It aired a year or two after I graduated but if you knew about what happened it was obvious where they got the idea. Very surreal.

Been listening to Cowherd for 10 years. I have heard ANGRILY dismiss a caller who stated that he just says stuff for controversy. Bottom Line: Collin believes what he says AND he is usually right. BUT, man did he just give IOWA some bulletin board material and there is something better about IOWA this year. I think NU can win but better bring the A game for 4 quarters. Not to derail the thread but... So I don't listen to Cowherd that often but I always thought this was kind of a schtick with him. In fact, I am pretty sure Fox has been running a promo for his new show that is a clip of him saying he doesn't just make controversial assertions to generate interest and I know I have heard him devote segments to that topic in the handful of times I've tuned into his show over the past year. If a caller accuses him of it on air I could see getting angry but I have to believe he has veto power over the clips Fox uses in its promos; he's clearly media savvy and very image conscious. I'm not saying it's a fair rep but it's there and he does seem to cultivate it. Again, I don't really listen to him, I just saw his "Iowa is Fraud About to be Exposed" clip pop up on a few Husker feeds.

I think Iowa looks ahead and ends up with a less than stellar win over Purdue and that rattles their confidence (and playoff ranking) a bit so they come in distracted and on their heels. I don't think the Husker will come out flat off the bye, and that, with the insane energy in Memorial, will be the deciding factor. My biggest concern is Cowherd's prediction since he just says whatever to troll. I don't think his analysis, such as it is, is wrong but I don't think he believes anything he says either.

I agree with most of this. The team is playing for pride, for the seniors, and for the extra practices that come with a bowl bid, but you're absolutely right that it matters more what Iowa is than what the Huskers are come black Friday. With the way the season has played out, winning out the last two and defeating an undefeated Iowa will be a great, positive way for the team to move forward and will help alleviate some of the damage done by the bad losses (Illinois, Purdue). IF Riley can pull this off, he'll finish with two top 10 wins, two tough luck losses (BYU, Miami), and two close losses to (potentially) ranked teams (at this point, not sure if the loser of their head to head match up finishes ranked). IF it shakes out that way, those terrible Illinois and Purdue losses won't loom quite so large, especially with the clear mistakes and injuries.

The thing that concerned me most when he was hired was that I read dozens of quotes from ex-players, media types, and other coaches about what a nice guy Riley is, but I didn't read any about what a solid coach he is. USC twice tried to hire MR and likely would have tried again this year if he were still at Oregon State but I guess some guy who maybe had a drink with a guy who maybe is actually someone important in some program in the PAC-12 probably knows best. All that said, SE's letter was a terrible, bewildering PR blunder that could do nothing but hurt MR and the team. That's all on SE and UNL's administration, not on MR and the players.

So the answer to firing Pelini and making a rash choice in Riley, is to hire the guy with no HC experience who's been running someone else's pass-happy offense in Oregon, or the coach of Liberty University with the 52-67 career record? This. I don't know what kind of bizzarro world explains the overlap between those lusting after Frost as HC one moment and all hot and bothered the next because Riley hasn't shown sufficient "commitment" to the run this year, but it exists. I don't want to sh!t all over Bo (even though that is technically the purpose of his thread); but I honestly do not understand the lack of hate for Scott Frost; that douche hid in a closet while his "girlfriend" was beat up and dragged down the stairs. Bo's teams definitely didn't start out very well on penalties but they got quite a bit better. But the better number to go by is penalties per game. Nebraska played one more game than OSU in 2009, two more in 2010, and one more in 2011, 2012 and 2014. So you're not really comparing apples to apples. Ranking in penalties per game starting in 2008: Nebraska - 103, 92, 114, 99, 66, 81, 63 Oregon State - 89, 112, 69, 109, 80, 92, 122 So Oregon State was noticeably better from 2008-2010 while Nebraska was significantly better since then. Fair enough. I couldn't find those numbers before but it is a much more fair comparison. I did manage to find them after your post and looked back at penalty yards per game between 2008-2014. Riley's Oregon State averaged 61.52, Bo's Huskers 59.44, so that's a 2 yard disadvantage to Riley coached teams. There's the same ~2 yards disadvantage to Riley coached teams if you take out the best and worst seasons for each (2013 and 2014 for Riley, 2010 and 2014 for Bo). I don't think that's a huge downgrade but it's not exactly ideal. On the bright side, Oregon State had a better and more consistent turnover margin (Average +.085 | 5 yrs with positive margins | 1 negative | 1 even) than the Huskers (Average -.385 | 2 positive yrs | 4 negative | 1 even) between 2008-2014.

