  1. We are still in the game and could win it by playing some sound football. In any event, I think Bo has hurt himself a lot- maybe too much.
  2. We effectively do not have a punter. Just someone who kicks the ball for 30 yards or shanks it except when we punt from inside their 50.
  3. Fake punt inside the 20!!!!!??????!!!!!! Bo is feeling the pressure. He much have some knowledge or rumors that his job is really on line this year.
  4. At halftime, Lou Holtz said the that Nebraska football mystique is gone because the defense is no longer dominating and the offensive line is not dominating anymore. He was speaking about the Huskers over the past years not just this game. He is right. Pelini's comment to the reporter was an unfortunate public relations problem- again! I don't know that Pelini will be fired but he is certainly on a short leash now. The kicking game is bad. The defense seems to always give up big yardage on first down and a lot of total yardage frequently to good and bad teams. The players are young and many experienced are hurt. Numerous fumbles and other turnovers. The team seems to have talent but produces mixed results. The issue begs for coaching. The basics need to be taught and enforced. It seems sometimes the coaches are lacking seasoned experience. Bo needs to evaluate the program staring with the coaching staff, scouting, practice and game preparation. We cannot expect national championships every year but we should expect consistent competent football for four full quarters each game- losing to superior teams and not shooting ourselves in the foot. I want Bo to succeed and then we succeed too I don't want to see a revolving door of new coaches in Lincoln. It just increases the chances of getting another very expensive Callahan again.
  5. I think Bo will be back. Besides, Carl needs someone to hire him again.
  6. IMO, the article did not say much except that Pelini and the fans are disappointed. Resounding Duh!!!!! What do we do about it is the main question. I am not asking for Pelini to be fired but I do want to know what is being done to cure our problems. We have persistent problems of the same issues for some years now. What is being done about fumbles? recruit better hands, spray their hands with Gorilla Glue, make the ball carriers run the gauntlet drill every practice, make the fumbler carry a football all day until the next game, ????? All I hear is that we need to execute better. Pelini has got the defense playing much better for the last few games. But if we have the answer now, why has the defense been so inconsistent all season this year and some past years? Why does our defense often tackle shoulder high and basically standing vertical (little leverage) when taking on a running back with one or more lineman pushing the stack. We usually give far too many yards after contact. What is it that Urban Meyer and Saban do differently that makes them championship contenders at successive head coach jobs? Is it the coach, his staff, recruiting, or other? If we knew the formula, Bo should be able to copy the program just like many others studied Osborne's methods.
  7. I saw Bob Brown play in Lincoln. There is no way Remmington is better.
  8. I think Ron Kellogg and Jordan Westerfkamp just saved Bo's job for this week at least. He is still has one foot on the bricks though. You can't play this poorly for two weeks in a row against the two bottom dwellers in the Division and expect to stay with the big guys to come on the schedule.
  9. Scott Frost has roots in Tom Osborne's hey day- the Husker culture, traditions and championships, etc. He has coaching experience in the pros and college. Both of his parents were Huskers and both coached high school football. He has seen football from many angles and observed a few great coaches work at it. True, he has not been a head coach but all great head coaches had a first year as a head coach.. He has the background, talent and knowledge. He has shown leadership on the field. Just need to know if he provide the leadership required on the sideline and in the field house. His other hurdle would be getting great assistants. If you only want a proven head coach, could we afford to pay the money required to get Urban Meyer to leave Ohio State. I also think there some great head coaches, successful at one job, moved on to another coaching job or league and did not so well. Its a mix of traits, experience, and assistants to make it work. Something needs to change in Lincoln- I don't think Bo needs to be fired. However, if he fired, Scott Frost would be a good choice in my opinion.
  10. I read the article and AD Pat Chun's words indicate that Carl Pelini used marijuana instead of just being in the room when someone else used it. I would think that would disqualify Carl from returning to the Huskers. "Athletic director Pat Chun said Pelini and Rekstis tendered their resignations after he confronted both coaches with reports relating to their use of illegal drugs."
