  1. Yep. We did have a perfect punt and touched it down on their 6 - nice to see those better special teams moments. Our fourth drive: 1. Wide screen to Wan'Dale, +4 yards. 2. QB Wrap up the middle by McCaffrey for 3 yards. 3. Awesome pass protection by our line, Martinez hits Stoll over the middle for 15 yards and a first down. 4. Play action deep 50/50 ball to the sideline by Martinez to Vokolek, incomplete. 5. Inside zone handoff to Mills across the B gap, Farniok & Benhart both own their assignments and big hole for Dedrick, +8 yards. 6. McCaffrey in the shotgun runs a draw for +5 yards. 7. I-formation with Mills as FB and Wan'Dale as I-back, FB Trap to Mills for +4 yards. 8. Martinez in the shotgun, designed roll out to his right, Austin Allen springs wide open for +27 yards. Perfect play call here by Frost as we were muscling them inside and they probably thought we were just going to keep doing that. I wish I could create a GIF of this play because it's a thing of beauty; Allen starts out on the left side of the line, sort of in the Pistol almost and then sweeps across the right, chips a quick block, then gets wide open down the sideline. 9. Martinez zone read keeper outside, good speed by Adrian, +8 yards. 10. Martinez zone read keeper again, picks up the first down, +3 yards. 11. 1st & goal from the 3. We shift into this formation but then run Mills up the middle for the TD: You don't need to know X's & O's to know what happened on this drive - our offensive line kicked their a** and drove 'em back on every play. On our passing plays, Adrian didn't have a guy in his face about to sack him. That literally makes all the difference in the world.

  2. Martinez was 12/15 throwing, which is an 80% completion rate. IMO Warner probably should have caught that ball in the end zone and Adrian would have been 13/15 with one TD pass. People can say that Adrian was mainly just hitting shorter passes, but who cares? 80% completion rate is great.

  3. I'm hearing the home field advantage has gone from +3 to +0.5 However officiating has gone from 0 to -7

  4. Disagree. Bad blocking from WR is what we saw last year and it sucked. They need to play the entire position. Not just the glory of catching passes.

  5. We rushed for 210 yards yesterday against Ohio State and had 370 total yards. When Wisconsin faced off against the Buckeyes in the B1G title game last year (with a back that is sixth all-time in NCAA rushing yards), they ran for 200 yards against the Bucks. For comparison in our game against OSU last season, we only mustered 231 total yards of offense. I saw some improvement on offense. They'll probably take this video down soon and I can't make a GIF of it because those GIF making sites require the original video to be like less than 10 minutes, but click play below and it'll start on the first play of our third drive. Cam Jurgens drives his man back and then pancakes him, and then he gives him a little extra 'f you' at the end, love it: That's the kind of Husker football I want to see more of.

  6. You're a power 5 wide receiver, and a captain. A ball you have two hands on has to be caught. This argument that every pass has to be absolutely perfect needs to stop. We will never beat top teams with that line of thinking.

  7. Idk if you saw Adrian, Luke, Robinson, and even Thompkins out ran some defenders.tOSU is an elite team with elite speed. We will out pace the lower tier teams in the conference from now on.

  8. That was a pass Warner could have caught, not one he should have caught. That was high, hot and behind him. That's on Martinez for throwing a pretty poor pass to a receiver that was that open.

  9. Warner let a TD pass go right through his hands. Most level-headed fans will give our team a pass overall because of the talent we faced (and I think that'd be prudent), but on plays like that there just aren't any excuses.

  10. Looking at Saturday and some of the good play we had, and then looking ahead at the games coming up, it seems to me that Nebraska's season boils down to what happens two Saturdays from now at Northwestern, a team which has given us very difficult challenges since we joined the BIG. Not ruling out something good happening at home against the Badgers mainly because I am a fan. But realistically, we are going to be down, most likely anyway, a couple of defenders, and WOW Wisky was really impressive in week one, albeit against the Illinois football squad. Still, it looks like an uphill battle. Nebraska can have everyone back and hopefully be healthy for that Northwestern game. Shine in that one and you're in the win column headed home for Penn State. Pull an upset there and now you are running through the next four games and looking at the possibility of 6-2 and another chance to prove yourself against one of the top three in that game nine crossover. Plus a bowl game. 8-2 would be AMAZING. Lose at Northwestern, however. If you can't get momentum going and lose to Penn State. And then the back four looks like 2-2 if you're lucky. And that's 2-6. Momentum and getting a spring in the steps of these players is HUGE and that comes down to the Super Bowl at Evanston.

