  1. Sorry but you people are 100% wrong. This team is like an awkward, gangly colt. They're getting their feet under them more every day. The fans are like a pack of selfish , entitled, rabid coyotes ripping, and tearing at them with every misstep. No one wants it more than the coaches, and players....no one. I trust they will sort it out. That gangly colt will be thoroughbred one day. And you'll feel like an a$$ for putting up headwinds, instead of trying to help.

  2. So what happens when we have a winning season next year? I think by playing this season we are going to see great gains next year. Don't underestimate how important getting this season in is.

  3. We end up with good kids, but I think overall we don't ever end up with the pick of the litter. We really never have. Some very good classes under Osborne, and what were considered good classes by Callahan. I have always asked the question in recruiting, do the stars reflect heart, dedication, loyalty and other traits needed to rebuild a program. The want to, not just the ability to. It does seem we lose the top kids rather easily after they once arrive. Not all but a large number. Maybe every program has this problem, but it doesn't seem like to me. I have never really coached football, other than my son's Pop Warner team as an assistant. Played football in high school and in the Marine Corps for a couple of different base/unit teams. My claim to fame was Ed Podalak running over me as a Sophomore in high school, breaking my collarbone. I have coached Olympic and World class athletes in Mountain Biking and motocross. All individual athletes. I never had the problem of buy in. Either they did or I didn't mess with them. Lines drawn in the sand from day one. I can not comprehend the difficulty of coaching 100 kids, on their own, away from home and the main guidance system they have had their whole lives. Getting them to all to march to the same drum beat has to be extremely hard. Especially today with the way kids expect so much because they have been told they deserve it since they started playing. I met Scott Frost during his Junior year. I know the drive he possesses. I know the guidance and the love Coach Osborne gave and has for him. I know the love he has for this program. I know he gives his all to this program and state. He has for a very long time and I don't see it changing. I have watched this board change so many times, over and over, good to bad, bad to good. Many saying things that truly hurt the team and the staff. We have a good coach, who is trying as hard as he can and you can see the disappointment he is going thru. Far more than any of us without doubt. He needs the fan base to support him, give him the time he thinks he needs. He sees the process every day. We see it for a few minutes a few Saturdays a year. He and his family live it every second of every day. Lets give him the time he has given us. He has sacrificed a lot to be here, yea we pay him a lot of money, but if we run him off, Nebraska as a program will be doomed. No other big name coach would come here other than to take the money. Patience I guess. I know it is hard. But it is what is needed.

  4. The problem with transfers is that for every Justin Fields, there's four Tate Martells. More often than not, they're guys who just plain couldn't cut it, rather than diamonds who got stuck behind another diamond on the depth chart. And the ones who really are diamonds usually don't end up at places like Nebraska.

  6. There are many reasons why I say this. The biggest reason is local talent. There isn't much around and when there is you want to land it. When you go to the coastal areas you will run the risk of them going back home for one big reason - culture shock. Los Angels and Miami are different cultures. Since Frost has been here there have been 2018 class: 5 were recruited. Zero remain on the roster. I don't get angry or frustrated over this since it was a class put together in a matter of a few weeks. 2019: 5 were recruited, 2 remain on the roster. 1 graduated. 3 are on the roster. 1 contributes, the other 2 are scout players. 2020: 6 were recruited (5 scholarship): Fleming will be out it seems so 4 on scholarship until Martin gets put on scholarship in Jan to move up to 5. So, out of the first two classes, you got 1 out of 10 that were recruited that will have already panned out. 2 still TBD. The 2020 class WR is a major hit and it's a blessing it is. 2021 top WR's: Wandale, Betts, Martin, Brown and Nixon. Hopefully Manning comes around and is ready to play next year. If that happens, it gives you a base of 6 guys to build from into the future. You get those 6 to produce and then what you hope for is 1 out of the 2 WR commits to pan out. Even though Fidone is a TE, I see him getting used right away as a true freshman as a pass catcher since there will be guys ahead of him in the TE room. So I can see a base of 7 WR's in 2021. I wished we could just go out and recruit 5 4-star stud WR's in two repeated classes and have the WR room flipped and fixed, but it's going to be a bit of a stressful process to get it up to the level we need it to be at since there aren't many talented kids in the area every year. Wandale is already a star. Betts will continue to develop into a star. Martin will be a very good WR. Nixon will be TBD. Brown is coming along and getting more and more snaps. The effort to fix the unit has been there, just gotta keep recruiting a big number each class and let the cream rise until we are a solid 8 deep. We don't want to be like WI's or NW's WR rooms where there is only 1 or 2 guys every year that do anything.

