  1. yep Tommy needs to execute but maybe give him plays he executes better? That can be really hard to do if you are accustomed to a certain way if doing things and it can definitely handcuff the offense the the rail of a sinking ship, as we saw athe times this year. This will be offensive, so im not gonna say "no offense", but it's the brutal honest truth. This is what the folks say who arent as football smart as others. And not necessarily pertaining to you. Just a generalization as we see this all the time. "Run tommy 30 times. Give him stuff he can handle". It's not as simple as "give him stuff he can execute better". This is the result of not being well rounded ENOUGH. When a defense can plan and play against you and know youre pretty much one dimensional, it's really hard. yeah, we could do things he's more comfortable with more often, but if those things are being keyed on to the point of very little success, whats the sweet spot that an OC can find? Do you keep ramming the square peg into the round hole? Or do you try the round peg that simply doesnt fit in the round hole?
  2. ............ Im about 90% sure i know what the actual def is. But I'll wait. And for one, yes, i know that am a millennial. Which, when he defines it, whether it be right or wrong, will point out why sweeping generalizations continue to be the problem in all this.
  3. Of all those deep balls against Iowa, which every one, our guy had a step or two on their guy. Even if we complete one and gain 30 yards, do you think Iowa panics and immediately scraps their plan and goes into a 2 deep cloud? No. If you want to beat this kind of stuff you have to hit the throws underneath to get them backers off the line. For all his athletic ability, on the open slant to Morgan, the pressure came in the middle, all he had to do was sidestep it, and step into his throw and Stanly turns it up for a 15-20 yard gain. Instead he falls back and throws an errant pass in a hurry off his back feet. This is just an example of the lack of fit. It just is. Great competitor. Great leader. Average QB. But at some point lack of execution of basic stuff cant be continously absolved just "cuz he plays hard". Competitiveness is beyond simply effort. Execution is a factor as well. The interesting part in this case is that it can all be put on the qb. But it cant all be put on the OC/QB coach either. 1. you know damn well-it's common sense-that Tommy isnt being coached to do, or not do, some of the things he does/doesnt do. But where it goes the other way is the lack of fit and comfort for the qb as well.
  4. Ill continue to not take anything serious in regards to Les Miles ability to recruit, evaluate, develope qb's. If he didnt get after Obrien, it probably means the guy will win a pair of Heismans here.
  5. While not great, Banker (much like Cosgrove in 06) has more than earned the right to have another year or two. There was progress and improvement. I guarantee no one saw what was coming on 07 after how solid that 06 defense finished the year. Again. I'm still waiting for intelligible football debate as to why Banker should be let go. This debate shall also include possible replacements and their resumes. But remember, Wisconsin and Penn St (Aranda and Shoop both leaving for SEC programs) both lost their DCs from a year ago and at worst remained the same, but basically really improved. Our issues remain much deeper than basic coaching right now. We are young on both fronts and there is a mental as well a mature lack of physicality
  6. Ok. So im a DC gameplanning for Nebraska. Here we go. I watch 50 hours of film and chart tendancies, personnel, formations, plays, abilities and matchups. From this i take that 1) The quarterback cant consistently throw good bubble screens. So my linebacker to the multi receiver side does not play as far outside and is now avail for the c gap in the run game. 2) the quarterback cannot consistently throw accurately into tight man/man windows. So I no longer have to use safeties up in bracket/double coverage down the field. They are free to fit against the run first, and play any quick outside passes. 3)the qb routinely misreads and locks on to guys presnap and oftne misses guys running free or sitting down underneath-whether it be with errant throws or simply not seeing them. So my backers are free to play run first against any RPO situation. 4)the qb is a good runner, but again, I dont have to worry about his passing ability so my safeties are free to spy and fit the run first and drop back under in coverage second while corners/nickels play over 5) The qb is happy footed in the pocket. while hes is very athletic and mobile, he shows now tendancy on film to move within the pocket and stay on his progressions. So my pressure plan is to stay in the lanes and keep in the pocket and throw under diress. Now. All these observations are obviously not a deal where it's like that 100% of the time. But defense in football isnt about being able to stop everything all the time. it's all about tendancies and abilities. So why the hell would i put any attention whatsoever on receivers down the field or the bubble game when i know with 100% certaintly that youre not gonna move the ball up and down the field that way anyway. yeah, youll hit one or two a game. or youll get a bubble here and there. But you know what? Now its' the next play and youre still 50 yards from the endzone. This offense and it's lack of consistently solid qb play in the pass game, and lack of oline play was greatly exposed against the only 3 good-great defenses on the schedule. And against the much lesser ones it was just enough. It just is what it is.
  7. Does cornstart even know what an actual millenial is?
  8. I would like to hear intelligible conversation as to what's so wrong with Banker at this point. Lot of uneducation generalizations based on nothing. You do realize that Banker is the DEFensive coordinator, right?
  9. Im not gonna say they didnt care. I think we're beyond that. But we are dealing with human minds here and it's been an absolute grind. I think we really hit a wall physically and mentally a few weeks ago. We had enough in the tank to squeek one out against Minny, and just overroll a much weaker Maryland, but it all came to a head against Iowa. A team that came ready for a street fight. And all this talk about it not being a rivalry? Better put that sh#t to bed now. We are with Iowa right now where we were with Colorado in about 1989-1990. You better start taking them seriously and not spend a week leading up mocking them and their "no one gives a sh#t" history. It's 2016. Obviously the history doesnt matter. It's a 3-3 deadlock with em now and theyve won 3 of 4, two of which werent close (of course the Bo ppl dont wanna admit the sh#t pushing they gave us at home in 2013. I saw a lot of this after the game) But enough about Iowa. And back to Nebraska. And what I'm disappointed in is the overreaction by so many to let another one bad game really just derail and shitcan any hope and improvements we've seen. This rebuild is taking time. There was progress in some phases and not so much in others. We were seriously exposed in areas and see greatly what has to be improved. QB play
  10. Im fine with mediocrity. Perfectly fine with it. I wouldnt be able to handle that. I wanna live a long life.

