Not accurate. Even if it started as a joke it has been adopted. You can find pictures of Roger Stone and some proud boys doing it while out drinking. Were they kidding? Doesn't matter. also, can you imagine the anal pounding Roger Stone and some proud boys gave each other after a night of hard drinking?!? #pride You can also find Colorado's own Lauren Bobert (think Sarah Palin but dumber....I know, it's hard to do) giving a 2019 tour of the CO state capital to a small squad of gravy seals. They are also flashing that sign. I have seen some Proud Boys use it locally as well. And yes, the sign does get used for more than one thing. I remember someone doing it in a camera shot at a Cubs game, and a military cadet doing it during a televised sports game. It got a short wave of national media attention but it was clear to most of us that what they were doing was the game where you get someone to look at the circle, and you get to punch them. I'm pretty sure we have an early pic of coach Frost out recruiting and he is doing that. And yes, it does get used for 3 pointers as well. This is happening because over the last 4+ years white supremacy has made a rise in this country. I'm not really sure what that correlates with. We need to put it back down to the normal level America is comfortable with.8 points

Um…this isn’t cancel culture. This is dealing with a hand gesture that’s been appropriated by white supremacists…no matter how many times people claim “it was a hoax” and make excuses for white supremacists. If you or anyone else are butthurt by this, then maybe instead of making excuses for people engaging in white supremacy because they support “your guy”, you should be pissed off at the white supremacists and should be working to get rid of them and their enablers…6 points

It's also pretty vile to try to associate anyone who is upset about this with white supremacy. It's entirely possible the logo meant something important to people for reasons totally unrelated to a 4 year old internet meme.6 points

This isn't an example of cancel culture, it's a University making a pro-active, but extremely minor change to a University logo. It was done to avoid a potential issue down the road, and in their effort to make it a non-issue, peoples panties got in a wad over the change in Herbie's hand signal.5 points

Good gravy... Imagine being so brainwashed that you believe literally anything you just typed, especially the bold. Americans didn't invent slavery or racism, contrary to what Rachel Maddow told you, and America at this point would be as non-racist as any country in history if politicians (mostly those on the left) didn't benefit from dividing people by race. I've never met or seen a white supremacist, and I doubt you have either. These right wing figures you've been brainwashed into calling white supremacists are nothing even close to that, and even people such as Richard Spencer who stupidly self-identify as white nationalists are basically harmless. At this point, white supremacy is a label that has lost all meaning just like racism, because it's been highjacked by leftists who would rather attack someone with hate than debate the merits of their positions upon disagreement. Most of the time, when Democrats accuse others of racism, it's really a projection of their own subconscious feelings.5 points

For those of you (Archy?) struggling to follow along with this whole issue and Rand Paul specifically. Simple summary of protection/immunity from Covid, listed from least effective to most effective. Effective meaning- least likely to lead to infection, hospitalization and death. No Vax, no prior infection no vaccination no prior infection prior infection vaccinated prior infection & vaccinated Take away- Rand Paul is wrong and his words are not helpful if not downright dangerous. Sticking up for him is wrong and dangerous and makes a person look like a fool.5 points

I ordered a new Nebraska "track jacket" (full zip sweatshirt) and I really liked it because it had Herbie as the logo on the front. Well, I got it shipped tonight and it's has the "new" Herbie giving the #1 hand symbol instead of the "okay" symbol. I am so mad, I'm gonna return it right away!! Oh wait, that's not what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna be normal, realize it's a minor change to an otherwise, classic logo, and wear it like I do with all of my other Cornhusker gear.4 points

Silly me. I thought the discussion and replies should be based on what words posters are typing out right before they choose to hit the “submit reply” button. Always figured it was the posters duty to make sure others know what they are truly discussing. Most of us aren’t mind readers. I avoid this problem by not sticking up for political parties, politicians and people who are predominately wrong about everything. Maybe you should try it.4 points

Actually the more I think about it that would have been the ultimate power move. Keep the hand gesture and make herbie black and say "see he's not racist he's black".4 points

The entire point of the hoax was to trick people into thinking the OK sign meant white power. It's not a false narrative if it's literally what happened. Not falling for the hoax doesn't mean you're a white supremacist or in league with white supremacists. It just means you weren't duped by a very obvious hoax, and nothing further. I personally don't blame the university for covering their asses. It was a very successful hoax, afterall.4 points
-
That’s the thing. No matter how many times white supremacists and their sympathizers trot out the “it’s supposedly a “dumb joke”” narrative, the reality is that you have people using it for *that very meaning*, from trashy high school kids to Police Officers and community leaders. It’s a good thing this changed, and it’s rather telling about who is getting butthurt by this…or continues to trot out false narratives about reality.4 points

Was it done to avoid a potential issue or a past issue? Because your explanation contradicts the official explanation, thus making both your assessment invalid and the message from the university is simply virtue signaling a non-issue.3 points

And those same people will not like your comment too lol How do you determine who’s a white supremacist if and when someone makes that hand gesture? I’ve seen several athletes and politicians make said hand gesture after 2017. They must be white supremacist right?3 points

