  1. Time for the next game in the BHTtNWaNT tournament! As it turns out, strep throat knocks you on your a$$ and makes you really not want to do anything, so this game is going to be a bit truncated. For the next 5 days, let's determine which team is best between the 1993 Huskers, and the 1982 Cornhuskers. Our last game between the '83 Huskers and '96 Huskers was much more of a blowout than I anticipated, as '83 won 21-1. Now, onto the Tale of the Tape! #2: 1993 Nebraska: Record: 11-1 Rank: 3rd (AP), 3rd (Coaches) Conference Record: 7-0 Coach: Tom Osborne (11-1) Points For: 437 Points/G: 36.4 (7th of 106) Points Against: 194 Opp Pts/G: 16.2 (13th of 106) SRS: 20.31 (3rd of 106) SOS: 5.48 (23rd of 106) Bowl Game: Lost Orange Bowl 18-16 versus Florida State Notable Players: Tommie Frazier, Trev Alberts, Calvin Jones Notable Games: vs. #20 Colorado (W, 21-17), vs. #16 Oklahoma (W, 21-7), vs. '65 Nebraska (W, 31-0) #3: 1982 Nebraska: Record: 12-1 Rank: 3rd (AP), 3rd (Coaches) Conference Record: 7-0 Coach: Tom Osborne (12-1) Points For: 514 Points/G: 39.5 (1st of 113) Points Against: 167 Opp Pts/G: 12.8 (8th of 113) SRS: 21.94 (2nd of 113) SOS: 4.48 (38th of 113) Bowl Game: Won Orange Bowl 21-20 versus LSU Notable Players: Mike Rozier, Roger Craig, Turner Gill Notable Games: vs. #8 PSU (L, 27-24), vs. #11 OU (W, 28-24), vs. #13 LSU (W, 21-20), vs. '84 Nebraska (W, 31-4) '82 Nebraska has the advantage statistically, but '93 Nebraska played the harder schedule. SRS has them separated by one spot, but they both finished 3rd in the polls. This is an intriguing matchup for the right to play '83 Nebraska in the title game.
  2. Alright, it's time to get serious. The first matchup in the semifinals of the BHTtNWaNT Tournament pits the 1983 Cornhuskers vs. the 1996 Huskers. In their first round matchups, '83 demolished 2009 Nebraska 30-1, and 1996 Nebraska squeaked by 1999 Nebraska, 25-24. Time for the Tale of the Tape! Go here to see the bracket: https://challonge.com/v1yter3q #1: 1983 Nebraska: Record: 12-1 Rank: 2nd (AP), 2nd (Coaches) Conference Record: 7-0 Coach: Tom Osborne (12-1) Points For: 654 Points/G: 50.3 (1st of 112) Points Against: 217 Opp Pts/G: 16.7 (26th of 112) SRS: 22.61 (2nd of 112) SOS: 3.84 (37th of 112) Bowl Game: Lost Orange Bowl 31-30 versus Miami, FL Notable Players: Mike Rozier, Turner Gill, Irving Fryar Notable Games: vs. #4 PSU (W, 44-6), vs. #5 Miami, FL (L, 31-30), 2009 Nebraska (W, 30-1) #5: 1996 Nebraska: Record: 11-2 Rank: 6th (AP), 6th (Coaches) Conference Record: 8-0 Coach: Tom Osborne (11-2) Points For: 553 Points/G: 42.5 (3rd of 111) Points Against: 174 Opp Pts/G: 13.4 (4th of 111) SRS: 22.22 (3rd of 111) SOS: 6.53 (5th of 111) Bowl Game: Won Orange Bowl 41-21 versus Virginia Tech Notable Players: Grant Wistrom, Jason Peter, Ahman Green Notable Games: vs. Arizona State (L, 19-0), vs. #5 Colorado (W, 17-12), vs. Texas (L, 37-27), 1999 Nebraska (W, 25-24) On paper, this is an incredible offense vs. a very stout defense; '83 Nebraska had the best offense in the country (and some would say in school history), but the '96 defense was no joke, only giving up 13 points per game against the 5th best schedule in the country; the SRS has them virtually neck and neck, with '96 only .4 tenths of a point behind '83. 