  1. So he can be a backup to POB in 2017,or even start if POB isn't as good as advertised. Yeah, NU would probably be screwed at that point, but someone has to take the snaps at QB, and we can't always count on the next incoming freshman to be "the man".
  2. POB may be a great talent, but I am not expecting him to light the world on fire as a true frosh. If he were to play regular snaps, I expect him to struggle.
  3. I'm not trying to say we don't need a capable starter, but the backup shouldn't be ignored either. Simply put, we need more quality depth at QB.
  4. The discussion about the possible transfer from Tulane coming to NU, and why Riley is even looking at him. I don't know if that Tulane kid is going to come to NU, let alone beat out Pat O'Brien in 2017. But, I think he could be a solid, veteran backup QB, even if he ends up with 1 year of eligibility. It got me thinking of how often NU has needed the backup QB over the past 10 years. 2006 - Zac Taylor started the whole season and didn't miss any games. Joe Ganz was pretty much a mop-up guy. 2007 - Sam Keller beats out Ganz for #1 job, but breaks his collarbone in 9th game against Texas. Ganz gets the start for last 3 games. 2008 - Ganz is the starter the entire season. I don't remember the backups playing much, other than Patrick Witt coming in for a series after Ganz is concussed against Clemson in the Gator Bowl. 2009 - Zac Lee is the starter at the beginning of the season. He is ineffective in a few games and was benched in favor of Cody Green. Green was not much better, and Lee comes back against OU and holds the job the rest of the way. NU was probably a good QB from winning the conference championship in 2009. 2010 - Taylor Martinez wins the job in fall camp and is amazing the first half of the season. However, a foot injury against Mizzou causes him to miss time and cuts into his speed and elusiveness. NU uses a lot of Rex Burkhead as a Wildcat QB. 2011 - Taylor Martinez is the clear starter and I don't remember him being injured for any part of the season. Backup QB's don't play much at all. 2012 - Repeat of 2011. 2013 - Martinez is injured early in the season, and misses a few games. He tries a comeback against Minnesota, but is put on the shelf for good after that loss. Armstrong and Kellogg split time as the main QB's the rest of the season. 2014 - Armstrong is the starter for the entire season and his backup isn't needed/used much at all. 2015 - Armstrong is the starter, but is forced to miss a game against Purdue. NU is unable to beat a crappy Purdue team with Ryker Fyfe. The defense was mostly to blame, but Riley had Fyfe throw the ball 50 times. So, looking at the past 10 years there were 4 years ('07. '09, '10, '13) where the backup QB was forced to play a decent amount of time, and one more (2015) where the backup had to start and play a full game. I think getting a backup QB that is at least serviceable and not a huge drop off from the starter could be important for NU's success.
  5. Worst case scenario, he ends up being a veteran backup QB that the coaches can turn to if POB gets hurt, and Bush/Darlington are completely worthless as QB's.
  6. Don't forget that he would drive his Cadillac through the campus walk ways to get to his South Stadium office while AD. #shortcut #hedidntgiveaneff
  7. Too many male offspring... Yeah, because his sons were complete failures as football players at NU.
  8. Say what you want about Callahan but the man knew how to call a game 2004 Iowa State begs to differ. He also had some stinkers in 2007 (Missouri, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State).
  9. I assume you mean National Title game appearance. But, yeah, I think Solich is the best of the bunch. It could have been interesting to see what would have happened after 2003, with a new group of assistants and Frank taking on more of a CEO role.
  10. Are you surprised? The talent has been significantly decreasing since the late 1990s.
  11. Again, I'm not trying to knock the guy or the hire. I was just making a general comment about the sports coaching profession.
