He's a freak because he's 6'6" with long a$$ gorilla arms. His range is crazy and he catches almost everything thrown his way.

Again, what kind of "wiggle" is a TE supposed to have? Considering he's 6'6" and 255 on two reconstructed knees he moves pretty well.

More than he has, and his knees can’t be an excuse when there are other TEs. But the coaches using him the wrong way hasn’t helped.

Have you watched recent Iowa TE's?  They look like large gymnasts compared to Fidone.

I get where his Mom is coming from.  Moms protect their kids, he will always be her baby.

Is it stupid?  Of course it is!  Does it totally make sense?  Of course it does.

Again, just look at all the stupid stuff we post here and none of it is even about our family that we think might be getting "wronged"

Anybody who thinks Fidone shouldn't have a role in this offense is crazy. He's still a freak in the passing game despite the knee injuries. His production is up from last year, but he doesn't have any TDs, partly because the previous OC underutilized him in the RedZone this season.

He's a liability blocking (though when he does engage he can take on anyone), and that's been a problem throughout his short career, but flexing him out creates headaches for any defense.

If you are a liability as a blocker, tight end isn't the position for you.

Yards after contact is another tight end specific quality he seems to be lacking.

I agree with the first part, the second part I don't know if I agree with, because Satt kept throwing him short passes on horizontal routes that were close to the LOS with the piss poor blocking by the WRs. I think if he catches a vertical route with some forward momentum he would be considerably harder to tackle. The dude doesn't have much wiggle, but he hasn't necessarily been put in positions to be successful with the skillset he has either.

You and I have different definitions of “freak”.

He’s a big target, but he’s slow, lumbering, and has zero wiggle.

Absolutely.   He’s a big TE who doesn’t block well, and has trouble getting open, and doing anything of value with the ball once he catches it.

People are probably still in love with his Hs rankings and bypassing the years long lack of meaningful production.

Lots of TE’s have twitch (for the TE position comparatively speaking) and can separate a route from a safety coming down or a LB to get open and break a tackle.   Fiona possesses none of that imo

This is really the punchline for me.

Satterfield just kept going back to that tight end arrow screen. I honestly think that play "worked" a maximum of two times all year (but I could be wrong).

If you want to keep defenses a little more spread out a bit by using pass plays as run replacements, throwing quick outs to your receivers a little wider out just makes more sense to me.

Anyway, Fidone is your guy on play action streaking down the hash, IMO. But if he doesn't block well then you probably need to get that problem fixed immediately or move on to another guy.

Maybe I'm spoiled watching George Kittle on my NFL team, but the idea is for big tight ends to catch the ball in any open space on the other side of the line, and use their size and weight advantage to get some YAC against the smaller DBs. These are often quick button routes or slants rather than vertical routes, so YAC is part of the play call. I was actually surprised how quickly and easily Fidone goes down on initial contact. He's probably got some better moments on his highlight reel, but I don't think we're making this up.

Did the back-up tight ends benefit from different coaching and playcalling? Or did they just do more with the ball, like Emmet Johnson?

Boerkircher broke a tackle and got some significant YAC on a rollout, but they combined for 3 catches and 37 yards. It's not like they were massively productive. They just weren't any worse than Fidone at least according to the eye test.

As I see it - Fidone false started, got pulled, and the other guys didn't make mistakes so they got to keep playing. I don't know that they are any better, but comparable play with no mental errors is an improvement.

Anyway, about that Fidone guy.

Maybe a bit of bench sitting is good for the guy and his NFL dreams and to remain on a team that will have to get down to 105.

I've scratched my head wondering why the guy hasn't produced as expected.  Injuries of course but how much of it was the system & the OC and how much of it was effort on his part.

My bet is he just got a tongue-lashing from his mom.