3. It's time for the final game of the First Round/Quarterfinals! In a recap of the last two games, 1982 Nebraska crushed 1984 Nebraska, 31-4, and in the closest result so far, 1996 Nebraska edged 1999 Nebraska 25-24. This weeks game pits the 1993 Nebraska Cornhuskers vs. the 1965 Nebraska Cornhuskers. Updated bracket is here: https://challonge.com/v1yter3q #2: 1993 Nebraska: Record: 11-1 Rank: 3rd (AP), 3rd (Coaches) Conference Record: 7-0 Coach: Tom Osborne (11-1) Points For: 437 Points/G: 36.4 (7th of 106) Points Against: 194 Opp Pts/G: 16.2 (13th of 106) SRS: 20.31 (3rd of 106) SOS: 5.48 (23rd of 106) Bowl Game: Lost Orange Bowl 18-16 versus Florida State Notable Players: Tommie Frazier, Trev Alberts, Calvin Jones Notable Games: vs. #20 Colorado (W, 21-17), vs. #16 Oklahoma (W, 21-7) #7: 1965 Nebraska Record: 10-1 Rank: 5th (AP), 3rd (Coaches) Conference Record: 7-0 Coach: Bob Devaney (10-1) Points For: 349 Points/G: 31.7 (1st of 120) Points Against: 129 Opp Pts/G: 11.7 (23rd of 120) SRS: 17.55 (8th of 120) SOS: 2.55 (57th of 120) Bowl Game: Lost Orange Bowl 39-28 versus Alabama Notable Players: Fred Duda, Frank Solich, Wayne Meylan Notable Games: vs. #6* Missouri (W, 19-17), vs. Colorado (W, 38-13) The dichotomy between these two teams is fascinating: their statistical measures are relatively even, save for '65's relatively low SOS. They both suffered their only losses in the Orange Bowl, and they both finished in the top 3 in the polls (AP in '65 notwithstanding). Also, take a peak at the PPG that the '65 team averaged: 31.7 PPG was the #1 ranked offense in '65. (A note on statistics: all stats are taken from sports-reference.com. 4. Your nominations have been tallied, and we have a tournament! First up in the BHTtNWaNT tournament: 1983 Nebraska vs. 2009 Nebraska. Here's the bracket: https://challonge.com/v1yter3q. Now, to the tale of the tape! #1: 1983 Nebraska: Record: 12-1 Rank: 2nd (AP), 2nd (Coaches) Conference Record: 7-0 Coach: Tom Osborne (12-1) Points For: 654 Points/G: 50.3 (1st of 112) Points Against: 217 Opp Pts/G: 16.7 (26th of 112) SRS: 22.61 (2nd of 112) SOS: 3.84 (37th of 112) Bowl Game: Lost Orange Bowl 31-30 versus Miami, FL Notable Players: Mike Rozier, Turner Gill, Irving Fryar Notable Games: vs. #4 PSU (W, 44-6), vs. #5 Miami, FL (L, 31-30) #8: 2009 Nebraska: Record: 10-4 Rank: 14th (AP), 14th (Coaches) Conference Record: 6-2 Coach: Bo Pelini (10-4) Points For: 352 Points/G: 25.1 (75th of 120) Points Against: 146 Opp Pts/G: 10.4 (1st of 120) SRS: 11.41 (19th of 120) SOS: 2.69 (36th of 120) Bowl Game: Won Holiday Bowl 33-0 versus Arizona Notable Players: Ndamukong Suh, Jared Crick, Roy Helu Notable Games: vs. #13 Virginia Tech (L, 16-15), vs. #3 Texas (L, 10-9) A matchup of perhaps the best offense in school history vs. perhaps the best defense. One team littered with stars on offense vs. one with a singular juggernaut on D, surrounded by professional talent. '83 benefits from having a much more well-rounded team; one of the greatest "What Ifs" in program history will be "what if 2009 had a capable QB?". The sky might have been the limit with that type of defense. This one might seem like an easy choice, but that O vs. that D would have been a sight to see. 5. Before we do a deep dive into Bo Pelini's Worst Losses, some housecleaning: - Mike Riley's Best Win: witih 75% of the vote, 2015 Michigan State won, handily. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQkxAOcshOQ&t=2s - Mike Riley's Worst Loss: Northern Illinois, with 47% of the vote: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h13lUNsFGf4 Now that we've looked at Riley's best wins and worst losses, and Pelini's best wins, let's take a look at some of the worst losses during the Bo Pelini era at Nebraska. Game 1 - 2009 Iowa State: 8 turnovers. 