  1. Does anyone know if his name is pronounced like "soup" or like "sour"?
  2. ND also lost a superstar WR.
  3. If he got an offer at this point, we'd all be baffled. Why is that? Seems perfectly fine to offer the kid.
  4. Doesn't the NCAA have exceptions for these kinds of situations when there is a coaching change? I thought that even if a player has signed his LOI, he can back out of it without penalty if there is a head coaching change. I'm pretty sure this happened this last month, though I forget the player and school. But I could be wrong about this. He hasn't signed his letter yet. He won't until Feb. 3rd, so he can take classes at USC or wherever this spring, sign an intent in Feb., and still go where he wants. Only Dec. graduating JUCO's have already signed.
  5. Ah yes, the ol' silent commit. (I'm not doubting anybody or their info, it's just that this happens every year right about now and on through signing day.)
  6. This is the perfect example why people need to start chilling out regarding this Staff and recruiting. You want to know why the staff cooled on a stud OT in Texas? Because he can't get himself qualified so why waste your time and effort on him when you have comparable or better targets, i.e. Moudy and Simek, to try go get. You're wasting your time. Nobody wants to hear about reason when rumor and innuendo make it more dramatic.
  7. Very impressive. I love team players.
  8. Maybe the reported 3 open schollies are due to Mitchell, Evans, and Cotton all taking greyshirts.
  9. Can we move the 05 recruiting class discussion to another thread? I'm sure there are several already started. So nobody knows the status of Mobley? He's got some good measurables, and we could use some receivers in this class. I like everybody we have in the class right now, so I wouldn't want to bump anyone. It's just too bad we're filling up already.
  10. From everything I've heard, Cotton has done quite well recruiting for the OL the last couple years. I think he's made most, if not all, of the in-home visits for the OL recruits.
  11. I think we'll be in the MNC mix next year. That doesn't mean we'll win it, but we'll be in the discussion. That's all you can really hope for each season. You never know when injuries, lucky bounces, and bad officiating will influence a game for or against NU. For the offense, I think we'll have a top 25 offense next season. I know that sounds crazy, but we've got 10 starters returning. 10! With 3 quality RB's, all with some experience, and an improving OL, we should have the running game next season many were predicting us to have this year. Also, the WR's and TE's look pretty solid and could be special if Paul and McNeil excel and another WR and TE is at least solid. The QB position could be good, bad, or even ugly, but I think it'll be decent due to health, experience, and an improved OL. For the defense, I don't think we'll be as dominating as this year, no matter what Bo says. But I still think we'll be top 10 or 15. That's still a really good defense. Losing Suh, Dillard, Asante, and O'Hanlon will definitely hurt. But our DB's look excellent and the DL should still be strong with Crick, Allen, and Meredith. The real question for me will be whether the LB's can emerge and play even close to how Dillard did. And how many running vs passing teams we'll face. Teams might find some success running, but passing teams could be in trouble against those corners.
  12. Ding ding ding!! If you're drafting first, then you suck so bad you need more than just the top pick. Almost every year the top spot could be traded for more picks including other 1st round selections for much better value than a single pick. The Rams should seriously consider some team in the middle trading their 1st and 2nd this year and the 1st next year for that top spot. But as for the OP, Suh is about as solid a #1 overall pick as I've seen. Only premiere LT are less risky IMO, and there doesn't seem to be a truly great one in this draft. I'd be surprised if Suh was awesome in his rookie year while he adjusts, but he'll be solid until he picks it up and really starts to come on late that year and after.
  13. That and the fact that TTech gets away with more flagrant holding than any other team I've ever seen. I'm still not sure why the wide splits mean that they can tackle the opposing D-line, but that's officiating in the B12 for you.
  14. Utah and Fresno St. seem to be good at finding hidden talent. Or maybe just developing it.
  15. FYI: We had a B12 crew for the VT game this season. The previous year in Lincoln was an ACC crew.
  16. Let the NFL be the sad football league that doesn't try to win them all - I'm looking at you Indianapolis!!! College football is about the game itself - and trying to win that game. If NU ever played not to win, for any reason, I'd want everybody from the AD on down fired. Spring and fall practice are for sorting out the QB position. The games are for winning. All of my thoughts can best be summed up by: "Not the victory but the action; Not the goal but the game; In the deed the glory"
  17. I think Paul and Marlowe will do the kickoffs again. Paul will do the punts and set himself up as a return specialist in the NFL. It is just speculation but if you look at some of the best backs that have come thru NU, the really good ones leave a year early. Ahman Green-Left early Lawerence Phillips-Left early Mike Rozier-Got a late start in the program and dominated. I think he stayed for his senior season because he was on the greatest team ever assembled in college football. Without USFL, that team would've had Rozier, Fryar and Steinkuler going 1,2 3 in the NFL draft and Turner Gill running that beast. He set himself up for the Heisman and no 1 pick in the draft. Go back and look at his stats thru the first half. 150 yards before he got hurt in the 3rd quarter. Point is, he had the talent to go pro after his junior year. If Braylon gets behind a stud line and develops into a star, it is not a stretch to see backs declare early and go pro. I don't want to see great backs leave early but the lure of NFL dollars could come into play. I read something this year that if Helu has a great game in SD, he could declare and go late first or early second round. Very much like Brandon Jackson. Pro scouts were high on his performance against VAT early in the season. Almost 200 yards and the line was a dominating one this year. It is a complete stretch to project anything on this new recruit, but just watching his junior tape, it is exciting. It states on Rivals his is 4.4 but he stated in his radio interview that he has never been timed in the 40???? Pro backs are 4.4 but run at 225 lbs and more. Wow. So you're projecting a high school RB who hasn't played a down of college ball to leave early for the NFL because 2 of the best backs NU has ever had left early? Out of all the great backs we've had, just 2 have left that I'm aware of - and they both had ulterior motives. Phillips left due to legal issues, and Green left because TO retired. The recruiting hype and ridiculous expectations are simply amazing.
  18. With all of our RB's back next season, I hope Heard redshirts. Every player benefits from time in a college weight/nutrition program and he can get the plays down and be even more ready as a RS frosh after Helu leaves.
  19. They are fairly young along the DL as well. Plus they have 2 non-qualifiers from last year that should be coming in as well. Ty Phillips and Richardson. Phillips is a possible for spring but most likely he will be in over the summer and Richardson is scheduled for next January. As for this years DL, of the 5 DE's that saw good time, there was one SR, one Soph and 3 RSFRESH. On the inside it was 1 SR, 1 JR & 2 Soph. Plus Aldon Smith (RS FRESH) plays on the inside as well from his DE spot on passing downs. Another thing to remember is Mu plays mostly with 2 LB's and 1 hy-brid. So a bigger safety will ussually play that hy-brid spot. Thus a bigger need for DB over LB's. That and overall our LB core is still young also. MU has one of the youngest, if not the youngest roster in major college football this year. Whole lotta Freshmen and Sophs on our 2 deep If they were non-qualifiers, I think they need 2 years of JUCO before they can get back in. I'm not sure if it's an AA or some number of credit hours or what. Anybody know for sure?
  20. Like VT has used when they've had a running QB like Vick and Taylor. And Florida has had since Meyer got there. Nevada also runs a spread variant with a powerful running game (led NCAA in rushing). I'm sure there are more examples. As for Turner, I always like a QB who can scramble or run. He needs to be a passer first, but a QB making plays with his feet always stresses a defense.
  21. I believe ESPN and Scout are working together on recruiting. Or they used to or something. So ESPN and Scout agreeing might not mean anything.
