At Nebraska, Scott Frost is bringing the walk-on program back to the future

Quote

LINCOLN, Neb. — Scott Frost probably needed a night off.

It was Dec. 14, 2017, his 11th day on the job as Nebraska’s head football coach and a period of time he admits is a complete blur in hindsight. He was coaching UCF and recruiting for the Huskers, flying back and forth between both duties and trying to get too much done each day.

The unbeaten Knights had just begun bowl practices. The December early signing date was one week away. Frost had just made a cross-country trip from Orlando to Lincoln to Fresno, Calif., for an in-home visit with his future quarterback Adrian Martinez the night before. And he had a 5-week-old baby at home.

“I don’t know if I’ve ever been as physically exhausted as I was there for a couple weeks, trying to coach and recruit,” Frost said.

Pausing for one night to relax and regroup would have been nice. But, no, long-term priorities won out. He boarded a jet in Orlando that Wednesday night and landed in Lincoln at 7:33 p.m. He made time for the walk-on program.
