  1. The rumor mill is buzzing that Ozigbo has locked up the 3rd back spot in NO.

I just watched their last game and he was getting extra yards after contact and making guys flat out miss and thought to myself that guy definitely deserves to be on an NFL roster.  He looked really good with what he had to work and with his opportunities when given the ball imo.

I am not sure how much special teams he played at Nebraska, but it helps a guy like him if he can be on coverage teams.  The last few guys on the roster have to be able to contribute on special teams.

  2. Coach Osborne dropped an interesting conference expansion nugget at this morning's Big Red Today when asked about Nebraska's shuffle from the Big 12 to the Big 10.

I'm pretty sure this was heavily rumored, and maybe it's common knowledge now, but he said the Big 12 South had "agreed in principle" to move to the Pac 12, and that this was one of the biggest reasons we had shopped around for a different conference.

@Redux IMO, I don't believe so--one thing that was appealing about the B1G and that we pride ourselves on is that DoNU is pretty good, academically, and we have been looking for some time to improve on that. :cowbell:

We've improved our academics in spades with the B1G, and it's gotten the notice of schools like Oklahoma that are in a similar situation. Unless Oklahoma has a course change in their future goals re: academics, academic improvement via the B1G is why Oklahoma to the B1G down the road will have a very strong likelihood (even though their idiot fans want the SEC ).

Joining the SEC would have had an adverse effect on our academics--we wouldn't have partnerships with the few Big XII schools that did happen to remember they were a school first, and the SEC doesn't have any sort of academic consortium (or any sort of inter-conference academic programs of note). At best, our academics in the SEC would be moribund.

Now, IIRC, the Pac-12 (and the Pac-10) did have something similar, but not as encompassing, as the B1G's academic consortium. So to respond to your question, perhaps we could have been moving buddies with Colorado to the Pac-12 instead? :dunno

    3. Redux

      Redux

I don't think the PAC 10 would have been very appealing to Nebraska, geographically speaking it's further than most the B1G trips and they don't really fit into either division very well.  A yearly match with USC may be appealing but still.

With as hot as the SEC was in 2010-2011 an invite would have been pretty hard to turn down.  Joining a footprint where recruiting is almost on cruise control and you get national love in the form of rankings without doing anything.

    4. VectorVictor

      VectorVictor

@Redux I agree, a Pac-10 invite wouldn't have been appealing, but it still would have been better than our current situation in the Big XII (though not by much). And don't forget matches with UCLA, or Oregon, or Washington (all teams that were certainly competent at the time).

And I bet it would have been hard to turn a SEC invite down...if we had someone other than Dr. Tom at the helm. IMO, folks like Dr. Tom are quick to remember that Nebraska is more than football, and I don't think he cares for the dirty pool the SEC willingly plays in.

Now, if it's an Eichorst, or maybe even a Moos making the decision back then, I'd agree. But not with Dr. Tom at the helm.

  3. #1stWorldProblemRant: a lot of people in the 55+ demo must not know what AirPods are. People at my work (including complete strangers) will try to strike up polite conversations with me when I have them in.

I mean, it's obvious they're headphones, right? Which comes with the innate understanding that the person is probably listening to something, yeah? Is it because they're hard to see? What other reason would a stranger have for trying to tell me why they're tired after walking for 15 minutes on a treadmill in the company gym??? This kind of stuff happens far too often.

And the worst is when I'm actually having a phone conversation on them. People can hear me talking and they try to interrupt. It's like they think I'm talking to myself.

@huKSer We tried to take some but most of the actual fighting was being done behind a bunch of vehicles and down a small berm about 100 feet away so it was tough to see much on video. We thought it was best to stay back until police showed up, and then (to my total surprise ) everything seemed to calm down when they did.

  6. This weekend's Austrian Grand Prix was the best F1 race so far this season. Incredibly entertaining. Verstappen's abysmal start combined with a remarkable overtake on Lap 69 was so much fun. And although I've always been a Hamilton fan, it was nice to see a different race winner outside of the Silver Arrows.

  9. I don't blame Vettel for being pissed about the 5 second penalty in this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix that cost him the win, and there probably wasn't anything he could do to avoid the situation once it happened, but I feel like people are glossing over the fact that he made a mistake. He wouldn't have been in a position to get penalized if he hadn't lost control of his car. It doesn't really matter if it was the tires or something else - that's racing. People get penalized in sports all the time for stuff they didn't intend to do, but if you do make a mistake, that's kind of on you, Seb.

