Since it appears fatality is becoming less of an issue. I just want to ask a question to all- please pause and actually think about it. Remove all politics out of the equation and answer honestly. If when this virus started- we all knew the fatality rate was this low. The main cause for concern is a low percentage of people may have long term or short term side effects. Would we be talking about shutting down businesses, shutting down sports, schools etc? I honestly dont think so. Sometimes when you go so far down the rabbit hole. People dig in their heels on what they believe and want that narrative to be true. But sometimes you have to pause- look at all the facts and say wait a minute we are going down the wrong path here. I just think people have been in such hysteria since this thing broke that no one has paused and said ok what are the actual risks here. I just dont think people would freak out over a small percentage of people with side effects. Hell have you ever read the small percentage of side effects they show on almost every prescription drug? Heart attack, stroke, on and on. No one worries about popping the pill when their is risk. I just feel like the country is in this mob mentality and people have lost their f#&%ing minds.

That is from an opinion piece by a doctor, not a trial or even a paper. He provides no links to any of the trials he's claiming support his conclusions. The only paper he gives a reference to is his own paper from May 27. What really undercuts his case though is the anecdotes he uses to draw conclusions from, which is exactly why clinical trials have strict controls and methodology - to prevent the exact cherrypicking of data to draw conclusions that doctor then does throughout the rest of the article. He doesn't point to any clinical trials because every clinical trial conducted so far contradicts his conclusion.

There's really not that much disagreement among scientists. Scientists are a lot more comfortable than politicians and the public when discussing uncertainties. We ask them for definitive answers but they typically want to know more before declaring anything as fact. We could all benefit from a peer review process, but we're incredibly impatient as a rule. A Tea Party organization recently launched a group of front-line healthcare workers to promote hydroxychloroquine as both treatment and cure. The political motives are much clearer than the results -- the narrative is to go back in time and support Trump's early endorsement of hydroxychloroquine, blame the media for not reporting the success of hydroxychloroquine (only Breitbart covered their presser on the Capitol steps) and literally state that hydroxychloroquine and zinc eliminate the need for wearing masks. The medical establishment never said hydroxychloroquine wasn't worth pursuing: they knew all about it from malaria treatments. By the time Trump spoke they'd had the first run of tests and found the results to be either unsuccessful or inconclusive, but kept hydroxychloroquine in the mix. Trump took that tiny glimmer and ran with it. Most folks in the medical community thought it was irresponsible for the President to endorse it as a cure to a frightened nation. That's not a conspiracy against Trump, but it does reveal why scientists would prefer he shut up about all the things he knows nothing about.

The scientists that promote HCQ also tend to promote crazy ideas like using alien DNA to cure disease. Not all scientists are created equal.

Fatality has and remains to be estimated at between 0.5% and 1%. That fatality rate doesn't change a thing. Still more than enough to overwhelm hospitals and leave more dead than really fathomable. I mean how many deaths before you say this is serious and we have done the right thing to mitigate against it? 150k dead already. How many more before you say, 'hey maybe I was wrong'

That's a HUGE reach considering WW2 survivors are still alive not to mention the Korean & Vietnam wars. The implantation of the UN, the establishment of Israel, the Martin Luther King era and how he's effected life today with the end of segregation. (150 years to late IMO but his courage remains unmatched) What about 911 and millions of lives lost since? Biggest story of our lifetime so far? I most certainly think not.. it's not even the biggest story currently. Ask those in Syria or Iraq or Yemen or Iran or Libya if covid is the biggest story? I think we'll look back and realize the scientists were largely correct on this point --- COVID came in 5x more deadly than the flu and far more communicable, and dead bodies were soon being stacked up in refrigerator trucks and nursing home storage closets. Drastic measures and highly accelerated medical research began to mitigate the risk around the world. Relaxing public safety standards immediately caused a spike in infections, and although per capita fatalities didn't jump at the same rate it was a reminder we were still fighting a pandemic. If it doesn't get worse it doesn't mean COVID was no big deal. It means that the global response worked. The media will always dramatize a story, but they've basically reported the available facts, along with every flavor of speculation. In fairness, it's the biggest story of our lifetime. So far. FWIW....the U.S. was born on risk. Australia was born as a prison colony. If it's a contest of badass mavericks who mistrust authority, don't assume Americas have the edge over Aussies.

