  1. As I've mentioned every now and then when this subject comes up: if either Taylor Martinez or Joe Ganz had that 2009 Nebraska Defense behind him, we may not be talking about his shortcomings, or learning anything from the run first/past first debate. We'd be too busy celebrating.

  3. Haarbeg is very intriguing to me because of his combination of size, athleticism and arm strength. I really hope we have some blowout wins this fall so he can get some game action in. He sure looks the part for Frost’s offense.

  4. I agree with this sentiment for most of the past 15 years, but 2AM wasn’t considered a run first QB prospect, he’s was a top 150 player at the time SF and co recruited him. He was considered the exact mold of what SF wants, a legit arm talent that is also a dynamic runner, he has all of the tools and I am betting that a better o-line and WR corps on top of his own work to improve will help him to have a great season.

  5. I think you’re taking the comments too literally. I saw it as a run first, pass second QB isn’t a formula for success unless you have top shelf talent everywhere else, like Ohio State does. But in regards to Justin Fields, he was so effective because of his passing ability, great receivers and a good O-line. Plus he could run, which was icing on the cake. If he couldn’t pass worth a damn, defenses would have loaded the box and minimized his running success. Just my take anyway.

  6. He said that teams with running quarterbacks don't win their conference and then that only talented teams like Ohio State can have success with QB run offenses. Those are dumb things to say, regardless of what our scoring offense ranked.

  7. Seeing what you've posted thus far, that would be a sound plan.

  8. Granted, I don't watch much cable news shows. But I'd be curious who these "lots of pundits" are. When I see footage of the "insurrection", I never see footage from the larger peaceful protest. It's always footage from the steps of the Capitol or the inside of the building. 100% of the people in that footage are insurrectionists and should lose citizenship at best and face prison at worst.

  10. Ha ha! I actually do think we'll be a lot better this year. It's just that, for the past three years I've been like Charlie Brown trying to kick that football: This is the year, I tell you. This is the year!

  11. Come on guys, it's bad enough they are pre-season top ten. I refuse to remember that this game happened and Niles Paul has tiny hands that can't hold onto the ball while he runs with out anyone chasing him.

  12. If you're saying that you have no use for Republicans who can't get past 2020, then you have no use for Republicans. Thank you for picking a lane. Together we can fight this GOP monstrosity.

  13. WTF????? You are saying SHE can't get past 2020? She is talking about it because the entire friggen Republican party cant get over it because their Dear Leader can't get over it. She is the one telling THEM to get over it. What a completely weird wacky twisted set of facts you live in.

  15. Okay...I'm not understanding something. I'm looking at Nebraska's schedule right now on the right-hand side of the screen, and it shows the following: 10/30 Purdue 11/06 Ohio St. 11/13 BYE 11/20 @ Wisconsin 11/26 Iowa We don't play Ohio State until November, after our game against Pur-f******-due. Additionally, when we play Northwestern: 09/18 @ Oklahoma 09/25 @ Michigan St. 10/02 Northwestern We're playing Michigan State (in Lansing...but MSU doesn't look daunting this year) the week before, and Ohio State isn't until November. Oklahoma looks to be formidable, but that's another discussion for another thread. Also, why are we discounting the Fightin' Frankies of Ohio? Northwestern will have to spend time preparing for that game, or Ohio will definitely deal them a non-con loss. Northwestern isn't a strong enough team to overlook a team like Ohio...not in the least.

  16. I think the only QB we've recruited under Frost that we promised could keep playing QB that others didn't was McCaffrey. AM was very much recruited as a QB. So, was Smothers. Haarberg's recruitment started late, but he was still looked at as a QB by the schools that recruited him. Bo did this a lot though.

  20. I want to add to this. You're exactly right and for this defense to thrive the way Chins wants it, they need the opportunity to take chances. It's hard to do that when your offense sucks.
    3 points
  21. If the offense improves, the defense will automatically improve. They won't be on the field as much, give our better players more rest, and the opponent will become more predictable in their schemes. I'm not saying the defense hasn't improved, but if the offense can be somewhat better, we will see an even better defense.

  23. Yes they did. The lost 7-9. I think that was the game we had like 34 turnovers.

  26. I'd go so far as to say if we had the 4 game redshirt rule (and Beck was smart enough to utilize it well), 2009 could have been different. So many times we just needed a little spark offensively, and even if TMart could only run read option that could've been huge.

