B1G Expansion and more Conference Realignment
gratefullred replied to VectorVictor's topic in The Big Ten
I would be shocked to see UNC leave tobbaco road and split themselves from NC State and Duke. If they were as broke as Maryland, but I don't know that they are in any financial trouble. Kansas would come, but I dont think they get an invite.- 1,115 replies

Different perspective on the new B1G teams
gratefullred replied to lo country's topic in The Big Ten
and here is the problem, the only schools on that list that excite me are UT, A&M, and Florida. A Ga Tech and UNC addition wouldn't do enough for me. -
B1G Expansion and more Conference Realignment
gratefullred replied to VectorVictor's topic in The Big Ten
There is nothing sexy about this. I understand the dollars are moving this along, and there is some gamble as to whether Maryland and Rutgers can deliver these markets to the B1G network but I think it will work dollars wise. Just leaves me with a meh feeling. I will be disappointed if B1G dosent go to 16. I will also be disappointed if the next adds are the Charlotte and Atlanta markets. I want brands that will strengthen the conference. Florida St and Clemson are my choices.- 1,115 replies

B1G Expansion and more Conference Realignment
gratefullred replied to VectorVictor's topic in The Big Ten
This is a very good post. In my mind this theory of expanding into these large markets and then getting these markets to care about college football is risky, and right now these two markets do not care about Rutgers or Maryland. As far as the potential for Rutgers, we shouldn't add schools based on they're potential. I want brand names. I am not sure it would boost the primary rights enough to justify their addition, but if all those tv sets began getting B1G Network on primary cable cha-ching. Also if we are sticking with a contingious footprint this is about the best we can do. However if we can loose this idea of a contingious footprint wouldn't we rather have Florida St and Clemson? These are bigger brands that already have a supporting fan base.- 1,115 replies

The guy will probably be out a year. I would almost bet he takes a med-hardship wherever he goes.

Exactly. That is why you see teams put up a ton of yards on us but no points. That is my prediction for Penn State. They will put up yards on us through the air, but not points. They like to throw those really short passes and wait for an opportunity to go up top. Not sure I would call NU a true Tampa 2. It is similar in that NU plays a lot of 2 deep safties, but the corners do not play zone they play man and you rarely see the MLB covering the deep third like a Brian Urlacher will. The "bend but dont break" result is the same, not quite the traditional Tampa 2.
-
The media is looking at the obivious recruiting advantages the locations of Colombus and Ann Arbor have over Nebraska relating to population. It is the same argument against NU that has been made for the last 40 years. It is also the argument that this is the way the Big10 has been historically and so it will be again. Michigan and OSU have these obivious advantages, but that will not keep NU, Wisconsin, MSU, PSU, and the rest of the league from competing with them. I wouldn't be offended by any media garbage.

I think our safties have played terrible. I remember this guy blowing up QB's off the blitz and I cant understand why no safty since has been able to do the same things.
-
I believe the main reason for the declining D is a result of Bo's first 2 recruiting classes which were poor. The D did improve in Bo's first 3 years to a point of greatness with Callahan's players. It has since declined quickly while relying on Bo's first 2 classes. With those 2 poor classes there is no reason to expect great improvement in year 5. I agree with everything else you said. Bo has 2 weeks to make some changes scheme wise and personel wise. I really believe Bo should get 2 more years to see what he can do with his better classes, but if the wheels come off that might not happen. It's a tough business.
-
I think its talent. Poor recruiting classes in year 1 and 2 for Bo are playing now as juniors and seniors. Steinkuler can be a good player, and will probably be drafted to play DE next level, but to be a DT he needs to get to 290 and cant seem to get over 280. Merideth enough said. Compton is a run stuffer, and could blitz more. He is also a liability in pass D. I don't think he can make an NFL roster. David is a fun player to watch, but his only skill is coming off the edge. Fischer hasn't been playing consistently. he looks OK, always wonder if he recovered from that leg injury. Whaley, enough said. The rest of the guys are young. They could still develop, but arent quite ready to be counted on.

Hockey needs a big donation, its a very expensive sport. I have been thinking about what exactly a new AD would need to do first at NU. NU is at the bottom in terms of sports teams in the B1G. I was thinking a men's soccer team could be kinda cool with natural rivals at Creighton and UNO.

One more thing Tom needs to do before he sails away. I would bet on it happening.

Tom Osborne receives game ball after comeback
gratefullred replied to Nexus's topic in Husker Football
I have been listening to people talk about coach Osborne, and thinking about him and what he has done since the anouncement of his retiring. There are few people if any who can match his accomplishments to a university and entire state. I have heard Bo Schemblecker mentioned and Barry Alverez is similar. The thing I have been thinking about has more about the reasons he had for doing these things. In the world of ultra competitive coaching just look at JoPa to see what people will do to gain an edge. Coach Osborne is as selfless as a man can get. I don't believe he got into coaching for the glory. He left coaching to let Frank take the reins. He served a thankless job in Congress. He only came thank to be AD when asked. I can not think of anyone comparable to Coach Osborne and there never will be another. They broke the mold. -
TMAGIC was a leader tongiht
gratefullred replied to The Red & White Knight's topic in Husker Football
I like our QB, haven't been able to say that in about 2 years. Took the ball all the way down the field before half throwing the ball, and he did it again to open 2nd half. That makes the safties back up, then NU can run the ball again. NU dosen't win that game without Martinez throwing the ball. -
I was really down on our secondary after the game. Wisc really made hay with the PA deep ball, but limiting YAC is a positive.

I am not so sure, we can beat Nebraska.

Thinking about our LB's stopping Miller in space is troubling. -

Think how tough it would have been if he had been elected gov. Listening to 590 and Mitch Sherman yesterday. When he retired in '97 coaching was easier for him than it had ever been, and he retired because he had made a promise to Frank. He gave it up because he had made a promise. I didn't know that, cool dude.

anybody else get the feeling this team is playing possum? I can't understand how they got so bad so soon. Count me still nervous.

Huskers to run base 4-3 defense Saturday
gratefullred replied to HuskerShark's topic in Husker Football
This D is going to look way different in the B1G. Bottom line, can they stop the run? That means seeing base 4-3 D. I know we will see less Evans, but I am more interested in how much Eric Martin plays and where he plays. -
will be interesting to find out in 2014. Make for an interesting 2014 spring game.
-
man this kid was great on a saftey blitz as a soph. Remember that hit on Tanneyhill at A&M? I had high hopes.
-
sense of entitlement??
-
This would not help us stop the run. The NFL is not the B1G. Eric Martin does have a set of skills that a creative coach could use. He can come off the edge or move to inside LB and cover better than Compton. He needs to be on the field every snap.

He really cheats when pulling. It could hurt us someday.
