BS.  That would be a really poor management decision.  What would they do, say, "But it's a secret, so please don't tell anybody?"  The athletic department will meet with the players just before they announce it to the press.

Correct if this were the case it would have been leaked by 30-40 players by now.

OR! Or, he's the only one of those three with anything worth investigating.

Exactly. The other 2 are sitting college coaches that UF doesn't need permission from the SEC to hire. Also in another thread I heard UF was holding a presser to hire Chip today, interesting, maybe those Florida message board posters don't speak the gospel....

Im not a red sea scrolls member so I cant read it but there is a thread that says john parrella to be named interim tomorrow. Dont know if that info is different than anything we are getting here

Lets just say where that rumor is coming from is the same source that said a certain TCU ad was a lock to Nebraska.

The younger lady posted this today cause she was at the UCF game. She told Scott “Can’t wait to see you in Lincoln next year!”

He turned, looked at her and smiled according to her

This might not mean anything but figured I’d share

This is legitimately the most concrete information hinting at Frost to Nebraska in all 92 pages of this thread.

Some of the local guys are very, very well-connected, but even their sources can have the wrong information.

There are a few local guys I trust more than others and, so far, they've publicly been mum because they don't get into the rumor game much.

Gary Sharp is one of the guys I hold in really regard. Not saying he's right about Frost to UF, but him hinting at the possibility and saying Moos might have someone in mind we haven't discussed - I'll take that over 2nd hand internet rumors any day.

These are the positives in firing Riley now to me:

    1. Let's everyone know he won't be here next year and we are officially looking for a new coach

    2. Doesn't let Florida steal Frost before we even get out the gate

    3. Appeases many fans calling for his head

    The negatives are:

    1. Makes us look bad.  Riley isn't a good coach but he is respected and liked and it will look like we are kicking him when he is down

    2. Team probably fully gives up and we go 4-8 for sure.  Look at Florida getting stomped by Mizzou - they didn't even try

    3. One of the incompetent assistants Riley has gets named interim head coach

I'm not even going to talk about the money because in my opinion, people who think we will get out of paying Riley every dime his contract states are living in fantasyland. Bizness is bizness and Nebraska and Riley are big boys who signed binding contracts.  If I'm Riley I sure don't let you run me out of town and then let you off the hook of paying me.

I'm ok either way and I don't think anyone will judge us TOO harshly for firing him now.  I only hope that keeping him doesn't prevent us from getting Frost.  If it does than that is completely unacceptable.  If there is even a 10% chance of that we need to fire Riley today.

1 and 2 can be accomplished without a mid-season firing. Literally the only thing a mid-season firing will accomplish is cater to the small group of fans out for blood and need for someone to be fired IMMEDIATELY to make up for the fact a couple husker losses ruined their fall. Florida didn't fire their coach to get a head start on the SF sweepstakes's,  they fired him with cause so they could get out of buying him out. To fans wanting him fired right now - wait like 3 weeks, this can be a win/win for all parties.

I would say that its time to make it public that Riley and staff would not be returning and leave at that.  As soon as the Iowa game is over, then get to interviewing your people.  It won't take long to interview the first person (Frost) and have your answer to move forward with.  I am sure that Frost will want to see his team thru, but you never know, he might let his coaching staff and players do the work so he can hit the ground recruiting for the RED N.

It's not that simple. You want to catch coaches on the way up, not on the way down.

I think Kelly did a pretty good job on the field in Philly, but he was really beaten down after they chased him out of town.

He was given a crappy hand with the San Francisco 49ers, but failed to exceed even Jim Tomsula, the unimaginative position coach they threw in the year before. Kelly seemed tired and kinda broken at the end of that gig.

Chip caught lightening in a bottle in Oregon, the perfect storm of talent, imagination and Phil Knight's money.  So although he "proved" he could do that, it's hardly a given he can catch lightening in a different bottle. It's no slight to Kelly or Nebraska to suggest he just might not be a Nebraska kinda guy either.

The young guy with less baggage, more to prove, and the hot hand Chip Kelly had when he was younger may be the safer bet.

Appreciate the well thought out answer. I guess my point was since TO we've hired 2 Coordinators, a guy with zero college experience and a guy that in 20 years never won his conf. And now we're thumbing our nose at a guy who has won his conf, won BCS bowls and played in national titles? Young up and comer with a high ceiling = SF. Been at the top of the mountain = CK. Honestly I don't think we could go wrong with either.

I think he would also bring some probation with him. SF all the way.

Does everyone see NCAA violations and assume Kelly was doing some really shady things at Oregon? This is from ESPN.com:

"Chip Kelly met the NCAA announcement that it had banned him from college football for 18 months with characteristic straightforwardness. He didn't make excuses. He didn't blame someone else, even as the NCAA made clear that Kelly had been unaware that his staff had employed Willie Lyles in a manner not allowed by the NCAA manual."

"As the NCAA made clear, Kelly committed none of the violations himself. His résumé may be smudged, but his hands are clean. Any athletic director who reads the infractions case will be able to go to his president and trustees and make a case for Kelly."

Honestly respect Kelly for the way he handled things at Oregon when this came up - let's not act like hes Rick Pitino.

  10. Are people really wondering why Moos would prefer Kelly over Frost??? I love SF and want him to return home but look at Kelly's resume, I mean if you are part of the "we need a proven coach" club - it ain't gonna get any better than Kelly. 46-7 (33-3) in 4 years, 3 top 5 finishes, 2 BCS bowl wins and 4 points away from winning a national title. Now I really don't think were gonna get Kelly, but that would be about as big of a splash hire that you could make.

  11. If we didn't get Frost for whatever reason, I wouldn't mind them going after Brent Venables. I think he at the very least would be Pelini, but with class and personality (I believe his ceiling is much higher than that though). He is young, energetic, has mid-west ties, has coached and played under Bill Snyder, coached under Dabo and Stoops as well. People drooling over Frost playing scout team QB, Venables did that too. I think we would give him a large asst pool, and I believe he would be able to poach a couple of coaches from Clemson.

Some hilarious tidbits from the 2014 head coach search thread, namely the posters who thought hiring Scott Frost was a terrible idea.

Someone suggested 85 year old Bobby Bowden. Paul Chryst was a HARD PASS (don't blame people on that, just funny he is 27-6/16-4 since then).

Exactly why I asked my above question.  This could be fool's gold.

I think White would a be a wonderful hire even without Frost. His three major coaching hires have been on the money. Frost is crushing it there, but take a look at mens basketball and baseball. Dawkins was hired as the basketball coach this past year, in his first season he won 24 games and had UCF in the NIT semis (keep in mind he took over a 12-18 team). I follow college baseball very closely, so when they hired Greg Lovelady, I knew it was a homerun. In his first season as coach at UCF they went 40-22 and won the conference - also qualified for the NCAA baseball tournament (keep in mind he took over a 26-33 team). So yes, outside of the Frost connection, White would be a fantastic hire and has a track record to show it.