      corncraze

Bleh. Speak for yourself. Whole game I was watching, I kept thinking how cool it would be if we were in that scenario. I want to experience games like 2001 Oklahoma.

      krc1995

I agree. It was a fun game to watch not emotionally invested in either team.

  11. I've heard for the last two seasons, it's not the number of losses it's how you lose. Blowouts to OSU, Iowa, and f'ing Purdue (last year before the garbage time TDs) are just as bad as any Wiscy loss during Bo's tenure. If 9 wins weren't good two years ago, why is it plenty to be happy about today? Bo didn't get fired for his record. He got fired for alienating himself from the rest of the athletic department and turning the kids against the rest of the athletic department. Stop saying it was about his record. It most certainly was not. 1. There are plenty of coaches that act like Bo but don't get fired because of wins. If Bo had won at least a conference championship he'd still be coaching at Nebraska. 2. I didn't say anything about why he was fired, I clearly stated that I heard that it's not about number of wins it's how you lose. That was here, on this board. People defending Riley's 7 loss season by saying that at least there were no blowouts. Fans on this board still call him 408 or PeLLLLini. I guess they're complaining about his character? 3. It doesn't matter why Bo got fired, we need to stop making bullsh#t excuses for Riley. He was given a team that won 9 games, promptly lost 7, then was blown out by OSU and Iowa. Right now I give 0 fu#*$ that he's a great guy, his job is to win games and he isn't so good at his job. we use 408 and Pellllini to mock him cuz the guys an unhinged jackwad
  12. 9 wins yo. Pretty much what i expected.

