    The Republican Utopia

Rep Duncan Hunter (R-CA), who won re-election last year despite being indicted for campaign finance violations, used campaign funds to cheat on his wife. Traditional values, indeed.

    CB Tamon Lynum [Nebraska Commit]

Thanks for the info! My first thought as I perused Lynum's profile today was that this must be Frost tapping into his Orlando ties to scoop up an under-the-radar guy. Sounds like that was about right. Looking at Conn's profile as well it seems like he's the type of dude we have to snag while he's still low-profile with a handful of offers before they blow up and the big dogs come calling. Lynum sounds like he's even more that case. Not sure if he's closer to 6'2" or 6'3" but he's got the type of size SJB did back in the day and he wound up being a very good player by the end of his career here. Love this commit!

The 2020 Presidential Election - PRE Primaries

I will say it is odd to see how the political world reacted to Slick Willy's womanizing - as recently as 2016 with Trump exploiting it for his own gain before a debate - while on the other hand having all these women credibly accuse him of sexual assault if not outright rape resulting in merely a collective shrug. It's pretty gross. Edit: Crap, this was supposed to be replying to your other comment in the Republican Utopia, sorry.

    Healthcare Reform

I realized we didn't have an actual thread to discuss healthcare reform - just attempts to upend the current law. So I figured I'd make one. I'll start it off with a story I found very interesting, but feel free to discuss whatever else you think is worth talking about. This is a good idea on the part of this group. I wish there was a way to address trade name drugs, since they are by far more expensive, but I'm all for driving down the prices of generics, too. I didn't know others had copied Shkreli's model of jacking up prices of generics to make a quick buck. Shameful. Intersting to note that Bob Kerrey is on the list of advisors.

Absolutely disagree. The only difference is people with political power almost always get to decide where the money goes.

The 2020 Presidential Election - PRE Primaries

I'll be the first to admit I'm not a huge fan of Sanders personally and I have done my fair share of criticizing him in the past. But this is a step further than Warren's plan in this arena on an issue that really matters to me. We've got lots of other problems, but college has only gotten more expensive and we've done very little to address it. I strongly feel we should take action, coupled with increasing support for trade schools and other job skills programs, to reform the way we think about education and job training in the U.S. I've heard that our cumulative student debt could be the next bubble hanging over the economy. What better way to deal with a bubble than simply do away with it completely? This is a good idea and I support it. Good job, Bernie.

The 2020 Presidential Election - PRE Primaries

Thanks. It really chaps my buns when people say polling 2016 got it wrong ergo we can safely ignore it since it's clearly flawed. That's wrong, this is right. National polls nailed the final vote margin but state polls were off. Undecideds broke late to Trump. Hopefully state polls improved. I'll certainly be paying attention to trends in those midwest Rust Belt states that very narrowly carried Trump to victory last time - his popularity is underwater by about 10 or 15 points in places like PA/WI/MI right now. That might change or it might not. But polls are still the best tool we have in understanding and predicting this stuff.

Isn't that what we just did? The Trump tax cuts were a giant reparation to the badly oppressed wealthy and corporations in our country.

  10. Shameless plug for Games Done Quick. It's a biannual speedrunning convention where people come together to play all manner of different games from mainstream to incredibly obscure and see how fast they can finish them. They have different categories depending on what exactly you have to do to complete a run and whether you can use glitches to save time. The whole thing is done to showcase runners ability but more importantly they have a running counter for continual donations that go to charity. This time proceeds are going to Doctors without Borders. Donations can be used to add extra games to the schedule, add more difficult tasks or choose specific characters or names in games. Right now I'm watching a run of Tony Hawk's Underground 2 where the donations chose Shrek as the skater. Hope that's not too confusing. Basically it's nerdy but a ton of fun. If you're interested you can watch on their website or on their Twitch channel. The whole thing is a week long, 24 hours a day, running through next Saturday.

