  1. Damn, and I bet against them.
  2. with all of the hail mary's that have happened throughout history, why do coaches still choose to only rush 3? The best reason to drop 8 in those situations is to guard against a play that isn't a Hail Mary. If you rush too many you could be outnumbered near the boundary on an underneath throw with blockers available. 8 also allows press coverage while keeping 3 deep defenders to swat the ball. As always, the defense has a disadvantage in that they must cover the entire field while the offense just has to outnumber at the point of attack. There's certainly a good argument, especially in true Hail Mary situations, that dropping 8 allows a QB with a less than stellar arm to get to a launch spot that allows that throw to be made.
  3. Link I don't know what's more absurd, that number or the fact they almost did it!
  4. Scout: I'd hate to be team in need of QB in 2016 NFL Draft http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000592933/article/scout-id-hate-to-be-team-in-need-of-qb-in-2016-nfl-draft
  5. No Beck's offense was mostly Nevada Pistol read option, but he junked the pass portion of it for KU's pass attack I think. Ultimately it was some bastard hybrid that never really worked. Lol! After all these years, and now we finally have a name for it. I like this better than "multiple" Gawd, after hearing Beck say it so many times, I couldn't even teach my math class basic facts, I was so sick of the word. All it ever really amounted to was "multiple" misfires, "multiple" miscues, "multiple" screw-ups, and ultimately "multiple" inexplicable losses Now you know how I feel about the word "balance".
  6. I think you'll be disappointed. I'm not. Watch film on them. They know how to block and block well. Some one is teaching them. I wasn't attempting to evaluate him, only comment on how everyone hates our offensive lines.
  7. I agree. However, the best way to minimize having a weak defense is to keep them off of the field. If you want to minimize a weak defense, score as much and as quickly as you can. If you scored every drive, on a single play, your defense becomes virtually irrelevant.
  8. 54+ TDs on only 1850 yards of offense. Just under 5 yards per point. Almost a TD per minute. Hell with the offense, I want to know how they're scoring all of those pick 6's.
  9. This is really shaping up to be some sort of dream starting job.
  10. I don't know if we can call it a trend, yet. With so many openings, so many of them being very early openings, and a few having problems further up the administrative ladder....well, we were bound to see at least a few interim hires. Plus, it's really, really hard to evaluate personnel in this manner. It's not uncommon for really successful head coaches to not be so successful before or after a particular job. It's easy to assume you can just throw money at a job and get anyone you want, but how often is that really the case? Every once in a while there is a guy available that most will agree is a can't miss (and he actually succeeds) but there are so many examples where that's not the case. Nobody is so big they are entitled to successful head coach after successful head coach. The best most programs can hope for is to, upon hitting pay dirt, keep the one they got!
  11. You never know if a guy will do the job until he does. Not a bad starting job, good recruiting area, relatively low expectations. Some Oregon fans are happy to see him go, but I don't put much stock in that. Seems so many fans hate their play caller these days. Everyone seems to think they can do a better job. So many things go into play calling, it's really easy to second guess. It's interesting how often we see play callers change these days, too. Doesn't seem like anyone has enough success in the eyes of some. I think Frost does well. He already acts like a head coach, speaks like a head coach. I wonder how he'll handle the increased media responsibilities. He can be a bit short there, to be honest. Can't blame him, some of those questions are ridiculously stupid, but that's a part of his job now.
  12. I don't have major qualms with the top 4, but I wish the order of the top 4 was changed. I really think Alabama and OU are the two best teams at the moment. If we're going to the effort of seeding, I'd rather see them play in the championship. Maybe the committee just really likes Clemson, but I feel their record is affecting the order too much. I'm not sure they're even better than Ohio St, but that's a close argument either way.
  13. I know, for me, Athlon has been so thoroughly passed by in the internet age that they aren't worth reading. Seems every article I read, regardless of writer, is nothing more than a fluff piece. Nothing I'd regard as actual analysis. Meanwhile there are so many sites that do provide deeper content. Some specialize in X's and O's, others in analytics; imbedded video, interactive tools...so much good stuff these days. Athlon still feels like the days pre-internet when you'd scan an article hoping for a nugget. For me, it is just not worth the read, nor really worth the comment (which is why I really haven't commented on this string of articles). I'm sure they still have an audience, but they haven't caused me to pause for thought for far too long. Maybe others, who choose to be more vocal, feel the same way. Just not worth my time these days to do so.
  14. It's been a long time since bowls were about the reward of a season. This season is merely the pinnacle of a trend that started long ago.
  15. Very often the case. The bowl system has a lot of drawbacks.
  16. Appears to be a 5 tech with his hand in the dirt. I'd consider that a DE, but that distinction has been greatly blurred over the years. Regardless, he's not a read on this play. He should have been blocked. He made a great play to avoid being blocked and to grab the INT. Hats off to him. Surely, we can find another Tommy play to argue about.
  17. Tommy led the nation in picks. I don't think it matters Matt Johns of Virginia is the current leader in most interceptions thrown thus season.
  18. How about we wait until POB gets here in January and see how the career of a real passing Qb goes. TA is just a run and chuck it qb. Manion had just 8 INT's last year under Riley. Manion had an AY/A (a function of yds, TDs, and ints) that year of 6.9 yds Tommy this year had an AY/A of 6.7 and 7.5 the year prior Baker Mayfield was at 10.9 as a comparison Stats like these are created to get a better overall picture. While turnovers are generally considered bad, there is actually a thing as too few interceptions. QBs with a relatively low interception rate are may not be taking enough chances to give their team the best opportunity to succeed. Interceptions should be balanced with the other side of the risk equation, which is what stats like average yards per attempt try to do.
  19. On the one hand, they have a ridiculously weak schedule. On the other, they'd be a conference champ. Which message would the committee like to emphasize more? Interesting scenario.
  20. I hope some of you aren't setting yourselves up for disappointment. Speaking in absolutes has a way of doing that.
  21. I wish college football could have found a better solution to the money problems that have divided the sport instead of having to resort to so many nuclear options.