Spot on...and if you read the ESPN article it clearly points out, "The Anti-Defamation League lists the OK hand gesture in its Hate Symbols Database and explains how the altered meaning originated on an internet bulletin board five years ago." https://www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/33173015/nebraska-revises-mascot-hand-gesture-avoid-tie-white-supremacy It may very well started off as a joke,, but when the ADL identifies it in their database as a hate gesture, you might wanna think twice about using it3 points

Who tried to cancel UNL? UNL? This was a non issue until UNL made it an issue. Freakin' UNL and its vendetta against UNL!!!! This is all just laughably pathetic at this point2 points
-
Well, on that, I hope everyone can agree it is offensive and we as a fan base need to see it end!2 points
-
All discussions about the “symbol” aside, what’s the outrage? As far as I know, no one tried to “cancel” UNL because of Herbie. The University was not forced in any way to make the change. The “mainstream media” is only reporting on this after the fact. My understanding is that TWO YEARS ago the marketing team at UNL felt the change was needed to protect the brand. The marketing team has constantly evaluated and changed logos, uniforms, etc. Why are so many people so pissed at UNL and the “libs” and the “msm”?2 points

then a good first step might be to not empower them more by letting them appropriate hand gestures that have been used for another meaning for who knows how long. so does it matter which hand one uses to make the sign, cause when i make the sign it looks more like a "w q"?2 points

We have lots of unproductive threads on here...some I contribute to. This one is by far the worst offender. I'd say either lock it or move it to another forum. It's hardly about nebraska football now...2 points

If I were him I would get vaccinated out of precaution, but the data is the data. Hospitalizations and deaths are not much different between the two groups. Multiple studies have shown this. Especially if you fall under the age of 65. Sorry to burst your bubble2 points

The point is Paul is wrong and people should get vaccinated and boosted to protect themselves from Covid. I get your point is to defend Paul and anything Republican for some stupid reason, but man it gets old. Particularly over this subject where it's easy to find and actually listen to Paul and other republicans say stupid s%^& about not needing to be vaccinated.2 points

One thing I've been discovering over the years and putting an effort into is considering what or how I communicate is received or interpreted by the persons I'm engaging with. What is intended doesn't always match up with what is experienced for another. That's especially the case with modern technology where text is the form of communication (as an example) involving context, tone, etc. The other day I listened to a back and forth between two groups where nothing meaningful was accomplished other than more conflict due to provocations on the part of both. Point is, we can better better understand each other and can achieve more constructive dialogues. I don't personally associate the gesture with supremacy. I'm certain that's true for most folks that have liked Herbie "as is". It doesn't make those of us mean, inconsiderate or hateful. However, some do take exception to it for legitimate reasons other than it's real intent. To me, Herbie is cool is either way in accordance with my interpretation. Others, see it differently regardless the intent of the original/real intent that is offensive for them. Those of us that do take exception to the original gesture, are they being unreasonable? No. And you know, all of us continue to learn as we negotiate life gaining a better understanding of what's in our interest individually and collectively. I don't have an issue with making the change with respect to gestures. Along with that though, lets please not shame those that don't interpret it or associate it with supremacy. I happen to be wearing an old Cornhusker sweatshirt now that I wear around in the house in the wintertime that I've had a long time. Like others, I do don't consider myself superior. That's not to suggest that there isn't hate in the world. There most definitely is! And in many ways, it's become more intense. Through understanding ourselves and each other having respect for one other we can lessen conflict with the prospect of living a good life together.2 points

If you look hard enough, you can find racism in anything and everything. Common sense is completely gone. Cancel culture is on full display. And if you disagree, you are racist. All or nothing mentality. We have way too much time on our hands if we are looking at college mascots. Meanwhile, border is overrun, inflation outta control, taxes through the roof and the US about to get into war with Russia. But lets focus on a hand gesture by a damn mascot.2 points

Looks like the funds set out for bridge repair didn’t go to other non-essential infrastructure and instead went to a totally separate funding base that has nothing to do with bridge repair. It’s my bad for not thoroughly vetting that tweeter message before posting and I own it. If I lived in PA, I would still be upset with the legislature for diverting those funds. The bridge collapse is the extension of what looks to be their financial incompetence. And before anyone thinks I’m trying to change the subject to dunk on some Dem, I believe R’s control the state legislature.2 points

One of my favorite things of the last few years is watching old conservative men call people snowflakes…… And then something like this happens and they become snowflakes. No one said Herbie was racist. What they said is that white supremacy has started using that symbol. We should all be able to agree that not affiliating with that, even if remotely, would be a good thing. It’s pretty simple. If you are offended it is because……….2 points

This isn’t an empty woke change. The symbol is being used for white supremacy now. Regardless that Herbie could be grandfathered in, separating our brand from the symbol is perfectly fine.2 points

So a community in a more diverse city is actually more accepting and welcoming to new people (who may be "different") than other cities or areas of the state which are more singular in a "way of life"? Color me shocked.1 point