  7. How many more have transferred just from Nebraska and not done a thing? I view it as very similar to JUCO. You might find a couple but it's not the answer. There are reasons kids are in the portal or at JUCO. If we want to fix the culture, which I don't even know what that means anymore, it won't be through the portal. According to this more than half of transfers never even land in the same level of football again. https://247sports.com/Article/College-football-transfer-portal-2020-numbers-stats-purgatory-147042840/

  9. But Michigan state doesn't have to do because they had a long tenured head coach getting crucified. They have lost scholarships, changed an entire staff, and now successfully won more games as an underdog then Frost. IN 5 GAMES AS HEAD COACH. Burning to the ground is an excuse for people to use to rationalize the fact they thought they were correct. Frost has continually thrown his team under the bus, found dumb excuses after games. He also generally talks like it's not his fault we are losing. Sorry it's substantially his fault. Burning it down...such an terrible excuse for terrible football. From a guy that won't take some responsibility. Lastly the only time he shows any emotion is a freaking field goal play. Mel Tucker is better coach at Michigan State in his first year then Scott Frost is in his 3rd.

  11. Colorado and Nebraska's struggles dating back to Frank are pretty closely tied. That 2001 game was the first time I had ever seen my Husker team on the wrong end of a bad beating. Miami repeated that in the Rose Bowl, but that might have been one of the best teams ever. So it was the Colorado loss that stung. We've had our moments since, the kick and the pick being a big one. Then Frost took over. Colorado edged us in 2018. They rallied past us in 2019. That's not what gets me mad. Close games. We're breaking in new coaches and trying to restock the roster. But Scott needs more time...the rebuild is big... Blah blah blah Colorado doesn't have our tradition, or support. Or facilities. They pay their HC poorly and his assistants don't make much and don't have job security. Their school just doesn't love football. Fair weather fans. And their recruiting is bad. They've had three coaches in three years. How is it that they're 2-0 against Scott and 3-0 this year? They beat San Diego State today. Big deal. But they beat Stanford, which beat Cal this week. I don't know what to make of this. It just bothers me Anyone else feel the same way?

  12. It absolutely is NOT delusional to say those are mediocre teams we should beat. The delusional part only creeps in if people expected to win those games in our current state of disarray as a program. Also I don't think it's delusional to expect our team to not be so inept and ineffective. So we might need to be a little more careful with exactly what we call delusional.

  13. Out of the fourteen teams in the Big Ten, there's only five teams with a winning record. Five. Teams. Out of fourteen in the conference. Who have only been playing other teams in the conference. And one of those five (Wisconsin) only has two wins, six weeks into the B1G season. Like I was saying a couple weeks ago, take a freaking look around. Yes, all teams are affected by this crazy season and not just us, and it's turned into a s#!tshow almost all around. Don't read too much into this year, for us or anyone else.

  14. Hiring any coach to come here is a gamble. Even if we hired Saban, it would be a gamble. Could he win with the current talent? If not, people would just say the game has passed him by or he's just too old. We could hire Urban Meyer, and he could totally flame out as well. I really can't think of one single slam dunk hire we could make. I'm not sure I really buy into the $5 million gamble with Frost. What would he be making had he taken the Florida job? His road to success would have been much easier had he taken the Florida job. I would take Frost over Mullen any day of the week.

  15. I pretty much agree with the OP but have one clarification. CU's recruiting is not markedly worse than ours. At least it wasn't at the time HCSF dropped two to them. I think they do better recruiting than their record usually indicates. Location, mountains, snow/skiing, laid back atmosphere, etc. They always seems to have as good or better skill position players than NU has been getting.