7 points. I AM SO PROUD OF YOU. #Ugh - ESPN: http://www.espn.com/college-football/game?gameId=292970158 - Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnAdPXjXksw Game 2 - 2010 Texas: Cornhusker Hotel incident or not, the buildup to this game lead to one of the biggest disappointments in program history. - ESPN: http://www.espn.com/college-football/game?gameId=302890158 - Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ciqf7MYTByY (mute this; awful music) Game 3 - 2012 Wisconsin 2: Bo's best chance at a conference championship blew up in the team's face. Melvin Gordon Nightmare part 1. - ESPN: http://www.espn.com/college-football/game?gameId=323360275 - Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhD8DiDJhP0 Game 4 - UCLA 2013: Up 21-10 at halftime, and the Bruins roar back for 28 unanswered in the 3rd quarter. Still my favorite alternate uniforms, though. - ESPN: http://www.espn.com/college-football/game?gameId=332570158 - Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VxZ8UapqMY Game 5 - Wisconsin 2014: Melvin Gordon Nightmare part 2. 16.32 yards per carry. Nebraska was up 17-3 at one point. - ESPN: http://www.espn.com/college-football/game?gameId=400547974 - Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZM-nmPHYyo Voting will be open for a week, and if there is a game which you think fits the bill better, please vote "Other" and describe it in a post. Thanks!
  6. Oh yes, we're stretching back further into history, and looking at the best wins of the Bill Callahan era of Nebraska football. First, though, a look back at the Worst Losses of the Pelini Era. With over 65% of the vote, Huskerboard has decided that the worst loss of the Bo Pelini era was the 2012 Big Ten Championship game against Wisconsin. Rightfully so, too. Now, onto Bill Callahan: Game 1 - 2005 Colorado: "Restore the Order". Zac Taylor throws for almost 400, Cory Ross runs for almost 150, and the CU security staff throws out hundreds of students. - ESPN: http://www.espn.co.uk/college-football/recap?gameId=253290038 - Youtube: https://youtu.be/iNM9AiZm-TU?t=5s Game 2 - 2005 Michigan: Little did we know, but this would turn into a conference game a few years later. Pretty wonky ending, but Nebraska showed fortitude in finishing. - ESPN: http://www.espn.com/college-football/recap?gameId=253620158 - Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZzrJyh3Sd8 Game 3 - 2006 Texas A&M: Taylor was as cool as ice leading a game winning drive, including one hell of a 4th down completion to Todd Peterson. Clinched the division, too. - ESPN: http://www.espn.com/college-football/recap?gameId=263150245 - Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGWKnyFzpkc Game 4 - 2006 Colorado: Nebraska finishes the Big 12 North title in style using four trick plays, including a TD pass to Barry Turner - ESPN: http://www.espn.com/ncf/recap/_/id/263280158 - Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ICijQRsUbw Game 5 - 2007 Kansas St: Callahan knew his fate was sealed at this point, and went into full DGAF mode. Ganz threw for 510 yards and 7 TDs, both school records. - ESPN: http://www.espn.com/ncf/recap/_/id/273140158 - Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOIJXJONm3k Voting will be open for a week, and if there is a game which you think fits the bill better, please vote "Other" and describe it in a post. 7. Last week, we looked at the best wins and worst losses during the Mike Riley era of Nebraska football. It sparked some good discussion, and we have 3 and a half more months of the offseason, so this week, let's take a look back and discuss the best wins of the Bo Pelini era. This list wasn't as difficult as the Riley list was, since there were actually more than two quality wins to pick from. Game 1- 2009 Oklahoma: one of the most dominant