This just highlights the differences between Australia and here. A spike in deaths in Australia causing them to shut things down is 10 deaths a day. They have had 167 deaths total. If Australia's leadership were in charge of our country there would be no debate about sports this fall. They wouldn't be happening.

Gosh darn those NFL players who use their high profile to stand for things they believe in! I appreciate the military and am grateful for those who protect our country, but the military were the ones who paid the NFL to put the National Anthem on TV before games. The US Military is part of the NFL marketing machine.

If anyone thinks (or ever thought) that athletes were somehow not going to get the virus, I am not what they could have been thinking. Eventually nearly everyone will get it. A vaccine may someday help reduce deaths or even sickness for most, but it is not going away without it. Either society has to come to grips with this or it wont but the virus is a part of life around the world. There are a few medical experts who actually feel the worst of the virus is behind us but I don't see it. We could be as close as 100,000,000 infections nationwide and the recent surge may give us enough concurrent infections to create some herd effect. This could in turn slow things for several more months and vaccines and hydroxichloroquine could bring it down some more. Death rates still very low.

All we know is going by the data that is available. We can use Nebraska numbers and even go as far as to use ages 20-34. There have been 8,000 confirmed positive cases in this age bracket to date. If you use the lowest estimated multiplier, we have had at least 40,000 cases in this age bracket. To date, 141 of those people have been hospitalized and 4 of them have died. This gives us a hospitalization rate of .003 and a death rate of .0001. Even if you don't add the multiplier that the vast majority of experts say is accurate, the hospitalization rate is .017 and the death rate is ,0005. For this age class, the numbers indicate there is an extremely low likelihood the above scenario would happen. All of the above is using ages 20-34. It is widely publicized that people in their early 20s fair much better than people even 10 years older. The data suggests we are not placing these kids in a risky situation. One thing to consider. I have not researched this. But I remember reading something somewhere that a large majority of our statistics have come from a handful of cities. The entire United States is not failing at COVID. Nebraska is probably on par with the better countries in the world.

America has not locked down. You were never prevented from leaving your home, you could always go out, and many folks have, without following CDC guidance from early April to wear masks to curb spread. And here we are.

I may have mentioned this in another post, but the stats on that aircraft carrier that was pulled out of deployment due to a COVID outbreak, came out a while back. I do not remember the exact numbers, but.....Approx 5000 on-board. Approx 1200 got COVID, 98% asymptomatic or mild symptoms, 2 hospitalized. I did not hear the age of who was hospitalized, but l assume most of the crew are between 19 and 29 with older officers. I thought that was an interesting data point.

I don't know that you should view her as any kind of victim in their relationship. She knew what she was signing up for when she married him. She may not be as vocal, but things she has done or said lead me to believe her and Don are cut from the same cloth.

We had multiple times more cases and deaths just yesterday than they have had the entire time. I'll say it again, if Australian leadership were in charge here right now, this wouldn't be a discussion. Sports wouldn't be happening. And let's break things down a bit here. The soccer league is taking place in Sydney which is not on a lockdown. In Australia they have just shut down one area of their country where this outbreak is occurring. Why should they cancel? They knew the risk and understood that they could get sick. No reason for this; people die all the time; this covid is no different than the common cold. I say they cancelled for no reason and are looking foolish. Golfers know the risks and understand that they could get sick and go to the hospital; no reason to shut this down. Golfers go to the hospital all the time for things such as sprained ankles, a knee injury, a cut on their pinky, a blister on their foot from tight fitting golf shoes or, God forbid, someone not yelling "fore!!!" and getting hit in the head with a high velocity, low mass golf ball.

