  1. I prefer a power I with credible passing attacks. Our defense needs more flexibility and faster more agile players. We need linebackers who can cover passing like safeties and safeties who fill linebacker roles. We face a lot run heavy teams and spread teams- some who do both. Ohio State, at times had 5 receivers with only five lineman. Those five generally handled everything we through at the them. Fields usually had sufficient time to do anything he wanted. Our defense often failed to maintain their lanes allowing running lanes for Fields and Dobbins. Their play scenes had our corners and linebackers adjusting and running all over the field. Our blitzes are usually not concealed.
  2. The topic is missing in my opinion in our coaching efforts. I saw Barry taking himself out of the play due RPO misdirections. There were numerous tackles made tackling high and getting dragged for many yards after contact. Our defenders seem to have trouble shedding blocks and playing the ball. The pass defenders often don’t turn the heads to the ball and seem to be using a face guarding technique.
  3. Hard to say. I did not think the passing scheme was good but the our pass protection was terrible.
  4. Which coaching style is best- keep playing and encouraging players who make mistakes repeatedly or at some benching them? If a player continues to fumble, throw bad passes, draws flags, or misses blocks, why not bench them for a time? Reinforce the idea that if can’t get it done right, we will find someone who can! is there a real difference between first stringer not getting it done right and a second or third stringer’s inexperience?
  5. I think some of the criticisms on Frost are appropriate but he does not need to be replaced- just requests for changes and improvements. Rapid changeovers in staff don’t usually get good results. We fired Bohl and went on to be a great head coach at North Dakota State and is doing great at Wyoming. Solich has done good things at Ohio also. I hope the coaches are learning and improving each year and pray recruiting won’t suffer. I can remember when people wanted Osborne replaced because he played a lot weak teams but could not win the big ones. He made changes to win- mostly be recruiting speed.
  6. Could not agree more with those comments. The comments on the coordinators play calling is spot on, something I have felt in each game so far. I know it’s common now but I really don’t like passing out to the flats along the line for little gain. When our opponents do it, their receivers are usually 4-5 yards down field.
  7. I think 8-4 is too optimistic. I think 6 wins may be more realistic. We have struggled in every game so far with a weak offensive line and turnovers. The humiliation beat down on offense, defense and coaching against Ohio State proves that we have returned - far from it. we do not have the personnel or offense/defense schemes to compete in the top 20. Our staff needs perform at Ohio State’s level. They got far more improvements on their team over the past year than we did. I also think they study game films much better than we do. i would like to see an I formation based offense and a defense based on a 5-2.

    Scott Frost

I live in Texas so I don’t see or hear local football hype from Frost or anyone else. I think the high expectations are from the memories of the Devaney and Ozborne eras. All of the subsequent coaches felt the high expectations and were fired when they failed to meet them. You can’t blame Frost for the hype. Frost is not an outgoing screen personality, something he shares with Osborne and Pelion, and he does not clearly explain his thoughts to satisfy disappointed fans. I doubt that he will since he needs to maintain the team morale and motivation. He will never name the people who failed and were responsible for the loss. i wish he would be more open about weakness and what is being done to correct it. He tends to be vague and bland with his comments and they are not very satisfying- particularly week after week. Everybody has the right to complain, bitch, demand changes, etc. but its still just a game. The season for a championship run is probably over but the season is not. Our Huskers have more games and we will all support them, cheer them, and maybe cry with them. But- the players and coaches don’t want to be losers and they will be out there trying each week. All fans, including the fire the coach guys, Ned to be there too. If anyone gets fired, it’s the AD’s decision after the season is over. i would hope that future comments are directed at the play, what worked and what could be done better- instead of childish name calling and trash talk.
  9. I would not totally dismiss the altitude issue. My first duty station was Ft Carson and it took several months to acclimate to the altitude. Full exertion is unaffected initially but the longer the exertion is repeated your muscles don’t respond as quickly. The Huskers should have rotated players often and put them on oxygen on the sidelines. in the second half, there were many more missed tackles and yards after contact. They could have been sucking for oxygen they could not get their shoulders into the ball carrier- wound up reaching for arm tackles. Even with the altitude, the second half had less energy, bad tackling, weak play calling, safeties missing deep coverages, and a missed field goal. Colorado had the mojo in the second half and just outplayed us. I think we will see these problems many more times this against Wisconsin, Ohio State and Iowa. I can’t see us taking the Big 10 West now.
  10. The O line doesn’t get it done- in both games this year. I hope they could do better with straight ahead man on man blocking but they allow too many defensive lineman through gaps or just get beat. I don’t think get good pass routes from many of the receivers. I also feel that too many of our pass plays go directly to the sidelines wasting time getting upfield. They should throw most of their passes 5-15 yards deep upfield.