  17. Nebraska were to pull out wins against Purdue and Minnesota. Then get a crossover against another "beatable" team like Rutgers or Maryland and finish regular season at 4-4. Hold on, there's more!!! Nebraska then gets invited to a mid-tier bowl against a "beatable" MAC team. What if Nebraska ends up 5-4 this season? What would be everyone's thoughts going into Spring Ball? "And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad So I had one more for dessert" - Lyrics by Kris Kristofferson, sung by Johnny Cash

  18. Pretty good incite form a guy who was an ok center.....He brings up some great points. Even has some comments form Coach K. Dom has some great points for sure. Maybe some of his old team mates will get him to coach like he played. Wild and angry...... "Four times, man," he said of Nebraska's snap issue at Iowa. "At some level, the kid's confused. I felt bad for him. Give the kid some help on the sideline. I mean, work on it. I'm sure they practice it. It was just really, really confusing to me what was going on out there." "I think you have to start taking the handcuffs off and letting it go. Playing a close-to-the-vest game, it's not working. You have to put pressure on defenses. I want to see the guy who played the game aggressively and had to go out and rise in the coaching world on his own. He's got to start coaching like that. I mean, this isn't going anywhere. https://journalstar.com/sports/huskers/sipple/steven-m-sipple-confused-by-nus-snap-issue-raiola-didnt-know-how-to-throw-a/article_e7370553-7ac4-5770-8b04-1f06ec33dc8b.amp.html

  19. It doesn't work for those people. The death panels from those unregulated insurance companies decide who gets what care and who doesn't. And those who get care are bankrupted by it. A civilized nation that boasts the "best" healthcare on the planet shouldn't force 2/3 of total bankruptcies out of unexpected healthcare costs. That's simply absurd.

  20. It does take a bit away from the top programs but it also helps them fill in any missing pieces too. It's more of a crap shoot when you get beyond the elite teams. Struggling teams like Nebraska is right now probably also get hurt by it because it gives players an easy out. Seems so many we have lost to the portal left very prematurely. It's one thing to say it prevents stockpiling and getting buried on the depth chart but what about these first year kids? IMO it really plays hell with a team's ability to build and manage the roster. I hate to be the old "get off my lawn" curmudgeon but CFB and players seemed to be doing okay before the portal. I hate the transfer portal and really think it has damaged the game. It is undermining the team first, student athlete ideals that made CFB so much better than the NFL. There is no loyalty left in the game and that really ruins it for me.

  25. 1/3 will become starters 1/3 will become contributors 1/3 will never see the field, medical redshirt, transfer, etc 2018 class (not a real class due to the time and job limits): 23 commits 7 are starters or in some games back up someone else, but mostly 7 start. So this fits into the 1/3 rule. There are 2 that are bench riders. It's time to tell them to seek playing time at another school. 1 that contributes and 1 other that is behind older players and likely will never become a starter 14 not on the team anymore. This is higher than the 1/3 rule. 2019 class: 5 are starters. Next year that will likely become double digits I think it is 3 no longer in the program with one that is now in the NFL Several are going to be two deep players next year 2020 class: 2 are starters, some could argue 3 with Mills injury. Should be 4 starters next year. 7 will be contributors Fans will list a bunch of names no longer in the program, but outside of the 2018 class, the 2019 class and the 2020 class are already trending correctly for the 1/3 ratio. It will take another two classes for things to "smooth out" and the normal roster rules for the 1/3 will be in place. I know fans want the roster fixed TODAY, but it will be two more classes before it gets to that point. For the 2021 class, I can see immediate contributors at TE and DB.

  26. I don't think geographic area is the answer. It is the kid you recruit. I was a Marine recruiter for 8 years, in the field. The Marine Corps success meter is not the number you put in the Marine Corps, it is the overall attrition rate. Meaning the number you put in that successfully completes basic training, MOS training and promotion record. Each Marine is tracked to their recruiter for four years. (This was a long time ago, so may be different now). Initially you are graded by enlistments, but promotions above E-6 your attrition rate played a much more important part. Meaning what you put in the Corps, made it and the Marine Corps was more successful for that enlistment. IE, you did your job the way it was supposed to be done. Stars are not the only part, is what I am saying. The kid has to have the heart of a lion. He has to want to compete from day one. Not expect to be given what ever he thinks he deserves for past success. Each day has to be his best, on and on. I have said for ever, we do not have the talent that the major programs do. You used to see it on the field, lack of effort, lack of concern for the game. Lack of concern for the offense if you played defense and the opposite. We needed to instill team instead of Me. I truly feel we are seeing that change. I do see kids that want to win for their team mates. But when one of these diva's leave we as a fan base give them a pass, it is okay because we should not hold up his development. That in my mind is total bulls#!t. You finish what you start, work harder, adapt and overcome. Not tuck tail and run. I know I am old school on this. But standards have to be set and maintained. But you have to start with the right pieces. I think Coach Frost is working towards that base. It just takes time. I have been waiting 20 years to see what I was used to seeing for many years before. I can wait a few more, not happily but feel we need Coach Frost to succeed more than anything else.

