The Wildcats are 19-11 on the season and 7-10 in the Big Ten and are assured of finishing ninth in the standings, but could fall to the No. 11 seed with a loss on Sunday. Northwestern brings a two-game winning streak into Sunday’s contest following Thursday’s 71-61 win at Penn State. The Wildcats are led by third-year coach Chris Collins, who spent 13 seasons at Duke under Hall of Fame Coach Mike Krzyzewski before taking the Northwestern job prior to the 2013-14 season. The Wildcats, who are averaging 72.3 points per game and shooting 36 percent from 3-point range, feature a strong backcourt in sophomore Bryant McIntosh and senior Tre Demps. McIntosh averages 13.8 points per game and is second in the conference with 6.7 assists per game. Demps is 12th in the Big Ten in scoring at 15.4 ppg and leads the Wildcats with 65 3-pointers. Purdue, which returned four starters and 11 letterwinners from a team that went 21-13 before losing to Cincinnati in the second round of the 2015 NCAA Tournament. The Boilermakers opened the season with 11 straight wins and were ranked as high as ninth in the country in December and have remained in the polls throughout the year. Coach Matt Painter’s team has been one of the Big Ten’s best defensive teams, holding opponents to 39 percent shooting, including just 31 percent from 3-point range. Purdue is among the national rebounding leaders with a +11.2 rebounding margin. In Big Ten play, Purdue has been outstanding at home, going 7-1, but is just 3-5 away from Mackey Arena. Purdue’s strength is its frontcourt with the duo of A.J. Hammons (14.7 ppg, 7.9 rpg) and Caleb Swanigan (9.9 ppg, 8.4 rpg), as the pair ranks among the Big Ten rebounding leaders. In all, nine players average at least five points per game. In addition, 7-foot-2 sophomore Isaac Hass comes off the bench and adds 10 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.

Under fifth-year coach Pat Chambers, PSU went 9-4 during non-conference action, including a win over DePaul and a one-point loss to Colorado before struggling early in Big Ten play. PSU was just 2-8 in its first 10 conference games before regrouping down the stretch. The Nittany Lions feature a pair of solid scorers in senior Brandon Taylor and sophomore Shep Garner. Taylor leads PSU in both scoring (16.6 ppg) and rebounding (6.5 rpg) while Garner averages 13.7 points and 3.1 assists per game. Taylor earned Big Ten co-Player-of-the-Week honors on Monday, averaging 17.5 ppg and 11.5 rpg in two wins last week. The Nittany Lions have gotten a late season boost from Donovon Jack, who averaged 15.5 ppg and 5.5 rpg off the bench in Penn State’s last two games. PSU featured a 10-player rotation, as all 10 average at least 10 minutes per game. Garner leads PSU with 57 3-pointers while Taylor has 39 on the season.

The Hoosiers are in the midst of playing three ranked teams in a four-game stretch following last week’s split with Iowa and Michigan State. Indiana features one of the nation’s top offenses, as the Hoosiers lead the Big Ten in scoring offense (83.5 ppg) and field goal percentage (.503), while ranking second in 3-pointers per game (10.0) and 3-point percentage (.417). The Hoosiers are 3-3 since a 12-game winning streak that began following a loss at Duke in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, but have been tough at home, going 14-0 this season. Senior point guard Yogi Ferrell is one of the Big Ten’s top performers, as he averages 16.8 points and 5.8 assists per game to rank in the top six in both categories. He is one of three Indiana players averaging double figures following the season-ending injury to James Blackmon Jr. in December. Troy Williams averages 15.8 points and a team-high 6.3 rebounds per game, while freshman Thomas Bryant averages 11.9 points on 70 percent shooting and 5.7 caroms per game.

Junior Nigel Hayes has been one of the Big Ten’s best frontcourt players, averaging a team-high 17.1 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. Redshirt freshman Ethan Happ (12.3 ppg; 8.1 rpg) and junior Bronson Koenig (13.4 ppg; 2.2 apg) supplement Hayes’ offensive production.

The Scarlet Knights led by 12 in the first half and led for most of the game before Illinois rallied late in regulation. Corey Sanders led Rutgers with 39 points - matching the highest single-game effort in the Big Ten this year - along with 12 assists. Jonathan Laurent, who missed the first matchup with an injury, added 23 points and eight rebounds in the loss. Third-year head coach Eddie Jordan was one of the greatest players in program history, helping Rutgers to a Final Four in 1976. He finished his career as the school’s all-time leader in both assists (585) and steals (220) and was an honorable-mention All-American in 1977. Jordan, who was a former assistant at Rutgers and Boston College, did most of his coaching in the NBA, and coached nine years in the league with stints in Sacramento (1996-98), Washington (2003-09) and Philadelphia (2009-10). The Scarlet Knights have shown the ability to be competitive, including a one-point loss to Wake Forest, a six-point loss to Monmouth and a seven-point loss to Indiana. Injuries have hampered the Scarlet Knights, as three players are out for the year with injuries, including Deshawn Freeman, who was second on the team in scoring at the time of his injury. Sanders leads RU in both scoring (15.4 ppg) and assists (4.1 apg) while Mike Williams joins him in double figures at 12.3 ppg.

The Terrapins are 8-2 in the Big Ten and one game out of first place following wins over No. 3 Iowa and Ohio State last week. Maryland returned three starters from a team that won 27 games and reached the third round of the 2015 NCAA Tournament. Maryland has three losses, coming at the hands of top-10 teams North Carolina and Michigan State as well as a 3-point loss at Michigan. Maryland Head Coach Mark Turgeon is a familiar face for long-time Husker fans, as he played at Kansas from 1984 to 1987 for Larry Brown and also served as an assistant at KU from 1987 to 1992. He served as a head coach at Jacksonville State, Wichita State and Texas A&M before taking the Maryland job prior to the 2011-12 season. Maryland is one of the most efficient teams in the country, averaging 76.8 points per game while shooting 50 percent from the field. All five starters average in double figures, including a team-high 14.5 ppg and 5.4 apg from Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year Melo Trimble. A pair of ACC transfers and one of the Big Ten’s top freshmen have given Maryland one of the top starting lineups in the country. Robert Carter (13.2 pgg, 6.9 rpg) and Rasheed Sulaimon (10.5 ppg on 47.7 percent shooting from 3-point range) have given the Terrapins a pair of veteran scorers, while freshman center Diamond Stone is averaging 12.8 ppg on 57 percent shooting from the field.

The Wolverines went 2-2 in their first four games, but have played much better of late, going 8-2 in their last 10 contests with the only losses coming to nationally ranked Purdue and Iowa. UM has been without Caris LeVert (17.6 ppg; 5.4 rpg; 5.2 apg) since the start of January, although he is potentially close to returning to action. In his absence, the Wolverines have been a balanced club with five players averaging at least 9.5 points per game, including four in double figures. Michigan is an efficient offensive team that is shooting 45 percent from the field in Big Ten play, including over 40 percent from 3-point range. Junior Zak Irvin leads UM with 13.8 ppg in Big Ten play while shooting 46 percent from 3-point range. Derrick Walton Jr. adds 12.8 ppg and 6.7 rpg, while Mark Donnal is averaging 11.7 ppg and 7.0 rpg in conference action.
