Nebraska Cornhuskers College Football Preview 2023

Not yet, Husker fans. It’s coming, but give it just a wee bit longer before the success finally returns. The world is a better place when the schools with superpower football bloodlines are great. USC, Michigan, Texas, Tennessee, Notre Dame - college football needs programs that have a rich history of success, especially when there’s a powder keg base of generational fans just waiting to explode.

Welcome to Nebraska. Husker fans aren’t asking to party like it’s 1995. For now, they just want a team that can show a glimmer of hope that the wins and success might be returning again. It’s been six LONG years without a winning season, and the weirdest-worst part about it all was that Nebraska wasn’t totally awful over the run. Over and over and over and over again it seemed like a moment was there when just one play or right break could turn the corner, and every time … yoink.

Now the six-time defending national champion at inventing new and creative ways to lose close games has a coach who might be able to change all of that. It should’ve worked with Scott Frost, didn’t, and now Matt Rhule takes over as a prize hire to restore the glory. But again, be patient. The guy is being paid more than $9 million a season over the next eight years to get this right. Rhule took over Temple in 2014 - and went 2-10 and 6-6 before leading the way to two straight ten-win seasons and an American Athletic Conference Championship. He left for Baylor when it was in reboot mode after one of the most horrific scandals in college football history - and went 1-11 and 7-6 before guiding the team to an 11-win season in 2019 with an appearance in the Big 12 Championship.

(By the way, Baylor didn’t beat anyone who was that great in Rhule’s three years, and the Carolina Panthers are paying over $30 million for him to not be their head coach, but let’s not yuck the yum because …) College football will be more fun when Nebraska is terrific, and everything is banking on Rhule to make that happen.

Over or under? Predicting Nebraska's 2023 win-loss record

Summer is officially here, but in Nebraska, it’s never too early to start thinking ahead to football season.

The consensus Las Vegas projected win total for the Huskers is right around six for Matt Rhule’s debut in Lincoln. Too high? Too low? Or just right?

HuskerOnline’s Sean Callahan, Steven Sipple, and Robin Washut went through and predicted each game on NU’s 2023 schedule. We give our best guesses on what to expect this fall…

    https://www.on3.com/teams/nebraska-cornhuskers/news/over-or-under-predicting-nebraskas-2023-win-loss-record/

    Sean Callahan: 7-5
    Steven Sipple: 6-6
    Robin Washut: 7-5

The link has a game by game breakdown with their expectations. Can't say I really disagree, and I'd probably be pretty happy with 7-5.

    College football's post-spring SP+ rankings and takeaways

The transfer portal is slowing down, media days are around the corner and with all due respect to Week 0 -- I love it dearly, just as much as all the other weeks -- we're officially 100 days from Sept. 2, the first real Saturday of the 2023 college football season.

It seems like a pretty good time, then, to get up to date on the numbers. Since February's initial 2023 SP+ release, we've seen a number of transfers and big moves, and I've been able to better update returning production figures to account for teams' official roster releases. (Not many had released full rosters in early February.) We haven't seen much movement at the very top of the rankings, but there's plenty to talk about.

Matt Rhule experienced the lingering power of the Nebraska brand during his three-year run as the head coach at Baylor, when assistants bearing the school logo would gain entry to some of the top programs and best prospects in Texas nearly a generation after the program’s last breath of national relevance.

"The Nebraska ‘N’ means something," Rhule told USA TODAY Sports. "It means something across the world."

For a self-described "developmental coach" known for his building and rebuilding projects at Temple and with the Bears, Rhule’s decision to become the Cornhuskers’ next coach represents a dramatic leap into one of the most high-pressure, well-resourced positions in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

Multiple attempts at replicating the program’s decades-long run as college football royalty have yielded increasingly bigger misfires, none more painful than the recent four-plus seasons under former coach Scott Frost. The school’s search for Frost’s replacement zeroed in on Rhule, who was fired in October by the Carolina Panthers less than midway through his third season.

Now, for the first time as a college head coach, Rhule has taken the reins of a program with three coveted assets: an extensive support system, a rich history and immense expectations. After the bitter disappointment of the five-season Frost era, these expectations have roared back to life in the past six months.
