  1. Throws a nice catchable ball. I thought he ran the option in a game earlier last season and I was thinking "wow, oh yea, that's how it should look!". He didn't outrun the running back, got wrapped up and pitched it perfectly. He seems to have a great sense of timing.
  2. He may not be willing to change his personal demeanor but I get the impression that he has identified areas that need to improve: "I think we're close. I think accountability, discipline and internal leadership - those are the pieces of the puzzle that can push us over the top." After reading this OWH article it seem like he is trying to develop internal leadership: "It's been great," Pelini said. "We (coaches) are limited, but what they choose to do is up to them. It's part of leadership. It's part of an emphasis: Do whatever it takes to get better. To push us over the top." Compton and others have been holding meetings throughout the offseason. http://www.omaha.com/article/20120303/BIGRED/703039839/1048#bo-expecting-a-big-jump-on-defense I think change is coming.
  3. Welcome aboard coach! Love these little guys (emoticons, not the coach).
  4. Unless you get hit under the chin or speared in the side of the helmet you're probably not going to get a concussion form hitting heads on the line. You really dated yourself with the head slap comment, that's been outlawed for a long time. It's probably a better way for someone to get a concussion than "head butting", which is probably a poor choice of words by Cam. I think they are probably being taught to make first contact with the helmet more so than head butt the guy. If you look at any outstanding middle linebacker or D lineman you'll notice that there helmet is scarred up pretty good and it's always from making contact with the other guys helmet. We were always taught that when shading a man to attack the offensive lineman in the V of the neck in the direction we wanted to control. Essentially attack leading with the head up into the armpit just under the chin and your hands on his breast plate inside and outside, once you make contact you basically bench press them to get separation and control, and shuck him when you know where you need to go. The point of leading with the head is to gain more leverage. If you come in lower than your man with your head up you have all your momentum concentrated in that small area and it's much easier to drive up and through him and hopefully knock him off balance so you can have your way with him. So jsneb83 is right it helps to create separation and reestablish the LOS, but I would argue *WARNING SCIENCE AHEAD* that you generate more Power (Power = Work/Time) by engaging with your head and then pressing the defender away because you have increased the amount of Work (Work = Force x Distance) done by increasing the distance over which the Force was applied (Force = Mass x Acceleration). Nerdy I know, but football is all about physics. Maybe not a concussion but I remember this article http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/14/sports/14football.html?_r=1 Quote: The idea that C.T.E. can stem from hits below the level of concussion — which are endemic to football and all but impossible for doctors to see or manage — is relatively new. Ever since C.T.E. in professional football players began making national headlines in early 2007, it has generally been ascribed to mistreated or at least cumulative concussions, for which awareness and education can be an antidote. I haven't seen any recent results from a definitive study. There probably isn't a complete study since only a post-mortem examination of the brain can determine if they suffered from this affliction. Coaching head to head butting may not be wise. What do I know though? Many years since I played, I'd probably be smacking OL heads with my palm. I worry that future studies will show that football is too dangerous to play at all. Not sure what I'd do if I couldn't watch N play each fall. If I recall correctly, Teddy Roosevelt threatened to have football banned unless it could be made safer. Someone should start a thread on this issue. I'd be interested in people's own playing experience, coached techniques and thoughts. My cousin probably suffered some brain damage from football. He got his bell rung during a game and his parents woke to him trying to tackle the refrigerator in the middle of the night. He had no idea what he was doing but reportedly had good tackling form.
  5. I think it comes from the HC. Arrests, bad behavior...whatever. That doesn't mean the program isn't clean, it means the players who are part of it get into trouble. How the coach runs his ship and how he responds to these incidents define how clean the program is. You could hand a principled coach a roster full of thugs who, all they do is get arrested, but it doesn't mean that coach isn't running a clean program. I think the criteria you talk about in the second part is more important. There are always going to be players that do something wrong. It's how the coach and administration handle it. Hopefully they do not feel so much pressure to win that they look the other way. I was talking to an Illini fan the other day and he brought up the gun incident during TO's time. I had completely forgot about it but it made me cringe.
