  1. Typically within the first couple of weekends in August each year. From Thursday through Sunday, with lots of different types of music for entertainment as well. It's fun times. Like Lyons said, probably not as glamourous as it might sound... but fun. Last year's, by example, was Aug. 9-12, and I think it's typically been that second full weekend of the month.

  3. Why in the world would they move Ribfest out there? There's so little access to that area - the only way to get in there is Sun Valley Blvd, which only empties into N. 10th St/Cornhusker Highway or O Street. That's a terrible idea. Ribfest should move to that open area by The Cube, just south of the Arena. That's also where they should locate most/all of the Farmer's Market - near new parking structures, and close to ingress/egress throughout the Haymarket. I was going to post the same thing as Vanderoh (and if you look at the video they (the City and the committee overseeing the project) released last Summer, they show some clips of a big outdoor concert going on, which is shown at the facility mentioned in the article), but got beat to the punch. I would imagine RibFest will likely move over there because of the spacing needed and the area to the South of the arena likely not being large enough for what they want, whereas a festival space like that one would give them a lot more room. While I agree about access, you do have Sun Valley and the bridge going over to it for access from the Haymarket as well. I know past Ribfest articles have talked about how other rib vendors would like to come, but they've limited it to 6 (I think that's the right number) vendors because of limited spacing around Pershing, and the current vendors are treated so well that new openings in the lineup are relatively scarce. So I can imagine opening it up to 2, 4, 6, or however many additional participants would be seen as a big advantage for the festival. I could definitely see the complaint over lunchtime during the week about how far away it is from buildings, but if they choose to move it (and it certainly sounded like the article was listing it only as an example, and that nothing final had been decided on it), I have to believe they decided that the advantages to the new space would outweigh any disadvantages to moving it. I could also make the argument about parking being practically impossible with it being by Pershing now, and the inconvenience the current type of setup does for those that work in that area... but again... negatives v. positives to every location out there. Have had plenty of memorable evenings with the family where it is now, that's for sure.
  4. Here's the rule I was able to get from the AVCA handbook on Sand VB: PLAYING AND PRACTICE SEASONS - SAND VOLLEYBALL, WOMEN ’S Regulations for computing the women’s sand volleyball playing season are set forth in Bylaw 17.1. (See Figure 17-1 and Figure 17-2.) (Adopted: 1/15/11 effective 8/1/11) 17.17.1 Length of Playing Season. The length of an institution’s playing season in women’s sand volleyball shall be limited to a 132-day season, which may consist of two segments (each consisting of consecutive days) and which may exclude only required off days per Bylaw 17.1.6.4 and official vacation, holiday and final examination periods during which no practice or competition shall occur. (Adopted: 1/15/11 effective 8/1/11) 17.17.1.1 Women’s Volleyball Student-Athletes Participating in Women’s Sand Volleyball. Women’s volleyball student-athletes listed as participants for women’s sand volleyball must participate fully in women’s sand volleyball practices. If student-athletes are practicing women’s volleyball skills unrelated to women’s sand volleyball, such practices must be counted in the institution’s established segment in women’s volleyball. (Adopted:1/15/11 effective 8/1/11) 17.17.2 Preseason Practice. A member institution shall not commence practice sessions in women’s sand volleyball prior to September 7 or the institution’s first day of classes for the fall term, whichever is earlier. (Adopted:1/15/11 effective 8/1/11) 17.17.3 First Contest. A member institution shall not play its first contest (game or scrimmage) with outside competition in women’s sand volleyball prior to the following dates: (Adopted: 1/15/11 effective 8/1/11) (a) Nonchampionship Segment. September 7 or the institution’s first day of classes for the fall term, whichever is earlier. (b) Championship Segment. The first Thursday in March (see Figure 17-2). 17.17.4 End of Regular Playing Season. A member institution shall conclude all practice and competition(games and scrimmages) in women’s sand volleyball by the conclusion of the recognized national intercollegiate sand volleyball championship events. (Adopted: 1/15/11 effective 8/1/11) 17.17.5 Number of Dates of Competition. 17.17.5.1 Maximum Limitations—Institutional. A member institution shall limit its total playing schedule with outside competition in women’s sand volleyball during the institution’s women’s sand volleyball playing season to 16 dates of competition, including not more than two during the segment in which the NCAA championship is not conducted, except for those dates of competition excluded under Bylaws 17.17.5.3 and 17.17.5.4. (Adopted: 1/15/11 effective 8/1/11) Also on the AVCA website I found this under General Sand Q&A - Q. When is the Sand Volleyball season? A. Sand Volleyball is a spring team sport, just like softball and baseball. The DII playing season may begin after February 1 and ends with the school year; the DI playing season starts the 1st Thursday in March and ends eight (8) weeks later or the end of the school year, whichever comes first. Q. How many competitions must we play? How many can we play? A. You must play at least eight (8) dates with three of the competitions being dual matches. The maximum number of competitions is sixteen (16) dates. So to answer your question, it looks like the season begins the first Thursday in March and ends eight weeks later or the end of the school year, whichever comes first. I'd guess most would go further than eight weeks, so that would probably be the timeframe. Included a few of those other things in there for those that might be interested in them as well.
