  1. Riley was a different kind of bad. Scott is near narcissist who takes no accountability and is a poor leader. Riley is cream puff who is thrilled to be mediocre. Scott can't get out of his own way. His fire and passion can be built upon. It's his ego and inability to lead anyone that will be his downfall.

  2. It's now the strategy of opposing coaches, and it's being spoken out loud: just hang in, play it safe and wait for Nebraska to self-destruct. Don't point at any single player or play: in the fourth quarter the Nebraska players and coaches stopped doing whatever they did well and lost as a team. New player from the portal? Coming from a more successful team? We're going to teach you how to lose. Do you know who might have tried that onside kick? Scott Frost's mentor, Chip Kelly. Except his would have been executed with speed and cunning and probably would have been successful, and had it failed Oregon would still have won by 17.

  3. The creativity comment (I've bolded) is a real smack in the face to a coordinator. Not only is it inaccurate but it's cheap and isn't constructive. Creativeness wasn't the issue. We operated well offensively for the first game with a newly installed scheme aside from a lack of a running game which is mostly attributable to the play of the line. There was improvement. Rushing wasn't nearly sufficient enough. Part of that aspect might've been scheme sure but how much of it was dictated by what the line is capable of... We need to find ways to proliferate physicality on both sides of the ball. We weren't effective stopping the pass or run. Didn't put pressure on the opposing quarterback. Tackling was often poor. The onside kick attempt was a momentum buster. We never regained our composure after that. Just about every area of our game play deserves scrutiny. The offense needing to be more "creative" isn't one of them. Don't do that to the person that's going to bat with (and for) you. If Scott had said that we could've played better in about every area and that we were not the physical team that we need to be that would have been on target. Swing and a miss.

  4. Chinander's best season as a coordinator was last year when we were 47th in total defense. For comparison the defense that got Mark Banker fired was 33rd. Maybe it's as simple as Chinander being one of the worst defensive coordinators in school history and it's just not as obvious as it should be because our expectations are so ridiculously low.

  5. As bad as it is. Riley was worse. They were on their way to a winless season if he stayed. I have no doubt.

  6. It's really important to watch this game in the same context as the 3-9 season. This team is capable of coming out with focus and discipline. They have good talent and good schemes and good results. They are never out of the game against supposedly better talent, and always have multiple opportunities to right the ship against lesser opponents. Other teams always make better in-game adjustments than the Husker coaching staff, but there Nebraska is in the fourth quarter, still with a chance to win, still running plays that worked perfectly well a quarter or so ago. And they just fall apart. They know they're going to fall apart. By now we do, too. The body language says it all. Can a single head coach change this overnight, or at least in a first season? Yes, The good ones do it all the time.

  7. From Frost to Freeze I guess that’s progress in one direction

  8. So you give up trying to get the ball back with some time if they score or go out on downs? We got into FG range, and barely missed. They make that FG no one would question the time outs. Or NW score anyway and now we have no time people would be pissed. Two ways to look at it but those time outs didn't cost us the game

  9. We just got beat by a team that wasn't creative at all. NW didn't do anything fancy, they just lined up and played physical football.

  10. Riola was a questionable hire in the first place. You should feel bad if you were a d!(k to anyone who showed a small amount of skepticism.

  11. Nebraska fans are odd. People had problems with Pelini's character and then bring up names like Freeze, meyer and herman.

  14. I never saw the dramatic push that we heard of during the spring and fall. Players commenting about how much better the are at firing off the line. How they are more aggressive. NW ate our lunch, took our lunch maybe and bought dessert. It was embarrassing.

  15. This isn't what I was saying at all. I think Joseph will be the next HC with Whipple OC/associate HC. I don't believe either one of them come to Nebraska knowing they will be out of a job with one bad season.

  16. I don't know. Seemed to me the very few times they had a crease to run through they looked pretty good. But on the majority of the running plays they were met by a wall of purple at the LOS. Unless the OL can open some holes I don't think it matters who we have in the RB room.

  17. 1.) Our MLB play was bad. 2.) We got zero pressure! 3.) Offensive line play was bad especially running the ball. 4.) Wrs looked good. 5.) No depth at TE like I thought we would. 6.) Oliver Martin shouldn’t play again. His effort before the INT was bad but his effort after the INT got me out of my seat. (think he did this last year against Wisconsin as well) 7.) Special teams won’t lose us games this year as long as Frost doesn’t make anymore decisions on them.