  6. minor in comparison to Nebraska haha... Bizarre. I wonder what these recruits are thinking. These two stories caught my eye today and I remembered this headset incident. http://www.blackshoe...own-quarterback http://sportsillustr...l?sct=cf_t11_a2 If my son wanted to go to TCU or PSU I would say NO!!! I just read those articles. Just wondering why you would say no. I guess I would rather not have my kid go to PSU because of everything that has gone on there, but if he did, I wouldn't have a huge problem with that. I don't want to derail the topic so I'll keep it short. What Sandusky did was horrible but it was one person and I wouldn't hold PSU to blame. What happened in response concerns me: The cover-up by the administration. The delaying of arrests until after JoePa got his all time win record (too much of a coincidence and shows PSU's influence extends beyond the university). More concern by PSU fans to JoePa's firing then children being molested. All of these indicate an environment where bad things were allowed to happen and continues to exist. Too much importance is placed on football at PSU. Most if not all PSU fans are more concerned about who the next coach will be instead of what kind of systemic changes should be made to prevent similar things from happening again. This environment allowed football players to beat up some students and not be disciplined. Want that to be your kid? Nebraskans put a lot of importance on the football team but I hope the reaction to child molestation and coverup would be totally different. I for one would be very vocal advocating that UNL clean house, pass laws or whatever it takes to guarantee something similar couldn't happen again and a change in attitude toward football.
  7. I thought they were scandinavian. Or is that Minnesota? No offense meant. Lot of attractive girls in Wisconsin. Mmmmh breast
  8. I was born in Wisconsin, so I can say this... My only bash against Wisconsin are their really large people. No , not like walkon Offensive lineman material, but too much cheese, brats and beer large. Everytime I go back to visit it is very apparent. Oh yeah, there is also the issue of the trophy cases of Wisconsin missing a certain trophy as well. No...we will not share... Maybe you shouldn't bash family members on some random sports board! Maybe your family will stop inviting you back after these comments! The cheese, brats and beer seem to produce some large chesticles though. Mmmmh breast . Not a slight on Wisconsin women but what is up with the gap in the front teeth? Worked with a girl from Wisconsin and noticed several while attending the game. Is it the brats and cheese causing this or hereditary or is it just my imagination?
  9. You crack me up (damn nuns) and wanted to give you an encouraging reply. For being a rock in high school you put together a thought provoking post and make some good points. Forget the spell checking, keep slinging the words. Post is not a friggin term paper. I don't think it is necessary to schedule a difficult non-conference schedule in this new world of parity. Few teams go undefeated. If we are undefeated and go through the big ten unscathed, it should be enough to end up in the NC/playoff. Look at the final standings this year. 3 B1G teams in top 15. Although they aren't considered "elite", beating them would get us there. Funny how our perception of the big ten changed. There does seem to be a problem in our new conference. I remember Bielama saying that he didn't think they were NC contenders early in the season. Sheesh talk about self fulfilling prophesy. We can help break the B1G out of this Rose Bowl malaise and develop some swagger. Let's stop thinking that there are "elite" teams. Parity is a 2 way street. Our 3 and 4 star recruits can beat the 4 and 5 star recruits of other teams. Rather than be dissapointed in a bowl game at the end of season let's start scheduling them early before hitting the grind of the B1G. If that is what it will take then let's go for it. Maybe not in '12 .... but after getting better acclimated (but not yet assimilated) to our new conference in '13. Let's not settle to be a middle of the pack team hoping to make the rose bowl. Rose bowl this year and NC the next. BELIEVE. GBR!! Getting woozy on my soap box... need more kool-aid.
  10. minor in comparison to Nebraska haha... Bizarre. I wonder what these recruits are thinking. 11. My thoughts too. I asked a coworker who's father is a booster. He said that they just left for better jobs. I even mentioned that I had heard Bielama is a butthead. He hadn't heard anything to that effect or that it caused friction within the coaching staff. I'm wondering where this perception that he is a douchebag comes from. He seems like a decent, well spoken bloke during interviews.
