Klieman or Fickell would both be great gets. Meyer, Rhule, and Kiffin wouldn't be long term guys, and we ain't getting any of those dudes anyhow. Kalen DeBoer would be an absolute home run. No idea what his contract details are at UW, but if my opinion mattered (which it doesn't), I'd throw the key to the bank at him. South Dakota guy, wins everywhere he goes, got a lot of coaching years in him yet. I've seen his name thrown around on here, but not a lot.

Father is police chief in Chamberlain, and is a former powerlifter and current strongman competitor. Nash is a fantastic wrestler, and could be tough to get him to play ball in college rather than wrestle. With that said, this kid would be at the top of my recruiting board for '20. Very special athlete.

I went with 'no', but there is a little bit of an asterisk on it. Do I think Nebraska can ever win 3 titles in 4 years, go 60-3 over a stretch and/or win a bunch of conf championships in a row? No, I don't. But I think Nebraska can have similar success as Oklahoma has had over the past 15-18 years . Always hovers in that top 15-20, has a few disappointing years here and there, makes it to the playoff now and again, and maybe once every decade or so be a real player in the national championship discussion. Nebraska and Oklahoma have similar traditions with similar recruiting disadvantages (I realize that Oklahoma is close to Texas and has more D1 talent, but similar geographically). Nebraska needs to play a different brand of football than OU, but I think Nebraska can achieve the same amount of success.

I don't have much that I learned, rather more of a realization. Of the defense that started today, NU only loses Gangwish, Cockrell and Rose for next year (and maybe Collins, fingers crossed here). All good players, but not irreplaceable. The talent is there and will be even better next year, so hopefully the coaching doesn't let them down. On offense, the oline will look different, but appears more talented for next year. Again, assuming the coaching doesn't let the team down, the oline should be improved. The vast majority of skill players are back for 2016. And this, my friends, has me excited. I'm sure most of you probably already realized all this, but last week and today are the only games I've sat and watched this year, and it's tough to judge by listening to the call on the radio (harvest doesn't care about Saturdays). A pretty good staff could be assembled from those guys with Nebraska ties. I'm not saying that Nebraska needs a staff entirely with NU ties or that Riley should be fired, I'm just surprised how many guys are out there.

I would have thought that Nebraska would have had a legit shot at McElwain. He's working out for a Florida team that was sub .500 last year through his first 5 games.

How did I know this was coming. But no, Not at all. I watched a lot of football yesterday, and for the most part, everybody's offense is the same, with some tweaks. I've just pondered why so few teams are truly unique on offense.

I want to preface this question by saying I liked the Riley hire, and still do. I think he will be fine in the long run. My question is more about Nebraska and its place in today's CFB landscape. Can Nebraska become consistently nationally relevant (top 10-15 year in and year out) by doing the same thing as everyone else? Nebraska wants that elite passing QB with pinpoint accuracy and a cannon of an arm. So does everybody else. NU wants 6'4" receivers that run like gazelles and could catch a golf ball off the tee. So does everybody else. NU wants 6'7" 325 lb tackles and 6'4" 300+ lb G/C. So does everybody else. Here's my point. When NU was good to dominant, they didn't recruit the same type of guys as everybody else. If there was one great option QB in the country, Nebraska could get him cause nobody else wanted him. They Recruited undersized linemen that were athletic enough to pull and trap and tough as nails that everybody else viewed as maybe too small. They had a system that was unique that the staff knew inside and out and recruited and developed to it. Defense was somewhat similar, they just got tougher and faster because they had to get beat on everyday by the offense. I'm not saying that Nebraska needs to go back to the option, I'm more asking, can Nebraska be consistently top flight by doing the same thing as everybody else? Sorry for the long post.

I was watching the game in a location where I couldn't hear the announcers (local saloon), so I couldn't hear the explanation by the white hat or what the announcers were saying, but I don't think the issue was whether Lewis was eligible or not (because he was, assuming that he reported to the officials). Looked to me as if the issue was that the other linemen were downfield and therefore the pass had to be backwards (a screen) in order for that to be legal. I thought they called "ineligible man downfield", but that it was on one of the other linemen, not Lewis. There was no reason Lewis was ineligible assuming he reported to the officials, which I guarantee he did considering the play was 100% set up to go to him. You just don't forget to report as eligible if you are a 320 lb OT. That's every tackles dream.

