  1. Maybe the coaches want to reward Nelson for his attitude and effort to show the rest of the team that his work ethic and passion for the game is the standard which they should hold themselves.

  2. If nothing else, we lose nothing from our current LBs when he's on the field, and he's only a freshman.

  3. Hickman moving up the Depth Chart is encouraging. Regardless of their star rating and position, if they are gonna be more effective - play em. 0 Star Kade Warner is better then a 4 star? Who cares play em. TE recruit better blocking and route running then the WRs? Who cares play em. Cam Taylor a freshman but gonna give 100% every play? Play em. Garrett Nelson gonna make freshman mistakes but run around like a madman? Play em. I still say bowl game be damned, if they are gonna get more effort and set the tone culture wise with these dudes that are rough around the edges - play em. I think the most frustrating part of this season isn't that we've played poorly, it's that we get the culture talk every week but see the same faces every week. Nebraska fans will embrace a hard working team that loses games long before they'll embrace a talented team that loafs.

  4. I think this move by Frost and Chinander has 2020 in mind. They are showing all of the younger guys that a true freshman can come in, bust his a$$ every practice and game, and get rewarded for that effort. That type of effort is going to be needed in S&C and Spring practice, and Nelson is someone who should be viewed as a team leader, regardless of age.

  5. You know, you could just put "I hate Lamar Jackson" in your signature to avoid working it into every post you make. Other than that - I agree with you. A lot of our guys are flying around, they need to be flying to their assignments though. That's the biggest issue currently.

  6. I see the Grinch has come to Whoville a little early this year.

  7. I think there are two important things Nelson brings. First, he's not ok with being just ok. Second, he's going to hold guys accountable in the weight room. The weight room is a big, big deal to Frost.

  8. I wonder how much the battle with cancer limited Dewitt and his time to recruit.

  9. Just like every week, I'm only considering stats from conference games. The numbers are percentile rankings (such that 100 is the best rating you can get and 0 the worst). No adjustment has been made to reflect strength of schedule differences. NU vs. UW Passing Defense completions allowed per game: 56 (NU) to 92 (Ferocious Animals) completion percentage allowed: 27 to 99 yards per attempt allowed: 65 to 91 touchdowns per game allowed: 59 to 59 qb rating allowed: 52 to 92 yards per game allowed: 74 to 86 Passing Offense completions per game: 37 to 30 completion percentage: 59 to 97 yards per attempt: 50 to 42 touchdowns per game: 10 to 14 qb rating: 37 to 56 yards per game: 36 to 13 Rushing Defense yards per game allowed: 13 to 88 touchdowns per game allowed: 8 to 87 yards per carry allowed: 12 to 83 Rushing Offense yards per game: 67 to 76 touchdowns per game: 63 to 56 yards per carry: 50 to 69 Scoring Defense touchdowns per game allowed: 23 to 86 points per game allowed: 26 to 88 Scoring Offense touchdowns per game: 25 to 39 points per game: 22 to 37 Total Defense yards per play allowed: 36 to 90 yards per game allowed: 37 to 94 plays per game allowed: 51 to 56 Total Offense: yards per play: 40 to 43 yards per game: 52 to 35 plays per game: 74 to 29 Turnover Margin fumbles gained per game: 5 to 84 interceptions gained per game: 53 to 53 turnovers gained per game: 15 to 77 fumbles lost per game: 12 to 12 interceptions lost per game: 64 to 78 turnovers lost per game: 32 to 44 turnover margin per game: 16 to 66 GBR!

  10. I would assume a head coach getting paid as much as he is would have the mental fortitude to count to 4. However, I have been wrong a lot this season.

