  1. If Bubba elects to go pro our Qb's look like this

    Tmart,Carnes,Kellogg

Broekemeier (Probably the scout team guy for this year)

Turner - Could switch if there's injuries

I know Bronson Marsh would love a shot at QB given his past statements and background. I think the new offense would fit him pretty well. Even though he played safety in the spring and did a good job, in light of Cody's transfer I would love to see Marsh audition at the QB spot this fall.

In old parlimentary style.....What say you???

  2. Texas will definitely be less of a focal-point over time but we'll still recruit it, like we did before the Big12, and we've always recruited nationally. We'll have an improved presence in the Big10 states(already have two commits for this class) and the improved tv-coverage should help national recruiting. We already have signficantly more offers out in Florida than Texas. Things are evolving, we'll be fine.

Totally agree. That's why I don't understand why some of the national people bring this up. Heck I even saw a scouting report in athlon by an 'opposing coach' asking where Nebraska was going to recruit, wondering if Nebraska would be welcome in Texas and CALIFORNIA. California!!! What the heck does that have to do with leaving the big 12? That was the most bizarre & worthless scouting report that I have ever seen. I can't hardly believe that came from a coach.

  3. I'd say they rank the same as it depends on what defense your running and what kind of offense your playing that week and the fact that there pretty close to the same thing. If you can put your corners on an island that allows you to do more with your other players, so good corner play is important. Safety play is important though as noted above. I do agree that it all start's upfront and that DLine is number 1.

  4. To the guy that said I'm bashing the Cotton kids, Ben Cotton was definately a scholarship tight end, if BO doesn't hire Barney, He's playing elsewhere. By the way, I really doubt if Ben plays any pro ball, but he's the most legit of the 3. I have found out since i started this thread that you really do get a huge dicount on tuition if your folks work for a college, pretty much next to nothing, even at a small college. Not sure if NCAA issues are involved here, but what about some poor kid that really NEEDS his tuition to be paid or he never gets a chance at college? I'm not bashing the Cotton kids at all, but if their daddy didn't work for the athletic department, they get no offer from BIG RED, period!! If anything, I'm bashing their daddy.

I will retract the bashing comment as that may have been a little strong. I agree it's great to see kids get offer who really need the financial help but that doesn't come into play here from Pelini's perspective. The fact that their Dad works for the athletic department doesn't come into play with the offer either IMO.

To me this is what runs through my mind.

    1) Who's left on the board at that position?

    2) How does he fit in?

    3) Is he going to make grades?

    4) Is he going to work?

    5) Will he keep developing?

    6) Is he going to cause problems?

    7) I love the cute chicks on campus.

    8) Will he be happy at the U.

    9) How are his hands?

    10) How are his measurables?

    11) What's his blocking like?

So basically, I think when it comes down to it, the offer was made because of who was left on their TE board and what they think they will be getting. Knowing what they are getting out of the first 2 probably helped the third.

When I watched video of Ott and Cotton, I thought they were pretty close. I thought that Ott looked a little stiff but seemed more physical. He might be a hair faster. The thing I noticed about Cotton was his feet. I thought Cotton had good feet. It sounds like the coaches projected Ott to defense though so that probably why Cotton got an offer and Ott didn't. The recruiting board at RE looks pretty good right now if I had to guess. TE is a huge need and they needed to get one on board. It's nice to have a name penciled their now. Would like to get Orlando to as he would be a Hback type.

  5. Too many people here are looking at his stats from his time at NC St, and are trying to use them as a predictor for what he'll do at UW.

What he was asked to do at NC St, and what he'll be asked to do for UW will be 2 entirely different things.

For NC St, he spent his time in a shotgun offense, throwing 40+ times per game.

At UW, I would guess 70% of our pass game is out of play action, because of our strong run game. Our QBs typically have a lot of easy throws - lots of TE & WR motion, lots of guys crossing the field off play action, lots of clearing routes. That's why we usually have a high completion &, and a low number of Ints. It's a function of the offense's design. He won't have to make play after play with his arm. He'll have to complete the easy throws, and move the chains. He will give us one thing Tolzien could not - the ability to escape pressure when the pocket breaks down, and get some yards with his legs.

For those questioning the rest of the team, the OL really isn't a worry at all. We're moving the RT to LT. Kid has been a rock for us at RT, and has the athletic ability to play LT. The starting LG will be a kid who started at C as a true freshman, before a high ankle sprain ended his year. He redshrited last year, due to our OL depth. Bielema often said he was the best OL in practice last fall. Kid is 6-3 330. Just a mauler. C & RG will be the same. RT will be either Josh Oglesby, a 2 year starter who redshirted last fall with a knee injury, or else likely Rob Havenstein, a 6-7 340 RS Fr.

LB was mentioned earlier. We get Chris Borland back, moving from WLB to MLB. He redshirted last year with a broken arm. Kid is the best football player on the team. We could play him at RB, TE, FB, DE, LB, S, or K - he would be an impact player wherever he was. At SLB, Mike Taylor has fully recovered from an ACL 2 years ago, that had him playing at half speed last year. We will have a new WLB this fall.

