well get that. It just seems to me that some people have forgotten what hard work is or dont know what hard work is or a goal for that matter and working toward a goal and I think thats the trouble with some people. People need to take a step back and take a deep breath and just enjoy the ride. I had a feeling with all the hype people would get there hopes up way to high then have it come crashing down after a loss like this. Think about last season and think about these first two games and how much of a change there is. I am happy with just about everything and IMO the team is 100% better from last year still rough around the edge but I think we are getting there. Just have patience people and cool your egos we will get there it will just take time. And if you cant then maybe you need to do some self evaluation about your life and were your at.

OP isn't wrong. If literally any other coach came in and did as poorly as Frost in his first 14 games he wouldn't be getting nearly as much leniency as Frost is getting. Saying the seat would be warm is a gross understatement.

To those of you that are saying this is a talent issue...if you honestly think Colorado is more talented than us, then well, you’re wrong. This is not a talent issue. This is like a cloud of self destruct hanging over our program that we can’t get rid of.

I’m as disappointed as the next fan but I also remember so many of us pledging back during the Frost Mega Thread that we would give Scott a chance. So let’s give him a chance.

So Frost takes over a team with really no talent and after 14 games he's a problem? Those who thought we were just going to move into year 2 and win every week are the problem. I never heard players say the let down Riley after a loss. Frost is trying to teach this team how to win. That requires going all out in practice and on game day. The reason the second half went to hell wasn't the play calls. It was effort. The players have to learn to play 60 minutes, not the coaches.

To put this in perspective Colorado State put up 31 points and 505 yards on this defense.

We had Stanley and Ozigbo as well as upperclassmen linemen last year and went 4-8.

It's not about talent, and quite frankly, it never has been.

It's not all about talent. We have that on the roster. It might be another year or two before we get them ready to play. I remember for years I complained repeatedly about the square peg round hole of previous OC's Wats, Beck and Langs (honestly had to look him up). Frost is in year 2. With a few of his guys playing on offense. Mo, Wan'dale, Mills to name a few. The OL is pretty much other coaches recruits. Same with the D.....I guess I'm to the point that again we are watching square peg/round hole and will for the next 1-2 years. Cally had Franks kids, Bo went in with pro style WCO, Riley to those spread option "multiple" and completely ruined them. New system. New schemes. New coaches...... It is going to take a while. Longer than any of us had hoped. I think that Frost needs to do some soul searching on what he really wants to do here schematically. Look at his staff. His coaching methods etc.... What worked at UCF might not work here. Oregon's O without Husker power gets you beat. The reality is if Frost can't turn things around, I am unsure who can. He needs time and I said to myself I'd give him that time. As some one mentioned about being at the game and watching behavior, culture still has a ways to go.......

I agree this team is better than the one that played CU last year. But, not necessarily in every position group. The O line is clearly struggling, although I am of the belief that it will make considerable imrovement as the season proceeds. The WRs are, so far, not showing much as a group. We had been told over and over that we have a bevy of good WRs ready this fall. Haven't seen them yet. The TEs are supposed to be much improved but really have not seen them either. Stoll had several plays but that's about it. The RBs are clearly lacking in something but with the O line play being so inconsistant, we may not really know yet. The defense may not be statistically any better (I have not looked at the overall stats at all) but it is clearly playing more aggressively and getting more big plays and etc. Itr is without a doubt much better. The return game is also improved, although yesterday was not a game to really evaluate them as their Kickoffs and Punts were superb. Really no chance to show much. The punting is improved (our punter was arguably the player of the game for the Huskers). The kickoffs were much better and we can't fairly judge our number one place kicker as he hasn't played yet. But it is very troubling that a team with 150 plus on the roster doesn't have two decent or good kickers. Kick coverage has been 'OK'. We are 1-1 (that's better than 0-2). We lost in OT on the road so we were not' embarrassed and 'should of, could of, would of' won that game if we were in better condition. I suspect we may be bigger and stronger but the the conditioning has a long way to go. There is way too much talk from the coaches about 'we're going to freely substitute every few plays to keep guys fresh'. Substitutions are fine but athletes at this level ought to be able to play hard for a dozen snaps at a time without being 'gassed'. The O line did improve considerably this week and will keep doing so but we need to substitute them every couple series as well. We need to build depth and experience in the 'losing' seasons so we are ready to win long term.

Nebraska has relied on chunk plays for literally decades. You don't score 40+ PPG 3 yards at a time.

This is the dumbest comment I’ve seen on this thread. This team looked incredible in the first half. Better than any team we’ve had in years. There was a major mental collapse to begin the third; some older players dancing, joking around. I was 5 feet from them the entire game. There are still cultural problems created during the worst coaching hire in history (Mike Riley). This stuff takes time. Frost is still considered by all in the media, with way more credibility than you or any other nay sayers on this board, as one of the top 20 best coaches in college football. Get off the bus if you’re not willing to take the full ride to success town. Anyone else agreeing with this idiotic take above can get the hell off the bus too. Go be a CU fan, sounds like you’d fit right in.

Scott is a top coach. There is a major culture change underway. He’s working with a fragile team. The newer players played hard the entire game. The older ones didn’t. I was 5 feet away from them on the sideline yesterday (see the last couple pages on the game thread where I cover this.) Their are still some hold outs from the culture change and it’s obvious. He had some bad play calls, no doubt, but he’s our guy and the best coach we could ever hope to get.

Newspapers, websites and tv needs to make money to pay the bills and we are gullible enough to eat it up every year. It will continue.

Frost knew what he was doing asking for 7 years guaranteed. he came into a sh!t show. He does not appear to be the type of guy who would throw kids under the bus, but I am sure he feels us lacking in areas and realized it would be a complete rebuild. We are much stronger compared to our selves, but maybe not as compared to other teams...We have a long way to go. I tempered my expectations (tried) going into the season, but can't help but think the team, staff and fans bought into the hype. USA showed issues and CU ripped the band-aid off..... I think last night, or I hope it was, a humbling experience for Frost. I hope he goes back and re-evaluates his schemes, system and coaching. I hope re recognizes that there is nothing wrong with tweaking things. Whether this is in players, scheme, coaching responsibilities etc. We got out played and out coached in that game. Everyone needs to learn from that (top to bottom) adjust and move on.

Yes Frost has to work for us long term. I think he will but this thing is still a major work in progress. As many have pointed out we have not established an OL that we need to consistently win. We may need to think about getting some young guys reps there like Benhart. Is Mills really 220 lbs? He looks smaller than that.

Martinez may be the best QB that we have had but he is not Heisman material this year.

Nebraska's offense has major personnel issues. The interior of the o line is just bad and i dont know if that's something you can fix in one season. Cam has been an offensive lineman for a very short period of time and the guards dont look like they're ready for prime time let alone a sun belt team and a pac 12 bottom dweller. Might be time to slide the elder farniok inside and let benhart learn on the job at right tackle.

Why are some fans so critical of this football team. We are not a great team right now. It is going to take time. Have patience they will learn from their mistakes.

I disagree with your assessment. We can pull talent from those areas and put together winning football teams that compete for championships and I refuse to settle for the idea we can't do that anymore.
