This is more of a "phantom" thought.  The problem in college football has not been a 3-4 loss team not getting a chance to win it all.  It continues to be a really good 1 or 2 loss team in a tough conference

Let's get a system that settled who the best is on the field to deserving teams.  I really can't imagine in an 8 or 12 team playoff system that you would ever probably have a 3 loss team on the field.  If that happens then great.  Again, that has never been the problem however.

Last year automatic qualifiers would have put a 3 loss number 12 ranked pac champion and a 2 loss number 11 ranked Pitt into the CFP. Number 6 Ohio state and number 8 Mississippi would have gotten by passed along with number 9 Oklahoma state and number 10 Michigan state.

Ok I can see why.  Keeping it at 4 does level the playing field chances among the P5.  Won't typically get 2 teams from one conference out of a field of 4.  Personally I prefer 8, winners of each 5 P5 conferences, 3 at large bids (1 G5).  Top 10/25 rankings are subjective anyway and shouldn't always matter.  Playoffs should be like a real championship tournament.

Why give special favors to P5conference champs and not the others?  If you aren’t good enough to look like top 8 there is no reason to have a special exemption.  The last thing we need is 3 or 4 loss teams taking up spots that 2 loss teams should have.

I base my price point on what my grocery store charges me...long story short, I am always pissed when I have to buy s#!t at a game.

I guess it makes sense that you carry it home, cook it, wash the dishes, pick up the wrappers off the floor and pay the disposal of it all at home.

That's not true though...we saw with our own eyes that Smothers is a capable QB and the common denominator, Frost, has us fair catch at the 6 and pass out of the endzone....same as with Martinez.

If you think smothers was capable you are wrong. His first half performance against Iowa and the resulting 2nd half after Iowa made their adjustments is indicative of what every defense would have done against him. He is just too much one dimensional in this offense. Nothing against him but no quarterback was likely to look better than an injured AM with that line and lack of running game.

Yes, it is. More than 150 people involved with the team knew, and someone spilled the beans to the wrong person, either on accident or in a, "don't tell anyone" way.

Occam's Razor is your friend. Baseless conspiracies are not.

The more than 150 is an understatement. I heard already the week after. He missed practice for the surgery either Tuesday or Wednesday. I can’t remember the exact timeline and it wasn’t like I heard it from any type of double secret insider. Just that nobody made it a big issue at the time.

    105. Ga. Southern -8.8    23.1 (96)   31.9 (104)

Six top-30 teams ahead of us.

There is quite a drop to the teams ranked below us.  And they are all expected to be pretty bad on offense.  We really need to win those six.  And hopefully grab a couple others.

Didn’t they get the memo?  We have a new quarterback.

Whose expectations are these? Official CFB prognosticators? Las Vegas?

The other way to look at this is that expectations for Nebraska have remained high, even a generation after the Glory Years.

Unreasonably high? I mean, me and Las Vegas just assumed Scott Frost could do four games better than Mike Riley with the same raw materials. For that matter, everyone figured Mike Riley finally had the pieces in place to build on his 9 win season in 2016. Bo Pelini had too many wins to show much win improvement, but every year his team was ranked higher in pre-season than it finished.

Hard to accept, but the media has had a pro-Nebraska bias for years.

I guess you are right. We are expecting too much from a Scott Frost team.

Sure, but don't you think it  would be "fair" to mention his hand issue amidst it all ... or do you report for CNN?  That thought, "statistics don't lie ... people do", seems to apply here.  Within your opinion doesn't seem to be fairness, that is, if one is truly wanting to offer "perspective".

And I noticed you didn’t mention the ankle and broken jaw injuries our quarterback had.

  9. 4 hours ago, BigRedN said:

Is that the "whole" story for him?  Do you believe you are giving an "honest" statement here?

Additionally, if true, is it your belief that he sucks and can't be coached up?

I’m just adding perspective to people who seem to believe our losing and turnover problems have disappeared because we have Casey instead of AM.

  10. I’m just not sure what to expect next year. We have so underplayed our talent the last four years. Between the schedule, special teams and red zone offense we should be worth 5 more wins next year. However I see the defense stepping back a bit. Not sure our offense will be as good between the 20s but we might score more.
Im not as sold on Whipple. If things go good it will probably work out for two years. Then breaking in another new guy. If things don’t go good early next year he might call it in. He has no commitment to this program and could have the same struggles with B1G defenses as SF is.

Honestly, I think the marketing department announcing this is best...kids these days want to go (play/work) for places that are pro-active in regards to things like this as opposed to silence

Really?  Haven’t ever seen a recruit or transfer state this as a reason to attend. We will probably have a top five class next year.

Here is an example 3 permanent games with 14.  In this example, Wisc and Iowa have the same 3 opponents, but Nebraska and Minnesota have a different 4th opponent.

You could keep the 4 western together, 4 central together, then have the other 6 each have different permanent games between them.

Seems some teams have it much easier. Northwestern, Purdue, Rutgers and Indiana to speak of.

I'm officially feeling much better about our outlook with this announcement. A lot of people had called this and thought he was just about the best guy for the job and I'd tend to agree.

This move shows that Frost & Alberts get it and seem to be on the same page about putting together tangible plans that build a good football program.

This seems a little presumptuous. This is not plan A or even plan B. To assume they “get it” seems without fact.

Serious question….  Is there a single qb in the portal that hasn’t gotten a “meh” from husker board.   I swear Mahomes could be in the portal and get picked apart here.

Well in their defense……he has thrown 3 more interceptions than AM did this year.

I’ve been following the flight tracker of a private plane that Frost has used in the past. Over the past few weeks it’s gone to Jamaica, Miami, Palm Springs, and St. Louis (yesterday). Maybe there’s a Rastafarian OC I’m unaware of?

That’s the same places Joe hausmans plane has gone

Frost interviewed Raiola and Jeff Quinn last Friday for OL coach.

Busch, Brumfield and now VT's James Shibest for ST.

Not that those are the only candidates.  Just ones that are in the mix.

    Nice insight.  Thanks

From the sounds of it, Frost and Martinez went into the meeting with (generally) both wanting Martinez to return.  But there was discussion about the path forward (looking at the transfer market, who the OC/QB coach would be, etc.) and Martinez wanted a guarantee that we wouldn't bring in a transfer.  I don't know all Frost's reasons but if nothing else given Martinez's current medical condition and who might be hired as OC, Frost wasn't willing to give that guarantee.  So Martinez decided to move on.

So there is quite a bit of room on either side to place the blame for who did or did not want him coming back.  But it doesn't really sound like "Frost wanted to move on" is probably entirely accurate.  More like "Frost wanted options."

Martinez did NOT ask for a guarantee.
