Army Husker
The fact that the officer recognized Josh and approached him is a conflict of interest. I guess I missed the part in the original post where it said the officer recognized Josh and went right in for the kill. It stated a random check. However, just because an officer recognizes anyone, from whatever source, does not provide a conflict of interest when that officer is enforcing a law, regardless of whatever code he is enforcing. I was in various bars 4-5 nights a week, some weeks more. I never once saw a "routine" check or even had my fake ID taken from me 1. That's great! And if you had said fake ID taken, it would be the officer's fault, right? I've heard that over the past 2 years the cops in Lincoln have been pricks when it comes to drinking 2. It goes like this. Nebraska is in the top 10 states nationwide in cost-per-youth for underage drinking. The state requests the police "crack down" on this to lower that statistic, therefore making the local cops appear as "pricks" in the eyes of our underage alcohol consumers. It's total BS what the heck are you supposed to do in Lincoln???????????? 3. I guess it's different for a youth from a much larger outside city to come here and stay occupied? However, the law is the same NO MATTER WHAT STATE you live in. Listen, it was a bum situation for Josh, but I wasn't there. I just thought that it was a little harsh to go ballistic on the officer for doing his job. He gave the kid a summons for goodness sakes. 1. No. It wouldn't have been the officers fault because he would have never asked me for my ID if I didn't do something wrong, other than looking "underage" with a beard........ Because there wasn't this political "crack down"........ That's my rant......... this attitude on college drinking in Lincoln is just plain dumb, it goes no good, it doesn't slow down underage drinking, it actually makes the problem worse... Why??? How??? Because it does not lessen the will of college students to drink... Instead of taking the fake id to the bar, they now have larger more organized parties....... This not only leads to problems in neighborhoods more spread out around town, but it also leads to larger "field" parties out in the middle of nowhere........ 2. Those statistics are always flawed. Politics should not control law enforcement, crime should, that is the reason my dad left the force after 17 years is because he had no judgment left, they stripped him of judgment after 17 years. ..........Instead of giving a kid a ride home and talking to his parents, now he would have to take the kid to jail and have his parents come get him.............. You want to lower underage drinking in Nebraska???????? Give kids something else to do......... I grew up in north platte, not exactly a "city" but in top ten largest towns in Nebraska......... Guess what was the most exciting thing to do on a friday night that didn't involve alcohol........ Cosmic Bowling.......... WOO HOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So you can imagine what there is do to in say Cozad or O'Neill....... What do you expect, underage drinking is always going to be a "problem" in Nebraska......... Wasting Law Enforcement resources is not the way to go about changing that........... 3. It's difficult for anyone to find anything to do in Lincoln that doesn't involve alcohol, doesn't matter where you are from.......... Small town life blows, and as growing up in Nebraska City, I can't argue the good times that we had with our keggers in the back fields. Josh Williams ran into some trouble and I hope that for his sake and the team's, it will be taken care of as soon as possible, in a favorable light to all concerned. Quote Link to comment
IceMan
"In July, Williams was sentenced to two years probation and fined $500 at a plea hearing in his hometown of Denton, Texas, after he was accused of robbing a man last April." If this is true, F#CK that man!!! Let him rot in a prison somewhere! Quote Link to comment
SkullandBones
Yeah, a citation to an eighteen year old legal adult goes on your record, and yes Nebraska (the state) will notify other states' probation office when a citiation - for anything - is issued in its jurisdiction to someone on probation. But, Josh's problems are going to be with a different court, one that is more of a dictatorship. Pelini's. So, was anything - legally - done to the establishment that served him?? No, Williams was only cited and is only considered a violation and not a misdemeanor or felony. Talk to your lawyer to get it taken care of and it will never show on your record. If he got an MIP (I don't think he did?) he can get that expunged from his record as well. eh, I'll take your word for it. I guess I don't really get the difference between a violation and a misdemeanor, he either did something illegal or he didn't, but then there was no such thing as 'minor in consumption' when I was his age - thank God. Beyond the legal verbiage, what the hell was an 18 year old scholarship athlete doing at a gddmned bar at closing time in the first place? Kinda dumb if you ask me. I mean, why even put yourself in a stiuation where something this rediculous could happen in the first place? Quote Link to comment
BIGREDIOWAN
What a dumba$$..............................he's probably screwed once Texas gets wind of this along with his probation officer. Quote Link to comment
TXHSKR
This is going to be a learning experience for him for sure. I have experience in both Nebraska and Texas in Law Enforcement process. He is on probation in Texas for a Felony, he was given a break and an opportunity to make a positive change by going to school to play Football and attend NU. He has blown it now. No one forced him into the bar, or forced him to drink. Cops do walk throughs at bars, and get grants to conduct liquor law enforcement in both Texas and Nebraska. It is not the cops fault that he caught him, he is doing his job, and prevented the possibility that he got in his car and drove away. Hell even the Coaching staff was doing walk throughs at bars earlier in the season. He made the choice, he got caught, and now he needs to deal with as an adult. Depending on the conditions of his probation, just being there is enough for it to be a violation. Quote Link to comment