    1. ZRod

      ZRod

Yeah, but mistakes are a part of racing, and at a certain point you have to let the race have a natural progression without too much outside influence.

I see both sides of it. If you are an Indy or NASCAR fan the penalty looks dumb and the incident is just a normal part of racing. If you're an F1 guy, the penalty is technically by the book but a little harsh for a no harm no foul incident. He pinched Hamilton, but it wasn't like he was totally out of control. You should still be able to defend your position safely.

I couldn't even watch the race because our local ABC station showed the stupid White Sox game.

    3. VectorVictor

      VectorVictor

@jsneb83 next time that happens, try the ESPN app. Happens all the time in the DFW area when F1 is on the ABC affiliate and they choose to show something else instead because of...reasons.

As for Vettel, I do have a hard time sympathizing with him when he was on the right end of these decisions a couple of times during his run a few years ago. Now that the shoe is on the other foot, you're going to storm around like a petulant child and switch the place markers in front of the cars around?

This was all because of Vettel's mistake, and I really have a problem with him returning to the racing line when he completely went off the course. He even admitted he saw Hamilton in his mirror on the broadcast, and that admission has to factor in to whether or not one views this as an 'out of control'/racing incident or Vettel trying to get away with something there.

Well that makes sense. You just don't see much crossover with Vikings, Bears and Packers fans. The ole black and blue division typically stays pretty true to form and usually seems pretty aligned to the city. I've spent some time in Milwaukee and ran into both Packers and Bears fans. There's some pretty strong feelings between those fan bases and I've found Vikings fans to be the third spoke in that wheel. Not sure there's another 3 teams anywhere that all really sort of despise two other franchises seemingly equally. It's kind of a neat and unique phenomenon imo. That's why it seemed odd to me to like 3 Chicago teams and then Minnesota. FWIW, I was a big Green Bay fan as a kid and still have a soft spot for them. But I also loved Fran Tarkenton and Walter Peyton. Sweetness is probably my all time favorite NFL player. But growing up in Nebraska, I kind of had pick a team because none were geographically natural.

    3. Enhance

      Enhance

Yeah the really tough thing is that as I've gotten older my Vikings fandom has sort of become less. I'm much more of a fan of the NFL in general these days; but, my fandom for other Chicago teams has sort of developed this affinity for the Bears. It now feels complicated because part of me thinks 'well, you like all other Chicago teams, it may as well be the Bears, too' while the other part of me is telling myself 'you've liked the Vikings forever AND Chicago is a divisional foe, you twit.'

I guess how I would describe it now is I hope the Bears do well and I don't actively root against them, and then when the Vikings/Bears play, I sort of pretend it's not happening lol.

Yeah thats going to be a problem without storm drains.  The pipe that broke a few years ago that flooded your driveway.....was it a city main water line that burst? If so go back to them and explain the problem.....maybe they can help you bring in new dirt for the places your lot sunk. Cities always have a stash of dirt and they have the loaders to move it.  You might end up planting new grass or sod etc.

Did the rush of water undercut your driveway making it sink down? If so you have due cause to get the city to fix that as well.

@Enhance Normally I would agree with the take that you need to do enough to not let one flubbed call cost you the game. However, this particular non-call was worse than that. Just the fact of how blatant and obvious it was coupled with only 1:41 left in the game. It really was a game changer. They've got every right to bitch and moan for a long long time. But no, legal action to overturn it or re-start the game from that point is ridiculous. Sometimes bad calls have terrible consequences. I still have no idea what that ref, who was staring right at it, thought he saw. It's too bad with all the time they waste on replays that they couldn't have reviewed this one and got it right.

    3. Enhance

      Enhance

@JJ Husker And I get that viewpoint but, so long as we allow humans to participate in sports (), we are susceptible to these kinds of mistakes. A lot of people seem to want their cake and eat it on this situation - they want to be able to control this specific issue while largely being OK with other elements in their control/out of their control that they perceive to have not had as big of an impact, even if that's not wholly true.

I mean, people vilify players for dropping passes, missing field goals, throwing picks, getting penalties in key moments, etc. You name it. It's all part of the game and they can all cost you a game. But, a referee screws up and that's worthy of saying the Super Bowl is 'tainted' or we need to replay that part of the game. I just don't get that reaction.
