Either way, like you said let's make sure we have an extra year of a legitimate lineman! I'm curious if Gaylord would be getting a look if his season hadn't ended.

I generally like Jaimes and am not quite as low on Farniok as some, but that showing was terrible across the board. We just don't even have the guys to try behind them. Bando appears to be the 6th lineman everywhere except Center, he came in for Jaimes the one game and then Hixson this week. Kinda surprised it wasn't Raridon, not a great sign for him.

I'm not great at evaluating line play, so this is more of me synthesizing what I read and combining that with the eye test. My understanding is that ideally M. Farniok would move to a guard position. I'm with you though, there doesn't seem to be depth and the guys that I remember being excited about when Riley was around don't seem to have panned out.

Do you think the plan is to move him to LT down the road? Just curious, I feel like you see more 6'9 RTs than LTs. I also figured they have him at RT now for a reason since he could backup either spot, but that reason could be because they were hoping he could win a job and Farniok's would be easier to take than Jaimes'.

You're probably right here. That's my bad. I think Turner C. is likely our LT of the future.

Losing this badly to Minnesota will (hopefully) be the proof the coaches need to make changes on the O line. I think Frost is trying to make it work for now in order to build on it for the future but we’re going to lose recruits at this rate. At this point in the season, we can start plugging younger guys in without losing redshirts. The lack of effort from the beginning on Saturday is more concerning than anything. MN was on fire. We looked like we just wanted the game to be over so we could have our bye week. When our 2nd string went in toward the end of the game, we finally saw some inspired play.

I think there's still some math out there. If everything falls perfectly, we're still not out of the B1G west yet. That means it is possible that we have 7 more games. Assuming the tFR are better than what we have, that means you're probably looking at them playing against Wisconsin, Iowa, B1G and Bowl. As things get mathamatically taken off the table, I imagine seeing more fluidity. It's also possible that WI is just penned in as a loss in which case you might see some action against weaker opponents with better lines in order to ensure wins.

If I'm a coach, I've got to imagine that MN has a minimum of 2 losses of their schedule with another possible loss to Iowa. If Iowa loses to OSU and we somehow manage to beat them, they're a 2 loss team with us owning the head to head. There's math on the table and I hope the staff isn't going to just start reacting.

I'd also be willing to tank this season in the name of having a starting LT for one more year in BB.

It really is unbelievable how bad this line in. Cam is the best blocker on the line and right now I don't think it's close. I thought our tackles were bad, but after last game it is definitely the guards. Hixson should not see the field unless we are up 4 scores. It is really sobering that Foster and Farmer, who many and myself have criticized numerous times were much better than what we are seeing today. Austin needs to shuffle some things up in this bye week or we are gonna be in for another long game against an Indiana team who looks much improved.

Jaimes- Wilson- Jurgens- M. Farniok- Benhart

I'll also follow-up and say, I'm all for shuffling up etc, but I'm anti burning any red-shirts. HCSF is playing a game where he can't be so bad that we lose support or become apathetic, but he has to be doing everything he can to play for the future. IMO Wandale is playing now because he wouldn't have come here if we didn't play him. We're doing everything we can to not burn redshirts.

I'm right there with you and have been saying this since fairly early in the season. Right now our line is young, undersized, and playing out of position.

    Our line: Jaimes: 6'5" 250

    Nixon: 6'4" 260

    Jurgens: 6'4" 245

    Wilson: 6'3" 295

    Farniok: 6'6" 310

Here's what we have in the wings(out of HS):

    Benhart: 6'9" 287

    Michael Lynn: 6'6" 291

    Brent Banks: 6'7" 265

    Matthew Anderson: 6'6" 260

    Jimmy Fritzsche 6'7" 240

    Corcoran (in theory) 6'6" 280

You think our staff didn't realize that we weren't in a good place? These guys need to get in the weight room, learn, etc. but we're red-shirting so that they can have the team they need. Jaimes didn't burn his RS because he was that good IMO, we had no other feasible options. We also didn't get our Juco that we wanted last year. This was always going to be the problem spot. IMO, next year there's going to be a lot of unrest on the line with the young guys getting player time earlier than we want just because they have the right bodies. I don't know if it's going to be a whole heck of a lot better if that's the case because I like older players no the OL.

