We've fallen way below what expectations were even just seven years ago, let alone 25...

this is 100% correct - it just feels like we are at the bottom of the canyon with some new climbing gear and headed back up to a spot we can at least see the horizon and then make a plan to climb the mountain.

I think that applies to the offensive line especially. Last year we lost three starters - the last of Bo's OL recruits, leaving us with mostly Riley linemen. The new guys were, uhh, not ready. But O-lines take the longest to develop and gel as a unit, so even with largely the same players, we could see a lot of improvement vs a year ago.

agree totally - Miles had a great end to the season, however OL deserves a chunk of that credit.

One thing I am curious about is special teams. How will our new kicker fare? New punter?

We also have a new person returning punts and we definitely need a threat to take kickoffs. Brody Belt is an amazing player, but he is not beating anyone to the house in the B1G. I am wondering what this new special teams coordinator will do to help us on that end of things. I know he can't have  a headset so who does he communicate to for the plays on ST?

Another thing I am slightly concerned about is our corners are smaller. Braxton Clark was our guy to take on the opposing teams #1 bigger receivers since he was around 6'3. Now, Myles Farmer is 6'2 and a NB, so will he be expected to take on those bigger receivers? I have no doubt Bootle and CTB can cover, but it will be interesting to see how they do against these bigger receivers. Especially trying to get off blocks and make plays on screens etc.

Finally, how good will our receivers be with or without Manning? It seems the blocking should be improving so the screens should work. However, OSU will be expecting those so can we beat them deep with Betts, Brown, or Wandale to get their DBs guessing is an important question. I wonder if Houston or Nance can also see the field some after being in the system for a year. I could go on about some other questions but tomorrow will answer a lot of these win or lose.

I think his work is done 100% between sunday and friday.  When saturday gets here we probably have a game plan and the players just need to execute.  Now i'm sure there is a certain coach in charge of the unit during the game to make minor adjustments if a wrinkle is found or needed.

One thing that sort of sticks out to me is that there aren't that many true juniors from Frost's first class expected to make big impacts this season outside of Martinez.

People have basically written off Caleb Tannor (I'm not in that camp), and then in terms of offensive linemen, the better ones didn't start coming in until the 2019 class.

It's too bad that there isn't at least one WR that could have been recruited in 2018 that was expected to make a big impact this season. I think this is why the people that said after the Ohio State game last year that this was a four year total time-to-fix were right; the guys from the 2019  & 2020 classes will need to grow and make big impacts to really turn this team around.

Yes first class was mostly a bust - Scott and company have stated many times that their goal was to over recruit the class before so that the guys had to work hard to keep their rank on the team and it is pretty evident that the first class was a notch down.  With that said we will probably see a couple slow bloomers that surprise us this year and next.

Ok, the Rose Bowl appearance against Miami was 19 seasons ago, so that's a technicality.  It's still in-line with the overall message of the program declining over the past 20 years.

Agree the program is on a decline that needs to change soon - as i stated.  Technicality - LOL.  That's like a statistician leaving out a group of data to get the "right" answer.  Either way we both agree with nearly everybody on this board that the level needs to climb a couple steps and hopefully more like 4 or 5 steps.....

I get what you are saying, but National Championships isn't the only measure.  If you look at conference championships and appearances in major bowl games in the past 20 years, NU is one of a few Power 5 conference teams that have failed to win a conference/appear in a major bowl game.  There have been a few years where NU has been close, only to fail, and then fall back down to being average.

NU has fallen way below what fans, players and coaches have expected over the past twenty years.  And high bowls and conference championships on a steady basis may be a better indicator then National Championships (this is easier to say now that we have 5 - for a team that has 0 it would probably be the other way around) but we have played in a top bowl in the past 20 years so luckily we can't be lumped into the "few power 5 conference teams that have failed......

Some facts and figures from an Ohio State game preview:

    • Based on available records, 2020 is believed to be the first time Nebraska returns its entire starting offensive line since two-platoon systems were first allowed under NCAA rules in 1964.
    • Nebraska is the only team in the country who had the same starting offensive line (by player and position) for every game during the 2019 season and returned all five of those starters.
    • More than two-thirds of the Husker roster is underclassmen, as 109 of the 154 players are either freshmen or sophomores (71 percent).
    • Nebraska has 79 freshmen on its roster, more than the sophomore, junior and senior classes combined. Fifty-one percent of NU’s roster is freshmen, the second straight season freshmen have made up more than half of the roster.

Hope this year goes well. however if we show small signs of growth - the above should lead to success in future years.

Sure.  But I have an easier time hanging my hopes on him as a big JUCO transfer rated as a four star than an undersized two star walk-on and a bunch of freshmen that have never seen a single snap in a college football game.

....sure glad that second description was just a hypothetical. :)

I'm not worried about whether we have DL talent. DL development on the other hand...

It serms that a combination of DL Talent and DL Development got 3 guys to the league last year.  Unless you want to give ice cream man all the credit for developing them.

Not one score for OSU over 50?  That surprises me a bit.

Unless NU can run the ball well and play fast but still hold on to the rock and chew clock, I just don't see how OSU will not be scoring a lot.

OSU will probably put up crazy yards. Part of this will be their talent and part the NU def will play super agressive. This could lead to 2+ turnovers.

We could see 550+ yards and 2+ turnovers causing the the total points to be 35/40ish

Evidently I am in the minority, but I have never gone to a bar to watch a Husker game. I either watch in person for home games, have/attend a watch party at someone's house, or watch at home. Way cheaper booze, and better munchies.

And, btw, I do drink (sometimes too much) but have never understood the draw of overpaying for drinks and having others talk/yell/shout over any conversation I am trying to have.

Guessing you haven't had the pleasure of watching a game with two or more wives that say we should get together for a game and then after the first kickoff forget there is a game for the next 3+ hours :(

I want to start a petition to never have Wan'Dale run the ball again.  That means we have no more functional RB left and that is a great way to get him hurt.

Part of the advantage of SF offense is to have guys that can do 2 or 3 things in the same series - if offense doesn't sub defense won't have time to.  If defense has a pass defense on the field the advantage to move an extra WR to TE and another WR to RB would be a nice run advantage.

So Frost hasn't been accomplishing ANYTHING the past two offseasons with the team to make you think we might be better?.....

Why do you think Frost redshirts every player possible?

Cam Jurgens doesn't look the part physically of an offensive lineman compared to when Frost arrived?

A year's maturity in the weight room and with the playbook hasn't helped Luke McCaffrey immensely?

Same could be said for Bryce Bemhart, or Keem Green, or......

Give Frost some damn credit that he is making this team more physically ready for a DI season.

Hell, the last time we were potentially this physically ready to compete was under Osborne

Agree completely on all areas.  The Frost pressers looks like he has some confidence and the bodies of some of the big boys look like they want to proof something.  Now things may not go our way early in the season.... or maybe they will.  But to say that SF hasn't had gains with this team is only looking at the W/L column.

Yup, always demanded everything. Seriously? I was making a joke about players that fans get excited about being hurt or unavailable. Not sure why you felt the need to go after me personally.

It's a joke that gets made every time something doesn't go our way even thou we have plenty of nice things.  i figured if we were just joking i would send one also - sorry if you can't take a joke.