  11. Sorry to post again, but I was not complete. The time off could be longer if the re-conditioning doesn't go well. Also if there is evidence of myocarditis, the treatment is 3-6 months of rest. A lost season. I was involved in drafting the COVID protocol for our local area schools. The Big Ten's protocol is consistent with the American College of Cardiology recommendations. I believe the Big Ten would say that if it prevents one athlete from dying from Sudden Cardiac Death due to COVID, it was worth it. I would agree. The second test would indeed be a nucleic amplification test which is a more accurate test. All tests can have both false positives and false negatives.

  12. If you want to use your QB as your primary run game, that's fine with me. Guess that's one way to clear up a QB competition. First one with a broken bone loses. Get a fullback if that's the case...or better yet, put a TE back there to help lead block.

  13. We ran the ball for more yards against them yesterday than Wisconsin did in the B1G title game last year.

  14. I learned this was the first game of the season and looked like it for both teams. Defense looked pretty stout against the run. LBs looked surprisingly decent against the run but slow on coverage. Good hitting though. Secondary has no speed and needs a dose of mental discipline My big question about the offense was where is this running game everyone keeps talking about? QB draws and scrambles is not a running game. Actual running backs carried the ball 14 times. Combine that with a bunch of slow receivers and you have a pretty anemic looking offense.

  15. Disagree. You can't hold everybody else on the team accountable and then let a player here and there get by with not doing what is expected of the team. Doing so may allow for some immediate benefits but will erode the long term confidence in the rest of the team. I am sure Frost is pulling his hair out wishing his stars would just do what they are supposed to do when they are supposed to do it, but he can't cave or he looks a fool to the rest. It is his job, however, to figure out how to get them into the fold. Sounds like he is doing that, but you can't just throw out the fold because it is the easier route. We weren't winning the OSU game no matter who was out there running routes this week, and if this is what it took to "punish" the non committed and also to show the rest of the team the iron backbone of the leaders of the program, best decision of the decade imo.

  16. One last item. The CDC's 10 day recommendation which is that you may end self-isolation when you are 10 days post onset of symptoms AND have no fever for 24 hours without taking any fever reducing medications AND have improvement in symptoms, though resolution of symptoms is not required. The former re-testing protocol has been discontinued because they have not been able to isolate replicable viral RNA (essentially infectious virus) by 10 days in anyone with mild or moderate symptoms that meets those criteria. They have been able to isolate non-replicable viral RNA in many people for weeks after infection. So CDC says you can end self-isolation 10 days after symptoms start or 10 days after a positive test if you were tested due to a COVID contact. In terms of athletes as an example, if an athlete has symptoms on Nov 1 and has a positive test on Nov 3, they would be required to self-isolate until Nov 11, at which point thay could return to in person activities, like classroom activities etc. They would be evaluated with EKG, high sensitivity troponin (a marker for cardiac injury) and an echocardiogram. I believe that they also may have to get a cardia MRI. If these are negative, they are put in a monitored re-conditioning protocol. This usually is 10-15 minutes of sub maximal exercise and gradually increases over the next 6 days to full participation. One final thought on the positive antigen test. I suspect that Nick Saban had a false positive rapid antigen test and then had 3 neg PCR tests so he was allowed to return to the sideline. Don't know that for certain, but seems logical.

  17. Just for reference. The 21 day issue is present due to the following. The American College of Cardiology has recommended that all athletes who test positive for COVID-19 should have total rest (not bed rest, but no training at all) for a period of 14 days. Following 14 days of no conditioning and no weight lifting, they are probably put into a 7 days (assuming they perform adequately ) "re-conditioning" protocol. The concern is that there has been evidence that COVID-19 may cause myocarditis. Ohio State released some preliminary data in September where cardiac MRI's were done on 20 some athletes. 8 of these athletes met the MRI criteria for myocarditis. 4 had no symptoms and 4 had minimal symptoms. Myocarditis is an infection/inflammation of the heart muscle. Exercise during myocarditis can increase the severity. Myocarditis is the 3rd leading cause of sudden death among athletes. In Italy during their initial peak of COVID, there was a substantial rise in out of hospital sudden cardiac death, almost all of which was COVID related. That is the crux of the concern. 21 days is about the minimum that you could be out.

