The Wildcats have been off since a 61-56 loss to Indiana in Evanston on Feb. 22. The Wildcats are led by Chris Collins, who spent the last 13 seasons at Duke under Hall of Fame Coach Mike Krzyzewski before taking the Northwestern job last spring. Northwestern, which returned four starters and eight letterwinners from 2012-13, got off to a slow start, going 7-9 including three straight losses in Big Ten play before playing some of their best basketball of the season. The Wildcats went 5-2 over a seven-game stretch, including road wins at Indiana, Wisconsin and Minnesota, heading into the first matchup with the Huskers. That day, Nebraska overcame a six-point halftime deficit to win 53-49, and Northwestern has dropped its next four, including six-point setbacks to both Minnesota and Indiana. The Wildcats’ strength is on the defensive end, as they are allowing just 63.7 points per game to rank fourth in the league in scoring defense. Northwestern is holding foes to 41 percent shooting, including just 32 percent from 3-point range to rank fourth in the Big Ten. On the other hand, Northwestern’s offense has struggled at times, shooting just 40 percent from the field and are being out-rebounded by over four boards per game. The Wildcats average a conference-low 60.5 points per game. Fifth-year senior Drew Crawford has been the catalyst for the Wildcats, as he leads the team in scoring (15.6) and rebounding (6.6). He had 30 points in a win at Wisconsin earlier this season and ranks among the top 10 in the Big Ten in both scoring and rebounding. JerShon Cobb has been solid for the Wildcats at the point, averaging 12.2 points per game and dishing out 57 assists, but missed the Indiana game with a foot injury and is out for Saturday’s game. Sophomore Tre Demps gives Northwestern another outside scorer as he averages 11.1 points per game off the bench while shooting 36 percent from 3-point range. Sophomore Alex Olah mans the interior with 8.4 points and 5.3 rebounds per game while blocking nearly two shots a contest. If Cobb is unable to go, junior Dave Sobolewski will be relied on, as he started at the point for the previous two years before suffering a concussion in January.

February 26, 2014 8pm CT - BTN State Farm Center (16,618) - Champaign, IL Nebraska Cornhuskers 16-10, 8-6 (Last: W 76-57 vs Purdue) vs Illinois Fighting Illini 15-12, 4-10 (Last: W 62-49 vs Minnesota) Big Ten Standings #16 Michigan 11-3, 19-7 #18 Michigan State 11-4, 22-6 #14 Wisconsin 10-5, 23-5 #22 Ohio State 9-6, 22-6 #20 Iowa 8-6, 19-8 Nebraska 8-6, 16-10 Minnesota 7-9, 18-11 Indiana 5-9, 15-12 Purdue 5-9, 15-12 Northwestern 5-10, 12-16 Illinois 4-10, 15-12 Penn State 4-10, 13-14 Head Coaches Nebraska Tim Miles (314-248, 31-28 at Nebraska) Illinois John Groce (123-81, 38-25 at Illinois) Injury Report Nebraska F - Walter Pitchford - Knee - Probable Illinois G - Mike LaTulip - Concussion - Questionable Scouting Illinois The Fighting Illini head into Wednesday’s game with a 15-12 record and are 4-10 in the Big Ten following a 62-49 win at Minnesota on Feb. 19. The Fighting Illini, which had lost its last eight games, four games ago, putt freshmen Kendrick Nunn and Malcolm Hill into the lineup and have played much better. Illinois is 2-2 since the switch, holding its last two foes under 50 points. John Groce is in his second year at Illinois after he guided the Illini to a 23-13 record and the third round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament. Before taking the Illinois job, he led Ohio University to a 29-8 record and a berth in the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2012. Groce also served as an assistant at Ohio State, Xavier and North Carolina State before taking over the Bobcat program. Illinois, which returned a pair of starters from the 2013 squad, won 13 of its first 15 contests, including wins against UNLV, Missouri and Indiana, before struggling at times in Big Ten action. The Illini are led by junior guard Rayvonte Rice, who ranks among the Big Ten leaders in scoring at 16.2 points per game while grabbing 5.9 rebounds per game. He is one of two Illini in double figures as junior point guard Tracy Abrams averages 11.3 points and 3.1 assists per game. Junior center Nnanna Egwu is one of the top defensive centers in the Big Ten as he ranks second with 2.3 blocked shots per contests.