I grew up in the country. I had a 400 acre field across the road to the north and a 200 acre field across the road to the west. I know very well what it's like to live in rural Nebraska, and I very much disagree with you on the culture being similar, especially throughout the Big XII. Next to nothing in Texas is like Nebraska (I have family there). The culture is quite different, and I do not understand the pining for those schools - with the exception of A&M, who were good folks. I don't miss Texas, Texas Tech or Baylor one bit. The only school with any kind of nostalgia would have to be Oklahoma. We steamrolled most everyone in the Big 8 for decades - the draw was an easy win. Their fans barely traveled here, and when we went to their stadiums there were more Nebraska fans there than Jayhawk fans, Cyclone fans, Wildcat fans. Your understanding of the geography of Ohio is pretty poor. Ohio has a greater percentage of farmland (about 55%) than Nebraska (less than 40%). Outside of the large cities every single state has rural communities. Wisconsin is a major farming state. Iowa is a wash (Iowa/Iowa State). Illinois is a major farming state, rural areas outside of Chicago are nearly spot-on identical to Nebraska rural communities (I have family there). Save the kitten. Do some research. You're right. I concede. However, I do suggest that you drive more than 20 miles west or north of Lincoln and then take a stroll through the BIG country side. At that point, let's see if you can make the case that Nebraska is more like Ohio than it is Texas.

That's common sense. I felt a lot more at home in the Big XII due to the fact we were surrounded by teams that we had played for 100 years. - Has your pining for the old Big XII Conference been remedied at all, or do you still miss those OU/KSU/MIZZ/CU match-ups. Honestly, I miss those games. Heck of a lot better than a matchup with Purdue/Indiana/anyone at 11am. - If the Big XII and the Big Ten made a clean deal for you to return to the Big XII tomorrow, would you be happy about it? If dollars and cents were completely even and the Big XII looked to appear more stable, I'd take the Big XII in a heartbeat. - What is one perception about the conference that has changed since you've been a member? Not much. I still think it's relatively unexciting football. I think the BIG teams can hang with most teams in the country, but it's still not pretty football. - My least favorite school in the Big Ten is Iowa, because I have too many friends from Iowa that are pricks. - How do you feel about Maryland and Rutgers joining the conference. Who would you rather have seen? Hate it. No excitement for either of these teams. Would have rather seen an Oklahoma/Mizzou pairing, but I understand the pot load of money thats at stake. - What is your favorite B1G football stadium? What impressed you about it? It's been a rough couple of years by your standards, but do you think the Nebraska brand is better off now that it would have been had you stayed in the Big XII? Are your struggles due to the new conference? The coaching? The players? The BIG has had nothing to do with it. Nebraska's brand if affected by its own doing. For those of you that think the state of Nebraska fits in better culturally than they did in the Big XII, to you I say, get out of the city. Other than Omaha/Lincoln (where you would fit in culturally with most bigger cities in the country), the rest of the state is culturally similar to the Kansases, Oklahomas, and even Texases of the world. Nebraska, geographically, is part of the Great Plains. The majority of the land in the state is agricultural ground, with most of that being rangeland for grazing. Does that sound more like Oklahoma or Ohio? You get west of Highway 81 and north of Hwy 30, and this state is culturally identical to Kansas/Oklahoma/most of Texas, whether that's a good or bad thing is debatable. If I have to hear another person truthfully think that Nebraska fits in culturally better with the BIG than the Big XII, I will drown a kitten. Sorry for the rant. Maybe it's the country bumpkin coming out in me. I just liked the teams in the Big XII.

Watch the play where he got his sack. Weakest attempt to take his legs out I've ever seen. Gregory's sack was actually the QB's fault. It was a 3 step drop and he didn't throw the ball. OT's nearly always cut on 3 step drops.

Why NU can't get top OL recruits is beyond me. Who wouldn't want to come and block for the likes of Abdullah, Armstrong/Stanton, Heard, Cross, Taylor, Turner, Bell, etc., etc.? It just makes no sense. Getting great DL guys is tough, so that makes a little more sense to me.

