  2. As soon as you link something positive. Uplifting as I requested. Zero evidence? Do you not remember not being able to buy toilet paper, hand sanitizer, etc. Because people were hoarding materials. Im sorry there is basically no point in discussing further if you dont think there are political aspects to this. Now dont go off the deep end and say oh you are a conspiracy guy. I am not. I know the virus is real. It is killing people. But come on. Depending what media outlet you follow you will get extremes. The left makes it sound worse and the right makes it sound better. The truth is in the middle. So please dont act like the media gives a fair portrayal of what the truth is.

  3. Hind sight when this thing is over is the only thing that will determine what we should have done. Many people have different opinions- you believe yours is right. As most people do- they believe that what they believe is the real truth. The real truth is no one knows what the hell they are talking about. If Herd Immunity turns out to be a real thing- which it is in most cases of viruses and it was with the most closely related virus SARS. So history being a good predictor Covid will fall into the category of Herd Immunity being a real thing. I dont know where the narrative of it might not work for COVID comes in. Show me some evidence why we should throw out past history. Other than it supports a culture of fear and being able to say you better do as I tell you because herd immunity might not save us. I am just not a fan of absolute claims. Maybe change the narrative to wearing a mask gives us a better chance to play football. But what I see is, wear a mask and you get football. s#!t no one knows that. Bulls#!t claim.

  5. It is incredibly telling of the kind of society America has become that we have 30+ pages of arguing over masks in a thread where all participants want football. Maybe we all wear masks and there's still no football. Likely because of the refusal of too many people who listen to the wrong sources we won't have a season. It's likely too late. But if all you had to do was wear a mask... what logical argument is there against that? It seems to have worked in Europe. It worked in Hong Kong, it worked in South Korea and Japan. It's just a mask. How is that a bridge too far for people?
    5 points
  6. Ok- I am going to try to explain this in more detail for you. I am not opposed to masks- I am sure they will help slow the spread but not stop it because the virus is much smaller than what the masks prevent. BUT, like I said I don't see how they solve all the issues being raised by lots of people on this board about the logistics of the season. The players will not wear masks when they workout, when they practice, when they play other teams. So no matter how cautious we are now- infections are still going to happen during the season. Maybe Ohio State has to forfeit to Nebraska because they cant field a team. Those issues are not going to go away even if Bob wears his mask in the stadium or at the grocery store in august. So how are Masks in July going to solve those types of problems? I ask that question because the narrative is- wear a mask and we will have football. Ok so maybe football starts, then gets cancelled after 2 weeks. Then you will be listening to people b!^@h and say I wore a mask why is football cancelled. It is dangling a carrot with false hope that if you comply you will get this reward of college football. Seriously what if Herd Immunity kicks in some of these larger states and cases start to plummet August 1? Now that would be a real sustainable path to a full college football season. I am in no way endorsing being careless for college football's sake. I am just saying we are all guessing on what the best action is. Think how much the advice has changed: this is no threat to the US, minimal threat to be a pandemic, it lives on surfaces so scrub your groceries when you get home, its thought to be spreading on gas pumps- wash your hands, oh nevermind its unlikely it travels on surfaces its mostly within 6' of someone indoors. NO ONE KNOWS. I don't claim to have all the answers. I just don't think anyone else does either. If people think masks could help I have no problem doing my part- its not like its a big inconvenience in anyone's life. If they are wrong oh well I wore a mask for a couple months. If they are right then it worked. But don't sell me that the only path to college football is if you wear a mask. I don't want to hear absolute truth's when there is not one right now.

  8. Frost makes a really good pint regarding Covid and football. To paraphrase, we need to change our mindset about sports and Covid. Covid is here regardless if we play football or not. We can keep the athletes as a safe as possible, but they will still attend school, attend parties, embark on "life" etc....There's no way to live in a bubble. To say that testing will prevent an athlete from getting covid is dishonest....He makes some valid points....All of it in the link below. https://journalstar.com/sports/huskers/sipple/steven-m-sipple-if-college-football-is-to-be-played-frost-believes-change-of-mindset/article_197ed922-d7a1-58f1-8236-720586b89919.amp.html