DL should be a little better because the roster management issues weren't quite as bad and we landed some JUCO help.

We're not there yet guys and I don't think HCSF suddenly forgot how to coach. I think he know's we're limited with the players we have. The good news is, the staff is going out and getting guys, skill players look great, we're getting our Linemen, our secondary is good.  I think what we need to see is our LBs and TEs step up and we'll be hitting full stride in about 2 years. This will be ideal timing (IMO) as we will have just opened some amazing new facilities. Frost knew it was a rebuild, remember that this is why he asked for a long starting contract, he needed the security for the rebuild. We're on the right track, it just hurts getting there.

I mean... we're seriously dragging AM for this?

I have a hard time how anyone could watch the game and blame AM. Thanks for posting some of these tweets.

  7. For games like this, I remind myself of what the coaches and AD were saying before the season. The language I remember hearing was about making a bowl, I think they're pretty honest with themselves and where the team is at.

That said, I think this all needs to be taken in context. Look at our 2 deep. How many of those guys are transfers or Tr/rFR/SO? On offense: 3 of 6 WR, 3/12 linemen, our top 2 qb, our top 2 RB. On the whole O, we have 2 seniors in the two deep and they play at the same position, Noa and Mike Williams.

On D, it's a little better.  1/6 linemen, 3/8 LB, 4/8 in the secondary. Lots more seniors in the two deep on that side too, 8 players total with 6 starting.

The numbers for tOSU have more guys in year 2 or less in the system as backups and it's still somewhat limited: 8 on offense, they're all at number 2 except fields, 6 on D, all at number 2. They also roughly kept the same system.

My point is this, getting hammered like we did sucks. It's also not the most surprising thing ever. We've got a young team, seniors that are adjusting to the system, and guys playing out of position (looking at our tackles) because we just didn't have the talent. I'm optimistic, but it's going to take time. When we've been starting young guys, it feels more like we're starting because our older players just weren't good enough. When you look at a team like tOSU, the only young guys they're starting are one's that start because they're that good.

The Huskers need time to develop, we're still going to take our lumps for a year or two (IMO). All I see from this game is that we're not quite there yet and I knew that. Our team right now is all potential and potential is frustrating. When everything goes right, we're going to look really good, but it's going to be inconsistent. I think things start getting interesting next season and start really clicking year 4.

I'm hoping this topic looks silly at the end of November, but it's worth asking about.

We're 2-1 on the season. We NEED to get to a bowl game this year. The premise of this thread is that a 6-6 season won't guarantee a bowl bid. We need seven wins.

That said, where are the other five wins on the schedule? How hard will it be to get there? Or if this is crazy-pants talk, tell me we've got this in the bag.

For the record, based on the first 1/4 of the season, I see it panning out like this:

    Illinois - Win

    Ohio State - Loss

    Northwestern - Win

    Minnesota - Win

    Indiana - Win

    Purdue - Win

    Wisconsin - Loss

    Maryland - Win

    Iowa - Loss

I have pretty good confidence picking wins for:  Illinois, Minnesota, and Indiana.  Illinois being the most confident, with Minnesota and Indiana being basically "pretty sure." I think we out-talent these teams enough that unless we royally screw up, we're not going to lose.

I have pretty good confidence picking losses against: Ohio State, Wisconsin & Iowa. The Buckeyes just have too much talent, and Day has gotten their ducks in a row after last year's curious malaise under Urban. I think Wisconsin & Iowa are still just too good at what they do, too good at playing error-free ball, and too good at finishing games for me to be confident in a win. But I'm less confident we'll lose to these two than to Ohio State.

That leaves Northwestern, Purdue and Maryland. I think we can beat all of these teams - should beat them. But nothing is ever easy against Northwestern, and we've lost to them three of the last four years. With Purdue, I'm just more confident in what Brohm is doing there than I am with what Fleck is doing at Minnesota, and that gives me pause. Plus with it being a road game just before Wisconsin, maybe we overlook them. Still, we have a Bye between Purdue & Wisconsin, so maybe that's an unwarranted fear.  With Maryland, I just don't know what we're going to see. I don't know how they score 60+ points against two early victims, then lose to Temple. Which team do we see? I think we win, but this is also a potential look-ahead game to Iowa, who comes to Lincoln just six days after this game.