  11. Urban may be available in a year or two.
  12. Martinez may be the best QB that we have had but he is not Heisman material this year.
  13. I don’t think this team will live up to expectations. Today’s loss to a rival and in the manner it was lost will haunt this team all year. The offensive line line does not run block well enough to be a championship level team. Tackling technique in the second half was very poor. I think Frost needs to rethink his offense scheme. They need more work on developing a north-south game.
  14. Nebraska is not back. Poor tackling and lacking the ability to maintain the max effort and dominate.
  15. The offensive line play was weak and therefore the run game never really got established. Martinez did not have his best game. Overall, very concerned that the offensive line is not good enough. The defense played better than I expected but the pass defense had big holes despite the intercepts. I think this may have been a result of playing a lot of zone. Overall, I am happy to see they are playing much better. Concerned that the second stringers seemed to outplay the players they came in for. Didn’t the coaches see this in practice? I watched the the Colorado game. They are much better than South Alabama. The Huskers will need to play much better to beat them. We can’t rely on Pick 6’s and fumble TD scores to win every week. The Blackshirts will give up some scores this year and the Offense must score big on their own each game to get the win.
  16. May have missed it but what the offensive line tip off in the first quarter where OSU said they are pointing where we’re going?
  17. We will continue to offensive line penalties as long as our offensive linemen are fat, slow and out of shape working against defenders who not. They get beat on the line and use their arms instead of their feet to stay with the block. We have heard the commentators state that our players are gassed and breathing hard with their hands on their hips. They saud it in the first quarter of this last game. Being 330 is worthless unless you can move that mass faster than the 200 pounders coming at you.
  18. Does anyone think we will win a game this year? With our tendency to have turnovers, penalties and inability to control the line of scrimmage on eithe side of the ball— I don’t see us winning a game this year.
  19. These are mostly young and inexperienced players. They need intense coaching but I think they need more full speed contact scrimmaging. They take bad angles, over run the ball carrier, commit far too many shoot your foot penalties, etc. the full speed contact in games has them at 0-4. I think their morale and motivation are suffering. I think Martinez has great potential but he is a liability also. He gets flustered under pressure and fails to throw the ball away taking losses and he throws some bad balls under pressure- showing his inexperience. I also think some play calling is made for success for the inexperienced rather than plays needed for scores. I hate are waiting for a rebuild year after all of the seasons since Solich and Peking. But I fear we may only win 1 or 2 games this year. My biggest fear is that it will be harder to recruit great talent with reputation over the past three years. PS. I have never liked the three man front defense.
  20. I pray that Bethune Cookman has a bad day when we play them- probably the only game we might win this year.
  21. I believe that we need to pray for a miracle to become bowl eligible for a decent recruiting year. I don’t think the QB is the problem. The lines are our problem. The offensive line are too fat and slow for just about everything. The backs don’t seem to be effective blockers either. The D Line is not dominating the line of scrimmage. Don’t know if it’s the scheme or a lack of discipline. We have not been very successful turning outside runs back in or maintaining lane coverages when putting on the pressure. They need to shed blocks better than they have done.
  22. I have felt for the several years, including Frost’s games, that we call too many safe plays instead of calling plays for first downs and points. Football should always be a North-south game. We waste too many play throwing into the flats or trying to run wide. We just don’t have the speed to block outside and our guys don’t have the speed or experience to run option like plays.
  23. Riley won 4 games. I think we will be lucky to four games this year. Our offense line is nothing- too slow and not skilled. They are incompetent. The defense lacks aces discipline taking themselves out of the position too many times. They often give too many yards after contact. If Michigan is a Big 10 Power, then the Huskers are a high school team. I think Frost has a 2-3 year build job ahead of him. How do you recruit quality position players when your program has been sucking gas for three years?
  24. I think its too early to dump on Bunch. Its really his first game in college against a good team. The whole team shows signs of inexperience. The team has a lot of young players, all new coaches and new offense /defense schemes- not to mention a new head coach. Things will be flaky but by mid season we should see improvements and the team start to geol. Without big improvements, we may be heading for 4 and 7 season. We have way too many turnovers, penalties at the wrong time/critical times, starters being ejected, and some inconsistencies reacting to defenses, #67 finishing too many plays standing on his feet, etc. In many ways, the Colorado and Troy losses were same story- we played good teams and we killed our chances through our mistakes and inexperience.
  25. With the lawyers going after head injuries and the recent changes for blocking and targeting; I think we are a long term trend that ends with Div 1 Flag Football teams.
