  1. Did anyone say he was being hired only for his recruiting chops? Make no mistake, though, it's his "recruiting chops" that got him the offer.
  2. Hes a DB coach. Not a head coach or coordinator. Them being 3-9 has nothing to do with him. I disagree with your premise (that positions coaches have nothing to do with record), but agree that he's not responsible for 3-9, if for no other reason than he was only hired to Arizona this year. But there is something to be said in that he's never been part of a winning culture, as far as I can tell. San Jose St was terrible while he was there, for example. In the end, he's being hired because he's supposed to be a great recruiter - will be interesting to see if he can pull kids to NU as well as he seems to have pulled to Arizona during a partial recruiting cycle. I find it interesting that some here are not eviscerating him for lasting less than a year at Arizona - essentially bailing on his commitment there. Personally, I have not much problems with a coach jumping, especially if the players/recruits are able to bail, too, if needed.
  3. They could within the paradigm of the market. If NU wanted to pay coordinator money for him to be a position coach, they may let him go. On the flip side, not just money may hold him in Arizona. His recruiting on the west coast is easier to maintain on a P12 team. And for junior assistants, picking a region/conference has an enormous impact on career geographic trajectory. He may decide he wants to stay in the west/southwest rather than transition to the B10 country. I've not read his full bio though.
  4. If we really wanted him Arizona couldnt keep up with us in the $$$ department. Not sure that's true. Every P5 program has a ton of revenue. http://sports.usatoday.com/ncaa/finances/ With 10% of this coming from the academic side at U of A. The athletic department itself doesn't have the money Nebraska does and there's no way they are asking for a bigger subsidy to increase an assistant coaches salary.Hey, cm is never wrong. All p5 programs make the same amount money. All p5 programs can pay as much as every other one to their coaches. Just look, all p5 programs coaches make the the same amount. Resisting the urge to call you out on your foolish conclusion jumping.
  5. I thought it was common knowledge how to distinguish between P5 schools and non-P5 schools. Guess that's why common knowledge is said to be an oxymoron.

Which appears to double nebraska's "profit margin."