  11. Dude gets it. Happy for him, and, well deserved. It's not about physical talent, and it's not always about making plays. It's about doing trying your hardest to do the right thing all the time, on and off the field. Frankly, a reaction like this one to receiving a Blackshirt has been missing for a very, very long time. As far as Jackson - good for him as well. I'm former US Army, but anytime a fellow brother (or sister) in arms gets an accolade like this one and is holding up not just the reputation of whatever organization they're a member of - but also showing others how it's done as a former member of the US Armed Services, I will forever be a fan. And at least now, we can at least have someone proficient in Combatives out there on the line

  12. Sure, I get that, and that is great, but that shouldn't be the only rationale to be a Blackshirt, IMO. And that play in question: he might have had a successful bull rush on a RT, but he was nowhere near making a play. He has also, on more than one occasion, ran himself out of a play and given up rush lanes/cutback lanes. Can he grow into a good/great player? Sure. His playing time this year is more of an indication of the lack of depth we have more than his actual ability at this point in time, IMHO.

  13. Lol explain. I'd rather watch him make freshman mistakes at 100% speed then watch Davis and Ferguson make the same mistakes as Seniors every game.

  14. It is extremely unsettling just how bad they are at recruiting this year. Gunnerson was recruited heavily by Chins and Frost. Dewitt and Ruud have fallen flat on their face this season on the field and on the trail. If results in those positions don't step up next season they are the first two gone. Dewitt especially.

  15. I just think a big portion of all these fan expectations were set up by Frost. If he would have tempered things from the start people wouldnt be expecting much this early. People are upset because they were told we might have filet mignon this year and we got stew meat.

  16. Wow. It’s taken only one week for people to move into full fledged rationalization of what a poor season this has been. and we haven’t even played Wisconsin or Iowa yet...

  17. Look back at drafts and combines. The first time in yrs we had a good showing, outside jano, was last yr. farmer actually led oline in a few categories. Look at Jake cotton when he played, Andrew Rodriguez,....you think they actually lifted anything but burritos and quarter pounders when they were here.

  18. Ummm ....jurgens is by far, as in not even close, our best oline player this year

  20. You're kidding right? You're talking about a guy whose protegie won the Heisman. He helped recruit Vernon Adams to Oregon from Eastern Washington. He recruited Justin Herbert who will be a top NFL pick this year. He identified Milton and Vedral at UCF. Regardless of what people think about Martinez this year the kid is talented and a lot of coaches wanted him even after missing his senior year. He identified and brought in Luke McCaffrey who many wouldn't recruit as a QB. And he had Logan Smothers committed before other big programs came calling. He signed the highest rated class at Nebraska in decades last year. Yes Jurgens had struggles at the beginning of year, but he's cleaned them up and is currently out best lineman. Ohio State had Burrows on their roster for three years and didn't think he was good enough to start. The little he played was not impressive. Choosing your talented freshmen over a transfer who couldn't find the field in three years is not a failure to identify talent.

  21. I don't see this staff playing them. I think they have a "plan" and are sticking to it regardless.

  25. Way to not comprehend what I am saying. I’m not bitching I am stating facts. When the coaches say Hickman has been the best perimeter blocker, than why the hell has he not been playing? Why is Noa and Williams still playing if Hickman is a better perimeter blocker, which those two are supposed to be in charge of in multiple sets? If Rhamir is as good as advertised and Held/Frost can’t stop giving him rave reviews why waste him playing one snap a game and not just play him? Instead they continuously put Robinson and Mo, when he played, in positions they were not comfortable with and that’s running between the tackles. Teams that win play their best players and when this staff paints themselves into a corner by saying who their best players are and how good they are, but then don’t play them, well that is going to start raising questions.

  26. This feels like a red flag being thrown up. We are not a disciplined defense. We're regularly forgetting where the help comes from and how to adjust. Will be interesting to see what happens on Saturday.

