If somebody with a worldview this f#&%ing completely bonkers was in line next to me at the grocery store, I'd let them cut ahead of me just to get them the hell away from me in case today was the day their brain decided to break.

And yet some Americans are ready to put him in charge again. What the f#&% is wrong with us?

If my "some" you mean like 75 million, then you are correct.

I still think Trump is more likely to win in November than he is to lose. Biden's poll numbers are getting better but he's nowhere near the 5% mark nationally he needs to win by in order to pull off an Electoral College victory.

  2. Pretend for a moment that you were actually grifted into voting for this pathetic excuse for a person not once, but twice.

If this applies to whomever is reading this, please evaluate your political choices and disengage from political participation.

This might (mostly) be the case now, but seemingly always wasn't so. SSO has had a series of relatively informed/insider accounts of the state of NIL over the last few years:

    https://herbieshangout.com/2023/12/22/nebraska-and-the-collective/

    https://herbieshangout.com/2023/01/09/we-arent-getting-you-here-with-our-nil-bid-with-that-said-we-aint-losing-a-bidding-war/

    Some highlights:

The reality is the fact that Nebraska was probably closer to 50th in terms of what we were paying guys and how we were organized. Don’t forget, we grabbed Trey Palmer by telling him he would sell NFTs to our fans among other things:

PRESENTING… Nebraska x Trey Palmer NFT. LIMITED quantities of these NFTs will be available for purchase beginning Saturday, April 9th at 12 PM CST until Sunday, April 17th https://t.co/IroV6Oktqe #PoweredByABM @treythekiid3

    — Athlete Branding & Marketing (@_ABMusa_) April 8, 2022
That site can’t even be reached anymore. We did a little better grabbing guys like Ben Scott, Billy Kemp, and Jeff Sims the following year. But lost out bidding wars for guys like Walter Rouse to Oklahoma. Things just weren’t right. We needed a ton of help.

    1890 Collective
I apologize for the language, but it was a f#&%ing s#!t show for Nebraska and NIL collectives the first 2 years. Luckily we had some of Nebraska’s most powerful donors Tom and Shawn Peed decide to reach out and ask what they could do to help. With Matt Davison no longer in a football role with the University, and having a pretty extensive resume for fundraising in different capacities, it almost made too much sense for them to have him heading the efforts of 1890. After all, Matt had already been doing most of the heavy lifting for securing the funds for the new football facility. Him being an alum helped, as he was going to have to have conversations with players on what the football team can do for them. And by the way, if football doesn’t work out, look what playing for the team can do for you like it did for him.

There was only one problem, Nebraska was trying to do it the way the NCAA intended it to be. We would talk to recruits and say “you can tweet about Runza” or other companies like that. “We have so much fan support here that as soon as you take off businesses will be lining up to get you in a commercial.” It made sense, there’s a ton of support for our beloved Cornhuskers. What Nebraska didn’t see coming was the fact that many schools were going to just give recruits money to sign. No need for the tweet or to spend time on a commercial, just ink your name and we are good.

Want me to really blow your mind? So we figured out that we needed to pay people to just come here… and we did a great job at that shortly after. Casey Thompson commits and Trey Palmer comes on up with Mickey with a sweet NIL deal. Only one problem, we actually ran out of money. Don’t believe me? One of our top transfers was told he had to wait to sign for us to get the cash to him. It’s almost too crazy to believe, but i’ll add some more points to this to let you guys see just how far behind we were. We were scrambling to scrape up any booster donations we could get to add a few more pieces.

According to On3 sports, Nebraska only had one player on the top 100 for NIL dollars, and that was Trey Palmer. You have schools like Illinois, Purdue, Minnesota, Northwestern, all with guys that according to On3 have higher NIL grades/deals than our top guy. Now, do I fully believe the valuations and those things on there? No, but they aren’t as far off as us being #3 18 months ago for NIL then finishing with the worst class since joining the conference. So again, either we are really good at NIL and just don’t promote that we are which would be the dumbest thing ever, or we just aren’t there yet.