  5. Honestly, trying to take five from special teams by comparing kickers and returners becomes, to me, an effort in futility, because it's just really tough to compare those accomplishments. Obviously, in those respective groups, I don't think you have a returner yet that can touch JR, and Alex gets the nod on kickers, easily. I don't know that I've paid close enough attention to returners to make much a value judgment beyond Johnny. For me, the kickers come down to four/five -- Henery, the Browns (close together enough to be tied for 2 for me), Maher, Erstad.
  6. I believe, RRJR, that the original articles said that the regular spring practices/games wouldn't be impacted regarding continuing on with them. I think that's what I recall, anyway. Have to see what happens as the time gets closer, I guess, as to what actually happens.
  7. Oh, agreed. The NCAA has never been one for putting anything anywhere close to a place that allows sports betting. The likelihood that a Final Four would come is remote, but no harm in promoting it that way. Was a great mockup and the place looks like it would be amazing to watch an event at. Lots of hoops to jump through yet, it sounds like, but wouldn't surprise me if they're able to get it done, especially since it sounds like the money will come from private donations; at least that's what it sounded like to me (outside of the TIF incentives they're needing to push through the legislature, of course). It'll certainly put them even more on the radar screen for the PAC, though, even if they don't get there. Especially if the Big XII is able to survive and expand.
  8. +1s to both. It's going to be a tough slog for points all year. But you look at how prolific some of the teams we played are with their scoring, then consider that we held Michigan to approximately 20 points below their season average, and the last time I looked (granted probably 2 weeks ago or so now) we had held both Creighton and Oregon to season lows on scoring. We just don't have 1 really natural scorer that can be counted on to get x amount of points, or can be counted to get a bucket at a crucial time in a game. We'll get there, but I think everybody knew (and I was predicting 6 wins in conference before the season and before conference play, so I try to think of myself as pretty optimistic about what this team can achieve, and even I'm included in that everybody) that this would be a difficult year and an uphill climb the whole time. I think those that follow the team at all like what they see and are very optimistic for what Miles can do here. Doesn't make losing some of the opportunities we've had this year any better, but makes it easier to understand and have hope for the future.
  9. Aye, mmg. That was the thing that caught my eye too. And honestly, I would have been surprised (and a little scared, even, of the implications of him making such a statement) if he had come out and said he was planning on adding hockey. Nice to have any tidbit we can get, though. Thanks for the update, knapp!
  10. Since I hadn't seen this linked here (and this seems to have become our defacto stadium/expansion type thread) - thought this was interesting. UNLV looking to build a new 60K facility... with a 100-yard video screen as one of the main features. Like the design of the stadium, and I thought the visuals of their mockups looked pretty stunning. Here's the USAToday link, for those interested: http://www.usatoday.com/story/gameon/2013/01/16/unlv-new-stadium-100-yard-video-screen/1839537/ The following is a link within that article to the Las Vegas Sun article. That article actually has a slideshow that you can bring up that has seven different mockups of the stadium: http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2013/jan/11/unlv/ An interesting idea I heard proposed at least one place is that this stadium might be the kicker that puts UNLV over the top in terms of pushing for a PAC12 invite. Not sure I buy that, but a project of this scale certainly couldn't hurt their prospects. One thing to tie into Nebraska's expansion: The new facility would have several traditional suites, just like Nebraska's expansions all have. That's nothing new. But one that I hadn't heard of before was that there would be six 300-seat VIP suites. That just floored me. Can't imagine the luxuries such a suite would have. I've always thought regular suites were posh, but then you talk about something like this. Gads. Anyhow, thought it was interesting in terms of a new stadium being built. Knapp, if you or one of the other mods doesn't think this should be here, please move to the appropriate venue. Thanks!
