  2. I don't care about a splash hire, but his recent production is pretty poor. I know the excuse is that Oregon State doesn't have the talent, but the reality is that they still get a bunch of three-star guys. Their classes aren't great but they haven't been terrible either. This year he took a whole defense basically full of three stars and finished 76th in total D and 95th in scoring D.

  3. I'm inclined to think Pap calling the defense will be a good thing. Not because he's a great play-caller, but because Bo was so stubborn and rigid in his approach that the guys were thinking too hard, scared to fail and not attacking. Pap has nothing to lose and will let them attack and have fun. We might get burned a couple times but we might see some talent and play-making come out of the woodwork too.

  4. first meeting between riley and paps:

riley: so, mr. papuchis, what is your position on the staff?

paps: oh, i'm the defensive coordinator.

riley: so you call all the plays on Saturday?

    paps: no.

riley: oh... but you come up with the game plan?

    paps: uhh... no.

riley: so what exactly do you do?

paps: [holds up both hands showing taped fingers]

riley: wha... what are you doing? what is that?

paps: [runs out of the room]

  5. Eichorst was clear that we would be willing to spend whatever it took to get the best possible staff in place, yet we just hired a guy near the bottom of the Power 5 pay scale. Riley makes $1.5 million. It's probably safe to say he would be happy with $2.5 million, leaving huge funds available to hire assistants.

This really makes me wonder what Eichorst had in mind, and how much (if at all) he discussed with Riley regarding the assistants. If Eichorst is planning the usual route--letting Riley hire whoever he wants, without giving input--then he could easily hire most of his Oregon State staff, and we wouldn't have to spend anywhere near what we paid the last staff. If this is the case, Eichorst's resources quote doesn't really make sense.

So what's going on? Does Eichorst have a master plan regarding at least one of the assistant hires, or is he really just handing Riley a stack of cash and letting him figure it out in the next couple weeks? Riley's a good coach, but I don't know how great he is at hiring, and he will potentially be competing with Florida and Michigan. Apparently neither Frost nor Orgeron have even been contacted.

  6. Orgeron was keynote speaker at the Nebraska Coaches Clinic this last off-season, and apparently had nothing but praise for the program. He has also flat-out said in the last five hours that he would like to be a part of Riley's staff, so I assume they at least know each other. I don't think this is a pipe dream at all. I just hope Riley isn't overly loyal with his OSU assistants, thinking he should take them all along for loyalty alone. We need a great staff and we have the money to build it.

  7. I don't think Frost is unrealistic at all. His dream job is HC of Nebraska. Being the OC/AHC now would put him in perfect position to make that happen in 5-8 years. Plus we could easily offer 750,000 to him which would be a huge pay raise.

  8. My buddy works at LNK.

Here is the timeline of events he can confirm.

    NOV 29th - Perlman - LNK>DEN>SFO

    NOV 30th - BO FIRED

    DEC 1st - Eichorst - LNK>DEN>SFO

No return flights have been booked as of today.

Now that the Michigan job is open once again, I would bet they aren't there to see Jim Harbaugh (fine by me).

My money is on David Shaw being the next HC at Nebraska. His offense is EXACTLY what we need in the B1G West to compete with Minnesota & Wisconsin.

Aaaaaaaand it's kind of tough to recruit 5 star athletes to Stanford. Must be a pretty solid developer of talent.........

Why isn't this being discussed more?

Show me the flights that were used. Are you saying they are both in San Francisco still?