So, basically, I have five wins in the bag - the two we already have, plus Illinois, Minnesota & Indiana. Maybe a couple more from Northwestern, Purdue & Maryland.

I think we're going bowling. It's a question of who we beat to get there.

This was the exact same conclusion I came to. I think that in looking at our team, it is very possible that if the OL develops over the course of the season and we're not hit hard by injuries we have a chance at only losing to tOSU. I'm curious how our DL sets up against Wisconsin's OL.

Here's a question.  Did it take opposing teams an entire off season of film review to see how to adjust and stop the O?  Or Is it the perfect storm  loss of Stan, Foster and Oz, BRAND NEW center, shaky OL play etc?

I really thought, fro the dreaded pre-season hype that Noa was see a lot of touches. From reading about him, he'd be perfect to catch the quicks outs/slants into traffic.  Use the "abundance of speed" we have to stretch the defenses sideline to sideline pre-snap and take away their ability to stay in the box.  (Lack of power running game helps D's IMO)

Interesting to see how we bounce back Sat.....

The line play is rough. If you have the heart for it, rewatch our games so far and focus just on the OL. IMO if you do this, you'll see why the offense isn't doing what's needed.

To add to that, we then end up taxing our D. Given enough reps, the D is going to make mistakes, that's what happened against CU in my opinion.

  10. Alright, so first thing first. I'm a complete idiot when it comes to being handy. I've managed to figure out a few things over time, but realistically it's not a strength.

I just bought a house and I'm putting together closet organizers. The one my wife and I bought came with a shelf that we have to cut down to size. The original board is 48x14 (https://closetmaid.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/en/closetmaid-us/closetstorage/woodclosetorganizers/selectivestopshelf#mc_tab_1) I need to get it down to about 21x14. I unfortunately suck at fine motor skills, so I don't know if my hacksaw is going to work for the job. Does anyone have a good/cheap thought on how I could make this work?

    Thanks.

ESPN had incorrect rushing stats when I originally looked.  I thought they seemed high but I didn't realize they were wrong until after I posted that.

I still think the rushing offense was OK.  Not great but not terrible.  Taking out sacks, we had 40 carries for 217 yards - 5.4 ypc.

Dedrick Mills seems to be not helpful.  8 carries for 24 yards.  Washington and Martinez (less sacks) had 28 carries for 176 yards - 6.2 ypc.  That's a pretty solid day.

I was ok with the rushing game. I'm with you, I'm not fully understanding Mills role in the offense. He doesn't seem to have the vision I would want. I feel like he'll get us 3 yards and call it a day.

For me the problem seems to be that if JD goes quiet, the passing game disappears. I'm not sure where to go from here, but I think it's going to be a long season if we are stubborn about sticking with Mills and no one else steps up at WR.

  12. Chad,

Just wanted to say thanks for all you've done to give all of us Husker fans a home for so long. I can easily say that without the forum here, my passion for the team and for the people who support the team would not be nearly as strong.

    David,

Welcome aboard. Looking forward to seeing what happens as the worlds merge.

We don't need anything like that to have a shot at our division.  We had the team that won our division beat - handled them for 55 minutes - before giving it away at the end.  We only lost to the team that won our conference by five points at their place.

We are MUCH closer than needed a 09-style defense to have a shot at our division.  We had a shot at our division with what we had last year.

My read on all of this is that we're going to have a few years of not entirely knowing what we have as the roster works towards stability. It feels like we're making progress almost everywhere, but it will take seasons where nothing goes wrong for another year or two for us to have a real good season. Our roster needs depth in some places and top end talent at others. It's just not quite there yet. I do feel as though our coaches are doing what they have to though and turning over the roster at a good clip.

I don't think we're far, but I do think it's going to feel a bit like two steps forward and a step to a step and a half back at times for another year. My hope is that with a more reasonable schedule this year we build optimism that isn't warranted and maybe lose our bowl game and in 2020 we carry that optimism and have a team and schedule that can live up to it. By 2021 which should be another harder year (I think) we have a tough team that can compete even in difficult schedule years.
