  1. Michigan only gains 9 total yards in the first quarter. Minnesota draws first blood with a TD pass to start the second. Wooo!
  2. Yeah he's fuggin terrible!!! How bout now? Well, I'd say Nelson got thrown to the wolves and he's thriving. And did you see the major league catch Gray made playing WR against Purdue?
  3. Looking good...for now. No way they beat Syracuse, they have a lot of people back from an average team last year including nassib, one of the better big east qbs Hey mister "no way they beat Syracuse," we got to 5 wins today with 4 left. I'm not bragging, because I know what my team is, but I'm encouraged. Six or more is to be expected now.
  4. That's the University of Minnesota - Crookston, an agricultural campus about 200 miles northwest of the Twin Cities. Student volunteers painted the 'M' on the field before the numbers were added, and they evidently counted the wrong number of lines before starting to paint.
  5. Things are looking pretty good for my Gophers tonight. We sold out, we're 4-0 with a lousy Iowa team coming up. We won't overlook the hogeyes, though. The coolest traveling trophy in college football is in play! http://wwwsportnamic...of-rosedale.jpg
  6. Dave Winfield was one of the best ever to play anywhere - he was Bo Jackson before Bo Jackson. Of course we also had Bronko Nagurski, Paul Giel, and many other stellar athletes. Someday when you have a week to kill I'll tell you about it.
  7. Selling those tickets is getting easier and easier...3-0 with a couple of winnable games (Syracuse and Iowa) coming up, the student section is getting filled - the Gophers are no longer struggling to sell tickets.
  8. Hey, the stadium was nearly full, the student section was packed and loud, my team won a game decisively for a change...things are looking up. What's that? The Huskers lost? The Big Ten sucks? This might be our year!
  9. Get 'em in the stadium to see a win and to rub shoulders with season ticket holders, and maybe they'll come back next week. Seems reasonable, but it's embarrassing that we have to resort to that. Our hockey team is more popular right now than our football team.
  10. What we have in the cupboard are a true sophomore and a couple of true freshman who are all better throwers than Gray. In particular, we have fr. Philip Nelson, who I wouldn't want to throw to the wolves this year - wouldn't be productive. Anyway, Gray is a big, strong, fast dude who can make the throws about half of the time. He'll definitely have better games than this one, like he did last year against Michigan State (19/32 for 295 yds and 3 TDs). But he's streaky.
  11. We're excited about what we have in the cupboard, but thanks for thinking of us.
  12. Now think this through. Last year the Gophers lost to New Mexico State of the WAC in a non-conference game, then later they beat Iowa and Illinois. This year they beat UNLV of the MWC in a non-conference game, so can a Big Ten title be far off?
  13. Minnesota back on top. Hopefully the Gophers hang in there, we can call a win a win, and try to look more elegant next week.
  14. Ski-U-Mah (pronounced sky-you-ma) is a slogan used at the University of Minnesota since 1894... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ski-U-Mah_(slogan)
  15. I think it's a little early to say Gray is horrible. He'll come around.
  16. Come on, what are you jealous of? You aren't afraid of little brother, so give some credit. It's pretty cool.
  17. The Gophers beat Illinois and Iowa last year and you're predicting they lose to those two teams and everybody else in the B1G this year. So you think they're getting worse? Neutral observers from the Big Ten Network don't agree. I'd settle for 3 wins OOC and 2-3 wins in conference, which means 5 or 6. I think the big jump to contention is still a year or two away, but if you look at coach Kill's record, it's coming. It's always been in year 2 or 3 of his tenure, wherever he has coached. The problem I always have with this argument that we will be better here and here so we will win more games is that it assumes that all the other teams on your schedule will stay the same with no improvement either.... Or maybe you're just assuming that I'm assuming that. I know that every team changes every year. I don't think Illinois is better this year; I think with new coaches and a so-so recruiting class they're no better than the team that Minnesota dominated last year. Look at the attrition in Iowa. Graduation, injuries, felonies, etc. They aren't on the upswing.
  18. Under protest, because nobody here is a prophet. Speaking in general terms I'd predict 5 or 6 wins, with 4 being disappointing and 7 being greater-than-expected progress. August 30 - at UNLV - WIN Sept 8 - New Hampshire at home - WIN Sept 15 - Western Michigan at home - LOSE Sept 22 - Syracuse at home - WIN Sept 29 - at Iowa - LOSE Oct 13 - Northwestern at home - WIN Oct 20 - at Wisconsin - LOSE Oct 27 - Purdue at home - LOSE Nov 3 - Michigan at home - LOSE Nov 10 - at Illinois - WIN Nov 17 - at Nebraska - LOSE Nov 24 - Michigan State at home - LOSE That gets me to 5 wins. I think I'm being conservative here.
  19. You keep changing the discussion. I'm not arguing for a specific win total. It's just plausible that a team could be markedly improved (as the Gophers are this year) and their win total would increase instead of staying at 3. I'm surprised that you think all my team's improvement will result in no more than a stagnant won-lost record. The Gophers should absolutely improve their record from last year. They should at least equal last year's wins before conference play begins, and there'll be at least three games they have an oddsmaker's (not a coach's) chance to notch more wins: Iowa, Illinois, and Northwestern. If you want to haggle over win totals, I'll give you the satisfaction. Your point about Northwestern is well-taken: they're a bowl team every year. But the Gophers don't have to play any year's team except 2012's, and Northwestern is mediocre this year. And Minnesota has gone 4-0 against Illinois and Iowa the last two years. Tallying a win in at least one of those three games is likely. I see improving our record over last year as a probability, not a hope.
  20. I don't think I've been vague here. You want specifics, read my first post in this thread - the second from the top. The Gophers have talent equal to Illinois' or Northwestern's, and nearly equal to Iowa's - I'll take this opportunity to remind you that our boys have beaten Iowa the last two years with inferior talent. More power to ya for beating Iowa twice in a row. I don't have a dog in the fight. But who is picking Minny to beat Iowa in Kinnick? No one so you can't blame me for doing so. Also they have a Senior Qb. I mistakenly said he was a Junior. How can you really say that Minny has better talent than Northwestern? Northwestern is a consistent bowl team. And as for Illinois you can say that Zooker can't be a HC but he recruited serious talent(at times the second best in the Big Ten). I wrote my post more carefully than you read it. I said we have equal talent to Illinois and Northwestern. Listen, I'm not predicting seven or eight wins. I'm just pointing out that my team is better than it was last year, while you're predicting we'll lose to teams that we beat last year and end up with the same record.

  22. What do you think I mean by neutral observers? The Big Ten Network had its team of analysts traveling to fall camps and reporting on what they see. They say Minnesota is far improved over last year. Gerry DiNardo says they've been improved each time they've visited campus for the last two years. This isn't top-secret stuff and I'm not speaking in code. I shared a link earlier in this thread and I'll share it again: http://btn.com/2012/08/12/dinardo-minnesota-practice-tweets/
