  1. And Cody Green's run looks even more impressive from that angle.
  2. Agreed. The offense was pretty vanilla last night. Not a whole lot of variety in play calling. There was a lot of zone read, PA roll outs, couple shovel passes, and then a few long balls.
  3. Good question. We do have a bit of a hybrid offense, but in order for it to be mimicked it needs to be consistently successful, and we have only really had this type of offense for two years. We use the shotgun to open up the run game and we go under center for more of a west coast style passing game. We also like to integrate a lot of zone read. We'll have to wait and see. I know there was some talk that Bo had always wanted to motion over to a Florida style offense, but because I don't watch Florida a lot I don't really know what that is like down there.
  4. I think VaTech still has the edge thanks to home field advantage and I still think they have a good defense and great special teams. But, that idea was shaken a bit last night, going by the fact that Alabama is definitely not an explosive offense they ripped VaTech's defense for nearly 500 yards.
  5. Yeah, as was already stated, FAU was running a heavy protection scheme so there wasn't a lot to expect from a four man pass rush. I would add for the dislikes the D had a few problems with missed assignments/losing containment. Penalties were also a bit of a problem. But both of those are not uncommon for a first game. For sure. Penalties were a concern, and the false starts definitely need to be shored up. There will always been some first game issues though, like you said. I'm just glad we didn't get any personal fouls called against last night.
  6. Yeah, I noticed that as well. He is probably really regretting the decisions he made right now.
  7. As I posted in another thread and a few mentioned in this one, I think there is still some work to do. Holding a team to 3 points is great, but giving up 358 yards isn't so hot. Granted the points on the scoreboard is the most important thing, we still need to cut down on total yards to give them fewer chances. Even though the game plan didn't call for a huge pass rush, I still expected more from the front four on defense. I expected a double team here or there to open up a sack or two for somebody on the defensive line, but that didn't happen. Credit Rusty Smith for keeping his composure for most of the game. I think the secondary looked great, minus one blown assignment that cost us 38 yards (even though I think that Fullback was Lawrence's responsibility). Linebackers looked solid, and think we have a lot to look forward to with four more years with these guys. Overall, I'd give them a B- to a B. I think some blackshirts are deserved, but only at a few spots as of right now.
  8. You are absolutely right about that last line in your post. The way Cody Green runs and strides, he makes me think of Vince Young. I think our QB situation is in great hands. I think Zac Lee gives us the best chance to win because of his age and experience. Don't forget, this kid was a championship quarterback at a lower division before he transferred to Nebraska, and that is saying something. I think Green will still be prone to Freshman mistakes every now and then, mistakes that I think will be few and far between for Zac.
  9. Positive win for Husker nation last night. I saw quite a few things I liked, and a few didn't. I narrowed it down to three (from each category) I felt was most important. Things I liked 1) Zac Lee can play, and Helu can shine. For putting up 152 yards on 16 carries, one has to be impressed. Now, if they can both just stay healthy, then this season can be something to brag about. 2) The secondary. With the exception of that blown coverage assignment of FAU's fullback leading to a 38 yard pass, the secondary looked very impressive. They were flying to the ball, creating multiple turnovers, and really playing great coverage for most of the game. They bent, but never broke, and that was something reassuring to see for Husker faithful. 3) Turnovers. We got 3 of them, and could have had 5. If Matt O'Hanlon's first interception wasn't negated by a Jared Crick penalty and if Larry Asante had held onto the ball he caught, we could have had one of the most impressive Husker turnover performances in a long time. But, those 3 turnovers were still very helpful, and 2 of 3 led to touchdowns. Things I didn't like 1) Dropped passes. I counted four in the first half alone, which really showcased the knock we took once Swift and Pederson left. It was only the first game, and Zac Lee did have a couple of wayward throws on some of those dropped passes, but if you get your hands on it that's all on you. 2 of the 4 dropped passes I counted were great throws that were just dropped. 2) D-Line pass rush. Thought to be a strength, they really didn't perform as I think many of us expected them too. Some of that was due to Rusty Smith, of course. Even if he didn't have a great game statistically, he still knows how to run the offense in a productive way allowing him to get off clean throws like it is second nature to him. But, I really thought I would see more pressure from the front four defensively on passing plays. Bo did admit his game plan didn't call for a lot of blitzing, so it is possible a lot of favorable matchups just didn't happen because of that. 3) The "pipeline" had some difficulties. In the first quarter alone, it seemed like every pass play that didn't intend for Zac Lee to roll out, ended up making him roll out. It appeared that he was running for his life on quite a few throws during the game. The protection is going to need to get better if they want to be successful in running the ball and protecting Zac Lee this year. So that is that. Hopefully we can expand on the good things we did for next week's game and fix the problems that were most noticeable.
  10. I think it's just because when somebody uses a home video camera to record a video from the stands, the mic pickup is going to get the sound closest to the camera, which means the video sound is going to get drowned out a bit. It could have been louder though, and I kinda wish they would have stopped at the entrance onto the field for a bit longer than they did. The video was still going and I was watching that, and then all of a sudden half the team is on the football field haha. Great vid though.