  17. Hospitals in Arizona, Florida, and Texas are starting to hit ICU and bed capacities and are pushing into surge capacity already with no signs of the spread slowing. Deaths lag cases by about two weeks so, we'll likely see the death rate start to tick up over the next weeks. It already has in those three worst hit states. Hopefully it won't go up as much as it did at first because we have better treatment and medicines now, but there is concerns about the amount of medications already. The CDC warned today that testing capacity is starting to be stretched. The goal was to protect the healthcare system and buy time to learn more about the virus and treatment options. Then once you slow the spread keep common sense protection in place like protecting the vulnerable, contact tracing and wearing masks. That's what every other developed country did and continues to do successfully. Flatten the curve, protect the vulnerable, contact trace, wear a mask and go about your life. That's why they have sports in Europe and are continuing to open. I never saw a single expert say stop the spread completely. In fact, most said as we reopen yes spread will continue and may increase, but if we wear masks, test/contact trace and socially distance the spread won't get out of hand and we can go on about our lives with minor inconveniences. Instead, everyone decided the hell with it and disregarded all reopening guidelines and now things are spreading so quickly it's impossible to contact trace, testing capacity is running out, hospitals are filling up and we are running out of time to stop it without drastic measures again. You're already seeing businesses close on their own, governments close them and people saying the heck with it and staying home. Gasoline usage dropped 4% week over week as people make their own decisions to stay home.

  19. Here is my question. Can anyone answer this. What is the actual goal at this point with the virus? First it was keep hospitals from getting overloaded, we dont have enough ventilators- do your part. Then somehow it turned into stop the spread completely. If hospitals are not overloaded, death rates are going down compared to infection numbers. So if masses of people are getting infected but hospitals are not overloaded and deaths are occuring at a low rate. What is the goal? Do we want to go back to shutting down the economy, have more people lose jobs to protect a small percentage of the population of the elderly and immune compromised from serious complications or death? Or is the smart path to protect the small percentage and find a way to resume life for the other 95% of the population? I dont have the answers- I dont claim to be all knowing. I am asking common sense questions. Fear in the masses can cause hysteria and people to act irrationally.

  21. I'll just say that this is a fantastic time for Americans to assess where they're getting their information from. And if the people/places they've gotten their information from have led them to not wearing masks and not taking precautions that the rest of the world has taken, it's probably a really good time to stop listening to those sources.

  22. Yeah, major counties in DFW & Houston made it mandatory 2 weeks ago. So not a shocker for us. It's a good move. On record, I've been wearing mask everywhere since Mid March. Nothing to it, just common sense. Even if it's 2 minutes inside a QT for Sprite and Doritos. It's good seeing everyone having it on.

  23. I agree. I am not a sheep. I am an ardent supporter of our Constitution.....I wear a mask. It doesn't hurt me. It might or might not help (too much politicizing to know anymore), but I do think that it helps....If we want football wear a mask in the stadium. It's out doors (cuts exposure) and mask just helps.....We tried no masks (again misinformation) and got the whole country shutdown....Let's try wearing masks and see what happens.....They are not 100% effective unless wearing an SCBA so herd immunity will still take place....Although we still get colds, flu, strep throat etc.......

  24. This is an excellent way to sum it up. You're not gonna have the luxury of knowing the outcome to make your decisions right now, you have to educate yourself and act early or you can't retire! Except in this case you may end up with lung damage or someone you care about dying. Isn't it worth it to try to make things better? What is the harm in trying? Some people will argue simply to argue because they think everything someone else says is wrong even if they may get hurt by that decision. I see some folks get about an inch deep in a subject and make a decision based on previous bias and absolutely refuse to put any more thought into it. It's mind boggling and sad.

  25. This is flawed logic. Doing nothing and waiting until it’s over is not a plan.....well, it seems to be dear leaders plan but it’s not a plan that will help mitigate the damage. Just because there are some unknowns about the disease is no reason to ignore the best information we do have. Masks help limit the spread. That is known. That is a fact. There actually are some folks who know something about it. They are commonly referred to as experts, epidemiologists, doctors, etc. So yes, there are some folks who know some truths and know what they are talking about. And I don’t believe anyone here has guaranteed football will occur with mask wearing. You may be Misinterpreting what “wear a damn mask if you want football” actually is saying. That is intended, and rightfully so, to mean that we likely won’t have football if people continue to not wear masks. It’s no guarantee that football will happen with masks but rather well supported and intentioned reasoning that it won’t even be a possibility unless people start helping to limit the spread. Really, this shouldn’t need to be explained to anyone who is paying attention or who is remotely trying to acknowledge facts. Nobody here is making absolute claims but some seem to be willfully ignoring the experts and what is known about this deal. If you want a chance at a football season being played, do your part and wear a mask to limit the spread. Please don’t wait until it’s over months/years from now to determine what it is we should‘ve been doing right now. You know what, it’s too late then. That’s like refusing to save for retirement, ignoring your financial advisor’s recommendations, reaching retirement age and only then realizing you should’ve saved some money.

  30. The original goal was to keep hospitals from getting overloaded. The current goal is to keep hospitals from getting overloaded. There's a point where dead people, hospitalized people, and sick-at-home people will also devastate the economy. No one said the choices were easy, but a long history of global pandemics suggests extreme caution. The people who recommended this approach never said we could stop the spread completely, just limit its damage. That hasn't changed. We reopened the economy and relaxed restrictions. The virus surged back, notably in states that escaped the first wave and/or mocked its seriousness. Hospitals are now getting overloaded. Rinse and repeat. I see people working really hard to get as much as possible back to normal, including sports. They are listening to the science, stats, and other countries. And believe it or not, the vast majority of politicians need it to work, too. There is no political upside to shutting down beaches for the Fourth of July.