  18. I hope the test ends up negative. We can beat a full strength Wisconsin. I don't want any * by the win in anyone's mind. They beat up on a terrible team and we arguably played the best team in the nation. I like Nebraska Saturday.

  22. The first half is definitely worth watching there was some good. Second half the wheels came off a bit but not as bad as in the past. I don't think Martinez came up short. I don't get the hate on him. You can see him work his progression and no one is there for him. He ran well and his biggest mistake was a fumble while scrambling that was returned. Here's the thing though you have to compare Luke as the main QB and remove his gadget plays to really compare them. The last two drives of the game with LM at QB and AM off the field this is what they did. 6 plays, 45 yards, LM fumble. 3 plays, -3 yards, punt

  23. Benning (on BRO) made references that Manning and Fleming aren't doing what they need to do in practices and other areas to see the field. It sounds like those guys are trying to get away with things that aren't accepted by the coaches. I understand we want talent on the field, but if the coaching staff has certain guidelines to establish the culture of the team, all of the players need to follow those guidelines. Hickman and Brown missed the last scrimmage before the season with injuries, so they may not have been fully ready to go. Betts is still learning the offense, which can be challenging for a true freshman, especially with the changes in training camp and practice times this season.

  24. Nebraska 31 Wisconsin 20 Yesterday's game had a different feel to me, especially in the trenches. Our line play, against the best opponent we will see all season, was very good imo. That will translate to quite a few wins with the first being next week.

  25. Eh, I think there's a difference between were neutral and played bad. They didn't make any plays. But they were overmatched. I don't think they hurt us which would be playing bad. They blocked well and that sprung a couple runs.

  26. Sorry frost but all the receivers not named Wan'dale Robinson played bad.

  27. Actually pretty impressed with the offensive line. Averaged 6.0 yards per carry against our toughest opponent of the year. Without the sacks it was 7.1 ypc. That will work. Defensive line was almost as good. Holding Ohio State to 4.6 ypc is quite the improvement. ILBs played a part in that and seemed solid. We had 146 more yards this year than we had against them last year. And gave up 82 fewer. If we can close the gap by another 228 yards next year we might have a chance. It seemed like we were playing a guy short in the secondary. They had room everywhere. I'm curious if it's really going to be that bad or we were giving a lot of cushion to Ohio State trying to not get beat deep (even though we did a couple times). Pretty good completion percentage from our QBs and no INTs. Need to hold on to the ball.

  28. I learned that a lot of posters gave up on this team before the game started. I learned our offense is gonna put up a lot of points this season. I learned our defense is going to be pretty decent, unless they're facing the equivalent of an NFL team. I learned that Big 10 officiating is a ducking joke.

  30. Yep 7-0 at the time. I found it interesting that Day went for it on 4th downs twice (a 3rd one was nullified by penalty) in the first half. That tells me two things 1) he was confident in his offense to convert and 2) he felt the Buckeyes needed to keep scoring TD’s to keep pace with NU.

  34. Rewatched most of it. Offense actually moved the ball pretty well. The fumbles by Luke and AM were killers. This game kinda reminded me of the Wisconsin game last year. O would get a decent drive going, but just couldn't finish.

  36. I disagree. It is interesting how some took yesterday's games, both ours and Wisconsin's, as us being awful and them being incredible. I saw very different things and expect a very competitive game on Saturday, with a good chance of NU winning.

  37. The reason yesterday looked different mainly because we are starting to see the fruits of redshirting and S&C. Recruiting is improving, but we are not landing true freshman talent like an Ohio State or Alabama We look greatly improved from a physical standpoint on both lines of scrimmage. That alone means we finally have an opportunity to win against any remaining opponent.