  11. For those interested, below is the link to the WCHA website. Has the standings as of the end of last weekend, and a lot of pages and info on the teams in the conference. WCHA is, in my opinion, a top 2 conference in college hockey along with Hockey East. After realignment next year, UNO will continue to be in what I consider a top 3 conference, the NCHC, along with Hockey East and B1G. NCHC is basically taking the best of the two Western hockey conferences, the WCHA and the CCHA, sans, of course, those moving to the B1G, and placing them in one conference together. The ones that were basically left from those conferences will combine to form a new version of the WCHA. Link to WCHA below: http://www.wcha.com/men/index.php And a link to the NCHC website: http://nchchockey.com/
  12. Big Ten didn't have six schools (number needed to sponsor a sport by the conference, I believe) until this year. Penn State is officially independent this year in hockey, and the B1G will start sponsoring the sport starting '13-'14. College hockey is a greatly different animal from most sports. Several schools are DII that sponsor only 1 or 2 sports at the DI level. Not a ton, but several. There are only 58? 59? schools that sponsor at the DI level, if I recall correctly. Not long after the B1G announced they would be sponsoring hockey next year, a group of schools that are basically hockey first schools formed a new DI hockey conference of their own. Started with 6, added two later. I think they have 2 DII schools and one DIII school in the 8 team conference that sponsor hockey at the DI level. The rest are all DI schools. The National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC or the National) consists of North Dakota, Denver, UNO, Minnesota-Duluth, Western Michigan, Saint Cloud State University (in MN), Colorado College, and U of Miami, OH. CC is the DIII, and UMD and SCSU are DII. WMU and SCSU were the two added later. But basically, several power players in college hockey are likely not schools you would have heard of unless you follow college hockey pretty closely, mainly because their names don't resonate anywhere else. Yeah... I know WAY too much about college hockey. It's fun to watch, though.
  13. Let's be honest, though--ShaggyBevo is just regurgitating excrement that Chip Brown spews, speckled with info from the West Virginia bloggers that broke their movement to the Big XII. Save for the WV addition, they did the same thing during the 2009 imbroglio (well, imbroglio for them at any rate...), and they were off-base then. You should the denial that most UNC fans are in. It is quite entertaining. "Popcorn eating GIF" entertaining Definitely. You go to UNC's Scout site, it's entertaining to read. They won't believe a word of it, and believe everything regarding realignment only comes from the mouths of the WVU tweeters/bloggers. GTech's site is interesting too, though they're a lot more matter of fact ("not going to believe it til it happens") type of attitude. As for Boise, even though it would be yet again another conference move, I have to believe a PAC invite will be the last move they make. Academics might be an issue there, though. Boise isn't that far (less than 50 years) removed from becoming a 4-year institution. Not judging them regarding that, but certainly would make it more difficult to accept from the PAC schools. Would certainly be a good FB addition.
  14. Blah... blah... BLAH. Good grief. Agreed, TS, if it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all. Reminds me of Hee-Haw... Gloom, Despair, and Agony on me... Whoa... Deep Dark Depression, Excessive Misery... Whoa... If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all... Whoa... Gloom, Despair, and Agony on me. Fortunately... we have a bright-eyed coach that sees the positives... and can joke about the negatives.... dang.
  15. The Mavs have one guy they nominated for the Hobey Baker award (basically college hockey's Heisman, given to the best player in the nation each year). His name is Ryan Walters. He leads the nation in goals scored right now, and has been a fantastic player for the team this year. The award has the ability to go and vote for your player. It counts for 1% of the total in determining who the 10 finalists will be. Not a lot, but gives the opportunity to contribute to the cause. The link for the Hobey Baker award site where you can vote is here: http://www.hobeybakeraward.com/page/show/179324-home The Mavs also are in first place in their conference, the WCHA, right now. Latest in the year they've been in first in conference ever. In honor of that, they're having a special price on tickets for Michigan Tech on February 1 and February 2. The upper bowl are $9.41 (in honor of their record being 9-4-1 in conference play right now). Less than half normal, and the fees were very minimal (normal being $20 and over $6 in fees). The lower bowl are $19 (in honor of the 19 points they have in the conference standings right now). Not sure how those compare to normal. Anyhow, I'm not an advocate of buying them, just putting it out there for anyone that might be interested in attending, might be the best prices of the season. Link is below for those that might want tickets: http://omahasteam.com/tickets/hockey/single-game-tickets For those interested in the MTU tickets, the opening page they had popping on omavs.com said the offer was only good through tipoff of tonight's game against Denver. On that linked page, it makes no mention of that, but I thought I'd at least warn people if they're interested what the page said. Just offered more as a PSA than anything.
  16. Aye, Dykstra to Pepperdine. She wanted to only play sand. If you go by the article in the LJS, sounds like the #1 team could be freshman Alexa Strange and transfer Kelsey Robinson, because of an extensive background in sand. But the way Wagner presented it, that sounded a LOT more like his assumption than any particular comment of Cook. In fact in the paragraphs just preceding that comment, Cook even says he couldn't guarantee Robinson she'd play sand, but he'd see what he could do. Just seems to me that the chemistry between a pair would play a LOT more substantial role than the amount of experience playing sand would have on the pairings. Be interesting to see what info pops up over the next few weeks.