The Boilermakers need a strong finish to avoid missing the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year after Purdue had made seven straight NCAA appearances. With four returning starters, the Boilermakers opened the year with five straight wins, but are just 10-10 over the last 20 games. Purdue is 12-3 at Mackey Arena, but 3-8 away from home this season. Purdue relies on a 10-player rotation for ninth-year coach Matt Painter, while 11 different players have made at least one start. Against MSU, Purdue shot 49 percent from the floor, but the Spartans hit 17 3-pointers and forced 10 Boilermaker turnovers. Kendall Stephens led Purdue off the bench with 19 points, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range. Senior guard Terone Johnson leads the Boilermakers with 11.9 points per game, as Purdue averages 73.3 points per game. Ronnie Johnson is also in double figures at 11.0 points per game, while A.J. Hammons averages 10.5 points, 7.3 rebounds and a Big Ten-leading 3.0 blocked shots per game.
  4. I like to think of myself as a true Nebrasketball fan. And so i got to thinking, what has changed to make Nebrasketball in to one of the biggest stories in this state. I apologize, but below is a bit of word vomit-- not as organized as i would like and a bit long to read... But here is why i think Nebraska is having a special year. The easy answer is Tim Miles. And while he is a big part, i think that Tom Osborne and the Administration did a few things to create Nebrasketball into a house hold name.... The biggest question we all asked was "what would come first, the fan support or winning?" I am a bit shocked to say, but the fan support came first and has made a big difference, but that is a big part because of the new arena. The shift to changing Nebrasketball has been threefold. So the three obvious things that have started to shift things is this: 1. Tim Miles 2. The Pinnacle Bank Arena/Practice facility(facilities in general) 3. The fan support These three have allowed for Nebraska to start to get the recognition I always knew it could get to. Commentators are calling our home arena a tough place to play... ABOUT DANG TIME WE TURNED OUR FOOTBALL FAN SUPPORT IN TO BASKETBALL SUPPORT! Tim Miles came in and knew what he had to do. He had an opportunity. The Arena, a new practice facility and a new conference. So Tim ran with it. He talked the talk.. He got people excited. He started getting big recruits to just show up... Reason #1 allows for reason #3 to become a factor. At the end of the day, we didnt need winning in order to get the fan support because #1 and #2 above. The Fan support is here, and therefore I think makes it even easier for winning to come. Obviously you need the talent, but again, #1 and #2 above allowed for us to get the talent in the door, and #3 will allow for us to get even more of that talent.. The talent is here, but I figured it would take two years to turn this talent in to a well coached machine... and then Petteway started to show that he could carry us through the bumps of being a newer/younger team. Petteway leads my list of secondary reasons why we are here. A. Players who were under appreciated elsewhere- Petteway/Pitchford B. Bo Pelini C. Creighton's success These three reasons above relate more to the first 3 i mentioned, but i think they have a lot to do with why Option 3 has been so good. A- Petteway is the first guy to get NBA-talk since ... Well since Lue(i believe). He isnt just a scorer, but he is a leader. He isnt scared to take the big shot. He isnt scared to drive. But he also isnt scared to let others score(IE Shields/Pitchford). He wants this team to win and he is only a Sophomore. Petteway and Pitchford didnt get the love elsewhere. Petteway proved to people like Pat Knight and Miles that he could be a great player and the coaching staff at TT just didnt see it. He came somewhere where a coach would just let him go and do what he needs to. We arent the island of misfit toys, but we are the island of second chances. B- This isnt meant to insult Pelini in a thread all about positivity. That being said, the negativity of the football team and Bo Pelini(by some/not all) has made us all want to find some positivity with the 'skers. So, now that a little success has been shown and we have a coach who is bubbly, likes to goof off, is good with the media and represents the team in such a good light. When people talk about Nebraska it is only positive things. Coach Izzo and Pitino(MN) are raving about Miles... the BTN network loves his tweets at halftime and the fan base seems even more in love with him because he is the polar opposite of all the things we dont like about Bo(some people). C. Creighton has been the toast of Nebraska... Getting national love-- and all of this has made me sick.. So when Nebraska has a little success, it feels good. All of a sudden this rivalry is picking up even more. People are being forced to pick a side now. Both teams are having success. And i think that some peoples hate for Creighton is only increasing with their success, and therefore making their love for nebraska grow. Nebraska doesnt want to be seen as option #2 in this state and i think the Nebraska fans see this as a direct competition--therefore are stepping the fandom up. This all said, it has been awesome to watch. All of a sudden Huskerboard is going ape.. New threads each day--people following recruiting.. a game thread that had 7 pages... This is what I am talking about. People are truly excited and I just freaking love it.... I have been waiting so long for things to finally get to this point... This all being said, we have momentum and we cant let it stop. Need to get good players in. Need to keep the good ones we have and cant slip. So that is my take... Nebrasketball is back thanks to 3 main reasons...