defensive performances in program history. A nice response to the thrashing we took in 2008 - ESPN Summary: http://www.espn.com/college-football/game?gameId=293110158 - Youtube highlights: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iITLr4V0X10 Game 2 - 2010 Kansas State: the national reveal of Taylor Martinez. Absolutely crushed KSU in prime time on a Thursday night. - ESPN: http://www.espn.com/college-football/game?gameId=302802306 - Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVI64Yih2Ug&t= Game 3 - 2011 Ohio State: helped by an injury to Braxton Miller, the offense answered the bell in the 2nd half, and it includes one of my absolute favorite Rex Burkhead moments. - ESPN: http://www.espn.com/college-football/game?gameId=312810158 - Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DD3Zzbm8xKA&t= Game 4 - 2012 Wisconsin 1: Another comeback on national TV. Ignore the uniforms and marvel at the backfield combo of Martinez, Burkhead and a young Ameer Abdullah. - ESPN: http://www.espn.com/college-football/game?gameId=322730158 - Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXqAbjsJRzI Game 5 - Miami 2014: "Bloodthirsty" is the best way I can describe this game. We FINALLY got Miami in Memorial Stadium, and the old girl (and the team) rose to the occasion. - ESPN: http://www.espn.com/college-football/game?gameId=400547789 - Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qdiH53SzOY Voting will be open for a week, and if there is a game which you think fits the bill better, please vote "Other" and describe it in a post. Thanks!
  8. Last week, we looked at the best wins (a misnomer if I ever saw one) of the Mike Riley era. Now, let's take a look at the games that could be considered the "worst losses". I've gone through each season's schedule and pulled 5 games that could be considered the worst losses (and no, you can't vote for "All of the Above"). We can debate for a week, put it to a vote and decide. If there is a game that isn't listed, vote for "other", and explain your choice. Game 1: 2015 BYU: http://www.espn.com/college-football/game?gameId=400763495 - In all honesty, we probably should have known what we were in for after the very first game of the Riley era. Some awful coaching decisions coupled with lackluster effort by a lot of players wishing their old coach was still on the sidelines. Armstrong throws for 300, but we all know how this one ended. Game 2: 2015 Illinois: http://www.espn.com/college-football/game?gameId=400763528 - Absolutely atrocious late-game decisions by OC Danny Langsdorf and Tommy Armstrong. Armstrong was particularly bad; 10-31 for 105 yards, but if he runs the ball on the infamous play, Nebraska still probably wins. Game 3: 2015 Purdue: http://www.espn.com/college-football/game?gameId=400763555 - This would be the only conference game that Purdue would win in 2015. This was also Ryker Fyfe's bowl game: he threw for 400 yards and 4 TDs, but 4 INTs and the defense couldn't keep themselves off the field and Purdue out of the end zone. Game 4: 2017 Northern Illinois: http://www.espn.com/college-football/game?gameId=400935354 - I think this was the game when we realized that Tanner Lee's interception issues weren't just because of the competition. At this point, you could almost call out when he was going to throw an INT, as the final score was Nebraska 14, NIU's defense 14, NIU's offense 7. Game 5: 2017 Iowa: http://www.espn.com/college-football/game?gameId=400935417 - The story of one quarter: with the game tied at halftime, Iowa went off for 28 in the 3rd quarter, and it was over. Thankfully, the whole thing was over.