  8. Seems like a good move for both teams. NU gets a good recruiter per the recruitniks (hard to tell since he hasn't been in CFB or with any specific team for very long) who has relationships with specific targets. Williams puts a big name program on his resume, which is key for a young coach.
  9. Read in context, that's not what epley said.
  10. Not to mention how little we threw deep over the middle. Seemed the read was always fly route up boundary. TA looked good on a couple of deep crossing patterns. But we don't throw a post much.
  11. Has it ever been verified what the hangup has been with Frost? I recall hearing somewhere that he got into it pretty badly with TO after the 96 ASU game. I also recall hearing that he was interviewed or at least contacted when Bo was here for OC. Apparently he wanted Head Coach in waiting status and Bo wasn't having it. Again, that's all hearsay, no way to truly verify it. Can anyone shed any light on the Frost-NU relationship? TO and frost are on great terms. I think the timing was wrong in '10, but I question whether that convo ever happened. What is benning and frosts relationship? Does benning like frost as a coach? I wonder what he thinks of frost considering timing of their time in the program and Bennings relationship with LP. I think benning often lets his personal feelings and need to be perceived as having "inside information" influence how he reports. This sort of unsubstantiated public claim is just one example of many.
  12. As a slashing back with more top end speed than any of our last few backs, had he played in a spread, you'd have likely thought of him differently. Would love to see him get a shot in the NFL, and I think he will.
  13. I'm not really seeing how this is a meaningful metric, especially when applying a standard deviation.
  14. I rarely agreed with a Callahan move, but from what I understood of the circumstances, removal was probably the only real option. I guess it's been long enough that it's not really a controversy anymore. What are the circumstances you're talking about? Iirc, he punched a much smaller teammate, injuring him in the process. In a lockerroom. He also had problems under Solich. I agree that he's a phenomenal talent though.
  15. Why do I feel the need to form opinions that aren't uneducated, stupid, ignorant or clueless? I think that's something everyone should strive for. Here are my opinions based on the information I have at hand: 1. Post season individual honors tend to flow from unit success more than intrinsic ability or even production 2. NU has historically (going back to the expansion of the conference to 12 teams) had about 5.8 defenders per season receive honors of some sort from the coaches. NU has 5 this year, which puts it not that far outside of the average. So, I don't think the lack of all-conference players tells us much about the talent level of the current team. Do you actually disagree with that statement or are you just looking to argue? P.s., if you're really just worried about people on a BBS having a strongly held opinion, why are you questioning me on mine rather than the 3 to 6 people who have used the subject matter of this thread to form an opinion that NU doesn't have the talent it needs to compete?
  16. By the same token, then, can you prove there aren't playmakers already here? Nope. But as is the tendency with many here, the first instinct is to blame players before current coaches.
  17. Can you prove this? What sort of proof are you asking for among the returning players? Star rankings? We have well regarded recruits already on the depth chart. Stats? How about, for example, Kieron Williams being among the top of the conference in interceptions. NFL potential? Chris Jones has it. Young and Kalu have great potential. No one thought Barrett Ruud or D. Williams were much of playmakers before great coaching got a hold of them. Same with Suh, for that matter.
  18. Interesting. I thought we had all the talent we needed to compete for, and win championships. So, if Nebraska has more overall picks than its B10W brethren, what are you going to say? Honors follow success. Not the other way around.
  19. Difference makers are already there. Hopefully the coaches put them in a position to be successful next year.
  20. Appears to be pretty inline with what we've seen historically from the defense (per the coaches' lists): 2015 - 3 (note, another example of bad team results meaning fewer individual awards) 2014 - 5 2013 - 4 2012 - 6 2011 - 3 2010 - 9 (top defense in conference) 2009 - 9 (top defense in conference) 2008 - 4 (all HM, except Suh who was 2nd team - again, an example of unit performance dictating the individual awards) 2007 - 3 (all HM) 2006 - 7 2005 - 6 2004 - 4 2003 - 8 (another example of a well regarded defensive unit being rewarded with individual honors) Unfortunately, for the year 2002, the site I'm using doesn't capture third team or honorable mentions so number list those honored on 1st or 2nd teams: 2002 - 0 but at least 1 honorable mention (Barrett RuuD) (again, poor year equals few individual awards, even though members of that defensive roster, including Demorrio Williams and Barrett Ruud, would go onto garner several impressive awards the following year) 2001 - 4 (HM may not have been listed - it's unclear) HM is listed before 2001: 2000 - 4 (only 1 first or second teamer, which is surprisingly few considering the results that team had, but an indication of how dynamics change when conferences grow - by the way, who is Troy Watchorn? one of only two defenders named to an all conference team that year, he was a former walkon) 1999 - 6 1998 - 5 (didn't realize Foreman was only HM among the coaches - that's crazy) 1997 - 9 1996 - 10 Big 8 Conference Years 1995 - 9 1994 - 9 1993 - 7 1992 - 6 1991 - 11 (appears to have not had a "third team" at that time; only 3 of the 11 were on the 1st or 2nd team) 1990 - 5 (site I have does not distinguish between teams or who awarded them, i.e., coaches or AP, so probably fewer if just looking at coaches) 1989 - 10 1988 - 9 1987 - 8 (this is from AP because coaches did not name a team before then apparently)

  22. As is the norm, sort of like the Heisman, these recognition tend to reflect team success as much as individual ability or performance. Do well as a unit and your guys get a lot of attention and honors. Look no further than Gerry, who, in one fewer games: - had more tackles than any DB honored above him (7th among DBs and 28th in overall in conference) - finished tied for 5th in the conference with 4 interceptions (1st had 6 interceptions) - finished tied for 8th in the conference in passes defended (4th among those who were named to a team) I can kind of see him finishing on the 2nd team for both, but 3rd team is odd. If NU wins 10+ games, he's at least a unanimous 2nd teamer and probably squeezes in on at least one first team. Caught my eye, but Kieron Williams, who was tied for 2nd in the conference for interceptions doesn't even get HM? That's odd. http://www.cfbstats.com/2016/leader/827/player/split01/category19/sort01.html Here's the link to the lists: http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/big10/sports/m-footbl/auto_pdf/2016-17/misc_non_event/FBTuesAllB1G.pdf Rough Count Breakdown of Coaches Team by Program (excludes specialists): OSU - 10 Mich - 10 Wisc - 10 PSU - 8 Neb - 5 Iowa - 5 Ind - 5 Minn - 4 MSU - 4 NWU - 4 Illinois - 3 Purd - 3 (only HM) Unanimous First Team: Charlton from UM Lewis from OSU Peppers from UM McMillan from OSU Watt from Wisconsin King from Iowa Lewis from Michigan Hooker from OSU Biggest Disparity: 1st team media DLman from Illinois is only HM under coaches
