  1. true, if we had to do it all over again, Solich would have been given 2 more years. although he was a poor recruiter and had a lack of imagination, he was slowly making changes here.....water over the damn though, so speculation is irrelevant, but i will say, callahan's style was a total mismatch.

I was OK, not thrilled, with cally. Offense did its job for the most part, but he was WAY too loyal to cosgrove. After a couple of seasons, or at least 1/2 way through last season, callahan should have fired him

Who said you have no chance? Maybe someone did, but not me. They play the game, so everyone has a chance. I think your chance, if put to me now with what we know now, is 20-25%. I say the chance the game is close is more like 80%. Lots will change, but I see no cakewalk, and if we don't keep you down early, we could very much regret it later on the road. But I am not the Lord, I gotta wait like everyone else to see how it shakes out... I can tell you, in 2005 I knew we would break that streak, all of the real fans thought we would, that was the one year your fans rolled down after decades of picking up tickets outside at face or below and all of a sudden they could not get a ticket. For you all, it may not seem that noticeable, but we are now a very competitive program. We built a huge new football center this offseason. We have a good coach. Our talent is much deeper. We can be competitive with everyone we play. For people watching all the games (and I do) for manhy years, there is a major change underway. Not saying we are the Huskers in the form of some sort of dynasty, but things have changed a lot for us. We are actually a good program. I'll take that....

Yeah, it is now blocking the view from my son's frat's favorite tailgate spot on the hill.

On the other hand it doesn't block their drinking :cheers

  4. Or as Cy would say

I considered myself a patient man when I waited 4 12 years for Callahan McCarney to turn this team around....now I gotta wait another 3-4?? A man's patience can only go so far. When will the waiting stop!

Having said that, I'm willing to give Pelini Chicklets Kismit Chitlins uh, the new guy as much time as he needs. I like his style and have the utmost confidence in him.

  5. Its not like Neb has a great OOC schedule either. Outside of Va Tech

you have 3 creampuffs to beat up on. I think NU could be favored against Va Tech too, so.... yeah....

If you want to put down this year's Husker OOC schedule, go to the Pitt Panther message board and leave a message for the guy who made it. For future scheduling, we put our trust in TO

Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Criteria

Determination of the Award will be based upon the on-field performance of the nominees, as well as their character. To be a Golden Arm Award Winner, these quarterbacks must demonstrate good citizenship off the field, and do their best to maintain the ideals of good character, morals, and values that Johnny Unitas upheld in his lifetime and career.

To be eligible for this Award, all candidates MUST be completing their college eligibility this season to be eligible for The Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. Candidates are judged upon character, citizenship, scholastic achievement, leadership qualities, and athletic accomplishments. They MUST also preserve a positive public image above reproach by avoiding legal issues or other types of scandal.

    Don't tell me Colt isn't a Sr.

    Colt is a Jr.

Nice research on the qualifications for the award. I said before IF that was the only qualification, it was a joke, but now that I am enlightened as to the off-the-field requirements, I will say that this is good for Joe.

But shouldn't we expect, like Bo says, that college athletes show "character, citizenship, scholastic achievement, leadership qualities" anyway as part of the "job requirement"?

And in light of the off-the-field requirements PLEASE don't tell me any Miami Hurricane QBs won the award. :thumbs

  7. Joe Ganz is a candidate for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.

not bad for only playing a few games

    Or Ressing

Works out to be about 20% of starting QBs in NCAA division whatever-they-are-calling-it-this-year.

Didn't look it up but might be 40-50% of all returning starting QBs

Just did a quick spot check on the internet - these are all seniors!

So 100% of all returning starting senior QBs?

If so, what an honor :sarcasm :sarcasm :sarcasm

  8. Yup, best record wins, then head to head. My hawks were M last year, and will be N this year, schedule wise for sure, and maybe record wise as well. We were 7-1 and we North Co-champs, but since we lost head to head to Mizzou (both were 7-1), they got to go to the title game, and rightfully so.

But what if you beat Mizzou along with every other north team, and yet Mizzou still got the recognition as the best team in the north division?

  9. Hmmm...how many California guys were on the roster of National Champion LSU....1? How about their opponent Ohio State....1?

Wow...that state must be loaded with "local talent"..... <_<

Uhh... Louisiana and Ohio ARE loaded with local talent. Mind you, they don't have as much of it as the big 3 (California, Texas, and Florida), but they're both amidst the leaders of the second tier (somewhere between 4th and 10th nationally every year).

    Check last season's production:

Louisiana - 11 four star recruits, 26 three star

Ohio - 3 five star recruits, 14 four star, 33 (possibly more, the list cuts off at 50) three star

Now let's compare that to Nebraska:

1 five star, 1 four star, 5 three star. That's it. Seven Nebraska players that would be seen as viable prospects by most programs in the country as opposed to 37 for Louisiana and 50+ for Ohio.