The Spartans have made six Final Fours in the last 15 seasons and made 16 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. MSU returned four starters from a team that won 27 games and reached the Sweet 16 last year. The Spartans were the overwhelming preseason choice to win the Big Ten, but have battled injuries during the course of the season. Despite having to use 14 lineups during the season, MSU has continued to roll along. The Spartans won 11 straight until falling to Michigan on Jan. 25, while their only other Big Ten loss came on a buzzer beater at Wisconsin on Feb. 9. Both of those losses came when MSU was missing two starters. Currently, senior point Keith Appling and Branden Dawson are both out but could return in the next two weeks. Sunday’s matchup is the only one of the season between the two teams, as the Spartans are one of Nebraska’s four single-play foes in 2013-14. The Spartans are second in the Big Ten in scoring offense, totaling 78 points per game. MSU is among the league leaders in both field goal percentage (.471, third) and 3-point percentage (.387, 2nd). Michigan State is also strong on the defensive end, ranking second in the Big Ten in field goal defense (.389) as well as steals (7.6 per game). Sophomore Gary Harris is one of the favorites for Big Ten player of the year, as he averages 17.4 points per game, 4.4 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game. MSU also features one of the nation’s top big men in Adreian Payne, who averages 16.6 points and 7.6 rebounds per game and is averaging close to 20 points per game since his return to the lineup three games ago.

Under fifth-year head coach Tom Crean, the Hoosiers are a different team than the 2012-13 squad which featured two NBA Lottery picks and won the Big Ten regular-season title. The Hoosiers returned just one starter from a 29-7 squad that reached the NCAA Sweet 16. Indiana has been up and down in conference play, including a win over then-unbeaten and No. 3 Wisconsin before falling at Northwestern at home four days later. While Indiana averages 76.3 points per game, the Hoosiers’ strength is a defense which holds teams to under 40 percent shooting, while IU out-rebounds teams by a conference best 11.1 boards per game. Sophomore point guard Yogi Ferrell is one of the Big Ten’s top performers, as he averages a team-high 17.5 points along with 4.0 assists per game to rank in the top 10 in the Big Ten in both categories. Ferrell also shoots better than 40 percent from 3-point range for the Hoosiers. In that game, Daniel Bowie’s 23 points and 12 rebounds led four Huskies in double figures, while NIU out-rebounded St. Joseph’s 67-22. Head Coach Mike Montgomery is in his third season at Northern Illinois after spending the previous 10 seasons on Tom Izzo’s staff at Michigan State, including the last four as associate head coach. He returns four starters from a team that won only five games last year. The roster also features six newcomers who have all played significant roles early on. The NIU roster is mostly homegrown, as 10 of the 17 players are from the state of Illinois. NIU features a balanced roster with five players averaging between 7.8 and 12.2 points per game. Sophomore Darrell Bowie leads NIU in both scoring (12.5 ppg) and rebounding (7.0 rpg). The Huskies rely on their bench, as Daveon Balls (8.2 ppg) and Jordan Threloff (8.0) are two of NIU’s top four scorers.