I don't see why you can't be a good fan and still realize that your team is going to get shellacked in a month. I am a fan, win or lose. I will watch every second of the game on Jan 1. But I also realize that this team is not built to compete with a team like Georgia. I hope I am wrong.

Virgina .... Yes Virginia. The same Virginia who landed the #1 RB in the country. Mike London has been a recruiting machine since he's been there. The same Virginia that is currently 2-6 and has lost their last 6 games to the likes of Duke, Maryland, Wake Forest, etc. They haven't lost to a decent team yet (unless you consider TCU and La Tech "decent"). They did beat Penn State though. I NEVER said they were good so your whole statement was just pointless. Im actually glad they're bad because im like 1 of 10 Nebraska fans in VA and people tries to talk alot of sh*t to me. Whoa, whoa, whoa.....simmer down a little. I wasn't saying anything about your post. I was simply pointing out that even bad teams are going to pull a few good recruits now and again. I have been impressed with Virginia's recruiting class thus far, and I also think that Mike London will get them on the right path back to respectability. There is a lot of talent in Virginia, and they are going to be able to land some of these guys, and also be in the mix for some bigger names nationwide.

We very much have a scheme problem. I wouldn't say we have a scheme problem on offense. I think the "scheme" for our offense fits our players pretty well. Sometimes Beck's playcalling is a little suspect, but overall, I think the scheme is spot on for the playmakers that we have. We don't have road graders up front to run Power I football, and they aren't really the best at pass protection either, so we can't be a drop back passing team. I think the offense we run takes advantage of the skill set (or lack thereof) of the Oline. With that said, Nebraska struggles mightily landing Oline recruits. 3/5 of the starting Oline are walk ons, and at times, 4 out of the 5 linemen are from Nebraska and the other is from ND, none of which are recruiting hot beds. I, more than anybody, take great pride in the fact that a vast majority of the guys that play on the Oline are from Nebraska and the Midwest, but that also tells me that we are whiffing on big time recruits. Couple that with an Oline coach that doesn't have much of a clue, and the inconsistency is going to continue. My wish is for NU to be able to take tough, smart, 250lb kids from NE, IA, SD, WY, etc., that want to play for Nebraska because its Nebraska, and not because it's got "sweet facilities", redshirt them, develop them in the weight room, and start them as juniors. Maybe that's not possible anymore (likely), but a guy can dream can't he?

Chad Greenway...... Well hello! Ben Leber...... 24 sacks in the NFL, but I'm no good because I'm from SD. Jay Novacek.... kiss my rings! Just to mention a few from SD that didn't go to Nebraska (I'm aware that Novacek played HS ball in NE, but he was born in SD).

I don't think recruiting is really the issue. There's talent on that D. Osborne and McBride weren't always pulling in 4 and 5 star guys. Watch this video to prove that. Of the guys shown in that vid, were any of them elite recruits (Wistrom?, Peters?, Alberts?)? Now granted, I was 5 years old in 1990 so I don't remember all of the 90s vividly, but who the hell was Carmer, Legette, Mike Anderson, Jason Pesterfied to anyone but die hard Husker fans that remember those years well? McBride attacked, attacked, attacked. The players wanted it more, and if they got their hands on the ball carrier, he was done. They gave up some big plays, but they made you pay for it. Even when blocking, these guys were tenacious (refer to about 5:35 in the vid to watch #20 curbstomp the biggest guy on the field on an int return). These guys were developed into mean guys that liked to hit. The defense that Pelini runs is a soft defense built around schemes and knowledge of said schemes. This doesn't work in college. This isn't the pros. These guys don't work 50-60 hours a week on football. Take the heavy "thinking" out of the equation and see what they can do. Let the coaches think, let the players play. Disclaimer: I realize that this isn't the 90s anymore and that things have changed since that time. I think we can all agree that the 2012 defense is extremely soft, but not necessarily bad football players.

Agreed. The Oline was not a huge issue tonight. The play calling was horrendous in the 2nd half and put the Oline in some pretty tough positions. They didn't play well, but they weren't the reason we lost tonight either.

There's no reason to have 78 threads all bitching about the game. What's not to understand? Because I would rather sift through more shorter threads than have to read 1,000 posts in one thread, but hey, that's just me.

They beat us, fair and square. And honestly, it wasn't nearly as closes the score showed. That could have easily been a 3 td loss, and probably should have.