At S, we lose Jay Valai. Great attitude, great leader, great locker room guy, but a lousy tackler and cover man. Was a huge hitter, but tried to make every tackle at full speed, and often overran the ball carrier or whiffed completely because he simply refused to break down and make a tackle under control. What we lose in leadership, we make a huge gain in actual playmaking ability.

Outside of QB, our real worry was finding a DE who could replace the impact we got from JJ Watt. We have a lot of good, young DEs, just no one who has shown he can be that guy. We have a couple of outstanding athletes at DE, but so far their production hasn't matched their ability. I'm hoping our S&C guy can flip one of their switches, and get one of the guys to play to their ability. He did it 2 years ago with O'Brien Schofield, and did it last year with JJ. He has a way of really reaching guys and getting them to seize the opportunity before them.

DE, WR, & CB will be a concern for me, until I actually see guys making plays. Everywhere else, we have above average depth, and at some positions we're deeper than we've ever been - RB, TE, OL, DT, LB. That's why getting Wilson was such a big deal. We could run a QB out there that we could win with, but he wouldn't have the game experience that Wilson is going to bring.

    Nice scouting report. Thank you.

  6.

Word from a guy in the know elsewhere is that it will likely be LT-Yoshi, LG A-Rod, C Caputo, RG-Jones, and RT-Sirles. Marcel is moving to guard(he knows the line, we're trying to get our best five out there, and he's quick enough). Qvale doesn't pull quickly enough, which is important in the new scheme. Big-boy is strong though, moving to tackle. Thompson, Moudy, and Cotton will back-up at guard. Cotton could really push.

Moore is probable to make the two-deep and burn his shirt. Reeves could burn his shirt too. Klatchko is less likely but possible.

Wow. Thanks for the info, that's good stuff.

  7. This is an outstanding thread. Very thoughtful comments by all.

Tough call. On one hand I don't think TO will make a change and will leave that evaluation/decision to the next administration. IMO baseball and Basketball situations are different in that baseball has the facilities and used to have the momentum, while Basketball is just getting started with new facilities. I think the recruiting classes for the next 2 years will be HEAVILY scrutinized (in addition to the w/l record) and if they aren't scoring some talent than the clock will be ticking down.

On the other hand the new arena speeds up that clock. If they can't sell the new suites, TO may be looking at a change in coaching to generate some excitement and sell those suites.

My guess is no change will be made.

  8. If Nebraska is a bad apple who were the worms?

This is a stupid article. Nebraska left because of concerns about stability. If UT hadn't been shopping around AND talking about bringing 5 other teams with them, then there would be no talk of bad apples, life would be the same. The fact is though UT was shopping around and MU was showing interest in the big 10. I wonder what Barry would of wrote if Texas went to the Pac-10 along with 5 other teams? Probably would still blame it on Nebraska and Osborne, because he's a hater.

  9. I really don't understand why people are bashing these kids. Ben is one of our top 2 TE's and is the best blocking TE we have. Jake looked very good at RT during the spring and is just a Redshirt Freshmen. Sam looks like a decent athlete at a position of need. The Cotton's appear to be late bloomers and you know what you are getting. The coaching profession is precarious at best. If your kids get offers they should take them as having 3 kids in college would prove to pretty draining if you don't have a job. I would also say if Pelini and the staff feel a player merits an offer than they get one. They are their own person and shouldn't be treated any differently either for or against regardless of who the father is.

Is Barney the greatest coach in the world? Maybe not, but he has some very good points. He is a good recruiter. He is loyal to the University. He knows his stuff as Bo has said that many times. He has a good understanding of the big picture. They are getting the numbers back in the OL and that will help him. The offense is changing and that will help him. He is getting more help with Garrison and Stai and that will help them. I feel very positive that we are headed in the right direction. I am willing to give it some time. There were some good signs last year.

  10. I count Marcel Jones as a starter because he was a starter in 2009. Yoshi has good experience so we are really talking about replacing 2 guys. With the new approach I think the younger players will be fine and we have good young talent. I think they are going to be surprised. I am thinking our offense will be better than people think.

  11. With Kourtzidis commiting to FSU and the grade issue with the Juco, Cotton got his chance to move into the offer list. I thinking the same thing may happen with Shoff eventually.

I think this will turn out to be a solid pickup. While we are signing a small class and there's lots of time less, I would feel a little more comfortable if we had better a half dozen players in the fold going into the fall.

  12. We are in his top 5. Wants to play WR, but we are recruiting him as a DB. I don't think its a big deal though.

Hmmm...we recruited Marshall Faulk as a DB and he wanted to stay at RB and did.

    You never know....

Jack Pierce has a good recruiting story about Faulk. This isn't an exact account but you should get the gist. Faulk was actually recruited as an athlete. A number of coaches wanted him to play at the positions they were coaching. Basically they were fighting over him.... Anyway Jack knew that Faulk was dead set against playing DB and told the coaches that before Faulk came on his visit. Anyway one coach who will remain nameless ran into Faulk while he was getting the tour and told him he would look good at DB.....the rest is history.....

This story was told on the Huskers Legends show.