  9. Gonna try something new for the offseason: let's find out which win of the Mike Riley era (error?) is considered the best by the board. I've gone through each season's schedule and pulled 5 games that could be considered the best wins of Riley's tenure. We can debate for a week, put it to a vote and decide. If there is a game that isn't listed, vote for "other", and explain your choice. Note 1: I'm planning on doing a "Worst Loss" thread as well Note 2: The Riley era was so bad, I originally had two losses in the "Best Win" column. Game 1: 2015 Michigan State http://www.espn.com/college-football/game?gameId=400763560 - This game was marked by a wonderful drive by Tommy Armstrong at the end of the game, driving the offense down and scoring with less than a minute left on a controversial TD pass to Brandon Reilly. Game 2: 2015 UCLA http://www.espn.com/college-football/game?gameId=400852720 - This game was RtDB guy's wet dream. Armstrong, Ozigbo and Cross pounded the UCLA defense, with 46 carries between the three. Also marked by a controversial ejection of Nate Gerry on a pitch-perfect tackle in the second quarter. Game 3: 2016 Wyoming http://www.espn.com/college-football/game?gameId=400869187 - Most points scored in the Riley era. Armstrong throws for almost 400 yards, and the defense picks future first rounder Josh Allen off 5 times. Game 4: 2016 Oregon http://www.espn.com/college-football/game?gameId=400869113 - Riley finally gets a win over Oregon. Marked by another gusty performance by Armstrong, scoring the go-ahead TD from 34 yards out with roughly 2 minutes left. Game 5: 2017 Purdue http://www.espn.com/college-football/game?gameId=400935395 - The final win of 2017 was punctuated by a comeback led by Tanner Lee with under one minute left.

  13. The Bama Dynasty thread got me looking into this. I considered the modern era to begin in 1944, when most of the big dogs started up football again near the end of the war. These are sorted by winning percentage, not necessarily greatest to least great. I only considered overlapping spans if at least five (half) of the seasons did not overlap (thus, Nebraska 87-96 and 92-01 both made the list). I am counting conference co-championships whenever the conference did not hold a championship game. I will not be counting national championships crowned prior to a bowl loss, because that is silly to me. I'm still working on filling in many of the blanks but I figured I'd share at least what I have so far. I'd also like to add computer rankings, and James Howell's are the only ones I know of that publish results prior to the '90s. If you know of others, let me know. Thanks to Chris Stassen (http://football.stassen.com/), James Howell (http://www.jhowell.net/cf/cfindex.htm) and Mike Gardner (http://www.mghelmets.com/)
  14. Yet another offseason article, this time from Rivals (free), where Olin Buchanan gives us his top ten best pregame traditions. The Tunnel Walk makes the list at #10, which is nice, but the rest of the list is bizarre. I can see Yell Practice at A&M being included because it's huge and it's pretty cool. The fact that it's the #1 item on Buchanan's list is probably best explained by the fact that Buchanan is a bigwig at TexAgs.com, an Aggie message board. What made me almost vomit was #3 - Colorado's running of the buffalo. OK, they have a live buffalo mascot. And they like to run him on the field. How does that make this list, let alone the top three? Give me the Sooner Schooner any day. And for "cool" I'd put Chief Osceola's spear-planting ahead of Ralphie. Here's the list. Do with it what you will. LINK
  15. With the recent talks of the East / West split, it got me thinking about our division mates up in Madison. There are a ton of questions that need to be asked about the current and future relationship between the rivalry with the Badgers. Where do we stand with Wisconsin? We have the past success, but the current state of their football program is superior to ours. They've been the conference champs for three years in a row now. We got blown out in our only game in Madison so far. We mounted a common 2012 Husker comeback and edged them under the lights of Memorial Stadium. We all know what happend next... They obviously have the upper hand right now. 2-1 with both Ws being blowouts, but that coach has moved on... Former Utah State head coach Gary Andersen is taking charge and trying to continue Wisconsin's success nationally and in the ever changing Big Ten Conference. Thoughts on the rivalry with the Badgers in the upcoming years?