  36. Hospitals in Florida, Texas, Arizona and California are getting overwhelmed. Hospital staff is warning the community they're low on resources and beds. That is the goal, don't overload the hospitals. If hospitals are low on resources, more restrictions will be placed on states like Florida, Texas, Arizona, California. That includes no students on campus. You think if Florida, Texas, Arizona and California don't have football - there will be a football season?

  38. What the heck even is this kind of thinking? Who wants to create a culture of fear? Why can't we just wear masks because it's the prudent thing to do and it's working throughout the rest of the world? These wild claims and insinuations of motivation just confuse people. The evidence on masks is clear. It's been posted in this thread many times. Pretending that isn't reality and that mask-wearers are just fear-mongering is crazy - especially from a person who claims to wear a mask. The hangup on the mask issue is that people aren't being nice enough about it? LOL

  39. Had to watch his highlights again as I really enjoyed them. I suggest folks run through them again and freeze the plays as he receives the handoff. Look at his blockers and see how he picks out seams and follows blockers. Run it again and watch him run through the seam then freeze it when he gets into contact. Note the arm tackles he breaks, the dead leg he employs and the Yac yardage. Displays some balance at times too. Enjoyed some of the blocks thrown on those runs too. Can't wait too see how he does after 2-3 years of college weight training and nutrition.

  42. I'm friends with a few non athlete Nebraska students who have recently tested positive for it. One had pink eye and no symptoms- apparently that is now a symptom? Another had a mild head ache for a couple days and then nothing. The third was tested out of caution and has had zero symptoms. According to their doctors, this is the norm with kids their age. It just doesn't have much impact on that age class. If it equates to mild to no symptoms for college age athletes, why can't they play a game? As SF said, they have just as good, if not a better, chance of catching this if they don't play.

  43. https://theathletic.com/1889693/2020/07/02/college-football-most-dominant-programs-rankings-50-years/ 4. Nebraska Record: 468-154-5 (.750) Average: 5.26 National championships: 1970, 1971, 1994, 1995, 1997 Score: 0.26 Nebraska was so good on an annual basis from the 1970s through the 1990s that the past 20 championship-less years — in which the program has mostly had a 9-4 ceiling — don’t drag the Huskers down much. Even with a win percentage of .619 since 2000, Nebraska ranks fourth in overall wins in the past 50 years, and it’s also in the top five in SRS average (15.52), major bowl wins/appearances (13/25), AP poll finishes (38), weeks spent in the AP poll (78.9 percent), percentage of games won by double digits (59.3) and more. It leads all Power 5 teams in scoring (34.26) and point differential (+16.26) in that span, too. The Huskers began this period with national titles in 1970 and ’71. They had a Barry Switzer/Oklahoma problem after that, but Tom Osborne won national titles in 1994, ’95 and ’97 with an option-fueled dynasty churning out unbeaten teams. From 1970-2001, Nebraska was ranked in 99.4 percent of AP polls, according to College Poll Archive, and it finished ranked in all 32 of those seasons (top 10 in 24 of them). The past two decades have stripped a lot of the luster off Nebraska football, with lingering questions about whether the program can ever recapture past glory on a consistent basis. Regardless, the numbers are the numbers: When the past 50 years are viewed together equally, Nebraska has been one of the most dominant programs, even if it isn’t that today. Flip around the Huskers’ trajectory, and its placement here would seem obvious. 20 years in the wilderness and Nebraska STILL leads the nation in scoring and point differential over the past 50 years. Pretty incredible.

  44. Not that clear cut, and that is not hard to figure out either. If we wear masks and it seems under control so we allow full stadiums or people in stadiums and tailgating and outbreaks start again. No football? Teams start getting mass infections because they were sheltered for 6 months leading up to season. No football? My point is simply I don’t see how wearing a mask now provides a solution to those questions I have seen discussed for 30 pages on this thread. It doesn’t matter if it’s in control in August- that just means football may start and get what 2-3 weeks

  46. People fail to see how masks would help because they're using bad information. If we had worn masks in March, April, and May like we were supposed to, we wouldn't have the vast community spread like we do now. Players could more safely (not "safely," but more safely) gather to work out without risking getting the disease. We stopped quarantining and most importantly stopped wearing masks (or never did in the first place) and now here we are today with that curve going sharply up and Fauci predicting we could have 100,000 new cases per day. We won't have football this Fall because too many people have resisted wearing masks for... reasons.