  13. Trying to plan ahead and making sure you get the necessary prep time and game experience for a 3rd string, true fresh qb that youre wanting to redshirt is ridiculous. it's one thing of if the 2nd guy but the 3rd? Cmon. You cant prepare for everything. If youre first two guys get hurt in the matter of back to back weeks, and youre just not good enough to overcome it, you just have to wash your hands of it and say "sh#t, it just wasnt our year". sh#t happens. But situations like cant be used as means of preach and saying the coaches screwed up not having POB ready. Or already next year saying they wouldnt have Gebbia ready.
  14. Still beating this dead horse? It's hard to take your knowledge of NU football seriously if you think that Osborne suddenly woke up during the '90s and realized that he must start to recruit speed! Guy, let me introduce you to Irving Fryer, and Broderick Thomas to name a few. Or, are they not speedy enough for you? And, it wasn't his critics he listened to, rather, it was his friends, like Bobby Bowden (who in turn learned from Jimmy Johnson at Miami) along with hiring assistants like Kevin Steele, which lead to the defensive changes in the '90s, of putting linebackers at defensive ends, and defensive backs at linebacker positions. Guy said nothing about recruiting. It wasnt about recruiting speed. it was about getting MORE speed on the field at all costs. Even if it mean multiple guys completely changing positions and changing the whole defensive scheme. Critics. Opponents. Colleagues. Friends. What difference does it make You said the same thing he did.
  15. We're gonna find out quick and in a hurry-with all that money to play with-where Oregon themselves think they stand in the power pool of college football, and where they actually do stand.
  16. College football is going the way of the NFL. Sterile, awash in corporate money, less silly fun and pomp and pageantry, all color-by-numbers and boredom. I find myself watching games to mostly study and get ideas for my kids teams. And show my kid stuff. I seriously just dont get into like I used to. You hit the nail on the head there. Watching these high school games the last couple days and seeing the raw passion and desire (not saying that all college players have none, but lets just be honest here.......) and over the past few years, I'm coming to the conclusion that I'd rather see the NFL have their own minor league and College ball could get back to pure amateurism. I just think the product is being watered down by not only the presence of players who are looking ahead to a better deal, but also the pursuit of said players. I would rather watch a game with 11 ryker fyfes, brandon reillys, sam hahns, dylan utters vs 11 Ross Dzuriss, Webers, and Tanner Zlabs. This is not saying that ALL of our scholly players are not fun to watch. Im not saying. But we can be honest and say that some have a much more potent desire and opportunity for something bigger and better. So it just doesnt feel pure and real anymore.
  17. Things like this is why little by little, day by day, I'm losing interest in college football as well (along the lines of how I feel about hte NFL. I am a Chiefs fan, but i dont glue my self to the television on sundays. I put my earbuds in.) Due mainly to being busy, I found myself (mowing business on side of full time job and coaching youth sports) mowing during 3 different Nebraska games this year. There's just something happening with college football now as well. It's become such big business and big money that the fun of it is just deteriorating. I took wife and kids to the Minnesota game. it's amazing that I was just meh at the whole thing. maybe I'm getting old and grumpy. I dont know. But the purity of the game is just vanishing at a rapid pace. And then watching some fabulous state championship games the last couple days, it makes even more clear.
  18. i dont think the soft spot theory is too far fetched. Now, it's high possible it doesnt pertain to the qb position, cuz yeah, at all costs, you really wanna redshirt your golden boy true freshman if you have a 5th year senior with 4 years starting exp. That's a given. But it was talked about in the offseason that this staff last season played guys despite some of the toxicity becuase they felt it be best that they didnt come in and just rock the boat to hard. And I think that theory paid off in the long run. Trust was generated. And those who didnt, left.
  19. It's a weird deal definitely. But youre dealing with human beings, with real emotions and real minds. There's so much more to coaching success than just lining up the best and rolling the ball out. There are sooooo many examples and instances that the best player isnt always the best player. There has to be a degree of fit, both schematically and mentally. Bottom line is, it's just hard to win at any program anymore. It just is. I dont think Michigan just picked out the highest profile alum. They were just fortunate that one the best coaches out there with one of the highest degrees of national stardom happened to be an alum. Is it possible 5-10 years down the road we could be in that boat with Frost? Possibly. But you dont have to have an alum. How many former USC or ND alums are good football coaches? i think some of these big name programs-and I think you could even put Nebraska in this-have an entitled attitude. There's just too much living in the past and being complacent becuase of what was. There's too much balance and too much parity in the game anymore. Another thing is that is has become such a big business with huge money implications, and in this world of social media where every Joe Schmo has a voice on twitter, mb's, facebook, etc, the pressure and feel of pressure to win big and win now and win constant is more felt by the coaches and it seems like the days of coaches staying at a place for a long period of time or gone. Becuase you either win big right away or you get canned. Or, you do you win big right away, then take a step back (because you cant stay on top forever) but you've already generated ridiculous expectations and the pressure gets higher and you either cave to it and get fired or bolt. Very few coaches have shown the resolve to persevere through their own expectations. We shall see if guys like Dantonio can push through. Saban comes to mind as a guy that has. I doubt Brian Kelly gets a chance. Even Urban Meyer hasnt shown yet that he's capable of such an act.
  20. he's playin. it's a done deal.
  21. Nobody wants to entertain that topic, because we've moved on and are living in the "here and now" of Husker football, not the Osborne/Solich years. 2003 year 6 2014 year 7 2016 year 2 pretty common sense to me.
