Agent has a lackluster client in need of a boost. Agent has their (unpaid) interns post anonymously on message boards and the twitter saying his client would be a good fit for job X. Agent gets a blogger to blog some bloggy stuff about how people are talking about coach Y for job X. Local and national beat writers, who are contractually obligated to produce a Top 5/7/10 list of targets for each job opening, cite the blogger citing the interns. Now that the agent has attention for his client as a Candidate, he can negotiate a higher salary at their current stop or at whatever new school ends up desperate enough to hire him. It's a seamless, bulletproof method of promotion.8 points

This just in: Nebraska hasn't been beating most of the teams they beat on paper, for years now. That they did so this week, with a whole new DC and an Interim Head Coach given the freedom to make needed changes, is NOT as insignificant as you are trying to make it, Debbie Downer.6 points

Just a few from a quick search session: Will Healey went from FCS Austin Peay to FBS Charlotte and has gone 7-6, 2-4, 5-7, and 1-5 so far this year. Mike Houston had massive success in DII and FCS and has gone 4-8, 3-6, 7-5, and 3-2 at East Carolina. Hal Mumme went from Valdosta State to Kentucky and ended with a 20-26 record in the 90s. Then he did it again going from Southeastern Louisiana to New Mexico State where he went 11-38. Dino Babers has had middling success at Bowling Green and then Syracuse. Same with Willie Fritz. Everett Withers, Mike London, Rich Ellerson, Bobby Johnson are some others4 points

I’m starting not to think about other coaches. There’s something inherit-ably likable about the three misfits in charge. the gratitude and selflessness is refreshing. And if Trev walks in one day and relieves them of their duties, not one of them will have regrets.3 points

Because he doesn't get those gaping holes, Grant is tremendous at being patient and shifty to get yards. Might be my favorite back that I enjoy watching in a long time. He runs different, not sure how I would explain it. With all due respect to Rex and Ameer, it almost seems like he runs with a little bit of both of their hardness, vision and determination. Whatever Grant has been doing, it has been a breath of fresh air. Love it.3 points

Yeah, Scott proved to be a massive disappointment and his early season firing was totally defensible, but let's not go down the road of second-guessing his resume when we hired him, cause that doesn't help us at all right now. Frost actually came up the coaching ranks as a linebackers coach and then co-defensive coordinator in the fairly competitive Missouri Valley conference, where his team led the conference in defense. That's enough to get him promoted to perhaps the premier college program at the time, where he's in charge of the receivers in Chip Kelly's innovative offense, and then goes on to call the shots as OC for three years after Kelly leaves, and Oregon hardly misses a beat. (Neither Chip Kelly nor Mark Helfrich fared as well.) Frost's supposedly pass-happy speed & finesse offense also boasted the 9th best rushing offense in the nation. At this point Scott's football mentors are Bill Walsh, Bill Parcells, Chip Kelly and Tom Osborne. He's a Broyles finalist as one of the top assistant coaches in the country and he's at least making the list of most next level HC searches. UCF, a good program with higher expectations nabs Frost to turnaround their 0-12 team without any HC experience, and two seasons later Scott delivers a 13-0 season, a bowl victory against an SEC powerhouse, and a #6 ranking. In 2017, Scott Frost is on every team's short list, including hard lobbying from Florida and Tennessee, who both have the resources and expectations to make the splashiest hire. Scott goes with his heart and the rest is history. Florida and Tennessee hire coaches with other resumes and more chapters, but fire them faster than we fired Frost. One chapter? Hardly. There's a good chance Nebraska will hire a coach with a resume similar to or lesser than Scott Frost's in 2017 and we will justify it without even thinking how it compares to Scott Frost's resume because humans and circumstances are loaded with variables and there is no sure thing. I'm going preface what I'm about to say with I never thought up until now that Mickey was a serious candidate for HC. But I'm going to do a 180 and say that I think he is VERY much being considered. Trev and Mickey played together so they go way back. In my opinion Mickey was hired by Trev, not Scott. If you put the puzzle pieces together it's easy to believe that Mickey ending up here when he did is more than a coincidence. He didn't leave the comfort of his home state, which is full of talent for the position that he coached for a tiny pay raise. He came here with the intention of being the next HC.3 points