  18. Option football as a base offense is dead. Also no recruit who is a half decent QB/WR would come here ever again. No need to go back to one extreme because it used to work. Tom just happened to run the option and have success with it not Tom ran the option so he had success. Tom won because he was a great coach, system aside

  19. After a day of reflection this is what I think we learned. 1. Frost is still Frost. He inserted himself into the game in a major way and it was a massive failure. 2. We really miss all those seniors on the d-line. It’s going to be a long year in the B1G if teams are able to run on it that easy. 4. We still make any mediocre QB look like Tom Brady. 4b. Very disappointed in Nelson, Mathis, Tannor’s ability to get to the QB today, but dial up a hood blitz Chins c’mon. 5. I really liked what we saw from Thompson, he seems to offer some things that Martinez doesn’t like keeping his eyes downfield. That scramble play was awesome. 6. Am I the only one that noticed how wobbly CT passes were? They were not right spirals at all now wonder we had so many drops when you get a 70 mph knuckle ball thrown at you. Every throw was just off in the second half, hope he’s ok. 7. Still don’t love the RB situation but we’ll see what he can do the rest of the season. 8. Special teams was good other than a bad play call. If we have our punt game from a year ago instead of Buschini this may lose it going away. 9. I’m afraid this year will be much like last. Last year our defense was good enough to keep us in games against everybody but not great enough to win games by themself. This year it’ll be the same on offense. CT will keep us in most games but not sure they will be good enough to win most games by themselves. It seems like it’s been 20 years since we’ve had both a good offense and defense in the same season, one unit is always a letdown. 10. We just made getting bowl eligible a lot tougher. I think NW is a better team than the Illinois team we lost to week 0 last year so I’m not giving up hope for 6 wins. 11. I’m sure Alberts wanted to make at least halfway through the season before having to assess Frost but I can’t imagine what he’s thinking on that plane now but if I had to guess he’s coming up with a list of guys to throw $10 million a year at.

  21. What about going for coach with no head coaching experience? It seems to work out MUCH better for us. Couldn't be much worse than our current coach who was a consensus home run, perfect fit and destined for great things hire. Looking at our last 6 HC hires. Every coach we've hired with previous HC experience has been an unmitigated disaster. Every coach we've hired without HC experience has been successful. Coaches with previous HC experience. 61-71 - 46.2% Callahan 27-22 Riley 19-19 Frost 15-30 Coaches without previous HC experience. 380-95-3 - 79.5% Osborne 255-49-3 Solich 58-19 Pelini 67-27

  22. I'm starting to feel like we don't have the horses to get it done up front to begin with. It also looked that group has some S & C issues because I can think of 3 plays off the top of my head where they actually created open running lanes and weren't physically getting stonewalled or getting pushed backward/twisted around. Sad thing is I'm not even talking about the piss poor pass protection. Prochazka looked gassed yesterday as well and he wasn't the only linemen who looked that way.

  23. He'll probably start next week and we won't see any of the players that played this week judging from the past RB rotations. Maybe there is a method to the madness but I've never been able to figure it out since the rotation seems random.

  24. Few things There was no PI on a deep ball from Thompson to the endzone, and the WR (Trey?) had his right arm pulled down by the DB. Obvious PI, but No call. Otherwise, it's 6 right there. Another deep ball from Casey to Trey that should have connected but didn't - Because Trey was not running full speed, and the NW Safety grabbed his jersey. Incomplete, possible flag, but mostly on Trey Palmer (and I do believe he got some bench time after this). The drops. Alligator arms or hands clapping on 5-6 throws by Thompson that were catchable, even though some passes wobbled or above the face mask (reach for it). Trey Palmer (3 times), Boerkircher, Oliver Martin, Wyatt Liewer.... I mean, you have sticky gloves on and you boast about making plays, so make a damn catch. Be a dawg and help CT and the offense out. Brody Belt saw a bit of action and he got it done. Marcus Wash, Vokolek, Alante and Castaneda took care of buisness. Those other guys choked making plays they've seen all spring, summer and fall. Couldn't catch it on the big stage. Mickey needs to get after the guys and the depth. Or play guys that will get it done.

  25. This might not be popular but I feel like Trev should be on the hot seat too. I do believe he was in a horrible spot last year because of Frost being a legend...because we still have fans that are scared of Bo...but Trev was hired to make big boy moves.

  26. Bielima is a better coach than Frost. So is Schiano......I thought Frost would have been let go last year. I hoped/thought we'd be better in game 1 year 5......Not so much.

  27. That alone should have sent him packing after 2021.....But he is Frost so he got a pass. Not a winning record agains any opponent in the West. We are potentially the worst team in the B1G.

  30. They got 2 year contracts, so no matter what happens they are getting paid. Whipple wasn't going back to Pitt. He was on his way to retiring and we threw him almost $2M. Of course he decided to join for one last adventure. I'm guessing Mickey had other options, but the allure of coming back was too good to pass up. There probably is part of him that thinks he might be able to parlay being an assistant here to the HC gig.

  31. Whip didn't like Narduzzi, Nebraska offered more money, Micky was let go at LSU and is being paid well to be here. Both signed 2 year contracts. They getting paid either way next year. Neither will be a head coach here.