    Immigration Ban

It makes me sad in my fellow human being that this doesn't appear to be a bigger deal to people. Hell, I'm sure there are stringent anti-immigrant folks out there who love the crack down on illegal immigrants and think we're doing the right thing. I don't get how someone could think these camps are the right thing to do. But I suppose there were people who cheered internment camps at one point, too. Fun fact: The first judge shown that this woman is arguing to was in one of those camps as a boy. Sounds like they're gearing up for sting operations to detain more illegal immigrants in major cities tomorrow. I'm guessing even harsher policies are going to be the focus for re-election. My heart is heavy after seeing the tactics used by some of these thugs.

    The Environment

FWIW I believe Democrats have a supermajority in Oregon and thus something absurd like this is the only way for Republicans to block legislation they don't like. Doesn't change that fact this is unacceptable. Maybe Oregon Republicans should re-calibrate their priorities if it earned them superminority status in the state instead of literally running away from their jobs.

    The Environment

How far will Republicans go to avoid dealing with climate change? Oregon Republicans have literally fled their state to Idaho for protection from paramilitary groups after the Oregon governor used a little-used law to order the state patrol to escort them back to the capital for a special session to vote on a climate change bill. This one is wild.

    Trumping up a war?

I get the opposite impression. I think Trump desperately wants to avoid engagement with Iran because he's got the Tucker Carlson's and Sean Hannity's of the world telling him it's not what his base wants. But he's appointed hawks like Bolton and Pompeo who desperately want the opposite. People like Tom Cotton and Lindsey Graham also probably think it's the right thing to do. So they loop him in as little as possible so they can be at the driver's seat. At the last moment Trump realizes what's going on, asks questions that any competent commander-in-chief would've asked long beforehand and bailed with cold feet from something he doesn't even really want to do anyway. The overarching problem here is Trump does not have the temperament to be commander-in-chief.

Anything to put those no-good Democrats in their place, yeah? I've said it before and I'll say it again: You can learn a lot about someone by how far they'll stick their neck out defending Trump.

    Immigration Ban

I'll do without the snark. Thanks bud. Secondly, no. I'll lay out for you exactly what's happening in this thread. You're laying out a very narrow legal defense and sticking specifically to charges you think are defensible in an effort to keep the discussion away from the utter dumpster fire that is the Trump presidency. You come in here boldly touting Republican talking points in an effort to tamp down any any discussion about the shortcomings of a man who by his own behavior has proven himself a threat to the republic. Well, being as we aren't gullible idiots, you're not making that strong of a case.

    Trumping up a war?

That's the thing. There are arguments that can be made against the Iran deal. But it got results. I don't know what this administration's Iran strategy is but so far the results have been sh#t. They own this mess.

    Immigration Ban

Someone in this thread is successfully spinning the conversation back around to Hillary and the Democrats. I wonder if that serves some purpose? Also, since it's getting into legal matters, I'll just leave this here. I'm not a lawyer, but I'll let the lawyers do the thinking for me on this matter.

    Racism - It's a real thing.

Finally we can finally get around to discussing the incredibly pressing problem of racism against white people. As for the discussion of reparations: bear in mind, this was the first hearing the House has held on the matter in decades. And I'm absolutely fine with the idea of having a hearing because I'm willing to admit I have no idea whether they're a good idea or not and exploring the issue thoroughly is the responsible thing to do.

    Phoenix Shop Lifting

Is anyone in here actually doing that, though? No one's defending shoplifting. We all just admit it's a minor offense that was met with an inappropriate response.

If you're being intellectually honest, Obama wanted to release a joint, bipartisan statement announcing Russia was meddling in the elections. But Mitch McConnell said no: So in reality McConnell is a scumbag who doesn't put a high priority on democracy. Bad for the GOP brand, you know.
  24. Danny Bateman

    Racism - It's a real thing.

Did McConnell just "I have a black friend" the idea of reparations? In the context of being a farm state, the bolded is seems to lack a bit of self-awareness.