Where have I said it is like the common cold? Or anyone else on this thread for that matter? I agree, this virus can be serious for some-especially older people with underlying conditions. However, all the data we currently have suggests that it is extremely rare for it to have even a moderate effect on college age athletes.

This is simply politically motivated conspiracy theory B.S. It's been tried, it's been studied (multiple investigations with adequate methodology) and it's been dismissed as ineffective and mildly dangerous due to side effects (cardiac as I recall). Refusing to believe a scientifically validated answer just makes said "believer" look dumb.

You're welcome to provide studies from reputable sources that show it is an effective treatment. Or would you like to hear from the FDA?

This looks like a sample of trial data to me? If anything I think we can agree on something. (Why can no one agree on anything with Covid)? These seven studies include: an additional 400 high-risk patients treated by Dr. Vladimir Zelenko, with zero deaths; four studies totaling almost 500 high-risk patients treated in nursing homes and clinics across the U.S., with no deaths; a controlled trial of more than 700 high-risk patients in Brazil, with significantly reduced risk of hospitalization and two deaths among 334 patients treated with hydroxychloroquine; and another study of 398 matched patients in France, also with significantly reduced hospitalization risk. Since my letter was published, even more doctors have reported to me their completely successful use.

@GBRFAN just so you don't think I'm trying to run away from the topic I wanted to respond to your post. As it goes for Australia and US, there is a difference between taking risks and being stupid. I can't argue that we have Australia beat in the latter department. You can say this isn't even 5x the flu but the numbers would not support that argument. The numbers also don't support your argument that cases and deaths are in decline. That is patently false. Sure deaths are down from April, but they are up from June, and cases are up overall. Deaths seem to be following along but that data tends to lag. There is nothinb pointing towards a decline at this moment in time.

Knapplc, I don't think you can find one post where I've stated not to wear a mask. I wear a mask myself. The point is that there are plenty of other solutions to this problem that for whatever reason ... are being shut down. Why is this? I'm a survivor of Covid and I'm grateful for Hydroxychloroquine. I don't get why your solution is a mask. It's just silly. You on the left think a mask solves everything. It doesn't and it won't. You also shut down any and all solutions or other truthful options. The only good think about my post was that it got some of this crap moved to the Political pit.

Sounds serious... and very rare or there would be a lot more news covering other cases of it. Give him a couple weeks and revisit it before calling it a long term concern.

This is becoming a conversation for the P&R thread but you a greatly overestimating how much a lockdown hurts the economy compared to our current model. What we are doing now is hurting the economy. The fact of the matter is, if we had numbers anywhere in the range of Australia(adjusted for pop even) we could be rebuilding the economy right now. Little clusters of COVID still pop up but that is far more manageable than what we are dealing with now. Life would be closer to normal had we done things right and suppressed this hard in the first go round and it would take far less to suppress the subsequent waves. Jmo

I have a solution. Teams start the season in late September, play 10 games or what they can, and then we vote on who had the best season, and the winner is declared national champion.

Add in procedures for determining compensatory education for all Sped and 504 students, and then actually designing a compensatory program and it’s a planning nightmare. Parents were given a completely virtual option and 4000 of them took it. About 30.% The district has to pay for chrome books and WiFi hotspots for all. We have Cares Act money but not sure how far that’s going to go. The chrome books are now delayed in delivery.

Essentially any titles won this year in any sports would have an asterisk next to them. So why not look at this season as a way to try to play as many games as you can, make as much money as you can, entertain as many as you can. If delays or cancellations like this Marlins thing occurs then so be it. Wait a week or 2 weeks then play your next scheduled game and hopefully it happens. As long as you have a safe game environment let the game commence. Why does it have to be all in or all out. Just play as many games as you can. I am sure financially for these clubs and cities that would be better than saying no games. I know for me. If the Huskers have 10 scheduled games- but outbreaks occur and we only play 7 I would be fine with that. Take what we can get this year.