  27. There is a ton of fans who share your same thoughts. Apathy is truly setting in. I think it is particular bad this season because fans bought into the national media hype and that has blown up in our face like a short wicked m-80. Most fans have a want it now approach to football and in our case, that wasn't going to happen. However, for those who pay more attention, like those on this board we definitely expected some improvement, especially with what we had returning and with how our schedule set up( I preached 8-4 was the floor during the offseason) Instead we look worse than last year, we have 3 games left in which two of them are against teams who have back alley jumped us for years in a row, we are going to miss out on a bowl game again, and we don't have a positive outlook for a 2020 season in which the schedule is significantly harder than this years. So now instead of fans saying " well next year we should be better" that narrative changes to "who the hell knows." Recruiting has also fallen on very hard times as can be seen by the bottom of the barrel offers this staff is making to JUCO guys who's best offers are Illinois or UMASS. We offered a guy who has only played 6 freaking games of JUCO. Add that to the fact that the guys we have brought in aren't playing because the staff wants to stockpile talent for next year, which is fine in theory, however how many games has that cost us? If Johnson is this good why is Mazour and Belt getting carries over him? If Hickman has been our best perimeter blocker, which is VERY important for this offense to function, why has he not been playing all year? This adds to the frustration of fans as this staff has preached No Fear of Failure and the best guys are the ones who will play, but they have shown all year that those are just words and not what they actual practice.

  28. For me I would feel better if Frost thought he had a 6-6 team- but if he felt like they would be a dangerous team preseason I would be concerned about his ability to have an understanding of what talent we do or do not have.

  30. Agreed. We have some very young guys that are emerging leaders.......Wan'dale, Nelson......and I think guys like Jurgens and McCaffrey will also prove to be really good leaders. I'm not sure why this year's captains are struggling, but they are.

  33. So it's more the player than the coaches. We are #11 in the country in punt coverage - we've given up 24 punt return yards on the season. We are middle-of-the-pack on kickoff coverage but we're #112 in the country in ow many kick returns we've faced so I think a lot of that has to do with not having a kicker who can kick it into the end zone. Field position and kick coverage are not the same thing. We are middle-of-the-pack in both return games. Everyone has penalties on returns. Again, field position and quality of returns are not the same thing.

  34. It needs to be stated again: Many fans clearly assumed that the fairy tale story of an 0-12 UCF team being turned into a 12-0 team in two years' time was going to roughly happen here. Posters on this forum can back peddle and claim that they didn't think that, but that is pretty clearly what happened. As the reality started to set in that year 2 was the same basic dumpster fire as year 1, both Frost and many fans again have blamed Riley for current failings. I've asked several times: At what point is it no longer ok to blame Riley? Because if Frost says these same exact things verbatim by this point next season, it's going to be getting pretty old.

  38. Once again, the narrative doesn't really match the results. East leads 10-9 with two games to play. West Wins Wisconsin over Michigan 35-14 Wisconsin over Michigan State 38-0 Purdue over Maryland 40-14 Iowa over Rutgers 30-0 Minnesota over Rutgers 42-7 Minnesota over Maryland 52-10 Minnesota over Penn State 31-26 Illinois over Rutgers 38-10 Illinois over Michigan State 37-34 East Wins Michigan State over Northwestern 31-10 Ohio State over Nebraska 48-7 Ohio State over Northwestern 52-3 Ohio State over Wisconsin 38-7 Penn State over Purdue 35-7 Penn State over Iowa 17-12 Michigan over Iowa 10-3 Michigan over Illinois 42-25 Indiana over Nebraska 38-31 Indiana over Northwestern 34-3 Yet to Play Nebraska - Maryland Indiana - Purdue

  43. Wan’dale is not a transfer. He’s a TRUE freshman who we got to reflip from his home state school. And he’s given more than could be expected. Jurgens is a redshirt. Martinez is only a sophomore! We have 4 and 5 star lineman DEVELOPING this year as redshirts. We are real hot on Betts and Manning, could be instant talent. Mills has another year, and we finally have a kicker that’s healthy. Its been a damn bumpy road, but to act like the sky is falling even tho we been up on 3 opponents early and lost is crazy. One to two more clicks and we’ll be fine. And by fine I mean we’ll win those very soon and compete in others. We return like 19 dudes after a 60% roster flip! Get a grip. We’re young, inexperienced, and growing. I believe and can’t wait til we start winning so negative Nancy’s can pick on the next freshman or process. Could Frost have toned down a little rhetoric? Yeah. But he’s building competition and expectations. I like that.