  29. That is what Ohio State does. Their WR scholarship layers and their high school states: Missouri (X3), Texas (x2). CA (1), PA (1), WA (1), OH (x2). Recruit good WR's from colder states. They will pan out at a higher rate since they are more used to colder weather and not the glamour (which is mostly fake BS) and beach lifestyle. The 2021 WR commits are from Georgia, Texas and western Florida. No Miami kids. I suspect Frost and staff have already learned the lessons I am covering in this thread for WR recruiting.

  31. I watched the highlights of the Purdue/Minnesota game and it looks like they're both running a similar flag football offense to what we run. If we run the quadruple fleaflicker option on almost every play and keep them confused about where the pea is gonna end up, like that Three Card Monte guy down at the bus stop, there IS a chance that we run the table and end up with that amazing record. I just hope it gets us into the Boise Smurf Bowl....I've always wanted to play in that game. Edit: If we make the Smurf Bowl, I will be there!

  36. But he gets playing time and that is part of his life experience. I think people are missing the reason for the portal. It’s not for LSU to get a Burrow, it’s for Burrow to find LSU or anywhere else he can compete for a job. I actually think it punishes(not right word) successful programs from stock piling and burying recruits.

  40. We do have a bit more to go on, besides the 1-0 record Tucker has versus Frost. They both have 5 games this year in the same conference, Tucker is 3-2 and Frost is 1-4. They both played NW, Tucker won and Frost lost. They both lost to Iowa. Two more common opponents, Ohio State and Penn State, to come. Not saying either of you is right or jumping in the middle, I just like to see more data.

  41. I don’t disagree with how important the lines are, but if you don’t fix the most important position in sports then everything else is just moot. The team can win 7-9 games with great lines, but this style of offense is dependent on a star quarterback. The QB needs to play at a top 10-15 QB in the country in order to effectively get the offense moving and be a contender for conference championships. otherwise change the offense to an I formation and dominate line of scrimmage with a game manager at QB. That can work too as shown by Wisconsin.

  44. They should be below the numbers. It’s IOWA!!! Ferentz IOWA. If NU would have attacked instead of sitting in their useless zone on 3rd and long, we might have won. Below the numbers? Let’s start with Iowa had 10 more minutes of possession. This is the telling number...other than the scoreboard. History tells us 285 rushing verse Illinois 245/256 Penn State 224 rushing OSU 225 rushing Iowa 2019 320 rushing Wisconsin 2019 300 passing Purdue 355 passing Indiana 322 rushing Minnesota 368 rushing OSU I’d like the numbers to go down. I’d like the Points Against to go down. Take away what their good at. Bring some pressure. Wrap up on tackling. Play your assignment.. Since some believe he will amazingly turn it around, why can’t we have a co-coordinator? Are you happy with the product? Do you think the way he runs the scheme is going to get NU over the hump? I don’t. I have said it since day one. I hear give it more time but the proof is in the pudding. At some point Frost will have to say goodbye or he goes out tied to him. I will expect more of the same until something changes. I want him to succeed. I want his defense to dominate. NOTHING tells me he will turn it around.

  45. Barry Alvarez had to do it. When a program is broken and accepted a losing culture, the only way to rebuild it is to "burn it down" and start over. It's the only way you weed out all of the issues. Sometimes that process can be done in a couple of years and others it may take a few years. It took Clemson a few years to fix their issues and now they are so damn good they can go up 24-0 against Pitt with 5 minutes left in the first quarter. When Saban took over Alabama it was a program that still had some good seasons but was struggling to maintain good success. When Saban took over Michgian State he essentially burned it down to rebuild it but didn't get over the hump before leaving to LSU. Bowden had to do burn things down and start over when he took over at Florida State.

  48. I get the frustration. And I'm not saying it is unwarranted. But there is literally nothing coaches can say in this situation that will make people happy. If they talk about what actually happened, people will complain that they should fix it if they know what the problem is. If they just speak in generalities people complain that all they're getting is "coach speak." He literally said it's not an excuse. Just said what the problem is. I don't know what else he is supposed to say.