  12. “If we get wind that a booster is employing student-athletes or an agent is too connected we’ll just go and watch foot traffic,” Roe Lach said. “It’s not like we’re out there stalking people. Could be a problem for us.
  13. Kudos to whoever is in charge of the Husker breeding program! I see Mike Sr. was 5' 10". Keep up the good work finding suitable mates!! Anyone have the Banderas measurables for comparison?
  14. i think it was a lot more than that. pretty sure the kid or his coach or both lied about his size and then both ducked NU's calls for a long period of time. i don't recall an injury having anything to do with it. also pretty sure he knew where he stood with us long before signing day. We offer sight unseen? I've never paid attention to recruiting until this year so I don't know. I noticed a lot of offers already for next year but assumed one of the coaches had met them face to face.
  15. Does that analysis also hold for the Huskers? My have our standards dropped... four losses during the Osborne years was a terrible season. When I wrote 3-4 losses I was thinking of the old days and what that would mean for a Nebraska team. 5-7 losses probably makes more sense. My comparison was not based on fan behavior directly but more in the logic that history repeats itself. I'm not completely up on the history of Colorado and Wisconsin but to quote Dr. Tom they are teams enjoying "recent success". I don't remember worrying about losing to Colorado prior to McCartney and as I understand it Wisconsin was not good prior to the arrival of Alvarez. They probably occasionally had good teams but they weren't perennially in the national title hunt. Given the same starting point, I predict Wisconsin will follow the same path. Their fans will play into it indirectly by forcing out a good coach during some down years. While watching the OSU game I got the feeling they really wanted to beat us. I think no matter how bad OSU is they will always bring their best game against Nebraska. I'm sure winning against Nebraska isn't as important as beating Michigan. Different motivation though. They hate Michigan but probably respect our program so beating us means a lot to them. I don't think Texas hated us but they definitely seemed to play unusually good against us. I attended the Michigan game and I got the impression that they expected to beat us and we were more of an annoyance along the way to playing OSU.
  16. I agree with this post. good stuff Good analysis IF we get to beating them often - based on fan behavior only Also correct. Wisconsin = Colorado (without a NC) and I have the proof!!!: _______Wisconsin____________________________Colorado______________ 1990_______1-10______0-8____Alvarez____________________________ 1991_______5-6_______2-6______________1982_______2-8-1___1-5-1__McCartney 1992_______5-6_______3-5______________1983_______4-7_____2-5_______ 1993_______10-1-1____6-1-1____________1984_______1-10____1-6_______ 1994_______7-4-1_____4-3-1____________1985_______7-5_____4-3_______ 1995_______4-5-2_____3-4-1____________1986_______6-6_____6-1_______ 1996_______8-5_______3-5______________1987_______7-4_____4-3_______ 1997_______8-5_______5-3______________1988_______8-4_____4-3_______ 1998_______11-1______7-1______________1989_______11-1____7-0_______ 1999_______10-2______7-1______________1990_______11-1-1__7-0_______ 2000_______9-4_______4-4______________1991_______8-3-1___6-0-1_______ 2001_______5-7_______3-5______________1992_______9-2-1___5-1-1_______ 2002_______8-6_______2-6______________1993_______8-3-1___5-1-1_______ 2003_______7-6_______4-4______________1994_______11-1____6-1_______ 2004_______9-3_______6-2______________1995_______11-2____5-2___Neuheisel 2005_______10-3______5-3______________1996_______10-2____7-1_______ 2006_______12-1______7-1__Bielema_____1997_______0-5_____0-7_______ 2007_______9-4_______5-3______________1998_______4-4_____8-4_______ 2008_______7-6_______3-5______________1999_______5-3_____7-5___Barnett 2009_______10-3______5-3______________2000_______3-8_____3-5_______ 2010_______11-2______7-1______________2001_______10-3____7-1_______ 2011_______11-3______6-2______________2002_______9-5_____7-1_______ ______________________________________2003_______5-7_____3-5_______ ______________________________________2004_______8-5_____4-4_______ ______________________________________2005_______7-5_____5-3_______ ______________________________________2006_______2-10____2-6____Hawkins ______________________________________2007_______6-7_____4-4_______ ______________________________________2008_______5-7_____2-6_______ ______________________________________2009_______3-9_____2-6_______ ______________________________________2010_______5-7_____2-6_______ Based on my analysis, Wisconsin will have a few 4 or 5 loss seasons.... followed by a coaching change.