  11. It was a great game for us last night. I was extremely surprised that we held FAU to 3 points. Granted, we need to work on not letting teams get 358 yards of offense, but it was still pretty solid.
  12. We fit roughly 85,000, and I think it is VERY optimistic to think they'll get anywhere near 10,000 of their fans in the stands.
  13. The thing that is great about Green getting playing time is that even if we lose him for a year, he is going to be that much more experienced by the time he gets a chance to start. We aren't going to have to ask the same questions we asked about Lee. We aren't going to have to listen to people rave about how talented Green is, but not know how he'll perform under the bright lights of Memorial Stadium, cause we'll already know for the most part.
  14. And consider this. Already this year, he has had two injuries. Last year, he had 125 carries for 800+ yards, and he got slightly banged up last year. Now, we're expecting him to get 80-90% of the carries (roughly) in the entire season? He'll have to prove his body can handle the beating, because NFL running backs get it far worse than any college running back.
  15. Why did you say that fro? I'm not gonna be able to sleep for a week now
  16. Seriously, if they really cared about Green getting a redshirt he would NOT BE THE #2 BACK. The #2 QB is the guy who comes in when the #1 comes out. They're not just going to skip over Green and play Latravis if Green gives them the best chance to win. Think about it. Let's say it's a big game, a la the Oklahoma game, and it's OU 35 NU 30 with 2 minutes left to go and Zac Lee just broke his arm. Cody Green is still the #2 quarterback and LW is #3. The coaches know Green is a better quarterback than LW. Do any of you really think they'll throw LW in there just to save Green's redshirt? No way in hell. They're going to play to win now. They're not going to shun the game and say "oh well it's over" just to save a redshirt. And if we are up 49-0 on FAU this weekend, do we play Green and burn his RS for that sake? That argument swings both ways. The only thing that gives me a ton of reservation in this thing is if we try to give Green a series here and there throughout games. The flow of the offense can go into the gutter really quick with this mindset. I think you do. The moment Shawn Watson elevated Cody Green up to the back up spot, he pretty much told us that Green's redshirt isn't going to happen.
  17. Good article. Hit the nail on the head.
  18. I'm not worried about this game at all. I'm more or less worried about playing good....you all remember last year when we played against San Jose St....it wasn't till the 4th quarter till we scored some points to break the lead wide open. I just don't want to see us play sloppy and most of the games that were played today was ALL sloppy and I just don't want to see that with the Huskers after this long off season. True, but those are different teams with different staffs. I have confidence in our team to do well. I think we're done with the days of complete implosion and not beating the teams we definitely should beat.

  20. My lord, everybody seems to be more worried about this game than they were about last years first game. Was it because we weren't expecting much in Pelini's first year? Come on guys, it is less than 48 hours away. We're almost there. Let's be positive!
  21. One thing you forget though is that Missouri had piss poor defense last year, and we have arguably the best defensive mind in the Big 12. Not going to say that we have the best defense, but I think the matchups are in our favor. They also have two brand new coordinators, something else goes in our favor.
  22. If you are going to come onto a Husker board and fire off something like this, you need to learn to formulate a better argument. 1) VaTech is overrated. They lost their best running back and probably belongs in the upper teens, lower 20's if you would rank them on the talent they have now. Now, I'm not saying they are a bad football team, they are probably better than us, but not by as much as you seem to think. 2) KU wasn't able to blitz our offense LAST SEASON and they lost starters on both sides of the line, and the ones they kept weren't able to get it done last year in Lincoln. What makes you think they will be able to do it this year? They also lost all their starting linebackers. 3) What makes you think MU is going to be a huge challenge? Frosh QB and two new coordinators? Hook me up with whatever you are smoking, bro. 4) His name is spelled H-E-L-U, not Hulu. Make sure you are getting names right if you want us to take you seriously. 5) Assuming you are a Tigers fan, exactly who of consequence did Missouri beat last year? Oh that is right, absolutely nobody. They lost to OSU and got blown out by two teams, as Nebraska did. If NU and MU had faced each other at the end of the season instead of the beginning, the outcome may have been very different. Especially considering losing to a KU team that had far less talent on both sides of the ball compared to MU. Now, for your retort.
  23. Haha I had the same reaction. Great job, OP.
  24. First, I'm against it because I think it's a horrible idea. We already have the Sea of Red in the stands, but a red turf would just be too much red. Plus I really don't think the majority of the fans would like it. Second, wikipedia is not a valid source for any sort of formal information. It's ok to get a general idea from it, but not base an argument off of it. However, I myself tried to find information on it and found nothing, so it's possible that it may be true. However, if it weren't a rule, teams would know about it and you'd think that there would be more than just 1 team out of the hundreds of college football teams in the nation (including other divisions) that would color their turfs differently.