  11. I don't know much about specific football coaches so I won't say he needs to be replaced now. But, there must be some changes in Lincoln. He is in his sixth year with his selected coaches and all his own players now. For most of his tenure, we have suffered humiliating losses amid some good games. Many of those losses were due a total breakdown of the defence. You can't continue to do things the same way and expect completely different results. So far, Bo has not demonstrated publicly any knowledge of the problem and what to do about it. His usual comment is about not executing, not tackling, missing assignments. His comments and demeanor on TV do not give me an confidence now. Some changes are needed; new defense scheme, teach more or different fundamentals, more full speed contact scrimmages, change assistant coaches or a new head coach. Player quality is always offered up as an excuse but I don't feel our players are that bad. We have defensive players over running holes, missing tackles, making contact at or behind the line of scrimmage, and giving up too many yards after contact. Does anyone remember when we expected the Blackshirts to make the stop on 3rd and short most of the time? We should be getting more from the players we have. I remember Bill Jennings saying we did not have the talent but Bob Devaney turned the program around the next year with a winning season and bowl game-- with the same players. I don't want Bo fired but we cannot continue down the same road we are on right now. I supported Bo's hiring fully but I was concerned with is assistant coach hirings. In my opinion, they lacked experience. I think Bo is where Frank Solich was near the end of his Husker coaching tenure. He needs to make some changes in the way things are done before Harvey and Shawn find someone else to do it.
  12. Offensive line is playing well this year but we have not had very hard games yet. My comment about the offensive line reflects my feeling that we used to be considered to be Lineman University- the road grader days. The problems started with the offensive line in the late 90's in my opinion. We have had some great individual players since then but I don't think we have fielded a a dominating blacking line from tackle to tackle since then. I don't track stats- just my feeling afer we had floundered against some Top 25 caliber teams over the years.
  13. Strengths: Defensive backs, running backs and kickers. Weaknesses: Offensive line, linebackers, defensive line and second half adjustments.
  14. I think the targeting rules should be eliminated and stick with unnecessary roughness and spearing. The referees should be basing their calls on their judgement that the intent was to hurt someone. SJB's hit looked to me to a good hit. Defenders have to have the option to knock the ball loose. When two people are moving full speed into one another, the chances of helmets making contact with the other player and his helmet are high. If one flinches or tightens up, the head could come down and make contact. I saw later in a game where a runner used a straght arm to the defender's helmet- no call and the announcer made a favorable comment on the runner. I have seen other calls that are questionable. The referees seem to be heading to a zero tolerance attitude that, in my opinion, does not serve the interests of football. Football is a contact sport and that is why the players were pads and helmets. You can't guaranatee no injuries but you can identify thugs who are tryinlg to hurt someone.
  15. I am not sure that recruiting is the only answer. You can't get 4 or 5 Suh's every year. You have to work with you have and do the best. I don't think Bo is getting the most from what he has on the team and certainly from the staff. He picked a lot of young inexperienced friends to be his assistants. We are still paying for it now. Tom Osborne had some very hard times before he found the answers. He struggled in the 70s and 80s and usually found himself 1 or 2 games short and with a reputation for not being able to win against top 10 teams. There were many calls for him to be replaced. Its not as easy as just replacing the head coach in my opinion. Remember Craig Boh. was fired from NU when the Blackshirts did not perform as needed- he is now a great headcoach and was listed as a possible replacemetn for Bo in another post. Shawn Watson was run off and is now considered to be a guru at Louisville and a possible head coach. Frank Solich went on to become a good head coach at Ohio. I remember Bill Jennings complaining that we did not win because we just didn't have the talent. Bob Devaney came in 1962 and won with Jenning's talent. Some of that talent went on to the NFL and became some of the best ever Huskers in the NFL. We fired Jennings and he got a job at Kansas- taking his latest running back recruit from Omaha with him- Gale Sayers. I think the mix of assistants is probably just as important as who is the head coach.
  16. Bo did improve- from 602 yards against Wyoming to only 504 yards against UCLA. He did do better against Southern Mississippi. Unfortunately, the Big 10 only has a few teams as bad as Souther Mississippi. I cannot believe the defensive players are as bad as the results have been in the games against good teams. The DC needs to be replaced before Bo has to go too.