  12. Please show how riley hiring this guy as a GA is nepotism. Are they related or something? He is using the term in a broad sense...Riley and Haseltts are buddies so there is the link. True nepotism, no, but clearly it is a sweet hook up and one that goes on in coaching all the time. I don't think he (or me) mean it in a bad way, it is just how it is in coaching as it is in many many areas of work. It is not what you know...it is who you know! Everyone hires people they know. Even the great savior Scott Frost hired people he knows from his days at Nebraska. My comment wasn't taking a shot at Riley. It was just a broad sense of the sports world in that people will say "Well, this Haslett kid could be a good coach, his dad was a defensive coordinator and head coach in the NFL for a long time." I have never been asked in a job interview "How did your father's success prepare you for this job." My comment was just general commentary. I know there are people that have generations of lawyers or doctors or other professionals, but sports coaching takes it to another step IMO.
  13. Is there any bigger nepotism racket than coaching a sport?
  14. I would think that practice squad players are on the sideline for every game. I know they aren't part of the 53-man roster, but they are part of the team and organization.
  15. I think his basketball teammates would understand that Fant isn't "quitting" on the team. His future is in football, and he is taking an out of town visit. If he misses a game or two, it's not a huge deal. He's not skipping out on the team during the district or state tournament. If anything, I am impressed that Fant is playing basketball at all during his senior season. He could have very easily said "I don't want to risk tearing up my knee or having any other major injury before I get to college."
  16. I would hope he's better than Gangwish. We can't be satisfied with serviceable defensive ends. I thought Matty was referencing development of size.... It didn't cross my mind that he was talking ability. He knows Gangwish is serviceable and average I commend Gangwish for putting in a TON OF WORK in the weight room to become a starter and a Blackshirt for NU. It would be great if all of NU's players were able to progress that much from high school to finishing college. My point is that if we want NU to get back to winning championships, NU needs to bring in stud, high-talent, and fast guys rushing off the edge. Other than Gregory showing glimpses of that during his time at NU, it's been a while since NU has had a dominant player at DE.
  17. Well, he's a high school coach, so my guess is that he will be nothing more than a graduate assistant at NU. That's a pretty typical career move for a lot of young coaches.
  18. Supposedly Lewis did well in the practices leading up to the game. That can be as important as anything. Most scouts see him as a guard in the NFL.
  19. The advocates for an 8 team playoff took a major hit this year by the ratings dip. This can be easily remedies by moving playoff games to January 1st.I agree, although I would prefer to see the champ game on the 1st with semis the week before. I think the layoff is a big part of the problem. CFP could own December like BB owns March IMO.I would prefer keeping the playoff games on the 1st regardless of venue. Then move the National Championshio game to the following Saturday, Monday night sucks if your team makes it and you wanna celebrate. The NFL playoffs are in full swing by the 2nd weekend of January, and they play Saturday and Sunday. The National Championship game isn't moving off Monday night.Like I said move the game up to like the first weekend after January 1st. If the NFL has already taken that Saturdau over, do the game on a Fridau night. I hate the Monday night time slot.If the semis are on Jan. 1st or 2nd, they need to go into the 2nd week of January, so it will always compete with the NFL time slots.Friday night TV is the worst time slot for TV channels, Monday is one of the best. It's not moving off the Monday slot. New Years eve is an awful spot for the college Semi's. And I think the college final would hold up fine on a Friday. Are you the guy from the CFP who also thought the TV ratings would be fine on New Year's Eve?

  22. Wherever I go, I always find you complaining about something... Sorry, I'm a baseball uniform purist. It's not really complaining, just giving my opinion on it. It's not like I am not going to support the baseball team because I don't like the new uniforms. I also don't like the flat bill hats and long, pajama pants that the team wears. Call me a crotchety old man.
  23. I thought he was kind of a jerk in college, but he has done well for himself since his days at NU and he speaks fondly of his days in Lincoln. Good luck being LeBron's puppet, Tyronn.
  24. Is Tyronn Lue next up in Cleveland? Dave Blatt has been fired.

Well, Lue has been given a multi-year contract. Must be nice to be LeBron's buddy.