It's difficult for anyone to find anything to do in Lincoln that doesn't involve alcohol, doesn't matter where you are from.......... You've got to be kidding with this stuff? Right? "this attitude on college drinking in Lincoln is just plain dumb, it goes no good, it doesn't slow down underage drinking, it actually makes the problem worse" Hmmmmmm let's see.... Most legitimate bar ownerswant compliance checks because they don't want underage kids drinking in their bars. When kids get drunk in bars and then go and get hurt driving drunk or falling out of a 2nd story window/balcony of a frat house who do their parents sue? That's right, the bar that sold them the alcohol. "Instead of taking the fake id to the bar, they now have larger more organized parties....... This not only leads to problems in neighborhoods more spread out around town, but it also leads to larger "field" parties out in the middle of nowhere........" Ahhhhhh now I see your logic! Let's let the illegal drinking be centralized so that instead of the occaisional underaged drinker in a bar, we have hoards of them 18-19 year olds getting hammered together. That way they can all use their superior maturity levels and great judgement not to do stupid stuff! Sorry "dude", but these checks are designed to discourage underaged drinking. The kids might find somewhere else to go drink at but Law Enforcement has an obligation to try to deter where and when they can. It starts in liquor establishments and branches out. "Those statistics are always flawed. Politics should not control law enforcement, crime should, that is the reason my dad left the force after 17 years is because he had no judgment left, they stripped him of judgment after 17 years. .........." It's too bad your dad left law enforcement for that reason. Because it's total BS. ALL LE officers have discretion, regardless of what you say. There may be instances where their options are limited but if he left LE because he was stripped of "his judgement" it probably means his judgement wasn't worth crap. "You want to lower underage drinking in Nebraska???????? Give kids something else to do........." Ok, so LE officers shouldn't arrest 18 year-olds they see drinking in bars, which is an effective use of their discretionary power. Instead, they should detain the kid and take him home and talk to his parents. Then, the community should get together and find something else for this kid to do so he won't go out and drink anymore. What exactly might that be? Movie theatres? Got em'. Video arcades? Got em;. Libraries? Got em'. Intramural sports, school clubs, community volunteer work, internships, rock band, guitar hero world tour, dance dance revolution, studying! It's easy to say find something else for them to do when you have no other argument to make. "Guess what was the most exciting thing to do on a friday night that didn't involve alcohol........ Cosmic Bowling.......... WOO HOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So you can imagine what there is do to in say Cozad or O'Neill....... What do you expect, underage drinking is always going to be a "problem" in Nebraska......... Wasting Law Enforcement resources is not the way to go about changing that..........." So in order to have a good time 15-21 year-olds must drink alcohol? Underage drinking is always going to be a problem EVERYWHERE. However, it's not a waste of time to enforce those laws. I'd like to see you stand in front of a room full of parents whose children are dead because of alcohol related incidents and tell them what a waste of time it is for the police to enforce those laws. I'd like to see how you would convince them that if their dead child would have gotten an MIP ticket it would never have deterred that kid from drinking. Congratulations Kstatehater, you are the winner of the most worthless and stupid post of the year award! In addition to that.... "I was in various bars 4-5 nights a week, some weeks more. I never once saw a "routine" check or even had my fake ID taken from me...... " I will be seeking a court order to force Huskerboard to provide me with your personal information so that I can seek a warrant for your arrest for your admission to using a fake id. You should receive your letter requesting that you turn yourself in approximately two weeks from now. It seems the only redeeming quality I can find in any of your posts is the fact that you hate K-State! Now STFU and stop posting ridiculous BS! GBR!!! Quote Link to comment

QFT I've been in college for 3.5 years now in a small "city" of about 15,000 and I've managed to keep myself occupied and amused without going out drinking once. The whole "there's nothing else to do" excuse is BS. If you want to have fun, there's plenty of stuff to do no matter where you are. Just because getting drunk and being an idiot is what you'd prefer doesn't mean it's the only thing to do. Quote Link to comment

Blackshirt316
Not to take away from the Williams issue as an 18 year old kid shouldn't be drinking... but is this all the Lincoln Police does? Patrol bars looking for underage drinkers? Pretty sure there's a few crimes a little more important to focus on in a city of 230,000 people. Quote Link to comment
BIGREDFAN_in_OMAHA
Also......... One more thing........... According to 1620 the zone, his BAC was .006 POINT ZERO ZERO SIX Or a swig of MOUTHWASH Yeah the isn't a prick????????? Now this is something I did not know. A .006? And Josh was smelling of alcohol and slurring his words? I think we found a winner for police officer of the year in Lincoln. Not condoning the drinking nor knocking the police officer or Williams but has any one heard Williams speak? I haven't but maybe he has a slight speech impediment and the officer misinterpreted. Just a possibility. Quote Link to comment

I'm a part of what could be considered the equivalent of a frat, but we are at a small Christian College. The college has a dry campus and we are ourselves required to abstain from alcohol, and we threw a part every year for the campus before we were moved out of our building where we bought kegs of root beer and roasted pigs. We got beer bongs and used root beer because we thought it was fun and pretty amusing. So, no, it's not alcohol. Quote Link to comment
BigRedPowerWagon
Some might call that lame but not me. College is a time for fun but more important a time to get an education. holvy83
The debate could go on forever. Yes underage drinking happens all the time and there is really no good approach to control it. I grew up in a very small town (300 people) and drinking was as normal as anything. Was it right? NO Did we get caught? YES There is a price to pay for everything we do, and for Josh's sake he did break, here it comes... a TEAM RULE! So I would be betting his future as a Husker is pretty shaky. Doesn't the coaches do checks at the bars also??? He would have been screwed either way. Quote Link to comment