  27. I don't doubt deaths are likely undercounted, but I still don't see why this is a Florida thing. It appears to be a question across the board, and boils down to various opinions about what is responsible for the excess in deaths we've seen in the past 14 months.

  28. Probably not for now as many will likely wait to see if this gets more traction. Sadly, they worry about pissing off the Trumper faction of the party and the ramifications that could then follow. They currently disguise it as needed “unity “ within the party. Just take McCarthy for example. Pretty pathetic. I’m convinced the overwhelming majority of all members of Congress care more about getting re-elected than doing what’s right or displaying any principles or values they may have.

  29. But the whole discussion we've been having, and the whole point of this thread, is that the GOP finds itself caught in a loyalty oath to Trump. When the job demanded advancing an actual platform, Trump generally followed the GOP playbook. But as a candidate, President, and now ex-President, the agenda was almost always about Donald Trump himself, and he spent an inordinate amount of time talking about his enemies. In one of the few speeches he made recently, he railed at a hand-picked group of guests at Mar-a-Lago about the Republicans who didn't back him loudly enough, and how they need to be replaced. The understanding is that future candidates and primary strategies will be running through Mar-a-Lago. You keep discussing Marjorie Taylor Greene, Laurene Bobert and Matt Gaetz as minor figures that shouldn't concern us, but like current and aspiring Republicans they have secured their political fortunes by aligning as Trump loyalists, despite their glaring ineptitude. Matt Gaetz should have been ousted from the party, and quite possibly in jail, but instead the ex-President hosts him at Mar-a-Lago events. You start to care about Republican leadership positions when the Republicans dump their #3 leader and openly declare that loyalty to Trump is the issue. That tends to influence your down party tickets in every state. In case you're really not following this, Trump is going to talk constantly about 2020, he has no further platform or agenda, and it is a cult of personality. It's really not a stretch to say the camps have split around a single issue: was Donald Trump cheated out of the election? Even Republicans who don't believe that are afraid to say so in public. That's pretty creepy. What you just stated above is exactly what Liz Cheney was saying. But you also chose to talk s#!t about Liz Cheney, as if she's yet another of your non-factors. By your own definition, Donald Trump is useless going forward. Pick a lane.

  30. Again, the service academies have some of the least talented rosters in the country and punch above their weight because they ***run the QB***. Bill Snyder basically ran the single wing and used it to turn around the fortunes of one of the worst jobs in Division I. QB run game has been one of the main strategies that less talented teams have utilized throughout football's entire history to even the playing field. You can hang your offense's hat on running the QB and still be a very good offense, and for us to be good it's probably going to be a huge part of what we do. Of course it would be better if we had a guy like Justin Fields who could do that AND throw the ball like an NFL player, but those guys are unicorns and come around very rarely, so just saying "We need to get a guy like that" is not really living in reality. And on the second bolded part, OSU also had the JT Barrett and Braxton Miller eras where they couldn't really throw well against equal talent and was still able to have some pretty damn good offenses that won a lot of games. We need to find as many ways to move the ball as possible, but running the QB is a completely valid one and can be the focus of a good offense. Let's get back to talking about Haarberg.

  33. I just hate how every rule is in place to make offenses succeed. I don't like how they protect the QB so much. They are on the field just like every other player, they aren't special. Now defenses can't read ques like O-line coming down field in pass vs run scenarios because they can get like 10 yard downfield before its a penalty on a pass. All this because the people who don't know anything about football just want to see points.

  35. I agree that the pharmaceutical companies are necessary. But they certainly qualify as a special interest that routinely abuses America's political system in order to fleece the American people. It's not the industry that needs to go, its the lobbyists and payoffs and corruption that is rampant in that industry that needs to go.

  42. What is insane about Donovan's answer is that he is an affordable housing developer that was also commissioner of housing and development for NYC for 5 years and the freaking HUD Secretary for another 5. How could a career affordable and public housing professional get that question so wrong? It is pathetic.

  44. It would be interesting to see something like this take shape. Not really set a platform but have primaries where candidates actually debate ideas that are important at the time. No litmus test for abortion, Trump loyalty, etc... The party may have both former Dems and Reps bringing a wide range of solutions to the table and actually talk about them instead of each other. I have a hunch that a reasonable candidate that came out of something like that would do really well in general elections.
