Got the grant that ate up all of Fall semester. Now on to doing the actual study.

@Thanks_Tom RR my wife always just says, great job putting in a ton of extra work, as your reward we've got even more work for you.
I appreciate it though.

The Houston Astros' press conference was horrendous; basically a PR lesson in what not to do. The owner literally got caught lying. Watch the clip.

I'm not sorry, you're sorry!

Writing grants in an unsupportive academic environment is the most soul sucking thing I've ever done.
-
@Thanks_Tom RR Yeah, the new position. I've never been in such a dysfunctional department before. The chair and dean are great. Everything else is more or less a cluster.
It's bad enough that we're probably going to be on the market again next year. I'm a little worried we won't be able to solve the two body problem again and I now have been at two institutes in three years which isn't a great look.
On the bright side I've been able to get a research lab up and running with two approved IRBs and have submitted two grants this semester all while on a 3/3.

Given the comment about having a close knit team and the fact that I do research on developing connection between people, I'm trying to a way to get the team to let me work with them. Odds of it happening are almost zero, but it would be pretty dang awesome.

Finally, everyone will have proof of just how little I know about college football.

Just put in my notice at my job a month in advance. Told by my boss that I should have trusted them more and told them sooner. Also told by my boss I might lose my benefits because I'm only part time during the summer. Take home message: Don't notify employer in advance that you're leaving, just stop showing up. What BS.

I know some of you do home brewing, anyone ever try doing vodka?
-
@huKSer I think technically you would be in violation of the law. Additionally, if you're only distilling a little you would mainly get the foreshots/heads and the tails, you would have less ethanol and more methanol, acetone, acetaldehyde, and acetate. You really need larger batches to get the good stuff.

@JJ Husker yeah, distilling is illegal no matter what.
I'm a whiskey collector and interested in eventually exploring distilling (so I've learned a lot). The start up is a pain and finding the right still/heat source isn't the most fun. Once you get that going though, the process isn't too bad. There are some really great books on it.

Is losing half of the response emojis a cost cutting move? Is HuskerBoard in financial distress? Inquiring minds want to know

You should probably make a donation, just in case.

Anyone have any general house buying advice?
-
Yeah, unfortunately, we're going to need the PMI. It still will cost us less than rent would and with rent that money is just being lit on fire anyway. I think ideally we would've liked to have saved up for one more year but rent is about 1200 and a mortage including taxes etc is going to run closer to 900 even with a minimal down payment. Also allows us to get a dog.

@JJ Husker I'm sure I could google it, but what's drainage and foundation compaction? If you don't want to explain I can hammer it out on my own.
@darkhorse85 didn't know that was a thing. Thanks!

What would your "sock" name be if you were trying to not get busted?
I feel like it would be best to go with something that seems almost randomly generated: xrg456

Did the seemingly impossible. Wife and I offered tenure track positions in the same department. Chair of the department is also a husker fan. Life is good.

We've lived apart for 2 years, but this is her first year on the job market. We lucked out on literally our last shot. Between the two of us, we submitted I think 92 job applications this year.

To be fair, Auburn did hire a coach that I'm pretty sure sold his soul to the devil. Pearl is about as dirty as you can get.
I'm happy we got Fred, he seems both clean and good.

Don't think this second half is going to go well.

@JJ Husker only by request. I'm only minorly superstitious myself, I held off making this post for a whole half.

Don't think this basketball game is going to go well.

And this is why I don't bet.

If you own a pick up truck, what percentage of time would you say you use it for an intended purpose vs. using it as a means of pure transportation from Point A to B.

@RedSavage my wife and I bought a Subaru for the 4wd.
Personally, I drive a Ford Fiesta. Meets my needs and gets about 42 MPG freeway. Easy on the wallet, easy on the earth.

I hope I haven't been upsetting people too much on the politics board. I really don't want to get banned so if I go too far tell me.