The great thing about stats is you can look this stuff up and compare. While Riley's not the guy you bring in to fix a penalties problem, he also didn't bring this problem with him to Nebraska. Between 2008 and 2014 both Nebraska and Oregon State average out to be the #27th most penalized team. To be fair to Bo, the team showed improvement under the last few years and this time range also includes the Texas 12 trying to screw us on the way out. I was at the Wisconsin game. It was the first home game I've been able to come back for since Tommy Lee was on the field with the marching band. In the last few minutes, when things looked like they were actually going to break right for the Huskers, the players were so pumped up and interacting with the crowd. I've never seen Memorial stadium like that and am glad I was there. It was easily one of the best live sporting event experiences in my life. When the wheels feel off just a few minutes later I was upset that we lost but felt even more terrible for the players. I wanted them to win for them but you could tell they wanted to win for the fans.

I lived in Austin from fall 2006 until this spring. Texas fans are the worst, I mean just terrible. They stopped showing up at games years ago, even when Mack was still there. They booed their own team all the time, the saddest was when they booed Garrett Gilbert off the field and the next day it comes out he was trying play hurt and basically had to have his shoulder sewn back on. On top of that, when they announced Charlie Strong was the new head coach it became painfully obvious how many unreconstructed halfwits are in that fan base.

We're not Longhorns fans, so I really hope there isn't any booing.

It was another in string of questionable terrible j@ck@ss play calls that ended up busted at the snap but I don't think anyone is lying about it not supposed to be a pass. This sort of thing is going to happens when you are trying to install a new system and are relying on different personnel every week. If the reports are right, Carter and Ozigbo both had the play wrong and Armstrong tried to improvise. That stupid plays take away spoiled positive games for both Carter and Ozigbo. It was a rough day for Armstrong too but he has progressed enough as a passer this year that he could should be an awesome dual-threat cornerstone of a solid running-based offensive scheme. The coaching staff clearly doesn't want that and so he's trying to fit their system. That's what he is supposed to do but I think it's hurting his game; a year ago I think he tucks it and runs on that play. I can't fault him for trying to make a play but he's clearly been overcoached not to run and for a player with his skills that's a huge mistake.

It's a terrible, heart-breaking loss but it came down to a 50-yard Hail Mary with 1 second to go. Sometimes you win those, sometimes you lose them. No one put up the single season rushing record on us. Armstrong looked good. Lost of suspensions and injuries (on both sides), just goes to show why you play the games. This came down to two missed field goals.

I was over on buckyville reading some of this also. I usually only go to there leftover board the have some funny stuff on it. Anyway, some of them are kind of upset he didn't get into Whiskey while others are saying they won't lower their standards to let him in. etc. It is pretty well split from what I can tell. Whiskey grads to tend to think their degree is of a greater value than most and the definitely look down on Nebraska in that respect. Usually when fan forums start making these sorts of arguments it's all uniformed BS. With 300+, Nebraska has had more Academic All-Americans than anyone, by a healthy margin. ND and MIT the only other two schools to break 200. I'm not sure how many Academic All-Americans Wisconsin has in 2015, but in 2013 they had 34(!). Nebraska has had more than 100 on just the football team. Also as of 2013, WI did have an impressive streak of 34 consecutive years with at least one Academic All-American. That tied them with two other schools for second all time, trailing the top school with 42 consecutive years. That school? Nebraska. All that's not to say that Wisconsin isn't a very well regarded university, but Nebraska has a much, much better track record of academic excellence with their "student ath-O-letes," which is really all that is relevant to this sort of rationalizing.