I personally put very little stock in herbies hangout posts, particularly when he's using On3 Sports NIL valuations for players - numbers they completely makeup and use athletes Twitter/IG follower counts to  try and come up with an NIL number. Lets be honest: the reason Nebraska struggled in the early days of NIL was because the state of the team was terrible. Scott Frost was a terrible coach and Nebraska Football was at it's lowest point. NIL dollars aren't going to be flowing. I'm not sure if that's Matt Davidson's fault.

That doesn't mean what he's saying isn't true, but a lot of what he's discussing seems like collective growing pains and learning how to navigate the NIL space on the fly. I distinctly remember Oregon getting into NFTs for NIL purposes around that time as well.

Now, the irony is lost on the horde of people who have and will vote for this guy. The expectations for his supporters should be lower than you can possibly imagine. But, still, this could not be funnier.

So are there other NIL organizations here other than the 1890 Initiative? Is it the most "legitimate"?

Idk why but the NIL groups make me nervous. It just seems like it is the wild wild west right now.

There may be smaller ones, but the biggest by far is 1890. They seem to be the one the school "unofficially" works with regarding NIL.

By all accounts, 1890 is a well run NIL operation despite weird message board missgivings about Matt Davidson. If you chose to donate, most of your money will go directly towards Husker Athletics - with a small amount going towards costs to run the operation.

It’s interesting that they think this appeals to the majority of Americans.

I think this only appeals to the Trump base who don't really live in reality anymore. Most of these people are convinced that America is a barren wasteland infested with Immigrants, Trans people, and murderous criminals just beyond the horizon.

This election is going to be decided by an extremely small number of people in 6 states that do not pay attention to politics and are angry that Beefy 5-Layer Burritos are $0.30 more expensive today than they were in 2020. Voters like this barely know anything about either candidate and chalk up most news about them as just "politics". Biden has to win huge margins of low information, low propensity voters which just may not be possible.

You can pretty much assume anyone who started their career as a walk-on (even if they were on scholarship at one point) and most of the guys transferring in each year are not technically on scholarship. Also guys coming back for 5th/6th years - my understanding is guys who sign out of high school get that scholarship for 4 years, but after that they could be taken off. Several high school guys are not on scholarship either. There are a lot more than 10 guys in those buckets.

Right, at this point, who's on scholarship and reported as such to the NCAA really doesn't matter. Nebraska will report 85 scholarship players, but may have a roster of 150.

Nobody knows for sure, but a good number of 'non-scholarship' players are essentially getting NIL payouts that make the distinction between who's on scholarship and who isn't pretty vague. A non scholarship player may have their tuition, housing, extra spending money paid for as part of their deal. It's a strategy that Rhule seems to believe in, and we'll see if using NIL resources to bring in a large quantity of players is the correct approach.

These numbers are interesting.   KC’s number is compared against 2023 when the city experienced its deadliest year on record.  This years number is also recently trending up.  Not sure if this reflects other cities too, but as for KC, it’s not the flex someone is wanting it to be.

That said, reducing the murder rate is ALWAYS a good thing no matter who is in charge.

Absolutely. The good thing is that violent crime across the board has been on a downward trajectory since the 1970s. As we distance ourselves from COVID, violent crime seems to be resuming it'd downward trend.

  11. Really amazing considering the job killing, worker hating, anti-growth economic policies of the Biden Administration.

But my God, posting RFK Jr. videos after Trump is facing 14 criminal indictments for interfering in Georgia's election and in federal elections. The cases are ongoing... and guess who's fault it is? VOTERS LIKE YOU for supporting him.

We need to collectively stop coddling these voters who live in rural states and collectively place proper blame that they've given rise to Trump. These people need to be regarded with mocking and derision.

Yes he actually would have dominated the Republican primary based on polling data if Trump were not a candidate.

He is also a MUCH better primary candidate than Trump.  If Trump ends up anywhere near Biden this election, DeSantis would have been President if not for Trump.

