  1. Leipold is out. I really hope it's not Rhule. I'd be happy with Mickey but the real question that I have is what kind of staff would he put together but that's going to be the case with whomever they hire. The assistants. We definitely need to finally majorly majorly upgrade here as well. Please not Rhule. My pick is Joseph. That's all I got!

  2. I was sitting at a bar at a steakhouse Friday night and (admittedly after a couple/few martinis) looked across the bar and swore I saw Urban Meyer. Said to my wife, "Holy s#!t that's Urban Meyer." She looks at him then looks at me and says, "The waiter?" which is when I noticed he was dressed like the waiters. I think we all may need to step away from the coaching search for a little while.

  4. Rhule is confirmed. I had a dream last night. I was talking to TO outside Trev’s office. Just as his secretary let us in Rhule showed up and Trev said we’d have to wait till later because he had a contract to finalize. I asked Rhule if he was the next coach and he said yes. I said I want to hug you and he looked at me like “who’s this weirdo” and walked in and closed the door in my face Actual dream…..I may have been on the board too long last night.

  5. So you wouldn’t be happy to see something like 10-4, 10-3, 11-3 type records in a few years. Noted. I can barely remember the last time this program won 10 or 9 or even 8 games. You go ahead and hold out for whatever guy you think is gonna do better than that.

  6. Just piecing together a ton of stuff, this seems to me to be the scenario that fits the best: Rhule was the #1 choice at least a couple of weeks ago. He was even here at least once, probably twice. The reports of the BoR meeting was not an official meeting but Trev letting them know that he thought he found his guy and running the terms by therm. Trev was trying to get a deal done, but Carolina threw a fit. My guess is it was in the $6-7M range and they wanted it to be basically the whole $10M or they weren’t going to let it fly. Trev didn’t feel he should go any higher so that’s when the reports came out that he turned us down. And that story morphed into the low-ball offer reports and not wanting to pay assistants. And Trev started to move on to his next choices. And that led to Trev’s comments about being good stewards of the resources he had. But then a couple of the big-money boosters stepped in and said if that’s really who Trev wanted, we needed to pay what it took to get him here. So they ponied up some extra cash - or pledged to contribute to something else - and that got us back in the picture. The $9.2-ish million was enough to make Carolina happy and now we’re set for an announcement Saturday or Sunday with a press conference Sunday or Monday. And once we had Rhule on the hook the other guys we had lined up as next choices - Liepold, DeBoer, etc. - signed the extensions that they had been offered when their schools found out they were looking around.

  9. Remove his first year at Temple and Baylor and it’s 44-22. Remove his first two years at each of those and it’s 31-10. Both places dumpster fire turnarounds. I doubt I can sway you any as you seem set on another guy where apparently a 2-7 record doesn’t matter. But there is context involved in all of these numbers. I’ll be a happy camper when Rhule is named HC in a few days.

  10. "Black Shirts" have become a weird distraction for several years now, and it's high time they just go away - it's not 1995 anymore. Black Shirts separate the team in an unproductive way; fielding an amazing lights out defense should simply be our standard, and not something to make a big deal out of. Look at Iowa's defense the last several years - one of the best statistically speaking over the last decade, and they just go out and get their business done with zero hype. That's actually a good model for how our D should operate going forward.

  13. If you're going to pay elite money, go get an elite coach. Giving Rhule all that money right after Carolina famously made the same mistake is not being a good steward of the resources at Nebraska.

  14. The last few days all everyone has been talking about is how Trev is "supposedly" being a cheapskate and now that it looks like he is stepping up to the plate to pay for the coach he wants it is spending too much? Always got to be something to complain about I guess.

  15. We paid that much extra to fire a guy 2 weeks early. I’d say there isn’t much difference at all if that’s what it takes to get the guy you want. It’s basically Monopoly money.

  24. Does the next HC have to care about Nebraska?.....NO. If we hire a coach who is already rich and just wants to win to feed their ego and get launched back into the NFL, he will win games and plenty of them. It's more about the career for the truely professional coaches. Come here and lose like Frost and your career is over. If Rhule comes here and wins double digits for 2 years after a mulligan first year and leaves for the NFL, we will be the better for it and will be a much more attractive destination for we will not be a complete rebuild for the next HC. We need a coach that can get us back into being relevant.

  27. Luke Fickells Entrance on Saturday Morning

  28. I am well documented about wanting Fickell. He has been my guy all along. But in terms of comparison, I believe Fickell has had 3 seasons with 10 or more wins, which is exactly what Rhule has…. and Rhule would probably have more if he didn’t jump to the NFL. They are very comparable. If you are willing to pay Fickell, Rhule can’t be far behind. With that said, I am on your side wanting LF.

  34. Stop making it an honor. You cannot create a team environment when special (visible) status is given to certain players. Everyone on the Husker D is a blackshirt. Everyone on the Husker D wears a blackshirt in practice, just how it was when it all started. I do say we need to get rid of the skull and bones. We are a collegiate football team, not a biker gang.

  35. If it was Meyer (I'm 99.9% certain it's not, but if it was) he's been doing college football broadcasting this entire season. It's perfectly logical he would not want to announce it and then make it a talking point all season long on broadcast, even in this last week. In regards to Rhule, his contract with Carolina has made things complicated. Sounds like that may have been a major sticking point in negotiations. But that's all subsidiary to the likelihood that Trev and the administration didn't want to take away from the players' season by formally focusing all of the attention on the next head coach. These kids have already been through an unfortunate ringer no player should have to go through, and Trev made it a point when he fired Frost to say he thought changing the coach would give them a better chance to make something of their season... hearing a new voice and message. It would be hypocritical to then announce a new head coach and take that all away from them.