  17. Joliet calls it a double wing. http://jolietcatholicfootball.com/content.asp?CID=125991 Been around a long time, not used much anymore. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formation_(American_football) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_wing
  18. Bucky, No problem. I figured out long ago that it is better to ignore people like you. My slight on Wisconsin was based on personal observations while attending the game at Madison. I have no problem with people being exuberant for their team. For any other Husker fans that were there, I hope there is no reciprocation toward Wisconsin fans in Lincoln. It's probably better to keep your distance from them unless they exhibit better class then your typical Badger fan. I completely agree that the atmosphere in Lincoln is a lot different than Madison. You should attend a game in Lincoln. Would be educational. Re-shun I was sad that we left the Big XII and the love that the pollsters seemed to give versus the B1G. I was just getting used to the teams. Before each game I already knew their style of play, the players and how well we would match up with them. Usually the score was the only surprise. I didn't know what to expect before each game this year. With 1 year experience we should feel more comfortable. The coaching staff will make the appropriate adjustments on defense and our offense will improve. I don't expect to see the blowout losses again. I'm looking forward to competing with a couple of teams on the all time win list that are in the B1G. I always wondered if Texas had their eye on the list when they played us. Seemed like they always played better against us. We need to raise our level of play to provide many close games/ upsets with Ohio State and Michigan. Its fun hashing over these games with fans of teams that have winning traditions- probably because of their decorum. I had a great conversation at an airport with an tOSU fan shortly after we played them. He wasn't an tOSU grad, a blue collar retiree that was a huge fan and had excellent insight to their program. He clued me in that they could possibly get Urban Meyer as coach. Unfortunately I may be moving out of the midwest before the Ohio State game. Would love to go to the horseshoe for a close, competitive game that we will win. GBR!
  19. As they say in Madison, "If you can't take the heat get the f#*k out of our kitchen...but leave your beer" Not exactly helping the perception there are ya People come to games in Madison for the party, that's well known throughout the country...and at these parties we tend to drink a little and drinking is known to lead to asshatery. If you know this, as most football fans do, still choose to visit Madison and then whine about it I can't really feel bad for you. As far as perception, I don't really care and it doesn't really matter what a few, new-to-the-conference-Husker fans think. Both football teams in the state are widely respected as having some of the best gameday experiences around and that won't change anytime soon. WOW!
  20. I thought it was a bad move initially. There is a difference in people from the midwest compared to people in the plains states. I wondered how Nebraskans would like asshats from Chicago invading Lincoln. Going to Wisconsin game confirmed this. Not so bad at Michigan. I've spent a lot of time in Columbus, OH and southern Indiana for work and generally came away with a good impression of the people. I think we'll enjoy playing Ohio State. When Colorado left I thought it was a good thing for the XII since I didn't hear anything good about their fans.
  21. I thought it was an interesting offense. Do you know what they call it? At first I thought it would be easy to defend against since running plays to the right would start with Ty standing up and pivoting but they mix it up with the double handoffs and play action from same formation.
  22. I'm not sure it was a cupcake game. He rushed for 515 yards in Class 5A state championship against Joliet Catholic. This year's WR commit Jordan Wetercamp (Lombard Montini) had 353 yards receiving in that game and won 70-45. Probably more of a case of lack of defense. http://ihsa.org/SportsActivities/BoysFootball/StateSeriesInformationResults.aspx?url=/data/fb/5box31.htm Funky formations with 2 RBs starting close to the line. Seem to run a lot of different plays from it including PA. The plays looked similar but sometimes they had 2 handoffs.