This isn't really true. The problem with MAGA candidates without Trump is that the horde of morons refuse to trust any non-Trump candidate. MAGA is convinced Trump is their savior. Any non-Trump candidate is one Q-anon post away from being labeled a pedophile and a RINO. DeSantis entire candidacy revolved around the word "woke" and losing a PR battle with Disney, and this was a terrible candidate.

If you wanted to dominate elections, my advice would be to first not vote for embarrassing candidates like Trump in 2016 and 2020. If you continue to participate in politics - which you have no business doing and should avoid at all costs - nominate normal candidates. If Republicans nominated Mitt Romney types for all their races, they would control the Presidency, House, and probably 57 Senate seats. Republicans play politics on easy mode but they punch themselves in the face repeatedly.

I’m not so sure about that.

At least of trends continue as they were from 2012->2016->2020.

Political realignment on education has caused former swing states like Iowa, Ohio and Florida to no longer be competitive. It seems that, unless something drastic happens, other states like Wisconsin will soon be as competitive as Iowa. The question is when Wisconsin crossesover to "unwinnable". It may be there now, but certainly by 2028 is going to be a hard state for Democrats to win.

    12 hours ago, teachercd said:

Yes, and they all lived in red districts and moved to blue?

You are overthinking it...you don't need to do that.  This election was over a very long time ago.

I think it's a pretty well known phenomenon that Americans are moving to a small handful of cities, mostly in the south. Cities like Atlanta, Phoenix, and huge swaths of Texas are exploding. As a result, they are turning the partisan lean of those states Blue.

The question is if the red tilt of the states in the upper Midwest is happening faster than the blue tilt in the south.

  17. 2 hours ago, TGHusker said:

Many of the swing states had very narrow wins for Biden in 2020.  I don't think Trump picks up any more voters there.  I think he losses voters in those states due to his criminal issues as well as the abortion issue.  He can turn out his voters as much as he wants - he'll get those red states - that is a given.  But more and more thoughtful GOPers are leaving trump and they will either vote 3rd party, not vote at all for the top of the ticket or hold their nose and vote Biden - in all 3 cases Trump losses a 2020 voter.  The Arizona abortion case just tossed Arizona deeper into Biden's camp IMHO.

The problem is those swing states - Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Nevada - are increasing their Republican tilt. They were more Republican in 2020 than they were in 2016, and they'll be even more Republican in 2024 than they were in 2020.

Trump isn't going to win over many Biden voters, but he will handedly win low propensity disaffected voters. Combine that with an enthusiasm advantage - Biden has massive enthusiasm problems - and I see it being very difficult for him to win enough swing states to win an Electoral College victory.

  18. 48 minutes ago, TGHusker said:

This seems so extremely unlikely. I'm really trying to figure out how and why people think Joe Biden is going to win.

It seems to me that there's a decent chance that the electoral college bias is so strongly against Democrats that it may not be possible for them to win. Joe Biden will probably need to win the national popular vote by nearly 5% to win the electoral college, which is a margin that may not be possible given how deeply polarized the electorate it and how impossible it is to sway political opinions.

It seems likely that we're heading towards a 2016 environment where Biden wins the popular vote by ~2.5-3%, leading to a decisive electoral college loss. There's a reason Trump's electoral strategy isn't even trying to sway opinion - they don't need to. They need to drum up the base to turn out and cruise to victory because they have tremendous built in advantages.

I don't necessarily land on either side of this, and think language is never static and people have likely always bemoaned the 'lessened impact' of words being used more frequently throughout time.

My main question is, how and when do you know something is a genocide while it's happening in real time as opposed to calling that with the lens of history.

It's a fair question, and @Moiraine gave a good answer.

Identifying genocide in real time is difficult. But signs of actual genocide are: using state resources to systematically round up all members of a minority group, state resources to indiscriminately kill that minority group, and propaganda messaging that says the aforementioned minority group needs to be annihilated.

Employing a poor military strategy that gets civilians killed is not the same thing.

Genocide as a word losses it's meaning the more tik tok activist theater throws it around when civilians are killed in war.