  38. Cautiously optimistic after yesterday on both sides of the ball. I think it was a complete 180 in terms of physicality which is/ was our biggest problem against all the heavy hitters in the league, and to man up against Ohio State - we are on the right track - with a lot of work ahead

  39. From the endzone view I understand why Adrian rifled it. There was a small window between defensive linemen that he had to fit it through, and he couldn't see if anyone was coming from the middle of the field to intercept it. In hindsight he should have taken about 20 percent off there.

  40. I didn't see enough bad things from Martinez, and enough good things from McCaffrey to warrant a change at starting QB. I liked how McCaffrey was used in various places of the offense. Yes, it's gimmicky, but it produces chunk plays. What I want from Martinez is for him to accept that he doesn't need to make all the plays by himself. If he learns to accept what the defense gives him, and not always go for the big play, he will be a better player. Now, he did that for the most part against Ohio State, and then he had that back-breaking fumble in the 3rd quarter. That play was there for a few yards, which would have been a good first down gain. Instead, he tried to break it for a big play, and he coughed up the ball.

  41. If this were Osborne's offense, I could agree with you, but Frost's offense requires much more from the receivers than merely blocking well. If the receivers aren't making plays in this offense, they're playing bad, period.

  43. Which still amounted to OSU going up and down the field on us...I mean for f sakes, put some tighter coverage on with direct blitz/heat and atleast force him to throw immediate. I dont put a very high, "they know what they are doing" label on coaches...for the most part, coaches are people who are stubborn people who get machismo with their "identity" and cannot adapt

  45. I seriously don't understand anyone looking at today's game negatively: Our biggest question mark entering this year was the defensive line, and a brand-new two-deep looked better and more stout against a top-5 team than they did against anyone with a pulse last year Martinez hung in the pocket and stepped up instead of bailing to the right every time he felt pressure. Also looked like a much more effective runner than last year. Luke looked like a legit weapon with the ball in his hands and we appear to have a creative plan to use him in a variety of roles Offensive line at times *moved* a really talented OSU defensive line The secondary paid for our very clear schematic decision to sell-out against the run which made the numbers look a lot better than maybe the level of play. OSU has a top-five-NFL-pick quarterback and like eight future-NFL-pick receivers so getting upset about our corners getting beat seems very silly. Pass rush was inconsistent, but that's better than non-existent, like it has been the last few years against anyone with a pulse Linebackers appeared to have actual run fits and executed them reasonably well Team played physical as hell and seemed to care a lot more than it has at any point in the last five years There were some negatives. Those receivers are not going to get open against any even decent secondary. Somehow the snaps are still a problem. Fumbles and penalties. I'm not sure either of the QBs can throw the ball consistently. But people seem to be b!^@hing a lot about how the box score looks against an essentially NFL team instead of looking at how the game actually went and appeared before our eyes. I think that's pretty dumb.

  46. I said in the presser thread we could lose by 28 and still have all our goals ahead of us, still feel the same way. I love reacting to Husker games, but this is like losing to Nebraska in the 90s, take our loss and move on, just like 125 other teams would do against OSU. Next week is our measuring stick. Can’t let Wisconsin have their way with us with a mediocre rushing O and freshman QB. I have high expectations for next week and won’t lower them just because we got licked by an elite team.

  47. Nah. I can see kneeling down, but he had his backups in the game and they need reps. Pretty sure Nebraska had some backups in, too. I have zero problems with that TD.
    3 points
  48. I'm not happy, but I'm not disappointed, either. Too many of Ohio State's TDs were gift wrapped, but on some of them, it was the officials doing the wrapping. Honestly, the defense as a whole looked better than I expected against what is probably one of the best offenses in the country. Obviously we still need a lot more from the WRs, hopefully Manning provides that spark we need. OL didn't look too bad. Losing two defenders on questionable targeting calls suuucks, and is gonna suck again next week.
    3 points
  49. I’ll start off by saying that you cannot win with the Likes of Liewer, Kade, and Falck out there. Robinson was double teamed every play. Throw Betts, Flemming, Brown, and or Hickman to the wolves. They are the future. Nebraska is a true feast or famine team under Frost. Especially on offense. DL was impressive. Secondary got exposed and is now out for game two. This needs to never happen again. Especially the targeting.
