  1. When you're consistently outgaining teams and losing, that would point to your main systems being fine to even good, but needing to improve on the "hidden stats" like field position, turnovers, red zone scoring, etc., which I think most fans would agree we've been really bad at under Frost. That's why I really don't think we're as far away or struggling as much as people here like to say we are. Young teams are bad at that stuff and improve with experience. We've had young teams that are about to turn into veteran teams. And then hopefully we are able to "stay old" after that.

  7. Not to beat a dead horse, but Mike Riley's recruiting on the O-line was subpar. 2015 produced no starters (big get was Jalin Barrett out of Oklahoma who never sniffed the field). To produce 2 starters out of 3 classes (15, 16, 17) might be worse the subpar.

  8. https://www.google.com/amp/s/tellusdaily.com/2021/01/18/underselling-the-vaccine/%3famp This is really good news. It appears that two injections of either the Moderna or Phizer vaccine offer 100% protection from severe infection and prevents the possibility of spreading Covid as we were talking about a few days ago. "Though no rigorous research has but analyzed whether or not vaccinated folks can unfold the virus, it will be shocking in the event that they did. “If there may be an instance of a vaccine in widespread medical use that has this selective impact — prevents illness however not an infection — I can’t consider one!” Dr. Paul Sax of Harvard has written in The New England Journal of Drugs. (And, no, exclamation factors aren’t frequent in medical journals.) On Twitter, Dr. Monica Gandhi of the College of California, San Francisco, argued: “Please be assured that YOU ARE SAFE after vaccine from what issues — illness and spreading.”

  9. I guess I don't know that we can say at this point that depth will be an issue. Inexperience behind the starters is an issue but that's almost a given when you return three starters. We don't know if our backup linemen are that good. Neither does basically anyone else in the country. We also didn't recruit the OL particularly well for several years. In the 2016 class, only Farniok became a regular starter. Wilson started some. Raridon and Brokop were non-factors. In the 2017 class, Jaimes was a great get but Bando, Walker and Sichterman are busts. In the 2018 class, we only got Will Farniok as an OL. So... yeah. But Jurgens was in that class (as a TE, four-star recruit) so that helps. Three classes. Looks like two total regular starters (recruited as OL). Neither are still here. Since then, things seem to have picked up. In the 2019 class, Benhart (four-star recruit) and Piper are already starting. Banks will probably be a backup this year. Not much after that but that's a good base. In the 2020 class, Corcoran was our highest-rated recruit and looks to be a starter next year. We only took two OL recruits in this class because of how many we had to take in 2019. We also got transfers in Ezra Miller (a four-star recruit to Iowa) and Nouredin Nouili (freshman starter at Colorado State) to help fill in. In the 2021 class, Prochazka was our second-highest-rated recruit. OL is the spot where it takes the longest to develop and be ready to contribute. The 2016, 2017 and 2018 classes should be the fourth- and fifth-year guys next year. But that's not an option. We started a lot of younger guys this year partly because they are better and partly because there were few options ahead of them. So Jurgens is likely the "old guy" of the starters next year. Most everyone else that will contribute has only been here for a year or two. So it's tough to know who's going to work out and who isn't.

  13. I have always felt that you can read how good a HS program is by it's special teams. A coach has to have his hands on all of the details. If special teams aren't special? You may have a coach that is over his head. I know my view comes from looking at HS programs, but I think this may be true of CFB too.

  17. We had a guy who had a history of year two success at multiple locations. And we just fired him after year one. Without a good special teams “coach.” Not analyst. I’d bet good money we’ll be bottom half FBS next year too. It’s clearly not a point of emphasis up to this point. oh, and welcome to HB!

  18. People who think our coaches don't care about special teams or aren't trying to improve them are clueless. These are a lot more difficult, complex and time-consuming problems to fix than just telling your punt returner to make sure he catches the ball, but for some reason fans think systemic and long-running problems get fixed by snapping your fingers. It's fair to criticize them for certain aspects of the ST's performance, but these are problems of organization/talent/depth, not our coaches being like "let's not practice any punts this week, who care about that lol".