  32. So everyone should ignore the last five years of the same crap????? This isn't a one game sample size of frustration for some of us. And the kids are young men and know this is a business. Hell maybe some will pick up their level of play because they heard their coach needs fired. Not likely since it hasn't happened the last couple of years. Weak take

  34. True, probably a couple pile jumps in there as well. My thing is the leadership of play by three of your chosen captains. I mean two are the most undisciplined EDGE protectors ever. The other had a game that could make Corey McKeon jealous. Tannor and Nelson have been responsible for huge plays the last couple of years by looking to go make a big hit by eschewing their responsibilities as an edge setter and in pass coverage. Play your role within the defense and maybe with their athleticism the faint hope of the defense turning around is there. But given the track record of these two "captains" say otherwise

  35. Urb reunited with Tom Herman at OC Urb wants to prove he's still the big swinging dong of college coaching. He'd get any recruit here, as mentioned other places NIL deals wipe out any "non recruiting hot bed arguements" these days. Second, he would NEVER surround himself with a JV staff, so if any "health issues" sprout up, there is a track record of coaching tree awesomeness that could easily take control of the train successfully(like the OC mentioned above). Thirdly, he is very cognizant and respectful of the history and tradition of NU so that is an allure he could be drawn to. "Wake the sleeping giant from a couple decades of hibernation" is a challenge his ego probably needs to fulfill. Finally those that are scared of the "embarassing" past transgression of his, I present the last five years of a s#!tshow as Exhibit A.

  36. Army and Air Force win 9+ games every year with it. They don't really recruit. Navy has a couple 11 win seasons recently. Why does everyone think any coach (outside of Urban Meyer) in Lincoln would get kids to come here instead of Columbus, Ann Arbor, or Madison? Ohio State beats us for recruits 9 times out of 10, and it shows on Saturdays. We will NEVER out-recruit, out-spread, out-pass, or be more athletic than them. We need to be different and unique. Hard to prepare for. Right now we don't look much different than most of the B1G. We wouldn't have to worry about wasting recruiting time going against the rest of the B1G for 4/5 star QBs and WR, and we could focus on building a legitimate defense that doesn't give up 550 yards to Northwestern.

  37. I’m too lazy to go back and look, but that team that didn’t win a game was in the Orange/Fiesta bowl two years earlier. The winless to undefeated story is still pretty impressive, but there’s details that are left out. It wasn’t a program build.

  38. First of all, he did not win a national championship, that's just silly. Second, he had one great season in a conference that plays no defense, and allows you to recover from questionable decisions like that on side kick because of extra possessions. The big ten is the complete opposite of the AAC. Defense everywhere, few possessions and a poor decision like that costs you the win. He also had a vastly superior talent advantage to his opponents that year, outside of Auburn. It was lightning in a bottle. Frost has shown who he is, a losing HC. He isn't some awesome proven commodity based on one year where the stars aligned, he's got 5 losing seasons in 6 years as coach. That's who he is. Saying "a national championship coach can't win here!" is disingenuous. A lot of people could be solid here, if they embrace what the conference is. People make fun of Iowa/Minny/NW/Wisky style of play but that is what wins games. We will never be Ohio State which is what Frost wants to be.

  39. In my opinion, there are two options: 1) be willing to shell out top dollar (similar to what guys like Saban, Chip Kelly, Dabo, Day make) for a top coach; or 2) hire a guy like Chadwell or Calhoun who runs an option-style offense, making the Nebraska brand unique again. There is no 3rd option where you just hire some middle-of-the-road guy for a cheap price and hope it works out.

  40. You hire assistant coaches and you let them do their jobs. Since Frost made the call for the onside kick, that tells me all I need to know. He is a control freak. I have been 100% behind him until yesterday. You hire a ST coach to avoid crap like that. Sorry, he has to go.

  41. I'd be curious on Wynn's takes with this team. He came from the premier program in the country. Culture, chemistry, talent of the position coaches. I'd buy him a very nice meal to pick his mind on the dichotomy he sees between the two programs on those fronts.

  42. How does Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota and even Purdue win 9 games or more? Not by making a decision like that, for sure.

  43. Grant makes an incredible run for a long TD. Our team celebrates, and we are up by 2 scores. Momentum is swung into our favor. 28-17 All the pressure is now on Northwestern. Who on earth thinks you need a trick play on a kickoff after that - as the best decision for the team? Onside kick success rate is less than 20% at best, and usually closer to 10%. Northwestern got the ball and regained momentum from it. Scored from a short field rather easily. 28-24 You literally took the pressure off Northwestern with that decision. The moment did not call for onside kick Attempt. I'm sorry, but that was the Dumbest decision that I ever saw. Immediately I thought...."No wonder. Here we go again"