ESPN's FPI rankings have Indiana at #79 and Georgia Southern at #87. How meaningful are the rankings? Not extremely meaningful, but they're at least something we can go off of. So yeah I'm going to say Indiana is a relatively bad team, but this is the point for me: They're roughly where Georgia Southern is at & run very similar offensive schemes. We played them both at night at home. Georgia Southern embarrassed our defense because our defensive coordinator was pretty much just a coffin stuffer. They put up 45 points on us and beat us 45-42 in a game where our offense actually played well. Then against Indiana we made only minor personnel changes but huge scheme changes (playing more aggressively with linebackers to attack the QB, playing man coverage) and then we hold their offense to 14 points. So the takeaways shouldn't be as much about whether it was a good win; all wins are good wins. The takeaway is how desperately our team needed better coaching to come anywhere close to playing to its potential.3 points

Maybe just blame it on nature being nature as hurricanes tend to happen and FL tends to be a landfall state3 points

You know, it just hit me. A lot of GOP supporters are old testament people. Maybe all the Desantis supporters will drop him now that God has taken his wrath out on Florida for the inhumane actions of their governor. Naahhh... who am I kidding, they'll probably blame it on fornicators, furries, and the LGBT people.3 points

I don't get the hang up on trying to categorize this as a bad win. Isn't it better to win than to lose and then be fed a line of bulls#!t about being "this close"? Oh, that's right, it's okay to lose to the likes of Indiana when you're the golden boy.3 points

Well worth the 16 minutes to watch Mickey. I haven't bothered to watch the press conferences in years but he has changed that. Responds to the questions with short, succinct, honest answers and doesn't pull any punches. He tells like it is. Certainly easy to see why he is such a great recruiter. If I were the parent of a kid considering NU and Mickey was in the living room I'd have no reservations at all about sending the kid off for 4-5 under his guidance.3 points

IF Joseph gets the HC gig, I believe he will look for the best OC he can find and Whip would get moved to analyst if he wanted to stay around. The only way Whip would stay on as OC is if Joseph couldn't find a quality OC to take his place. If NU will open up the checkbook then I dont see that being a problem2 points

No. You're wrong. Seriously. Please re-read the post and pretty much everything written by non-Husker college football observers at the time of Frost's 2017 hiring. Scott Frost was judged by some of the most prestigious college football programs and observers, who didn't imagine what they wanted to see and had no scarlet-colored glasses. Frost's resume was pretty much everything you wanted in a hot (and available) HC prospect, and would be the same today under a different name. Wait for Frost to get a few more HC season under his belt, and you'll know more, but you will also have missed the opportunity. Nebraska fans just had the added thrill of knowing he was one of ours, and that gave us the leverage to hire the hottest candidate away from Florida, Tennessee and other top schools reading the same resume. Our expectations were higher and our disappointment deeper for the hometown hero, but this kind of hindsight offers few useful lessons. Why would Nebraska be so cocky to think the Offensive Coordinator at Oregon would prefer to be the Offensive Coordinator at Nebraska, much less leave the team he just led to a #6 national ranking for the demotion?2 points

The vibes I'm getting here is that this staff is really leveraging the fact that they've got nothing to lose. Felt like we played that way on Saturday night, outside of the string of drives in the 3rd quarter on offense that got screwed up by penalties. Go blow Rutgers' doors off.2 points

Thanks! I guess you can see Palmer run into the DB trying to get underneath him. And it definitely looks like he'd be better off going over the top. So that's a fair critisism. It also doesn't surprise me that Joseph would tend to blame his position group instead of a different one.2 points

That is pathetic. The party is pathetic. - The first 5 (after Trump) have all been stained by Trump. Out of that list: Only Cheney, Sasse, and possibly Christie are unstained by Trump or aren't a part of MAGA in some form. Where is Governor Hogan (former Maryland gov)? He should be on that list.2 points

The tough sell to Dykes would be to get him out of Texas. Not saying he wouldn't do well at Nebraska, but his most success has been within the state of Texas, and he's very comfortable there.2 points