Oh, and if your intended point was only that California doesn't have any local talent... uhh, well... I'd like to direct you to the recent successes of USC as well as the fact that last year the state produced 40 four and five star recruits. Just because they didn't happen to go to LSU or Ohio (who as noted above, have plenty of top shelf recruits in state to keep themselves successful) doesn't mean that California doesn't crank out top quality athletes better than almost any other region in the country.

My apologies for poo pooing on your sarcasm parade, but if you're going to make a comment like that you should probably check the statistics beforehand to make sure that your implicit point is actually a valid one. :thumbs

A story I read in the Lincoln paper back in the early 90's:

The writer was interviewing one of the people who assigns stars to HS players. The writer mentioned that TO was interested in a certain player. The guy said, "Oh, yeah?" Walked over to the board and raised the guy up something like 6 slots. Granted this was when rating was in its infancy, but it shows the arbitrary nature of the job. On the other hand 7 vs 50 does show a HUGE gap, even if they are off 50% (flip a coin)

  10. Currently the division champion is the team with the best conference record. I can't remember any controversy over which team should go to the conference championship game, but I see a possible problem with the unbalanced schedule.

Take a North division team. Let's call it N for the sake of argument. The team blasts every other North division team by at least 25 points. But they play Texas, OU and TT. The team easily beats TT at home, but lose to Texas and OU at there place by less than 3 pts in multiple overtimes. Conference record: 6-2 and also undefeated OOC, so a 10-2 record.

Another team from the North, lets randomly pick M, loses big to N, but barely squeaks by all the other north teams. They play Baylor, OSU and AM, barely winning each game. Conference record: 7-1. Winning 1 OOC, so an 8-4 record.

Which team should represent the North? Current rules as I understand it would be M. But are they the best team in the north? Unfortunately these days, what would ABC think? I think the best record in your division should go to the championship game. Tie breakers: head to head, common other division opponent, then conference record.

    Thoughts?

  11. Kansas' 2008 Schedule

    Florida International- Win

    Louisiania Tech- Win

    at South Florida-Loss

Sam Houston State- Win ( Is Rhett Bomar still their?)

    at Iowa State- Win

    Colorado- Loss

    at Oklahoma- Loss

    Texas Tech- Loss

    Kansas State- Win

    at Nebraska- Loss

    Texas- Loss

    Missouri ( Kansas City)- Loss

    Prediction 5-7

Loss of Talib and the tackle Collins really hurts as well as some key recievers from last years squad. Plus they road an easy schedule last year to the BCS where they beat my beloved Hokies.

I think maybe you're a bit too negative on the Jayhawks. I think the South Florida game could go either way, but I don't think they lose at home to CU. I think the TT game could go either way with the win swaying towards KU as again it is a home game. Right now, I think you have to say they have the edge in the NU game as well even though it's being played in Lincoln. I think they will definitely lose to OU, Texas, and Mizzou. I think they easily could be a 3-5 loss team in 2008, but I would be astonished if they lost 7 games this year.

Looks like last year, doesn't matter what we do on the field. If we do well this year, everyone will be "down". Never mind being the only team to Beat A&M on the road, Va tech at a neutral site, CU in Boulder (ask OU, not easy), Oklahoma State on the road, K-State in Manhattan, 7-1 in the Big 12.... Facts Don't Matter, we did lose 2 good Junior players and a great defensive coordinator, but not much is changing. If Reesing is Healthy, I look forward to another years of excuses about another good KU team (Not banking on anywhere near 12 wins, but I see the deulsions are all in the negative direction, and I have a few hater bets out already...)

Just saw on Kansas City TV that a defensive lineman quit the team because of a bad back and a cornerback was kicked off the team for "violating team policy" (which is often code for 3rd offense positive drug test, though I have no knowledge that this is true in this case) So Jayhawks are down 4 underclassmen in addition to __?__ seniors no longer elligible

Let me go ahead and set the record straight:

Two Kansas University football players have left the program, the school announced Tuesday.

Senior defensive lineman Todd Haselhorst said he left the program for "health reasons." Junior cornerback Anthony Webb was dismissed for violation of team policy, according to KU football spokesman Mike Strauss.

Haselhorst said: "I've always had stomach issues since I've been here. I've been throwing up every day during conditioning. It's that and I've been having back pain recently and I decided to hang it up."

Haselhorst said he plans to attend classes at KU during the fall semester to complete the 12 credits he needs to graduate. He said he will attend all home football games "to support the team."

"I've had a lot of fun in the program and they've given me some great memories," Haselhorst said. "It's a great bunch of guys and great coaches and there is no doubt in my mind they'll have success again this year if they do the right things, if they practice hard, work hard and do everything 100 percent all the time, like we did last year."

Here is the deal haters-CB Anthony Webb doesn't even play and was barried on the depth chart and Todd Haselhorst sucks. He wasn't listed as the starter according to the coaches because a Redshirt freshman (Richard Johnson Jr.) beat him out. No worries from Jayhawk nation. This is for the best.

