Why does a supposedly top shelf coach making millions of dollars a year need to bring in a consultant after more than a year and a half to figure out what's wrong with his team?

Heck, for that matter, why do coaches even need assistant coaches? If they're really that good at coaching, why don't they just do it all themselves? :dunno

Um, please See below that shows what Dana Holgorsen has done with running backs when he was OC/HC for- West Virginia, Texas Tech, Houston, OSU.

I think this type of production by the Running Backs might surprise you and possibly bring a tear to your eye.  ;)  These are individual seasons.

Charles Sims - SR season - 1095 rushing yards on 208 carries, 11 TDs, 401 receiving yards, 3 TDs, total production - 1496 yards, 14 touchdowns - in 12 games.  That is the starter and I'm not including his backup stats.

Wendall Smallwood - SR season - 1519 rushing yards on 238 carries, 6.4 avg, 9 TDs, 264 receiving yards - total production 1679 yards 9 TDs in 13 games

Taurean Henderson - 872 rushing yards, 5.9 avg, 17 TDs, 528 receiving yards, 5 TDs, total productioin - 1400 yards, 22 TDs - in 12 games

Shannon Woods - 926 rushing yards, 6.1 avg, 10 TDs, 572 receiving yards, 2 TDs - total production - 1498 yards, 12 TDs - in 13 games

Injury bug season - 3 RBs - 842 rushing yards, 14 TDs rushing, 4 receiving TDs, 562 rec yards,   - total production 1404yards, 18 TDs

Bryce Beal - 1247 rushing yards, 6.3 avg, 198 carries, 13 TDs, 496 receiving yards, 4 TDs - total production - 1743 yards, 17 TDs

2 Back Committe - Bryce Beal - 670 yards, 7 TDs; 311 recieving yards 3 TDs; Charles Sims 698 yards, 9TDs, 759 receiving yards, 1 TD - total production from a 2 back system -1378 rushing yards, 16 TDs, 1070 receiving yards, 4 TD receiving - total - 2440 yards, 20 TDs

Kendall Hunter - 1548 rushing yards, 16 TDs; Total yards 1649 - backups

Joseph Randle & Jeremy SMith - 714 rushing yards, 9 TDs, 428 recieving yards, 1 TD - total RB production 2262 rushing yards, 25 TDs - total production Rush/Rec - 2789 Yards from scrimmage, 26 TDs

2 back system - Garrison & Alston 1158 rushing yards, 18 TDs, 204 receiving yards - 1362 yards, 18 TDs in 11 games

3 back system - Buie, Alston, Austin - 1880 rushing yards, 17 TDs, 1607 recieving yards, 12 TDs - total production 3487  29TDs

4 running backs sharing the ball - 2193 rushing yards, 16 TDs - total production - 2774 yards, 16 TDs

3 back system - Crawford 1184 rushing yards, Shell 514 rushing yards, McKoy 472 rushing yards - total - 2170 rushing yards, 19 TDs

2 back system - Crawford 1061 yards, McKoy 596 yards, - total rushing for 2 RBS: 1667 rushing yards, 14 TDs

3 RB system - McKoy, Pettaway, Brown - 1871 rushing yards, 18 rush TDs

2 RB system - McCaskill, Henry - 1474 rushing yards, 23 rush TDs

It is not gonna work for NU in the Big 10.  I think folks need to realize this.  Air Raid + NU + Big 10 = coaching career graveyard.  But hey, if we keep paying, they will keep coming.

  • Mavric changed the title to Dana Holgorsen Hired as Offensive Coordinator

Well that role sure did evolve quickly! Really curious how this goes, the scheme changes have to be relatively small with just a bye week to implement. But I don't think the scheme has really been the issue, so maybe tweaks and a new playcaller is enough.

Scheme doesn't really need to change, just the playcalling.  The hardest part of being an OC is calling plays.  All these guys know how to scheme and where to attack the defense.

The hard part is calling the play.  Dana has balls, you need to have balls to call O

So why is Satterfield still here?

Because Rhule is a nice guy.  That is really it.

Right, more curious about how comfortable Holgorsen is making those playcalls when they're things he hasn't traditionally had in his offense. I'm sure he can do it though, just very interested to see what it looks like. And how angry some fans are the first time we get tackled for loss on a bubble RPO or screen.