  19. I guess I have a problem believing Frost doesn't take ST seriously. He was on teams here where TO preached how important they are and he idolizes TO. These guys also have played special teams in MS and HS. The concept isn't rocket science. I keep thinking the problem with coverages is somehow either who we have on the units or how they are told to play it. But, this has been a major problem since even before Frost.

  27. I agree. However, that's not what happened, and that's why it makes Scarlet Revival's attempts at comparison asinine. The fabric of these situations are so cataclysmically different that discussing them as if they're on an equal playing field would make all of us more unintelligent for it. And, again, it's nothing more than a red herring. As someone who is neither liberal or conservative, it seems like the vast majority of your arguments usually devolve into R's vs. D's, or trying to compare something perceived as 'bad' among the D's to something perceived as 'bad' among the R's. The amount of rent free space R's and D's take up in one another's heads is astounding.

  30. Few things to note... he also beat a Kansas team that was 2-10, they also beat Penn State and Pittsburgh. He’s seven wins away from being Ohio’s all time winningest coach, led them to their first bowl game win, they’ve gone to bowl games 10 out of the last 11 years, including five in a row while winning the last three (bowl game stats do not include 2020). Oddly enough the last time Solich won a CCG, so did Nebraska. He’s been a nice little coaching hire for Ohio. Not great but extremely solid as stated. Just didn’t appreciate the negative context everything else was put in. Nobody will ever truly know if it would’ve worked out for Solich here at Nebraska. The odds were certainly stacked against him. He was 42-9 before that 7-7 season in 2002. They had a nice bounce back year going 10-3 in 2003. Why was firing him justifiable in 2002? Because of one poor season compared to the success of his predecessors?

  35. If you're not going to make the guy an on field coach, then hire someone who is doing it from off the field with success. I see a lot of people looking at football outsiders stats on here. Their Special Teams stats are garbage. 1. A touchback on a kickoff is not "efficient" for them. 2. A punt that nets 38 yards is. 3. Field position stats, while a function of teams are more dependent on O/D. You can have great teams, a bad O and a poo D and still get crushed on field position. 4. Sample sizes this year were a nightmare so any "analytics" are skewed wildly this year. Bill Connelly's S+ for ESPN stats much better, if you can get the full rankings. App State, Florida, NC State, Iowa, Kentucky Houston, & Army have been the best teams on SPT this year.

  37. Source: https://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/ncaa/fei/overallst/2019 Georgia, Iowa, ASU, OSU all ranked very high the last two seasons. All but OSU have a Special Teams Coordinator who has no other duties. OSU has a LB/Special Teams coordinator Our ratings have been horrid - obviously we didn't have a dedicated ST coach either season.

  41. Solich was a Cornhusker thru and thru. He didn't deserve to be fired they way he was. Say what you want, I liked him. Could he have kept the program, top ten ? He never got the chance to try, so we will never know. GBR!!!

  42. How bad of a season would Frost be able to survive? I think he'd get another year if he went 3-9. But would he survive 2-10? 1-11? 0-12? f#&% it. I'm rooting for 0-12 just to maximize the odds Frost is fired.

  43. I think the Solich firing was justified and really should have been done after 2002. The lack of success of his successors is frankly completely unrelated to whether Solich’s firing was justified. The guy ended up at Ohio U after he was fired at Nebraska, and I’m not aware of him even getting consideration for a higher profile job. For all fans of other teams critics Nebraska for the Solich firing, it is odd how none of them were willing to hire Solich or seemingly even consider him. And Solich’s tenure at Ohio has been solid but nothing really that spectacular. He never has won the MAC, has only 2 MAC East titles, never has finished with less than 4 losses (not counting this year’s 2-1 season) and has never beaten a Power 5 team other than a 1-11 Kansas team. Everything indicates the dude is a MAC-level coach.