Not hatin' - I just repeated (almost word for word) what the KC TV sports guy said. You gave a lot more detail. If I was hatin' I would have posted the unmentionalble things that happened to the stuffed Jayhawk doll at Pinkel's golf charity that was aired on the same news broadcast. (I didn't know you could waterboard a stuffed toy)

  12. Reesing is a solid QB, but I wasen't blown away with how he played in the two games that I watched (Missouri and Virginia Tech). I know he had way better games that year, but you are talking about those two games as the toughest two that your team played all year. I respect Kansas but they will not go 10-2 this year. 5-7 may be a little harsh, but since the Big 12 is probably going to be two BCS teams this year, Kansas will not get one over Missouri or Oklahoma. Missouri deserved a bid more than your team last year. Heck, I wasen't so sure if my team deserved a bid until I learned that instead of preparing for the bowl, we were playing around on Jetski's and goofing off. If you don't think I'm serious, play us in a few years when Glennon is gone, and Tyrod Taylor is not a freshman. I would rather play Kansas in a few years instead of the home and home with Kansas State. Except for in basketball, our team couldn't stay on the floor with your team.

Well, those 2 games you refer to Resing in were vs. 2 of the top 8 teams in the country, and he was a first time starter and a Sophmore. I would look for improvement in those sorts of games. Also, he was hurt pretty good vs. MU, and less, but still hurt vs VA tech, his speed was way down from normal (which he needs to escape). We probably won't outdo MU this year, almost everyone back and they really good, but that is why they play the games. I think in 2 years it is our time, when we will be at our best. No question Reesing can get better, but he was pretty good for a Sophomore in his first year starting, as he was a redshirt last year who got his shirt yanked and was thrown out there (Beat the Buffs for us)...

Anybody else notice that the Hokies and Jayhawk fans "flock" the the NEBRASKA discussion board to talk smack to each other?

  13. How many top 25 teams does mizzou play this year? KU? I think NU's schedule is very tough, and probably the toughest of any team in the North Div.

I would have to say that Colorado has the toughest schedule of any team of the North Division:

West Virginia, Florida State, Texas, Kansas, and Missouri...just to name a few of the really tough teams. Seems like a tough schedule to me!

Throw in Montana State and it would be a killer. :rollin

I'm going to be a KS fan for at least a couple more seasons just because of my cousin's Son and Daughter competing there, but also because it makes our conference stronger.

They could be better next season and still have a worse record..I'm guessing 3-4 losses prior to Bowl season.

I hope they continue to improve in the long run.

My SON goes to KU (in state tuition and academic scholly) and WE BOTH are Husker fans forever. Three years ago he went to the game in red body paint. (Last year he was fortunately out of town)

  16. I will say outside of USF KU's non conference schedule is weak...but good god!! Have you seen the rest of KU's schedule!?! I think you're a little too hard on KU.

KU plays @OU, Texas, Texas Tech, @Nebraska, Missouri (@Arrowhead) and @ South Florida. Several websites have the Kansas schedule as the toughest in the nation. You may want to revise your comments. 3 cupcakes isn't bad, compared to what they'll face. NU's non conference scheduleis by no means harder than KU's. South Florida would beat V-Tech by 2 TD's. Virginia Tech LOST EVERYBODY from last year-accept of course they're crappy QB's. I think Nebraska will beat them.

He was only comparing non-conference opponents - the ones you can pick each year. And Mangino thought he was getting 4 cupcakes

I think NU used to have the best formula. One fairly easy, one traditional power and a couple of BCS conference moderates. I think NU is returning to this. Teams that overload their schedules with perenial powers are crazy. I have no problems with weak teams following the Bill Snyder method - he was successful scheduling Division III, high school and coed flag football teams, as long as they up grade their opponents as they become stronger and not whine when they get no respect if they don't up grade.

And remember the schedules (except for teams that duck out) are set years in advance. You don't control who your conference opponents will be. But there was a strong indication that SMU, UMass, directional Washington would be extremely weak. Even Nevada only recently has become a moderate challenge.

  17. 3 Shots?

I was only 3 at the time, but I could've sworn the Warren Commision maintained there was only one shooter.

Did Lee Harvey shoot all 3 shots?

Gny. Sgt. Hartman, Drill Instructor: "Anybody know who Lee Harvey Oswald was? Private Snowball?"

Snowball: "Sir, he shot Kennedy, sir!"

Gny. Sgt. Hartman, Drill Instructor: "That's right. And do you know how far away he was?"

Snowball: "Sir, he was pretty far. From that Book Suppository Building, sir!" :rollin

Gny. Sgt. Hartman, Drill Instructor: "Alright, knock it off."

  18. Callahan speaks!

He did NOT admit he needed media training. A TEAM OFFICIAL said he needed media training. He might still be delusional in that he "is an excellent coach in every area" or whatever BS he said.

How many people after six years at job need additional training to do one of the most important parts of their jobs?
