I'll admit Penix rarely had much time, but he seemed locked into his primary receiver and was making that throw regardless, even when other receivers had gained far more separation. And he sailed a few of those open throws in a way great QBs rarely do. Even before the injury he just looked spooked, and as leadership goes he wasn't able to spark much of anything among his teammates. By then the OC went to the super short passing game, which played into the Michigan defense. Husky offense looked uncertain and off-rhythm, and that wasn't entirely on the Michigan D. It was a Big Game mojo problem for the whole team and coaching staff.

I think his draft status takes a minor hit, but Penix still goes in the first round. It's always hard to tell who translates into the NFL. I wouldn't have guessed C J Stroud myself.

Looks like it came down to Mich rushing only 4 and getting right through to Penix.  Another second and he sees a 30 yard gain on the left.

Once you know how the rest of the game plays out, it's easier to say what could/should have been done.

At the time - 3rd & Goal with 2:44 left - the decision was between making Texas use a time out or going for more points, which would have made Texas score two TDs, not a TD and a FG.  I don't think going for more points was a bad choice.

Texas didn't even need to use any of their timeouts to get inside Washington's 10 yard line.  And they could have saved about as much as a timeout would have saved by kicking the FG earlier on the ensuing drive.  So I don't think it's accurate to say Texas wouldn't have touched the ball again.  Too many variables.

We can wind it back to the 3rd quarter to see where UW may have save 20 seconds.  Of course Texas calls different plays once a butterfly beats its wings.

The incomplete pass was on the previous possession.

Agreed.  Keep the ball.  Win the game.

I've never heard of people talking about clock management on the 3rd to last drive.  That being said Penix threw it away and should have just taken a sack or even run oob under the newfangled rule.

How often does both head coaches get fired after the same game? Kinda amusing the winning coach was fired first.

Was the MSST coach not labelled interim?  He had to have been rushed into it after the tragic death of Mike Leach.

Aaah. I didn’t consider that the playoff seeding for the new 12T playoff may be a bit different than the current system. IDK how it’s setup but it would make some sense to have conference champions trumping some in the overall rankings thus B1G #2 moving down below 2 other conf champs.

Honestly I was just surprised that tOSU was #1 and ahead of both Michigan and UGA. Maybe meatchicken is being punished in the poll for their cheating scandal but IMO they have been the most dominant team thus far this season.

I'm still on the edge about Michigan.  Their toughest teams on their schedule so far have been UNLV and Rutgers.  At the same time yeah they've definitely been all dominating victories.  I feel like we'll really know once they play a team with a good defensive line imo which so far they haven't.

UGA's schedule is somehow worse than that of Michigan.  The two teams combined have zero top 25 wins and only a few in the top 50.

ND Joe has a fair point, but Frost’s ineptitude led to losing so many close games, that it was beyond anything statistically related.  With this year, Rhule has a close loss with Minnesota, and two “close wins”’ with Illinois and Northwestern.  Rhule’s coaching has helped NU have the confidence to win the last 2.

Regarding the original post, the Big Ten West has always been the weaker division, but this year is even worse due to QB injuries, coaching changes, and other factors. I do believe that NU’s play has improved, most significantly on defense. The special teams and game management has also improved, which has helped with the offense getting slightly worse and turnovers continuing to be a problem.

I just checked.  It says your yards per play and avg points appear to be the same as last year, about 80/120.

    Both things are true.

The B1G West is a turd of a division. But, Nebraska's doing a good job of making the most of its opportunities. The B1G West has been bad for awhile and yet Nebraska has rarely made it to November still in the division hunt.

It's actually pretty balanced and most teams are only tiny favorites or dogs.  You lost a lot of close games last year and new it is evening out.

With Stanford and Cal joining the ACC, something Notre Dame was lobbying for. Doesn't it make more sense that Notre Dame would more likely join the ACC then B1G now??

Notre Dame has history with those schools and they already have a big relationship with the ACC in other sports.

Nah, we would wind up in a rivalry with Appalachia St.

Arguably, poll system is the best way to motivate dominance from start to finish. And it typically pitted the two best teams against each other when B1G or PAC10 wasn’t involved. Will be interesting to see how things change

Not arguing polls vs playoff, but a poll system emphasizes the need to be great from start to finish. Outside of split natties because of Rose Bowl, not many people argue who the national champion should have been. It’s typically only about who got left out (and why they deserved to lose to the eventual champion).

I hope something happens (in)organically to the sport which would create more parity because by the end of the season there are maybe 2-3 teams who have a legit shot at beating the “best team on paper.” Maybe expanding the playoff and consolidating the conferences does it.

Either the first part of the season is more important or less.  You can't have both.

Are you nervous about Norte Dame getting lost without a real conference, or what?

The only argument for polls is the fun drama it creates for fans.  And it’s not fair to the players.

Every level of football is based on standings and playoffs; from Pop Warner through Div2, the NFL, the XFL, the AFL, the arena leagues, etc.  Div1 college football (outside of some rec leagues) is the only meaningful system not decided by playoffs.  Is EVERYONE else doing it wrong?

    Here we go again.

Every other level of football tells players which team they will play for.  Should college football adopt geographic restrictions or a draft make the playoff equitable?

I'm not sure why you would ever want a sport settled by people behind a keyboard or in a conference room. You should always want it settled on the field, then there can be no (legitimate) arguments about who won that year.

But not really on the field.  In this NFL model and early season loss on the field is moot for a team that gets good at the end of the season.

I wasn't going to argue with him, but it does.  Teams like TCU/BYU can upset the big teams and cause drama, just like the NCAA basketball tourney.  Sure it's hard for them to win it all, but there are favorites in any sport.  This isn't new, but it's better than random subjectivity and arguing like we've had in college football for all time.

A playoff tells you which team is best equipped to win an elimination tournament.  Pollsters can take into account all factors when deciding which team had the best season.

Do you know what else tells you how your team/conference stacks up again the rest of the country?  A playoff. :)

A playoff tells me which team has recruited depth to play two or more hard games in a row.  That is not a problem in the NFL of course.  There has never been a TCU or BYU to win in the CFP era and I expect that to continue as they have made it worse.

"Notre Dame-Stanford football series, which has been played every year since 1988"

Who cares? That's got to be way down the list of longest series.

Our administrators and their brown noses.  I don't know whether to be surprised that the southern wing of the ACC seems to have no interest in academic schmoozing.

Will ESPN give the ACC more money to cover those 3 teams like FOX did for Oregon and Washington....or would the other teams have to take a lower cut?

Looks like the answer is NO to the additional funds.  ESPN must have the final destination in mind for 'Calford' and it is not the ACC.

Natural Rivalries?  You just keep making this better.

Well as I was saying.  Now you would be in some type of pod with TX/OU/A&M.  That ridiculous long horn network derailed the trajectories of many programs.
